Recently, video clips of Zhang Jianns, a sanitation (环卫) worker, directing foreigners have gone viral online. Her fluent English and confident feature showcased in the videos have deeply impressed the viewers, sparking curiosity about how an ordinary-looking sanitation worker had such impressive English skills.
Behind the hit lies a decade-long journey of persistence. In 2012, Zhang Jianna took on the role of a sanitation worker in the embassy (大使馆) area of Sanlitun in Beijing’s Chaoyang district. A special encounter while working has motivated Zhang to learn English by herself, which she continues with determination to this day. “My goal is quite simple. I just want to help whenever Someone is in need, whether asking for directions, visa procedures, or telling them about the embassy area I am responsible for,” said Zhang.
Thus, at the age of 40, Zhang began a personal challenge. Without a teacher, she began learning English from her children’s textbooks, starting with basic words and phrases commonly used for giving directions. With no fixed study hours, she used every spare moment. While others rested, she memorized vocabulary and practiced speaking. Upon arriving home after work, she would write down new knowledge points and review them until she thoroughly understood them. Over the years, she has filled over a dozen notebooks. Her memory posed her biggest challenge. “Learning English at an older age, I would easily forget the words I learned before. Persistence is the key to learning English. Learn step by step, learn every day,” Zhang said.
When asked about the greatest reward of learning English, Zhang said, “Growing up in a rural area without a college education, I sometimes feared being looked down upon. But every time I help a stranger in English, I feel incredibly accomplished.” “Tiring, but satisfying,” Zhang Jianna reflects on her work and language learning. “To serve others makes me happy, and it’s where I prove my self-worth,” said Zhang. “After retirement, I also want to introduce my hometown in English and improve local tourism,” she said, acknowledging that her inspiring journey has led to this new goal.
4. What aroused curiosity about Zhang Jianna?
A. Her confident expression. B. Her role as a sanitation worker.

6. What does Zhang Jianna think of the greatest reward of learning English?
A. Better job opportunities. B. Respect from family members.
C. Social recognition. D. Self-confidence.
7. What is Zhang Jianna’s future goal related to English learning?

As the Spring Festival approaches, discussions on “festive atmosphere fading away (逐渐消失)” have once again risen to the surface; yet a closer look reveals that young people are not throwing away traditions, but celebrating the festival in new and innovative ways.
On the lifestyle platform Xiaohongshu, users share couplets (对联) they have written. Instead of poetic wishes, the paired phrases could be numbers, emojis and plain slogans—with “Having money and knowledge; Losing weight and troubles” an often-seen refrain. These funny couplets have encouraged many people to continue the Spring Festival tradition of hanging couplets and sticking gate-god pictures. Calligraphy, woodcut pictures and traditional paintings also gain in popularity among people born from 1995 to 2010.
Another rebounding (复苏的) tradition is wearing hanfu, a traditional garment of the Han people, often worn during festivals. For people born after 1990s, one of the childhood Spring Festival customs was buying new clothes. Some still embrace this tradition as a way to ring in the newyear. Dang Hui from Luoyang, took her family for a hanfu family photoshoot. Instead of sitting indoors, they went to ancient-style parks and temple fairs.
Some young people also get to know better and become interested in Spring Festival “traditions”, such as visiting temple fairs, flower markets and watching lion dancing. Meng Fanis spending the holidays with her family in Guangzhou and they plan to watch lion dancing, which combines martial arts, folk music and dance. The movements, mimicking lions climbing mountains, jumping across rivers and playing with each other, carry auspicious meanings such as overcoming difficulties and making achievements.

A. The decline of festive atmosphere. B. The meaning carried by Spring Festival.
C. The importance of passing on traditions. D. The renewal of Spring Festival traditions.

For centuries, the Yangtze River has been home to many fish species. But too much fishing had pushed some native fish to the edge of disappearing. To save the river, China started a ten-year fishing ban (禁令) on the Yangtze in 2021. Now, new data shows the ban is working effectively.
Law enforcement along the river has been strengthened. In 2025, criminal cases related to illegal fishing dropped by nearly 40 percent from the year before. Other illegal fishing cases fell by 65 percent from 2021 levels, showing that tougher measures are working. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the river's ecosystem health improved between 2021 and 2025, compared with the period before the ban. This positive change means the long-term decline of fish resources has been successfully stopped.
The latest monitoring shows that from 2021 to 2025, a total of 351 native fish species were found in the Yangtze area. That is an increase of 43 species from the years just before the ban. In 2025 alone, the number of fish in the main stream was about twice as high as before the ban, which is a remarkable achievement.
The recovery is also good for local people. To support the ban, more than 230,000 fishermen have stopped fishing. The government has helped 141,000 of them find new jobs and provided pension(养老金) insurance for about 220,000. Those facing financial problems have also received temporary help to get through the transition.
Looking ahead, the government has a new action plan with 60 measures to further protect the river. These include restoring wetlands, protecting endangered species like the Yangtze finless porpoise and the Chinese sturgeon, and improving breeding technologies. Recently, about 550,000 young Chinese sturgeons were released into the Yangtze to help rebuild their population.
The fishing ban has given the Yangtze a much-needed break. With continued protection and public support, the river's future looks brighter than it has in decades.
12. What happened to the Yangtze River after the fishing ban was introduced?
A. The number of native fish species continued to drop.
B. The ecosystem health showed clear signs of recovery.
C. The government reduced law enforcement along the river.
D. Most fishermen refused to cooperate with the government.
13. How does the author show the effectiveness of the fishing ban in Paragraphs 2 and 3?
A. By listing figures. B. By giving examples.
C. By giving definitions. D. By explaining causes.
14. What can be learned about the government's new action plan for the Yangtze River?
A. It has successfully released all endangered species back into the wild.
B. It cares more about helping former fishermen than protecting fish species.
C. It focuses mainly on improving breeding technologies for endangered fish.
D. It combines habitat restoration with species protection and breeding efforts.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. China Started a Ban on the Yangtze River
B. How Overfishing Damaged the Yangtze River
C. Fishing Ban Brings Life Back to the Yangtze River
D. How Economy Benefits from the Yangtze River

Jim sat on the sofa. Mother’s Day was coming up, and he didn’t have a present. “How can I buy a present without any money?” he thought.
Jim picked up the newspaper that was lying on the sofa. He noticed a large advertisement on the front page. The local department store was sponsoring (赞助) a contest. “Tell us why your mom is special and win a shopping spree (疯狂购物) for her,” said the ad.
“This is perfect!” thought Jim. He ran to his room with the newspaper. Taking a pencil and a piece of paper from his desk, he started to write.
“My mom is the best mother in the world. She always makes a delicious lunch for me to take to school, and she never forgets my dessert. She reads as many books to me before bed as I want. She always remembers to check under the bed for monsters. And she gives the best hug, but never in front of my friends, who would laugh at me for hugging my mom.”
Jim liked what he had written. He copied it neatly and got an envelope and a stamp from his dad. He ran to the mailbox with his entry (参赛作品), “Mom will love having a shopping spree,” he thought.
Jim checked the mailbox every day for his prize. Days passed by, and then weeks. Soon it was the day before Mother’s day. Jim still hadn’t heard anything about the contest.
“What am I going to do now?” he wondered. He didn’t win a shopping spree for mum, and he still didn’t have any money. He had to think of something. Jim closed his eyes and scratched his hair and thought so hard that his head began to hurt.
Suddenly a perfect idea occurred to him.

The next morning, Jim handed his letter to his mom.

Dear Tom,
With the World Reading Day coming, I am writing to share some related information with you. In a gesture to trigger students’ passion for reading and enrich our school life, our school held a series of wonderful reading-related activities last week.
To begin with, we had a book fair on the playground where different classes set up their booths, displaying a wide range of books. We could wander around, flip through the pages, and even exchange books with each other. What’s more, several well-known local authors were invited to give lectures, who talked about their writing experiences and the significance of reading in their lives.
Personally, I’ve reaped great benefits from these activities. Not only have I discovered some new books that I’m really eager to dive into but also I have realized that reading is a journey of self-improvement.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Sitting down straight on his chair, he began to write the letter in his best handwriting as a Mother’s Day present. “Dear Mom, I’m writing this to tell you that you are the best mother in the world...” With a sincere heart, Jim finished the letter and sealed it in an envelope, his lips curving into a smile.
The next morning, Jim handed his letter to his mom. Finishing reading the letter, his mom gathered him into her arms, her eyes wet due to happiness. “Thank you, my dear!” She cried out with great satisfaction, hugging Jim more tightly. Leaning against his mom’s shoulder, Jim slowly explained why he chose to write a letter as a gift. After hearing the reason, his mom gently ran her fingers through his hair, saying, “To me, your letter is better than a thousand shopping sprees.” Indeed, love should be made known to loved ones.
