It was believed that she couldn’t live long in a hospital short of necessary equipment (设备). “But even with the smallest chance, my team and I had to try our best,” said Wen.
To keep the baby warm, Wen coated Beauty with a soft cloth. The most dangerous moment arrived when Beauty’s heart beat only 30 times a minute. Wen stayed close to Beauty to look after her carefully and patiently for almost five hours. Finally, Beauty was able to breathe by herself.
By the time of her leaving hospital over two months later, Beauty weighed 2,050 grams. The medical team and her family celebrated the great moment with laughter and tears. Beauty’s mother held Wen’s hands and said, “I want my daughter to be a doctor like you.”

Today the earth is getting warmer and warmer. But hundreds of years ago, people had a different problem—a 400-year cold period! From the 1400s to the 1800s, winters in the northern half of the earth were colder and longer than they are now. Scientists call this time the “Little Ice Age”.
The colder weather brought many serious problems. Plants died of cold and illness spread among people. People had to spend a lot more time collecting wood for fires to keep their houses warm. And sometimes, a hard piece of ice would slide down (滑落) a mountain and destroy (摧毁) some villages.
Scientists think the Little Ice Age was caused by forces that people could not control. One cause, in their opinion, was the sun. The sun often has “storms” of energy called sunspots (太阳黑子). During the Little Ice Age, there were fewer sunspots than there are today. With fewer sunspots, the sun was giving out less energy, which made the earth colder. Volcanic eruption (火山爆发) was probably another natural cause. During the Little Ice Age, many volcanoes erupted. Their dust (灰尘) might stop the sun’s light and heat from reaching the earth.
Today we are seeing the influences of rising temperature. Scientists think people are causing this change by burning a lot of coal and oil. So we need to change our way of living.
8. How does the writer start the topic?
A. By asking a question.
B. By giving an example.
C. By making a comparison.
9. Why did people collect much wood during the Little Ice Age?
A. To keep their house warm.
B. To stop the spread of illness.
C. To protect them from the hard ice.
10. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. Volcanic dust could make the earth warmer.
B. Fewer sunspots meant less heat from the sun.
C. People’s daily life caused a 400-year cold period.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. The secret of sunspots
B. The terrible volcanic eruption
C. The Little Ice age and climate change
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. B 11. C

A. Volcanic dust could make the earth warmer.
B. Fewer sunspots meant less heat from the sun.
C. People’s daily life caused a 400-year cold period.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. The secret of sunspots

C. The Little Ice age and climate change
