Blowing Up Balloons with CO2
Chemical changes are helpful in doing some great experiments. Put baking soda (小苏打) and lemon juice together to produce gas (CO2). Then put the gas through a soft drink bottle into your balloon to make use of it!
What You’ll Need:
●A balloon
●40ml water
●A soft drink bottle
●A drinking straw (吸管)
●Lemon juice
●1 teaspoon of baking soda
Instructions:
Step 1 Before you begin, make sure that your balloon can inflate (膨胀) as easily as possible.
Step 2 Pour the 40ml water into the soft drink bottle.
Step 3 Add one teaspoon of baking soda and mix it around with the straw until it can’t be seen.
Step 4 Pour the lemon juice in, and quickly put the balloon over the mouth of the bottle.
Why?
If all goes well, then your balloon should inflate! Adding the lemon juice to the baking soda creates a chemical reaction (反应).
When the two mix, they create CO2. The gas rises up and goes through the soft drink bottle, and it pushes the balloon outwards and blows it up.
( ) 21. The reaction between baking soda and lemon juice makes ________.
A. O2 B. H2O C. CO2
( ) 22. What should you do after adding the baking soda?
A. Mix it around with the straw.

Once upon a time, a princess lived happily in a nice palace with her prince who used to be a frog. But lately, she noticed he was quiet. He always looked out at the pond (池塘) for hours because he really wanted to be back there.
“What’s wrong, my dear?” the princess asked one morning. “It seems silly,” the prince replied, “but I miss all my friends who live in the pond. We had great fun together! If I could become a frog again, I would show you how wonderful life can be underwater!”
The princess thought living in a dirty pond sounded awful, but she wanted to cheer him up. So she secretly asked a fairy for help. The next day, they met by the pond. With a smile and a wave of the magic stick, the fairy’s magic worked.
The couple began to get smaller! The princess looked at her hand — it was turning green. When she looked into the water, she saw a froggy face looking back at her. The prince jumped in. Taking a deep breath, the princess followed.
The cool water felt good! Opening her big eyes, she saw something beautiful, such as moving water plants and shining fish eggs. With a move of her feet, she went quickly through the water. This was fun! The prince was there with her. “See? I told you it was nice!” he said, his voice full of joy.
“Welcome to our home!” Many goldfish greeted them. “Hellooo frooog prince!” said a fresh water fish in his slow voice. The princess was very happy. This was a whole new world to learn about! Perhaps she and the prince could spend their summer holidays in the pond every year!

Recently, experts are studying how language could influence children’s lives. They did a survey of 2,001 parents with children under 18, and another survey of over 500 business leaders.
The study shows that children who can speak different languages are more aware (意识到) of different cultures and other people’s ideas. This helps them better understand the world and makes it easier for them to find good jobs when they grow up.
In the future, there will be new kinds of jobs, such as space tour guides, robot coaches and e-commerce (电商) workers. No matter what job a child chooses, people who can speak several languages and understand different cultures will have more advantages.
So, which languages are the most useful? The results show that children should learn French, German or Chinese if they want to be successful in the next ten years. Speaking one of these languages can help businesses enter new markets and build relationships with future partners.
However, the survey also found something surprising — not all parents realize the importance of learning a second language. About 85% of parents think it is important, but over 45% admit (承认) that their children cannot speak a second language. Even 15% of parents think learning a second language is a waste of time.
If you want your child to stand out from the crowd, here is some advice from parents of successful people: give children housework to do, set high but realistic (现实的) goals, keep learning yourself, and spend time together. And of course, make sure they learn a second language — especially French, German or Chinese!
( ) 28. The study is mainly based on ________.
A. a survey of 2,001 children under 18
B. a survey of 2,001 parents and over 500 business leaders
C. a survey of more than 500 business leaders only
( ) 29. According to the study, speaking different languages can help children ________.
A. become more aware of different cultures and points of view
B. get better grades in all their school subjects
C. travel to more countries for free
( ) 30. What did the survey find about parents?
A. 85% of parents think learning a second language is a waste of time
B. Over 45% of parents say their child cannot speak a second language
C. 15% of parents believe it is important to learn a second language
( ) 31. The purpose of the passage is to ________
A. introduce ways of learning foreign languages
B. describe the advantages of learning different languages
C. advise parents to make their kids learn a second language

①The Uyuni Salt Flat (乌尤尼盐沼), located in southwestern Bolivia (玻利维亚), is known as the “Mirror of the Sky”. After the rain, this place looks like a mirror. It reflects the sky so perfectly that you can’t tell where the ground ends and where the sky begins. The amazing mirror effect doesn’t come out of thin air. It is made possible by three key factors (要素).
②The first and most important factor is the flat (平坦的) ground. The ground of the Uyuni Salt Flat is one of the flattest on Earth. The salt flat was formed when ancient lakes dried up over time. When the water of these lakes evaporated (蒸发), a thick and flat layer (层) of salt was left behind. This made the ground almost perfectly flat. Therefore, when it rains, the water doesn’t collect in water holes. Instead, it forms a smooth layer of water on the top of the salt. This is what creates the huge natural mirror.
③The rainfall (降雨量) also plays an important role. It can’t be a storm. Just enough rain to cover the layer of salt is perfect. If the rain is heavy, water holes will form and the mirror effect will be lost.
④Besides, calm weather is necessary for the clear mirror effect. Even a small wind can make waves on the water. These waves will break up the clear reflection and take away the magical experience.
⑤The mirror effect mainly appears during the rainy season, which runs from December to March. If you want to see the beautiful view, you need to know that the effect doesn’t last long. When the water evaporates under the sun, the “mirror” disappears and the ground turns back into hard, white salt.
( ) 32. What does the underlined part “come out of thin air” in Para 1 mean?
A. Happen in a clear sky. B. Happen for no reason. C. Be seen in good weather.
( ) 33. What do we know about the Uyuni Salt Flat from Para 2?
A. Water holes are often found there.
B. It is flat because wind smoothed its surface.
C. The flat ground makes rainwater a smooth layer.
( ) 34. What does Para 3 mainly talk about?
A. The influence of storms on the Uyuni Salt Flat.
B. The role of rainfall in creating the mirror effect.
C. The importance of wind in forming the “mirror”.
( ) 35. Which best shows the right structure of the passage?
A. B. C.
