When a hurricane hit her hometown, Karen Lauder chose to stay at home because she didn’t know how strong the storm would be. Karen was 84 years old and depended on a wheelchair to get around because she was missing a leg. Her son, Johnny Lauder, tried repeatedly to get her to leave, but she refused.
Johnny and his whole family live within a few blocks of one another. They kept in touch with Karen as the storm continued violently (猛烈地) outside, watching the water rising dangerously all around them. When Karen reported that the water in her house had reached her bottom, Johnny knew he had to take action.
First, Johnny ensured his sons and their pets were taken care of. Then, he jumped out of a window and began to swim. Johnny used to work as a rescue swimmer. He is obviously a strong swimmer, but the flood water was filled with dangerous materials. There was also a strong current, and he had to swim against it for most of his trip to Karen’s. As he made his way through the water, Johnny stopped periodically to snap selfies (自拍) to show his worried family that he was okay.
Johnny was racing against the clock. He knew he only had a short period of time to get there before the water rose above Karen’s head. It took him 40 minutes to swim four blocks. The sound of Karen shouting inside was music to his ears!
“If it would’ve been 20 minutes later, she wouldn’t be here,” Johnny said. “She’s never been happier to see me.”
Karen is now safe, although she is in the hospital being treated for infections (感染) she got in the water. The family have all lost everything they owned, including their houses, but they’re grateful just to be here.
4. Why did Karen refuse to leave her house when the hurricane came?

5. What challenge did Johnny face while swimming to his mother?
A. Sharks in the water. B. Strong current.

When people think of Beijing, the hutong style always comes to mind. It is no overstatement to say within hutong lives the city’s history.
The word “hutong” was borrowed from the Mongolian word to mean “water well” about 700 years ago. Later it referred to a place where people live. Hutong we see today are made up of small paths formed by walls of siheyuan. They were built during the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties.
When the People’s Republic of China was founded in 1949, there were more than 3,000 hutong. Most of the city’s population lived in this traditional housing. But with the modernization of the city in the 1980s and early 1990s, many hutong were demolished to build roads, tall buildings and modern houses.
The government has recognized the importance of hulong to Chinese cultural heritage (遗产). In 2002, Beijing listed 40 protected historical areas and increased its efforts to rebuild some key relics and older streets in the city. Nearly 500 hutong have survived.
Hutong that still exist are like oases (绿洲) of calm in the noisy city. Walking through them, it’s common to see groups of elderly people sitting together playing cards, mahjong (麻将) or Chinese chess. In the early mornings and evenings, they gather to practice traditional forms of exercise such as Taijiquan as well as dancing and singing songs or Peking Opera. Hutong have become a museum of Beijing’s customs and history.

The next major tech advance will be AI agents — smart helpers that complete many difficult tasks for us without needing constant commands (不断的指令). What is an AI agent? A quick refresher: Most people are familiar with generative AI, like ChatGPT, which creates text and images based on prompts (提示). AI agents don’t just respond to prompts; they take action, completing various difficult tasks without any help from us.
For example, while ChatGPT can offer instructions of how to make a dish, an AI agent could order the ingredients (配料), control smart kitchen tools, and improve the process each time. Imagine planning a trip: instead of you checking flights and hotels, an AI agent finds the best deals immediately. If your flight cancels, it fixes your plans automatically (自动地) — working 24/7 to protect your time. For smart home lovers, agents will control all devices through one simple command, replacing confusing apps.
Daily helpers like Siri will become super assistants (助手)that: manage your schedule, learn your habits through conversation and help achieve long-term goals. They’ll organize messages across apps, blocking unwanted contacts while ensuring important messages reach you. Soon, agents could deal with almost all phone tasks — shopping, booking rides, meals, banking, and social media-freeing hours daily. This will change how humans use technology as deeply as the Internet did.
However, letting machines make decisions raises worries: Could they make bad money choices? Will they truly act in our best interest? Since agents connect to other systems, strong safety rules are needed to prevent problems while using their help.
Despite the risks, these AI helpers will change work, home life, and free time, making daily tasks simpler and faster. Their ability to solve problems and provide information will reshape our world, though challenges like job changes and privacy must be addressed.
12. What is an advantage of AI agents over ChatGPT?
A. Responding to text prompts. B. Creating images automatically.
C. Performing tasks independently. D. Giving instructions of making a dish.
13. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. AI agents can help order food. B. Siri will block all the messages.
C. Siri has become a robot assistant. D. AI agents will replace phones in the future.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards AI helpers?
A. Concerned. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Supportive.
15. Which is the best title for the text?
A. Dangers of AI Agents B. How AI Agents Change Daily Life
C. Smart Homes Are Facing Challenges D. The End of Human Decision-Making
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15. B
