A
Mom always said,“Choose your friends wisely.”Now a study led by a Rutgers Health professor shows she was onto something:Their personality traits can affect you—especially ones that are in their genes.
The genetic makeup of adolescent peers may have longterm consequences for individual risk of drug and alcohol use disorders, depression and anxiety, the groundbreaking study has found.“What our data illustrates is the long reach of social genetic effects,”said Jessica E.Salvatore, an associate professor of psychiatry at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and lead author of the study published in American Journal of Psychiatry.
Sociogenomics—the influence of one person's genotype on the observable traits of another—is an emerging field of genomics.Previous research suggested that peers' genetic makeup might influence health outcomes of their friends. To test this, Salvatore and her colleagues used Swedish national data to assess peer social genetic effects on several mental disorders.
With an anonymized(匿名的) database of more than 1.5 million individuals born in Sweden between 1980 and 1998 to Swedishborn parents, the first step was to map individuals by location and by school during their teenage years. The researchers then used medical, pharmacy and legal registries to document substance use and mental health disorders for the same individuals in adulthood.
Having controlled factors such as the target individuals' own genetic tendencies and family socioeconomic factors, the researchers still found a clear association between peers' genetic tendencies and target individuals' likelihood of developing a substance use or mental disorder. The impacts were stronger among schoolbased peers than geographically defined peers.
Salvatore said more research is needed to understand why these connections exist. But what is clear, she said, is that the findings highlight the need for interventions.“If we want to think about how to best address these socially costly disorders, we need to think more about networkbased and social interventions,”she said.
This research also underlines the importance of disrupting processes and risks that extend for at least a decade after attendance in school, Salvatore added.“Peer genetic influences have a very long reach,”she said.

A.You should listen to your parent's advice.
B.Peers are to blame for your mental diseases.
C.Peers' makeup is the most influential factor.
D.Peers' personality will affect you in the long run.
根据第二段第一句“The genetic makeup of adolescent peers may have longterm consequences...” 再根据第二段第二句中的“What our data illustrates is the long reach of social genetic effects”可知,数据说明了社会遗传效应的长期影响。
√
2.Why did Salvatore and her colleagues conduct the research?
A.They were concerned with health outcomes of adolescents.
B.They accessed an anonymized database of peers' influence.
C.They worried about severe cases of peers' mental disorders.
D.They intended to check former research on sociogenomics.

√
3.What can we learn from paragraph 5?
A.Target individuals were easily affected in the school.
B.Family socioeconomic factors were made for the findings.
C.The genetic makeup had nothing to do with mental disorders.
D.Target individuals were unlikely to suffer substance use disorders.
根据第五段中的“The impacts were stronger among schoolbased peers than geographically defined peers.” 故选A。
√
4.What is Salvatore's suggestion on interventions?
A.Letting go of social genetic effects after 10 years.
B.Digging into why schoolbased connections exist.
C.Persisting in the removal of the negative influence.
D.Highlighting the risks that would extend for a long time.
根据第六段中的“the findings highlight the need for interventions...to best address these socially costly disorders, we need to think more about networkbased and social interventions”可知,研究发现干预很重要,要解决这些社会代价高昂的疾病问题,需要社会的干预。

Mapping explorers of Wikipedia(维基百科) rabbit holes has revealed three different styles of human curiosity:the “Busybody”,the“Hunter”,and the “Dancer”.
Wikipedia, as the world's largest online encyclopedia, is now helping social scientists, in their study, deepen the definition of curiosity by tracing how searchers move among topics and lose themselves in these Wikipedia rabbit holes.
In Wikipedia, a Busybody traces a winding route through many often distantly related topics.A Hunter, in contrast, searches with sustained focus, moving among a relatively small number of closely related articles.A Dancer links together highly distinct topics to try to combine them to form new ideas.“Curiosity actually works by connecting pieces of information...to stuff that we already know,”says University of Pennsylvania network scientist Dani Bassett.
The team tracked more than 482,000 people using Wikipedia's mobile app in 50 countries or territories and 14 languages, and charted these users' paths using“knowledge networks”of connected information, which present how closely one search topic is related to another.Beyond just mapping the connections, they linked curiosity styles to indicators of wellbeing, inequality, and other measures.
In countries with higher education levels and greater gender equality, people browsed(浏览) more like Busybodies. In countries with lower scores on these variables, people browsed like Hunters.Bassett assumes that in countries with less equality, there may be a restriction on knowledge production that pushes people more toward this intense focus.Dancer patterns, more recently confirmed, were excluded.
Princeton University psychologist Erik Nook praised the study for its “astonishingly broad” range. The team, he says, brought together specialized knowledge from a range of fields to reveal a host of insights into human behavior.
The seeds of this work were actually planted in 2016 when Bassett and Perry Zurn, a professor of philosophy, noticed that creativity was wellstudied, but curiosity, its necessary condition, was not. After extensively studying 2,000 years of Western literature, Zurn identified various curiosity styles, including the three mentioned.Wikipedia then served as a realworld test bed to confirm this classification.
5.What is the purpose of the study by social scientists?
A.To better understand curiosity.
B.To find different curiosity styles.
C.To promote Wikipedia's mobile app.
D.To analyse the education differences.
根据第二段“Wikipedia...lose themselves in these Wikipedia rabbit holes.” 故选A。
√
6.How might a “Hunter” search on Wikipedia?
A.From “cats” to “coffee” to “cat cafes”.
B.From “cats” to “cat diet” to “cat sleep”.
C.From “cats” to “chemicals” to “the universe”.
D.From “cats” to “Egyptian cats” to “ancient Egypt”.
根据第三段中的“A Hunter, in contrast, searches with sustained focus, moving among a relatively small number of closely related articles.”
√
7.What kind of people act more like Busybodies?
A.People with better education.
B.People with greater happiness.
C.People from less equal society.
D.People from less developed nations.
根据第五段中的“In countries with higher education levels and greater gender equality, people browsed(浏览) more like Busybodies.” 故选A。
√
8.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.A new research method.
B.The origin of the research.
C.Previous research findings.
D.Limitations of prior research.
