No Plastic Water Bottles
Dear fellow students,
Our school is launching an activity “No Plastic Water Bottles”. Plastic water bottles cause pollution as they’re made from non-renewable resources and take ages to decompose. In addition, they often end up in the ocean, posing a serious threat to marine life.
Here are some suggestions. Bring reusable bottles and refill them at school. At school events, use other containers for water. Also, spread the message about the harm of plastic bottles via posters and class discussions.
Let’s act now for a greener school!

There is a popular Chinese proverb that often leads to two different arguments. The proverb is 21 (literal) translated as “to read ten thousand books and travel ten thousand miles.” The saying 22 (quote) for the first time in Notes from the Painting-Meditation Studio 23 (write) by Dong Qichang, a famous painter, calligrapher and politician in the late years of the Ming Dynasty.
Dong’s saying was urging people 24 (study) more and gain knowledge, then put 25 they learned into practice while further broadening their horizons. He thought this was the ideal philosophy of Chinese scholars.
However, later on, some people twisted Dong’s saying into “to travel ten thousand miles beats reading ten thousand books”. 26 latter version obviously emphasizes that experience is more important and meaningful than what one can learn from books.
The two arguments, no matter how you understand them, both compare reading 27 traveling. But this is not a unique Chinese idea. Westerners have had similar reflections. For instance, a western 28 (special), once said: “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.” An American investment banker wrote in his book, “I am a 29 (passion) traveler, and from the time I was a child, travel formed me as much as my formal education.”
All these sayings and quotations seem to agree on one point: By seeing new 30 (place) and meeting new people, travel can be as enlightening and attractive as reading books.

Remember when ...
Do you ever find yourself looking back on earlier times, remembering happy moments from the past? Nostalgia, the feeling 31 with remembering happiness in the past, is often described as bittersweet. It is bitter because you long for things that are no more but sweet as you enjoy remembering your past happiness. Some psychologists even distinguish positive nostalgia from negative nostalgia, depending on whether happy emotions or sad ones 32 a person’s experience.
In today’s culture, expressions of nostalgia are becoming common. People share old social media posts remembering the good old days. They buy products made years ago from secondhand stores and enjoy media that reminds them of their childhoods. Taking note of these 33 companies are offering products like those of earlier decades. Social media platforms offer filters that can make pictures look like old photographs. Some restaurants are even putting together menus that 34 some dishes from the 1970s. And the fact that people are buying all these products shows that those people want to experience nostalgia.
This desire for nostalgia makes a lot of 35 because this feeling has psychological benefits. It can improve a person’s mood and self-esteem (自我价值感), sometimes helping people handle difficult transitions in life. It can also help people connect with others as they share memories.
But nostalgia can also lead to 36 problems. Focusing on the past can make people less satisfied with the present and make it harder to find 37 to improve their current situation. Nostalgia can also lead people to view earlier stages of life with rose-colored glasses. They may forget about or 38 past hardships, thinking only about the positive side of things.
How can you find a balance, remembering the past without letting it interfere with the present? Start by making a conscious effort to recognize and be 39 for the positives in your current situation. While remembering the past, focus on lessons you’ve learned and ways you’ve grown and changed over the years. And share these memories with others to deepen relationships by learning more about each other or 40 over shared experiences.
Nostalgia can bring many benefits to individuals and to communities, but we all must remain cautious of its potential downsides.

The UR (University of Rochester) Libraries’ event, “Find it For Free”, held on January 21, provided students with information on finding low-to-no-cost course materials. Librarian Eloise Stevens highlighted the financial burden textbooks place on students and the need for resources they might need. The event introduced three main options for accessing affordable course materials:
Course Reserves: Materials placed on course reserve can be checked out for a short period, typically two hours. This system allows students in specific classes to borrow materials, but if materials aren’t registered, students may experience difficulties accessing them. Professors must refer (提交) physical materials to the library first.
UR and Public Libraries: Students can search for additional materials in the DiscoverUR catalog. While some e-books in the UR Library have unlimited access, others have usage restrictions. Students can also use digital library cards for the New York Public Library and Monroe County Library, which offer e-books and audiobooks through Libby, providing another valuable resource for course materials.
Open Web Sources: Several open web platforms offer access to course materials, including the Internet Archive, Project Gutenberg, and Hathi Trust Digital Library. These resources are particularly useful for materials published before 1929, which will no longer be protected by copyright (版权) in 2025, and for some more recent academic works.
Students can find a guide to these options on the library’s website and reach out to subject librarians for further assistance.
56.Why was the event “Find it For Free” started?
A.To help students save money. B.To teach academic research skills.
C.To advertise public library services. D.To encourage students to donate books.
57.What must happen before students can access Course Reserves materials?
A.Students must present a valid student ID.
B.Students must apply at least 2 hours ahead.
C.Professors must initiate the process of registration.
D.The materials must be made available electronically.
58.What makes Open Web Sources unique?
A.They lend mainly physical materials. B.They are based at university libraries.
C.They offer copyright-free older works. D.They are specially designed for college students.

One of the biggest risks a modern student faces is a broken phone or laptop. Jake Hertz and Isaac Roberts are two UR students that have launched a new business to fix this exact need: Campus Tech Repair.
Hertz and Roberts started their business three weeks ago. In those three weeks, they had amazing success. In the first day they had posters up, they received nearly a dozen calls from students. Despite not having backgrounds in business, the two gladly accepted the challenges of starting up such an in-demand service.
Hertz and Roberts experienced such a high demand because of the lack of any other hardware repair service on campus. The IT Center itself only provides software fixes: Hertz supposed that this was because of the increased liabilities (法律责任) faced by repair services. Hertz and Roberts did make customers sign a release of liability, yet they also wanted to build a higher level of trust. This, Hertz noted, was the only real challenge that they expected to face.
Becoming directly affiliated (隶属) with or sponsored by the school could solve the problem of community trust. Hertz and Roberts have already engaged in conversation with the University toward this end.
The Ain Center for Entrepreneurship they turn to seeks to “identify and create new partnerships with students, alumni, local businesses, and nonprofit organizations.”
One program of the Ain Center that the two wish to look into is the “Student Incubator (孵化器).” Such a move would allow them to develop a more-permanent structure to Campus Tech Repair. The Incubator provides resources such as furnished office space, Wi-Fi, access to conference room, and guidance. Yet, there’s a problem with this.
“The appeal of what we do is that we’re on campus, so we both just work out of our rooms,” Hertz said.
Hertz is optimistic about the future of the business. They believe that with the support of the University, and the community, they could become an inseparable part of campus services.
59.Why did the business of Hertz and Roberts start well?
A.Because it was much needed.
B.Because they were well-known.
C.Because they were expert in business.
D.Because the school provided no software services.
60.How did they try to win customers’ trust?
A.Making them sign a release of liability.
B.Seeking cooperation with the university.
C.Establishing partnerships with other students.
D.Looking for sponsorship from local businesses.
61.For Hertz and Roberts, what’s the problem with Student Incubator?
A.They can’t afford the cost of it. B.They can’t use all its resources.
C.They are not qualified to join it. D.They don’t want to work in its offices.
62.What is the passage about?
A.Student Incubator of the university.
B.Student experts in hardware repairs.
C.Students start a business on campus.
D.Students work their way through university.

Do you have any travel plans for 2025? Travel magazines like Conde Nast Traveler and Booking.com, one of the largest online travel agencies, have offered their predictions for travel trends.
Noctourism
The trend of noctourism refers to traveling to fully enjoy the beauty of the night, according to Booking.com.It sees tourists searching for dark-sky areas to appreciate the solar system and take part in activities such as stargazing (观星). As global temperatures continue to rise and daytime heat, especially in summer, becomes uncomfortable for many, people will often plan their trips around destinations that offer activities in cooler evenings and early mornings. While most activities center around the night sky, others happen on the ground, from city tours at night to full moon picnics by the sea. “Noctourism is set to transform travel in 2025 as night owl (夜猫子) travelers are increasingly seeking unique after-dark experiences,” Jay Stevens, CEO of travel company Wayfairer Travel, told CNBC.
Passports to immortality
While achieving “immortality” (永生) might seem unrealistic, our interest in living longer and staying healthy shows no sign of slowing down. Data from Booking.com reveals that health-focused trips will take center stage in 2025, with tourists seeking experiences designed to improve their health. These experiences include red light therapy and cryotherapy (冷冻疗法), offering travelers long-term benefits beyond immediate pleasure. As research indicates that staying socially active and spending time outdoors can significantly boost health, many travel destinations have introduced health-focused activities such as group hikes. In the future, travel will become more flexible as we begin to view our health as the ultimate journey, Booking.com predicted.
Detour destinations
Getting a little lost on purpose, driving down an unknown road and finding a lovely shop along the way — detours (绕道) have always been part of the travel experience. Simply going from Point A to Point B can feel a bit boring. Detour travel focuses on discovering smaller, less popular places close to the main sights and spending time there. For example, the city of Reims (兰斯) is a popular detour from Paris, as is Santa Barbara (圣巴巴拉) from Los Angeles. “In Europe, rail travel is the easiest way to do this — once you start looking at train timetables,it’s too tempting not to add an extra stop,” Tom Barber, co-founder of the travel company Original Travel, told Conde Nast Traveler.
63.Why may Noctourism become more popular in 2025?
A.Because tourists are becoming more accustomed to the dark at night.
B.Because travel agencies offer more promotions for activities at night.
C.Because astronomy such as stargazing is drawing global attention.
D.Because it offers agreeable temperatures and special experiences.
64.What is the primary focus of the section “Detour destinations”?
A.The recommendation of visiting less-popular sights.
B.The risks of getting lost while in suburban areas.
C.The popularity of traveling in large crowded cities.
D.The necessity of booking train tickets early.
65.What will people gain from health-focused trips?
A.Mastery over several therapies.
B.Cooperation from outdoor activities.
C.Benefits of health in the long run.
D.Flexibility in social relationships.
66.How does the author make the predictions of travel trends convincing?
A.By sharing travel experiences of famous people.
B.By analyzing cause-effect and data from websites.
C.By comparing travel trends in history with future ones.
D.By including names of well-known tourist attractions.
Section C(8’)
Directions: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
All Rise
With just over 500 different species of shark classified, and a further two dozen waiting to be formally scientifically named, shark classification is not for the faint-hearted. 67
Sporting a wide, flattened head that is uniquely shaped like a double-headed hammer, it’s not hard to see how these sharks got their name. The eyes and openings at the end of the nose are located at either end of the “hammer” — or cephalopodic, as it’s technically called.
68 While undoubtedly giving the sharks extra lift, the cephalopodic may also help them make sharper turns in the water. The widely spaced eyes allow for effective three-D vision, while the head’s broad shape also houses a sense organ operating like an underwater metal detector, it helps the predators (捕食性动物) to detect prey (猎物) hidden on or just under the sea-floor deposit.
Though widespread, the scalloped hammerhead, one of the nine species of hammerhead, is most commonly encountered in the Hammerhead Triangle in the eastern Pacific. While it can be relatively easily observed at a number of sites, particularly around seamounts, there are only a few places where it gathers in large numbers. 69 These groups of sharks tend to consist mostly of females, with the males remaining out in deeper waters.
At locations such as the Hammerhead Triangle, numbers can reach into the hundreds or even, on occasion, thousands. As the sharks tend to assemble relatively close to the water’s surface, this is one ocean spectacle (壮观的景象) for diver.
With its fins highly prized as the key ingredient in shark-fin soup, it’s no surprise that the scalloped hammerhead has experienced a dramatic population decline. Any sharks caught are often subjected to the frankly horrible treatment of ‘finning’, whereby fins are sliced off and the bodies thrown overboard.
However, with hammerheads consistently ranking among the world’s top underwater wildlife attractions, shark tourism now contributes millions towards regional economies, thereby presenting a sustainable alternative to fishing them into extinction. 70
A.Added to this, the shark is often the victim of fishing bycatch.
B.The explanation behind the shape of the hammerhead’s head has long been debated.
C.But there is one group that everyone would immediately recognize the hammerheads.
D.The scalloped hammerhead can be distinguished by the V-shaped cut at its cephalopodic.
E.As most predators at the top of the food chain operate as ‘lone wolves’, this is considered highly unusual behaviour.
F.Doubtless, those enjoying this magnificent spectacle agree that the fins look far better on the sharks than they do floating in a bowl of soup.
V. Summary writing (10’)
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea of the passage and how it is illustrated. Use your own words as far as possible.
We Need to Take Meditation More Seriously as Medicine
A new review study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Internal Medicine, suggests that the ancient Eastern practice of mindful meditation can offer real help for patients with depression, anxiety, and pain.
Dr. Madhav Goyal is the lead author of the recent JAMA study. He reviewed 47 clinical trials involving more than 3500 participants with mild anxiety or depression, and found that those who practiced mindful meditation saw a 5-10%improvement in anxiety symptoms and a 10-20% reduction in depressive symptoms.
What’s most striking about the JAMA findings is that people weren’t meditating for very long. Many in the reviewed studies meditated for as little as 2. 5 hours per week for two months. As Dr. Goyal points out, because meditation is a skill that’s learned over time, it’s unlikely that the respondents reached a high level in a short time. So according to him, it’s reasonable to think that people would experience even greater benefits with more rigorous training and practice.
Unfortunately though, it’s precisely those realities of meditation — that it is a state you can teach yourself to achieve and improve with discipline — that might weaken its validity (有效性) with physicians and patients. For example, professor Mark K. Blum, a Buddhist Studies expert at the University of California, Berkeley, believes some medical professionals may doubt the value of meditation because our culture has shifted so heavily in favor of quantitative measurement. “Medical doctors are practicing a form of science, and therefore expect to see scientific measurement,” Blum explains. “But how do you measure meditation?”
In Dr. Goyal’s view, critics of meditation have a misunderstanding of what science is. It has nothing to do with molecules or drugs, he says. Rather, medical science is a “systematic exploration of what is not known”, whatever that may be — and areas like meditation desperately need more exploration, and the funding to do it.

Section A(10’)

One of the biggest risks a modern student faces is a broken phone or laptop. Jake Hertz and Isaac Roberts are two UR students that have launched a new business to fix this exact need: Campus Tech Repair.

【答案】63.D 64.A 65.C 66.B

While most activities center around the night sky, others happen on the ground, from city tours at night to full moon picnics by the sea.
根据最后一段中“Detour travel focuses on discovering smaller, less popular places close to the main sights and spending time there. For example, the city of Reims is a popular detour from Paris, as is Santa Barbara from Los Angeles. (绕道旅行注重发现靠近主要景点的小型、不太受欢迎的地方,并在那里度过一段时间。例如,兰斯市是从巴黎出发的热门绕道目的地,圣巴巴拉则是从洛杉矶出发的热门绕道目的地)”可知,“绕道目的地”这一部分主要介绍了不太受欢迎的景点的推荐。故选A。
根据第三段中“Data from Booking.com reveals that health-focused trips will take center stage in 2025, with tourists seeking experiences designed to improve their health. (Booking.com的数据显示,以健康为重点的旅行将在2025年成为焦点,游客们寻求旨在改善健康的体验。这些体验包括红光疗法和冷冻疗法,为旅行者提供超越即时愉悦的长期益处)”可知,人们从以健康为重点的旅行中可以获得长期健康益处。故选C。
66.推理判断题。根据第二段中“The trend of noctourism refers to traveling to fully enjoy the beauty of the night, according to Booking.com. It sees tourists searching for dark-sky areas to appreciate the solar system and take part in activities such as stargazing. As global temperatures continue to rise and daytime heat, especially in summer, becomes uncomfortable for many, people will often plan their trips around destinations that offer activities in cooler evenings and early mornings. (根据Booking.com的说法,夜间旅游趋势指的是为了充分欣赏夜晚之美而进行的旅行。它看到游客们寻找黑暗的天空区域来欣赏太阳系,并参加观星等活动。随着全球气温持续上升,白天的炎热,尤其是在夏季,让许多人感到不适,人们通常会围绕在凉爽的夜晚和清晨提供活动的目的地来计划他们的旅行)”和第三段“While achieving “immortality” might seem unrealistic, our interest in living longer and staying healthy shows no sign of slowing down. Data from Booking.com reveals that health-focused trips will take center stage in 2025, with tourists seeking experiences designed to improve their health. (虽然实现“永生”似乎不切实际,但我们对长寿和保持健康的兴趣并没有减弱的迹象。Booking.com的数据显示,以健康为重点的旅行将在2025年成为焦点,游客们寻求旨在改善健康的体验)”可知,作者通过分析因果关系和网站数据,使得旅游趋势的预测令人信服。故选B。

67.根据上文“With just over 500 different species of shark classified, and a further two dozen waiting to be formally scientifically named, shark classification is not for the faint-hearted.(只有500多种不同的鲨鱼被分类,还有二十几种等待正式的科学命名,鲨鱼分类不是胆小的人可以接受的)”以及第二段“Sporting a wide, flattened head that is uniquely shaped like a double-headed hammer, it’s not hard to see how these sharks got their name.(它们的头又宽又平,独特的形状就像双头锤,不难看出这些鲨鱼是如何得名的)”可知,本句主要引出后文文章主要介绍的鲨鱼类型,故C选项“但是有一个群体是每个人都会立刻认出来的,那就是双髻鲨”符合语境,故选C。
68.根据后文“While undoubtedly giving the sharks extra lift, the cephalopodic may also help them make sharper turns in the water. The widely spaced eyes allow for effective three-D vision, while the head’s broad shape also houses a sense organ operating like an underwater metal detector, it helps the predators (捕食性动物) to detect prey (猎物) hidden on or just under the sea-floor deposit.(毫无疑问,头足可以给鲨鱼额外的提升力,同时也可以帮助它们在水中做出更尖锐的转弯。宽间距的眼睛可以提供有效的三维视觉,而头部的宽形状也容纳了一个像水下金属探测器一样的感觉器官,它可以帮助捕食者探测隐藏在海底沉积物上或下面的猎物)”可知,本段主要介绍了特殊的头部对于这种鲨鱼捕食的作用,故D选项“双髻鲨可以通过其头足部的V形切口来区分”符合语境,故选D。
69.根据上文“Though widespread, the scalloped hammerhead, one of the nine species of hammerhead, is most commonly encountered in the Hammerhead Triangle in the eastern Pacific. While it can be relatively easily observed at a number of sites, particularly around seamounts, there are only a few places where it gathers in large numbers.(双髻鲨是九种双髻鲨中的一种,虽然分布广泛,但在东太平洋的双髻鲨三角区最常见。
70.根据上文“However, with hammerheads consistently ranking among the world’s top underwater wildlife attractions, shark tourism now contributes millions towards regional economies, thereby presenting a sustainable alternative to fishing them into extinction.(然而,由于双髻鲨一直是世界上最受欢迎的水下野生动物之一,鲨鱼旅游现在为地区经济贡献了数百万美元,从而提供了一个可持续的替代捕捞它们灭绝的选择)”可知,上文提到了双髻鲨发展成为了旅游业,带来了很高的经济受益,本句为本段最后一句,故承接上文,说明发展观赏鲨鱼旅游业促进鲨鱼的保护,故F选项“毫无疑问,那些欣赏这一壮观景象的人都同意,鲨鱼身上的鳍比它们漂浮在一碗汤里好看多了”符合语境,“floating in a bowl of soup”与上一段“With its fins highly prized as the key ingredient in shark-fin soup”相对应。故选F。
71.____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
71.A new study found that meditation can help ease people’s anxiety and depression and that people can benefit more if they practice meditating for longer. Though some medical professionals still don’t believe in the effect of meditation because it can’t be measured, Dr. Goyal, the lead author of the study, thinks it is worth exploring.

(show)(汉译英)
_______________________________________________________________________________
At the graduation ceremony, Li Hua showed his heartfelt gratitude to the teachers who shared weal and woe with him.
表达感激”为show one’s gratitude to,“和他一起同甘共苦的老师们”译为the teachers who shared weal and woe with him,其中关系代词who引导限制性定语从句修饰先行词the teachers,从句中动宾短语share weal and woe意为“同甘共苦”。 At the graduation ceremony, Li Hua showed his heartfelt gratitude to the teachers who shared weal and woe with him.
_______________________________________________________________________________
Why not try to talk about what bothers you? There’s a good chance that a small action can lead to a more relaxed mindset.
There’s a good chance that...;从句主语“一个微小的举动”为a small action;表示“带来”为lead to,情态动词can后跟动词原形形式,从句宾语“更放松的心态”为a more relaxed mindset。 Why not try to talk about what bothers you? There’s a good chance that a small action can lead to a more relaxed mindset.
_______________________________________________________________________________
Having a balanced life, having time to socialize with friends, and even reaching out to a therapist, is the key to having inner peace.
社交”为socialize with sb.,宾语为friends;表示“甚至”用even,表示“向……伸出援助之手”为reach out;“治疗师”为therapist。所以主语部分为Having a balanced life, having time to socialize with friends, and even reaching out to a therapist。 的关键”用the key to;“内心的”为inner;“和平”为peace。 Having a balanced life, having time to socialize with friends, and even reaching out to a therapist, is the key to having inner peace.
_______________________________________________________________________________
Realizing that his conceit and incompetence had brought serious consequences, the surgeon obviously had a queasy feeling in his stomach, the sweat on his forehead signing anxiety.
Realizing that his conceit and incompetence had brought serious consequences, the surgeon obviously had a queasy feeling in his stomach, the sweat on his forehead signing anxiety.
