Michael was born in a very poor family. His parents worked in Vietnam before they moved to Britain in 1980. They couldn’t find jobs in Britain because they spoke little English. The whole family had to live on benefits (救济金) and they lived in a small house in Hackney, a poor area in East London. Growing up is not easy for Michael, but he never gave up. At the age of ten, he made up his mind to go to Cambridge University. It was not easy, either. Michael studied at a school, which used to be called “the worst school in Britain”. However, young Michael made his mind to try his best, no matter what kind of school he was studying at. The smart boy studied very hard and did well in every subject at school. Once he made a bet with his friend to learn further maths. As a result, after just spending four months teaching himself from a textbook, he got an A in AS-level further maths. Now Michael is the star medical student in St John’s College, Cambridge and has just won an award for his excellent grades. He hopes he will be an example for other young people from poor families. 5. What do we know about Michael’s family according to the passage? A. His family was very poor and lived on benefits. B. They made a living with the help of the government in Vietnam. C. Michael’s parents had no jobs because of their little experience. D. They lived in a poor area without any help. 6. Which of the following is TRUE about Michael? A. He won an award in his middle school because of hard work. B. He was good at making bets with other students. C. Though very young, he decided to go to Cambridge University. D. His best subjects in school were maths and history. 7. What does Michael learn about in Cambridge University? A. English. B. History. C. Geography. D. Medicine. 8. What is the best title for the passage? A. How to deal with the poverty B. How to become a good student C. From a poor area to Britain D. From “the worst school” to Cambridge University 【答案】5. A 6. C 7. D 8. 根据第二段中“They couldn’t find jobs in Britain because they spoke little English. The whole family had to live on benefits (救济金) and they lived in a small house in Hackney, a poor area in East London.(他们在英国找不到工作,因为他们几乎不会说英语。整个家庭靠救济金生活,他们住在东伦敦贫困地区哈克尼的一所小房子里。)”可知,Michael一家很穷,靠救济金生活。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段第一句“At the age of ten, he made up his mind to go to Cambridge University.(十岁时,他决心要上剑桥大学。)” 根据最后一段中的“Now Michael is the star medical student in St John’s College, Cambridge and has just won an award for his excellent grades.(现在,Michael是剑桥大学约翰学院的明星医学生,刚刚获得优秀成绩奖。)” 根据第三段中“At the age of ten, he made up his mind to go to Cambridge University. It was not easy, either. Michael studied at a school, which used to be called “the worst school in Britain”.(十岁时,他决心要上剑桥大学,这也不容易。Michael就读于一所曾被称为“英国最差的学校”的学校。)”可知,他十岁立志上剑桥大学,再根据最后一段“Now Michael is the star medical student in St John’s College, Cambridge and has just won an award for his excellent grades.(现在,Michael是剑桥大学约翰学院的明星医学生,刚刚获得优秀成绩奖。)” 故D项“From “the worst school” to Cambridge University(从“最差学校”到剑桥大学)”符合文章标题,能概括全文内容。 C To figure out if we can die of boredom, we first have to understand what boredom is. For help, I called James Danckert, a psychologist who studies boredom at the University of Waterloo in Canada. “A lot of people think about being bored as being lazy. And it’s absolutely not that,” he says. “Bored people want to be engaged with their world, eager to do something satisfying and exciting. But any attempt to do so is failing.” In one of his experiments, Danckert made people extremely bored by showing them a video of two people hanging clothes to dry. He found that when people got bored, their hearts beat faster and their levels of a hormone called cortisol (皮质醇) went up, compared to when they watched another video that made them sad. These physical changes were signs that boredom was stressing them out. Let’s come back to if boredom can kill you. Back in the 1980s, scientists asked people who worked for the British government a whole bunch of questions, including how bored they felt in their daily lives. It turned out that people who said they were more bored were also more likely to have died of heart disease. “We know that prolonged exposure to stress is bad for your health,” Danckert says. A single boring day can’t kill you. But if you’re always bored, the stress could add up into something dangerous. “Oh no,” you might be thinking. “School is boring, my friends are boring, everything is boring! What’s going to happen to me?” Don’t worry. Danckert says “As you get older, you get less bored,” mainly because you gain more independence and have to get busy to achieve your long-term goals. And trust me: that’s anything but boring. 9. According to James Danckert, why do people feel bored? A. They are too lazy to do anything. B. They can’t gain excitement in life. C. They are too frightened to have a try. D. They can’t fully understand boredom. 10. What can we learn from Paragraph 2? A. Doing housework will make people bored. B. People’s heart rate increases with boredom. C. Physical changes can lead to extreme boredom. D. Watching something sad is a boring experience. 11. What does the underlined word “prolonged” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Continued. B. Repeated. C. Sudden. D. Active. 12. What does Danckert recommend to save people from boredom? A. Depending on friends. B. Setting long-term goals. C. Keeping yourself occupied. D. Trusting people around you. B 10. B 11. A 12. 根据第一段中的““A lot of people think about being bored as being lazy. And it’s absolutely not that,” he says. “Bored people want to be engaged with their world, eager to do something satisfying and exciting. But any attempt to do so is failing.”(他说:“很多人把感到无聊等同于懒惰,但事实绝非如此。感到无聊的人渴望融入周遭生活,想去做令人充实、振奋的事,可一次次尝试全都落空。”)”可知,人们感到无聊是因为无法在生活中获得愉悦和兴奋感。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“He found that when people got bored, their hearts beat faster and their levels of a hormone called cortisol (皮质醇) went up, compared to when they watched another video that made them sad.(他发现,与观看令人悲伤的视频相比,人们感到无聊时,心跳会加快,皮质醇水平也会升高)”可知,人在无聊时心率会加快。 根据第三段中的“A single boring day can’t kill you. But if you’re always bored, the stress could add up into something dangerous.(无聊的一天不会致命,但长期处于无聊状态,压力不断累积会产生危险)”可知,长期持续的压力有害健康,因此prolonged意为“持续的”,与Continued同义。 根据第四段中的“Danckert says “As you get older, you get less bored,” mainly because you gain more independence and have to get busy to achieve your long-term goals.(丹克特说:“随着年龄增长,人会更少感到无聊”,主要因为人更加独立,且必须忙碌起来去实现长期目标)”可知,Danckert建议人们要忙起来去摆脱无聊。 How to Use DeepSeek Effectively DeepSeek is of great benefit to senior high school students because it is capable of offering 24/7 academic support. From “the worst school” to Cambridge University C To figure out if we can die of boredom, we first have to understand what boredom is. How to Use DeepSeek Effectively DeepSeek is of great benefit to senior high school students because it is capable of offering 24/7 academic support.
