When he was about 20 years old, he went to Texas. There he had a job in a bank. But he got himself into some trouble. Some money went missing from the bank. O. Henry was believed to have stolen it, so he was sent to prison. During the three years in prison, he learnt to write short stories. After he got out of prison, he went to New York and went on writing.
He wrote mostly about New York and the life of the poor there. People liked his stories, because almost all of them finished with a sudden change. This made the readers surprised.
16.A new fitness center _____ for two months in Wanda Plaza, but I _____ there so far.
A.has opened; haven’t gone B.has been open; haven’t been
C.has been opened; haven’t been D.has been open; haven’t been to
【答案】B
【知识点】延续性动词与非延续性动词、have been to(或in)/have gone to区别
第二空中,has been to去过已回来,因为there是副词,to要省去。 故选B。
17.I ________ think there ________ more pollution.
A./; won’t be B.don’t; will be C./; won’t have D.don’t; have
There be
分析句子结构可知,此句为含宾语从句的复合句;主句是I think,从句表示否定时,否定要转移到主句上,所以第一空应用don’t;there be句型的将来时为there will be或there is going to be,所以第二空应用will be。故选B。
18.Look at these signs! They’re to remind the visitors ________ loudly in the museum.
A.to speak B.not to speak
C.speaking D.not speaking
【答案】B
【知识点】动词不定式作宾语补足语、speak(spoke spoken)
根据“remind the visitors … loudly…”可知,此处考查remind sb. not to do sth.“提醒某人不要做某事”,应用动词不定式作宾语补足语。故选B。
19.The shopping mall Mixc in the northern part of Nanjing ________ since last December.
A.opened B.has opened C.has been on D.has been open
20.—_____ Tom with his sister _______ the Leaning Tower of Pisa?
—Yes, only once.
A.Has; been to B.Have; been in C.Has; gone to D.Have; been to
【答案】A
【知识点】with/along with/together with、have been to(或in)/have gone to区别
have been to表示去了某地已经回来;have gone to表示去了某地还没回来;have been in表示在某地一直待着。根据“Yes, only once.” 故选A。
21.Since schools offered after-school service (服务), the students ________ three more lessons after school from Monday to Friday.
A.used to have B.used to having
C.have been used to have D.have been used to having
【答案】D
【知识点】表示影响(动作已完成)、used to do sth.、动词短语、含since/for的现在完成时
be used to doing sth.习惯做某事;used to do sth. 根据“Since schools offered after-school service (服务),”可知,此句应用现在完成时,排除A和B。根据“the students…three more lessons after school from Monday to Friday.”
22.If everyone is ready for the work, it __________ easily.
A.will be finished B.is finished C.are finished D.will finish
【答案】A
根据“If everyone is ready for the work, it ... easily.” 故选A。
23.Her beautiful dress made her ________.
A.take it easy B.jump out of her skin
C.stand out from the crowd D.hit the road
【答案】C
【知识点】take it easy、动词短语
take it easy放轻松;jump out of her skin魂不附体;stand out from the crowd脱颖而出;hit the road出发。根据“Her beautiful dress made her...”
24.—Tom, can you tell me ________?
—Try Sisyphe in Wan Xianghui Shopping Mall.
A.why to buy a dictionary B.where to get a dictionary
C.how to choose a dictionary D.when to publish a dictionary
why to buy a dictionary为什么买字典;where to get a dictionary哪里得到字典;how to choose a dictionary如何选字典;when to publish a dictionary何时出版一本词典。根据“Try Sisyphe in Wan Xianghui Shopping Mall”可知,询问哪里能买到,用where+不定式的结构作宾语,故选B。
25.—________ have you stayed in this hotel?
—Not long, just ________ this Wednesday.
A.How soon; since B.How long; since
C.How soon; from D.How long; from
【答案】B
【知识点】特殊疑问句、时间介词、how soon、how long、from
how soon用来询问多久之后,常用于将来时;how long用来询问多长时间;since自从;from从。

The job of protecting kids most often falls to parents. If they know about risks in and around their homes and communities, they can take steps to protect their children against the risks.
Many parents realize the importance of safety around pools and at the beach. But they don’t pay much attention to bathtubs (浴缸). When children are taking a bath, parents must stay by them. Most drowning cases happen when a child falls into a pool or is left alone when he or she is taking a bath. The younger the child is, the greater the risk is.
Millions of kids are living in high levels of lead (铅) every day. Children under the age of 6 are especially easy to be harmed because their growing bodies get in more lead than grown-ups. Never put food in newspapers or printed paper. Reduce the food like popcorn and potato chips. Before eating fruit and vegetables, wash them with clean water.
Young children have the habit of putting things in their mouths. As a result, kids can’t breathe, or their throats can be hurt. Every parent should realize the dangers of this. Put small things away from kids. Check the things whose small parts can be taken off. Cut children’s food into very small pieces so that they can’t stay in children’s throats.
39.What should parents do to protect their children?
A.Keep their children at home all the time. B.Work at a company that is close to their home.
C.Work at the community that they live in. D.Pay attention to the risks near where they live.
40.Which one is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Don’t let a kid take a bath at any time.
B.Never let a kid eat popcorn or potato chips.
C.Don’t let a young kid hold small things in the hand.
D.Never eat the food packed in paper bags.
41.What’s the best title of this passage?

C.Advice for children to keep themselves away from the risks.
D.Advice for parents to keep children away from the risks.

The Mariana Trench is the deepest known place on Earth, hidden deep in the western Pacific Ocean, about 200 kilometers east of the Mariana Islands. This amazing underwater trench is shaped like a half-moon, reaching about 2,550 kilometers long and only 69 kilometers wide on average. Its deepest point, called Challenger Deep, reaches nearly 11,000 meters below the sea surface—deeper than the height of Mount Everest.
This amazing trench formed millions of years ago because of the movement of Earth’s tectonic plates The heavy Pacific Plate slides slowly under the smaller Mariana Plate, creating this deep crack on the ocean floor. It is one of the most extreme environments on our planet. The water here is completely dark, with near-freezing temperatures and huge water pressure, which is more than 1,000 times stronger than that at the sea surface.
Surprisingly, life still lives in this harsh place. Scientists have found special deep-sea creatures, such as sea cucumbers, small worms and shrimp, living in the trench. These animals have strong bodies to live under high pressure and in cold, dark water.
However, human activities have even reached this faraway place. Researchers have found plastic waste at the bottom of the trench, reminding us that we need to protect our oceans. The Mariana Trench holds many mysteries of nature, and it reminds us how amazing and fragile (脆弱的) our planet is.
42.What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A.The formation of the trench. B.The depth of the trench.
C.The life in the trench. D.The pollution of the trench.
43.The following are all about the environment of the Mariana Trench EXCEPT ________.
A.high pressure B.no light C.freezing temperatures D.no living things
44.What does the underlined word “harsh” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

45.What will the writer probably talk about next?
A.How to protect our oceans. B.How to explore the deep sea further.
C.The history of the Mariana Trench. D.Ways to save deep sea animals.

One of my patients, a successful businessman, tells me that before he fell ill he wasn't happy. Happiness was "having the cookie". Only if you had the cookie could things be good.
Unluckily, the cookie kept changing. Some of the time it was money, sometimes power, sometimes fancy things.
A year and a half after his diagnosis(诊断) of cancer, he sits in my office shaking his head. "It's like I stopped learning how to live after I was a kid. When I give my son a cookie, he is happy. If I take the cookie away or it breaks, he is unhappy. But he is 2 years old and I am 43.
A.Children should learn to protect themselves against risks.
B.Parents are children’s first teachers on their growth.

A.Quiet. B.Hard. C.Lively. D.Peaceful.

It has taken me this long to understand that the cookie will never make me happy for long," he says, "The minute you have the cookie, you start to worry about someone trying to take it away from you."
My patient laughs and says cancer has changed him. For the first time he is happy. No matter if his business is doing well or not, no matter if he wins or loses at golf. "Two years ago, cancer asked me, 'What is really important?' Well, life is important—life with the cookie, life without the cookie. Happiness doesn't have anything to do with the cookie; it has something to do with being alive," he pauses thoughtfully, "I guess life is the cookie."
71.What was "the cookie" for the businessman before he fell ill?
72.How does the patient's 2-year-old son feel when he gets a cookie?
73.What makes the patient change his mind to be happy?
74.What question did the patient start to think about after he got cancer?
75.What does the patient think happiness is at present?
Paying for bus ride with plastic usually makes people think of plastic bus card. B 76 one Indonesian city has decided to accept plastic recyclable waste instead of money for city buses.
Surabaya, Indonesia’s second largest city, l 77 on the eastern end of the country’s main island Java, made this decision in April 2018. Now l 78 can pay for their bus rides by putting plastic cups or bottles directly on the bus. A two-hour bus ride costs 10 plastic cups or 5 bottles.
Indonesia is the second largest ocean plastic polluter, producing u 79 to 2.4 million tons of plastic waste into the ocean every year, according to a report. The head of Surabaya’s transportation department said. “With this decision, we hope to raise public awareness about the environment, e 80 people’s awareness about plastic waste.”
The collected bottles are s 81 to recycling companies and the money earned from it goes toward running the bus companies and p 82 money for green spaces in the city. This is certainly turning rubbish into a national t 83 .
The decision is part of the city’s p 84 —to become plastic waste-free within a few years. In order to encourage local people to take buses, the city also added new Surabaya buses. They are air conditioned, comfortable and easy for elderly and d 85 passengers to get on and off.
This type of programme can be a model for other cities worldwide and encourage citizens to recycle their plastic waste.

A.Children should learn to protect themselves against risks.
B.Parents are children’s first teachers on their growth.

A.Quiet. B.Hard. C.Lively. D.Peaceful.
