China’s rich intangible cultural heritage (ICH) is vividly preserved in specialized museums that showcase age-old crafts and traditions. Here are three renowned institutions offering profound cultural insights.
China National Arts and Crafts Museum (Beijing)
Established in 2022, the museum stands on Beijing’s Central Axis, also called China Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum. Its architectural design mixes Forbidden City aesthetics with modern elements, symbolizing cultural continuity. The collection spans 11 craft categories, including jade carvings and textiles. highlighting its treasures are four imperial jade masterpieces carved from a single raw stone, such as Magnificent Scenery of Mount Tai, representing China’s craft height. Free to visit (with reservation), it’s a premier venue for understanding national-level ICH.
China Yunjin Museum (Nanjing)
It is dedicated to Yunjin, the “cloud brocade” once exclusive to emperors. Its star exhibit is the Plain Silk Gown — a Han Dynasty relic thinner than cicada wings, embodying ancient weaving mastery. The museum preserves traditional Jacques looms and demonstrates the complex production process, where a single piece may take years to complete. Visitors witness how this luxurious textile, named for its cloud-like beauty, has evolved while preserving cultural essence.
Puzhen Bai Ethnic Tie-Dye Museum (Yunnan)
It showcases tie-dye, a UNESCO-listed craft. Located in Dali, it displays both traditional and contemporary works, from indigo-dyed fabrics to innovative designs. What sets it apart is interactive experiences: visitors can try tying and dyeing fabrics themselves, engaging directly with the “zhahua” technique. The museum preserves the Bai people’s ecological dyeing methods, using natural paints and plant materials, reflecting harmony between humans and nature.
These museums not only exhibit artifacts but also breathe life into endangered skills, inviting global audiences to appreciate China’s cultural legacy.

Earth is filled with an amazing variety of creatures and an artist has put its diversity on display like never before. Anton Thomas of New Zealand has created a hand-drawn map of the entire planet that features animals in their natural habitats.
His journey began in childhood, drawing imaginary worlds on his bedroom walls in Nelson. Thomas, as a child, longed for a world where nature ruled dominant. His map represents the “ideal planet that I wanted,” Thomas said. “I would see all the houses, and imagine what it was like before any humans showed up.” After years working as a chef and musician, a chance request to decorate an old fridge in Montreal relighted his passion for cartography (制图学), launching an extraordinary career.
Thomas’s first major project, a massive map of North America, consumed five years of his life. Working evenings after teaching jobs, he frequently redrew sections as his skills improved. “These represent real homes, not abstract (抽象的) art,” he stresses, explaining his thorough approach. The completed work earned recognition from National Geographic and The New York Times. Retired cartographer Tom Patterson praises its uniqueness: no digital tools were used, just pencil and paper.
During the 2020 lockdowns, Thomas started his masterpiece: “Wild World.” Three years, approximately 2,602 working hours and 1,642 animal species later, “Wild World” is a hand-drawn map of our planet that both inspires and celebrates wonder. For three years, he carefully drew animals in their natural habitats using colored pencils and a magnifying glass (放大镜). The project, originally planned for six months, became an all-consuming labor of love that he considers his finest work.
Now a full-time artist, Thomas continues to push boundaries in hand-drawn cartography. From elementary schools to Stanford University, he shares his unique vision. “Every map tells two stories,” he says, “the geography we see and the passion that brings it to life.”
24. What inspired Thomas to return to mapmaking?
A. An opportunity to decorate a fridge.
B. An offer from National Geographic.
C. A journey in his childhood.
D. His interest in cartography.
25. How did Thomas work on his first project?
A. He worked mainly during the day.
B. He kept working on it to improve.
C. He used digital tools to save time.
D. He followed others’ instructions.
26. Which statement best describes Thomas and his map “Wild World”?
A. He sees it as a rough draft for bigger ideas.
B. He feels proud and emotionally connected to it.
C. He regrets spending too much time on it.
D. He believes it deserves more public attention.
27. What does Thomas’s experience show?
A. Education inspires creativity. B. Art shows truth.
C. Passion fuels achievement. D. Tools limit art.

In an age dominated by smartphones, researchers are discovering gradual cognitive (认知的) decrease linked to over-dependence on digital tools. A 2023 Cambridge University study found that frequent users of navigation apps had the ability to remember locations weakened by 23% compared to those who used traditional maps. Functional MRI (磁共振成像) scans showed less activity in the hippocampus (海马体的) of GPS-dependent individuals when recalling routes, while those using traditional navigation methods had stronger neural (神经的) connections in memory-related brain areas.
The cognitive effects go beyond navigation. A Tokyo University experiment revealed that language learners using apps with automatic translation features scored 15% lower in natural sentence construction tests than those who learned from textbooks. Cognitive scientist Dr. Eleanor Richards of Oxford explains, “Our brains adapt to technological shortcuts by weakening underused neural pathways — similar to how muscles atrophy (萎缩) without exercise.”
This realization has led to counter-trends in both education and business. In 2022, German software company TechSphere GmbH started “Analog Fridays”, requiring employees not to use digital tools but paper notebooks every Friday. After the policy, surveys found that meeting attendance went up by 19%, and employees reported 27% less mental tiredness. CEO Markus Weber says, “We don’t hate technology. But choosing to disconnect on purpose helps us get back our thinking ability.” Industry reports show that by 2023, 12% of new companies in Silicon Valley had similar rules.
Educational reforms reflect this shift. The University of Amsterdam now requires first-year students to take handwritten lecture notes, with these students scoring 14% higher on exams than those who used laptops. Stationery brand Moleskine has seen a 40% increase in planner sales since 2021, with 35% of buyers being tech workers who want to be productive without using screens.
Neuroscientists say we need balanced ways. Dr. Richards suggests “cognitive zoning”: using digital tools to store data, and keep traditional methods for important thinking tasks. As AI is used more, the key is not to refuse technology, but to create mixed systems that protect our basic human thinking abilities.
28. What did the Cambridge University study find about frequent users of navigation apps?
A. Decreased hippocampal activity. B. Enhanced memory storage.
C. Improved route planning speed. D. Stronger neural connections.
29. The underlined word “counter-trends” in Paragraph 3 refers to actions that ________.
A. promote the use of digital tools B. reduce screen time for cognitive benefits
C. criticize the limitations of technology D. study the impact of apps on learning
30. What does “cognitive zoning” recommend?
A. Completely stopping the use of digital tools.
B. Making digital storage faster and more effective.
C. Separating tasks and using different methods accordingly.
D. Controlling how quickly AI is combined with our work.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards digital tools?
A. Critical. B. Supportive. C. Objective. D. Unfavorable.

In Jakarta, apart from the narrow, unpaved road, the two-meter-high concrete coastal wall is the only thing that separates Susan’s small restaurant from the sea. Her family depends on that wall. Growing up here, Susan used to play on the beach in front of her house. But by the 2000s the beach had disappeared, and the sea frequently flooded the neighborhood.
In 2002, the government built the coastal wall, to give the residents peace of mind and time — a respite (暂缓) from the steady sinking of the land under the city and the steady rising of the sea. But just five years later, in 2007, the wall proved no match for the worst floods in Jakarta’s modern history.
Jakarta is now sinking (下沉) at a truly alarming rate — a rate that varies around the city but is up to 11 inches a year in the northern areas. About 40 percent of Jakarta is below sea level. By comparison, climate change is raising sea level by only less than an inch a year. But sinking land and rising sea both point toward the same outcome: regular flooding in Jakarta. “Jakarta is the center of administration, economy, culture, and entertainment. Over the years Jakarta has grown into a big city with no environmental support system.” says Andy, a lecturer at the University of Indonesia. Ultimately that’s why it is sinking today.
The situation is one reason the government announced that the nation’s capital would be moved away to a new city to be built on Borneo, which is now forest. But local communities aren’t so happy with the plan. They fear the project would destroy their land, forest, and livelihoods. In Jakarta, on the other hand, those who welcome the decision arguing that it will ease Jakarta’s burdens of crowding and pollution.
But as the government leaves the sinking capital, what is to become of the 10 million people like Susan who still live there?
32. What is the function of the coastal wall?
A. To prevent the land from sinking.
B. To keep the residents from floods.
C. To stop the steady rising of the sea.
D. To restore the beach for the residents.
33. What can we learn about the floods from Paragraph 3?
A. The floods were caused by nature and humans.
B. Climate change is the primary cause of the floods.
C. The rise of the sea level is the outcome of regular flooding.
D. The economic development has a great impact on the floods.
34. What can be learned from the passage about Jakarta?
A. It is no longer the nation’s capital now.
B. It is an underdeveloped city with a large population.
C. Its residents suffer a lot from the plan of the government.
D. Its measures to protect the environment are far from satisfactory.
35. What is the author’s attitude to the plan of the government?
A. Subjective. B. Supportive. C. Worried. D. Indifferent.

Eunice had loved music for as long as she could remember. When she was a baby, she would clap and sing along to the tunes on TV shows with delightful enthusiasm. When she saw some musical notes written in a magazine, she could sing them all. Her parents were amazed that she could read music at such a young age. So her father decided to gift her a piano to nurture her talent. Overjoyed, Eunice excelled in her piano playing.
Eunice’s mum, a conservative lady, has strict rules and unique insights into music. Classical music, to her, is a blend of wisdom and history. She believed it had the power to nourish the soul and deepen one’s understanding of the world. In contrast, she thought pop music lacked the lasting depth and beauty of classical music. Her mother discouraged her from playing that kind of music. “Jazz and blues are wicked and lead to things like dancing!” Her mum would say with a serious look on her face.
As Eunice grew older, she enjoyed diverse music from radios, record players, and street musicians. It all sounded amazing, and how could such wonderful music possibly be wicked? Her father, understanding her love for music, encouraged her to play all kinds of music when her mother was not home. He kept watching out of the front window to see if her mother was coming back.
“Here she comes! Stop playing!” he would whisper urgently whenever he spotted her mother approaching. Playing this diverse music became their cherished secret.
After years of studying, her family found it difficult to support her musical education. Fortunately, her piano teacher Miss Mazzy came to her aid and collected donations from the people of the town. The generous neighbours readily supported her, providing her with the funds she needed. To express her gratitude, Miss Mazzy arranged for Eunice to perform a special concert.
The girl was both excited and nervous. She worked especially hard to polish up twelve pieces, including several pop music pieces. However, she was afraid that her mother would come and find out her secret love for pop music during the concert.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As she stepped on the stage, she was surprised to see her mother in the front row.

【答案】24. A 25. B 26. B 27. C

【答案】28. A 29. B 30. C 31. C

Richards suggests “cognitive zoning”: using digital tools to store data, and keep traditional methods for important thinking tasks. (Richards博士建议采用“认知分区”:使用数字工具存储数据,并将传统方法用于重要的思考任务)”可知,“认知分区”的方法建议区分任务并采用相应的不同方法。故选C项。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“In an age dominated by smartphones, researchers are discovering gradual cognitive (认知的) decrease linked to over-dependence on digital tools.
【答案】32. B 33. A 34. D 35. C

故选A。

第二节 读后续写67题(满分25)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数为150词左右。
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As she stepped on the stage, she was surprised to see her mother in the front row.

After playing all the twelve pieces, Eunice’s mother approached her with pride.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
As she stepped on the stage, she was surprised to see her mother in the front row. Her heart raced and she felt scared. She took a deep breath, filling her lungs with air, and let it out slowly to calm her nerves. She glanced down at her hands, resting on the piano keys, and remembered all the long hours she had spent practicing. She lifted her gaze to meet her mother’s, who was watching her with a curious and proud expression. With a determined nod, Eunice placed her fingers on the keys and began her first piece, allowing the southing melody to wash away her worries and carry her into the world of music.
Paragraph 2:
After playing all the twelve pieces, Eunice’s mother approached her with pride. “I didn’t know you could play like this. I’m so proud of you,” she said, her voice filled with surprise and admiration. Tears welled up in Eunice’s eyes as she hugged her mother tightly. Eunice not only impressed her audience but also gained a deeper understanding and acceptance from her mother. From then on, she continued to explore various genres of music, always finding new ways to blend them into her own unique style.
