At first glance, the two photos look like exact copies: a young cyclist beneath the glaciers near the Everest Base Camp, with his bike on his shoulder, face fixed in determination. The same spot, same light, same shadows. Yet they were taken 40 years apart.
The first photo shows Perce Hughes, a cycling enthusiast who set out in 1984 at the age of 22 on an adventure that took him across Europe, through Asia and eventually to Sydney. In the second, William, Perce Hughes’ son, recreated his father’s pose almost four decades later.
“I was raised on my dad’s stories,” William told Cyclists Circle, “and the adventure was always calling to me.” And so, in September 2024, also at the age of 22, he carried out a plan of pedaling from the English town of Chatsworth on a 25,000-kilometer, 19-month ride to Sydney.
Finding the right bicycle wasn’t easy. William had searched online for the steel-framed touring bike his dad rode, and finally got it for £600. Then there was the task of determining where his dad’s photos were taken. He dived into records, mapping out every documented route. And for the trickier locations, he turned to AI for help. “It wasn’t always smooth, but I kept trying.” The result? A striking set of images — the same places, the same poses, sometimes even the same faces.
One photo shows Perce Hughes with a young boy and his parents. William tracked down the location and, although the parents had passed away, he was able to meet and pose with the man the young boy had become.
But the recreated moment that moved him the most was the Everest shot — bike on his back, glacier in the background. “Every time I stood on the exact spot where he would have stood, I felt a deeper connection to Dad. The only thing dividing us was time. I’ve heard stories from my dad my entire life, and now I’m there in the places where those stories took place. It’s very, very special.”
4. What do we know from the two photos?
A. They record the growth of a man.
B. They were shot at different times.
C. They display the power of nature.
D. They were taken by the same person.
5. Why did William come up with the plan?
A. To challenge his own limits. B. To recall his childhood.
C. To relive his father’s adventure. D. To photograph the journey.
6. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. Images of different locations. B. Worries before the adventure.
C. Memories preserved in photos. D. Preparations made for the journey.
7. What kind of person is William according to the text?
A. Adventurous and self-critical. B. Persistent and family-oriented.
C. Talented and technologically skilled. D. Reserved and independent.
B 5. C 6. D 7. B

Why does “bouba” sound round and “kiki” sound spiky (尖锐的)? This perception, known as “bouba-kiki” effect, is reliable all over the world, and for at least a century, scientists have considered it a clue to the origin of language, theorizing that maybe our ancestors built their first words upon these associations between sound and shape. But a new study published in Science adds an unexpected finding: baby chickens make these same pairings, suggesting that the link to human language may not be so unique.
The study was led by Maria Loconsole, a comparative psychologist at the University of Padua. She and her colleagues placed chicks in front of two panels: one featured a flowerlike shape with gently rounded curves; the other had a spiky shape like a cartoon explosion. They then played recordings of humans saying either “bouba” or “kiki” and observed the birds’ behavior. When the chicks heard “bouba,” 80 percent of them approached the round shape first and spent an average of more than three minutes exploring it compared with an average of just under one minute spent exploring the spiky shape. When the chicks heard “kiki,” the opposite occurred.
One long-standing theory that these associations are inspired by the shape your mouth makes when you say each word can now be ruled out, since the chicks showed the effect despite being unable to speak. Instead the “bouba-kiki” effect may originate from the physical properties of objects themselves. When round objects hit the ground or roll, they typically produce more continuous, low-frequency sounds than spiky ones. A built-in grasp of those dynamics, linking sight and sound, could help newborn animals quickly make sense of their environment, possibly to locate food or avoid predators
The “bouba-kiki” effect may have played a role in the emergence of language. But for chickens, this same tendency seems to serve a more evolutionary purpose. “Even if language is unique to humans,” Loconsole says, “that doesn’t mean that it comes from an ability that is unique to humans.”
8. What does the new study focus on?
A. The origin of human language. B. Sound-shape connections in chicks.
C. Animals’ recognition of shapes. D. Brain-behavior relationships of birds.
9. In what way do the chicks respond differently to the two sounds?
A. Sound localization. B. Reaction speed.
C. Exploration preference. D. Matching accuracy.
10. What is paragraph 3 mainly about concerning the effect?
A. Its historical context. B. Its potential application.
C. Its overlooked limitation. D. Its possible explanation.
11. What does Loconsole say about the effect?
A. It originated in birds. B. It shows evolutionary tendency.
C. It’s shared across species. D. It’s vital to language emergence.
B 9. C 10. D 11. C
根据第一段“But a new study published in Science adds an unexpected finding: baby chickens make these same pairings, suggesting that the link to human language may not be so unique.(但发表在《科学》杂志上的一项新研究有了意外发现:雏鸡也会做出同样的配对,这表明这种与人类语言的关联可能并非人类独有。)”
根据第二段“When the chicks heard ‘bouba,’ 80 percent of them approached the round shape first and spent an average of more than three minutes exploring it compared with an average of just under one minute spent exploring the spiky shape. When the chicks heard ‘kiki,’ the opposite occurred.(当雏鸡听到‘bouba’时,80%会先靠近圆润形状,平均花三分多钟探索它,而探索尖锐形状的时间平均不到一分钟。听到‘kiki’时则相反。)”可知,雏鸡对两种声音的不同反应体现在探索偏好上。故选C。
【10题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“One long-standing theory that these associations are inspired by the shape your mouth makes when you say each word can now be ruled out, since the chicks showed the effect despite being unable to speak. Instead the “bouba-kiki” effect may originate from the physical properties of objects themselves.(一种长期存在的理论认为,这些关联是由你说每个单词时嘴巴的形状引起的,现在可以排除这种说法,因为小鸡尽管不会说话,但还是表现出了这种效果。相反,“bouba-kiki”效应可能源于物体本身的物理特性。)”可知,本段主要是对该效应产生的原因给出可能的解释。故选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““Even if language is unique to humans,” Loconsole says, “that doesn’t mean that it comes from an ability that is unique to humans.”(洛康索莱说:“即使语言是人类独有的,这也并不意味着它源自一种人类独有的能力。”)”
D
Scientists just calculated for the first time exactly how many microplastic particles (微粒) are floating in Earth’s atmosphere. The number is almost unimaginable: 600 quadrillion (千万亿) — a 6 followed by 17 zeros, enough to make more than 1.5 billion plastic water bottles, about 300 for every person on the planet. And it’s all floating in the sky.
The research, led by Utah State University’s Janice Brahney, combined data from 2,782 measurements across the globe with atmospheric movement models. “We’ve known for years that microplastics are everywhere — in the oceans, on mountains, even in rain,” Brahney said. “But the atmosphere was a big blind spot. Now we have a number, and it’s far beyond what we expected.”
The researchers then traced these particles back to their origins, uncovering a surprising range of sources. Roads are the biggest contributor — the tiny pieces produced by wearing vehicle tires float in the air. Oceans also play a significant role: waves crashing onto shores can send microplastics from seawater into the air. Other sources include agricultural dust and particles released from burning waste.
Yet the presence of 600 quadrillion particles in the sky is not merely a matter of numbers; it carries consequences that extend beyond the air itself. Once deposited, these particles can pollute soil and water, entering the food chain. In fact, every day, as much as millions of plastic bottles’ worth of microplastics settles onto Earth’s surface. More surprisingly, atmospheric microplastics may influence cloud formation and even accelerate ice melt by darkening the surface of snow and ice.
However, scientists caution that much remains unknown. The health effects of breathing in atmospheric microplastics are still poorly understood, though early research suggests potential links to lung problems. How long these particles stay in the air and where they eventually land also require further investigation.
Despite these uncertainties, the study sends a clear message: plastic pollution is not just an ocean problem. It has become an atmospheric issue on a global scale — one that, as Brahney put it, “We’re only beginning to understand.”
12. What is the primary contribution of the Utah State University study?
A. Identifying the major sources of microplastic pollution.
B. Comparing microplastic levels in different environments.
C. Providing the first global estimate of atmospheric microplastics.
D. Warning people about the health risks of breathing in microplastics.
13. What does the underlined word “deposited” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Concentrated. B. Trapped. C. Released. D. Dropped.
14. Which aspect of atmospheric microplastics may be the focus of future research?
A. Its migration routes. B. Its monitoring methods.
C. Its diverse sources. D. Its environmental impacts.
15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. A Warning: The Threat of Microplastics
B. Road Traffic: An Unexpected Source of Pollution
C. A Hidden Crisis: 600 Quadrillion Particles in the Sky
D. Microplastic Particles: A Problem of Various Origins
C 13. D 14. A 15. C
文章开头明确说“Scientists just calculated for the first time exactly how many microplastic particles (微粒) are floating in Earth’s atmosphere.(科学家们首次精确计算出地球大气中漂浮着多少微塑料颗粒。)”,第二段Brahney也说“But the atmosphere was a big blind spot. Now we have a number, and it’s far beyond what we expected.(但大气一直是一个巨大的盲区。现在我们有了一个数字,而且它远远超出了我们的预期。)”可知,研究的首要贡献是首次给出大气中微塑料的全球估算数值(600千万亿)。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词下文“these particles can pollute soil and water, entering the food chain. In fact, every day, as much as millions of plastic bottles’ worth of microplastics settles onto Earth’s surface.(这些颗粒会污染土壤和水源,并进入食物链。事实上,每天都有数百万个塑料瓶大小的微塑料颗粒落在地球表面。)”可知,这些颗粒要从空中下降后才会污染土壤和水源,deposited的意思是“沉降”,和Dropped意思相近。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“How long these particles stay in the air and where they eventually land also require further investigation.(这些颗粒在空气中停留多长时间、最终落在哪里,也需要进一步研究。)”
通读全文,尤其是第一段“Scientists just calculated for the first time exactly how many microplastic particles (微粒) are floating in Earth’s atmosphere. The number is almost unimaginable: 600 quadrillion (千万亿) — a 6 followed by 17 zeros, enough to make more than 1.5 billion plastic water bottles, about 300 for every person on the planet. And it’s all floating in the sky.(科学家们首次精确计算出地球大气中漂浮着多少微塑料颗粒。

This time, Mira wasn’t asking the AI to polish her essays. Instead, she typed a question that had been pressing on her heart for weeks: “Why won’t Grandma eat properly?”
It was early January. After finishing her exams, Mira had returned to her hometown to spend some quiet days with her grandmother. The old woman had once been a legend — she’d worked as a tailor (裁缝), made dresses for half the village and saved enough to open her own shop.
Time had taken its toll. Now her eyesight had dimmed, her fingers trembled, but she was still that legendary woman who lived on her own terms. Whenever someone ladled (用勺子舀) soup into her bowl, she would push it away, murmuring, “I don’t need it. Save it for yourselves.” Every meal played out the same way. It broke Mira’s heart.
Actually, the family was doing well. There was plenty of food, plenty of love. So why did eating — a simple, everyday act — seem like a burden to her?
She tried reasoning with her, but the more she talked, the more Grandma resisted. Until one day, in a moment of frustration, she blurted out, “Grandma, you make me so sad when you act like this.” The old woman froze, then sighed. “I’m over seventy. I won’t be around much longer. It doesn’t matter how I eat.”
The words cut deep. Mira thought about taking her to a psychologist (心理医生) but knew she’d refuse. So she turned to an old companion, the AI.
The response came quickly. Grandma was refusing food because she felt like she no longer had a place in the family. The AI offered suggestions: Help her feel secure and needed.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为 150 左右;

Paragraph 2: As meals became less of a battle, Mira decided to relight the sparkle in grandmother’s eyes.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
With AI’s assistance, Mira began her plan. First, she worked with AI to create customized recipes for Grandma, accounting for her age-related digestive issues and past preferences to make nutritious, easy-to-swallow dishes. Meanwhile, following AI’s suggestion to make Grandma feel valued, the family started to shower her with more attention — sitting with her at meals, chatting warmly, expressing appreciation and encouraging her to eat. As days passed, Grandma began to sense the genuine care and importance the family placed on her. Gradually, the once-stubborn resistance to food faded away.
As meals became less of a battle, Mira decided to relight the sparkle in grandmother’s eyes. “It’s time to make her feel needed,” Mira thought, appealing to Grandma’s pride as the village’s best tailor and asking her to make a special outfit for a school event. Grandma’s eyes lit up immediately, a spark of the old force she once had returning. Mira and Grandma spent hours crafting together — Grandma patiently guiding her through measuring, cutting, and sewing, sharing stories of her tailor days. This interaction restored Grandma’s self-worth, strengthened their bond, and gave her a new lease on life. Her appetite improved with renewed energy from skill recognition, leaving Mira amazed at AI’s role as an outstanding virtual psychologist.
