While getting into Harvard Law School is never easy for anyone, Rehan, whose single-parent family was poor, made it by himself.
Rehan lived through years of family struggles, poverty, and unfairness. He saw his father do several jobs to raise his brother and him with little rest and food. Rehan admitted he was pained and “hungry for more”. Life taught him the value of hard work and self-improvement at a very young age.
Those hard times tested the family as a whole. The more stressed Rehan was, the worse his grades became. His father told him to learn to relax by exercising. With a different purpose, he channeled his energy into sports, which he hoped would become his way out of a poor life.
However, things didn’t go that way. His father was in bad physical condition and then Rehan had to take a job at Bates Trucking & Trash Removal. He was smart and worked harder than any others. His co-workers spoke highly of him and tried to persuade him to go back to school. One of the company owners even helped him enroll (注册) at Bowie State University. Rehan earned a 4. 0 grade point average and was able to transfer to the University of Maryland. But Rehan’s struggles still weren’t over. During his junior year at the University of Maryland, his father suffered a stroke (中风). Instead of dropping out of school, Rehan returned to Bates Trucking & Trash Removal in order to save his father. He got up each day at 3 am to work before class and doubled his learning plans. Finally, he graduated with good grades. Moreover, he began applying to Harvard Law School and made it.
With a sick father, a younger brother, a hard job, and a little time to learn, Rehan just had his own painful story to stand on. “Yes, Rehan has a quick mind, but what makes his achievement even more admirable is his courageous journey to this moment,” said his professor.
24. What does the author mean by saying “hungry for more” in Paragraph 2?
A. Rehan was pained due to the lack of food.
B. Rehan wanted to get along well with his father.
C. Sufferings made Rehan more determined to fight.
D. Unlucky experience taught Rehan to take things easy.
25. Why did Rehan go into sports?
A. He wished to change his life. B. He found his talent for sports.
C. He wanted to improve his mood. D. He tried to develop new hobbies.
26. What happened after Rehan went to work?
A. His father’s health gradually improved. B. He was refused by Bowie State University.
C. He could continue his study with others’ help. D. His co-workers found the job difficult for him.
27. Which of the following can best describe Rehan’s days in college?
A. Colourful but busy. B. Fresh and relaxing.
C. Adventurous and funny. D. Challenging but rewarding.
C 25. A 26. C 27. D

根据第二段“Rehan lived through years of family struggles, poverty, and unfairness. He saw his father do several jobs to raise his brother and him with little rest and food. Rehan admitted he was pained and “hungry for more”. Life taught him the value of hard work and self-improvement at a very young age.( Rehan经历了多年的家庭斗争、贫困和不公平。他看到他的父亲做几份工作来抚养他和他的兄弟,几乎没有休息和食物。Rehan承认他很痛苦,“渴望得到更多”。在他很小的时候,生活就教会了他努力工作和自我完善的价值)”可知,Rehan经历了家庭的挣扎、贫困和不公,生活的苦难让他意识到努力工作和自我提升的价值,所以“hungry for more”意思是苦难让他更有决心去奋斗。故选C项。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“His father told him to learn to relax by exercising. With a different purpose, he channeled his energy into sports, which he hoped would become his way out of a poor life.( 他父亲告诉他要学会通过锻炼来放松。带着不同的目的,他把自己的精力投入到体育运动中,他希望这能成为他摆脱贫困生活的途径)”可知,Rehan从事体育运动是希望这能成为他摆脱贫困生活的途径,即他希望通过运动改变自己的人生。故选A项。
根据第四段中“His co-workers spoke highly of him and tried to persuade him to go back to school. One of the company owners even helped him enroll (注册) at Bowie State University. 【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“During his junior year at the University of Maryland, his father suffered a stroke (中风) . Instead of dropping out of school, Rehan returned to Bates Trucking & Trash Removal in order to save his father. He got up each day at 3 am to work before class and doubled his learning plans. Finally, he graduated with good grades. Many children try to make their parents proud. But in some families, a child’s success is always “on show”. Parents want praise from others, and the child may feel like a performer, not a person.
The term “peacock parenting” comes from the idea of being “as proud as a peacock”. Here it means a self-centered style of parenting. A peacock parent may show off a “perfect family” in public, yet criticise the child behind closed doors when the child fails to meet high expectations. Over time, the child may learn that love is conditional. They may hide their real feelings, stop exploring their own interests, and start to believe, “I am not worthy.”
Experts describe three common signs. The first is psychological control. When the child sets a boundary or feels upset, the parent may say, “You’re too sensitive,” and turn the blame back onto the child. This often creates a sense of guilt. The second is unpredictable mood swings. The parent can be warm one day and cold the next, making the child feel like they are “walking on eggshells”. In adulthood, this may lead to people-pleasing and weak boundaries. The third is role reversal. Some parents fail to provide proper care and attention, or even expect their child to look after them emotionally or physically. As a result, the child may grow up too fast and miss out on a normal childhood.
Healing takes time, but it is possible. The first step is to be kinder to yourself and reconnect with your own interests. Supportive friends, groups, or professional help can provide the care that was previously missing. Clear boundaries can also make a relationship safer, and if contact continues to cause harm, limiting contact may be necessary. After all, there are many places to find warmth, and not all of them are under a parent’s roof.
28. What is the purpose of paragraph 1?
A. To raise an issue. B. To describe a study.
C. To explain the causes. D. To offer the solutions.
29. What does “peacock parenting” in paragraph 2 mainly focus on?
A. Public approval. B. Unconditional love. C. Independent growth. D. Honest self-expression.
30. Which sign best matches “role reversal” in paragraph 3?
A. The parent praises the child in public. B. The child tries to win others’ approval.
C. The parent relies on the child for support. D. The child avoids setting any boundaries.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Distance ensures safety. B. Self-care is the final step.
C. healing requires parental effort. D. Support exists beyond the family.
A 29. A 30. C 31. D

Scientists from the University of Otago’s Christchurch Medical School have discovered a direct connection between people’s vitamin C intake and their skin’s ability to produce collagen (胶原蛋白)and renew itself. The study, published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, clearly shows that skin health is influenced by vitamin C from daily food, not just by topical (外用的)creams applied to the skin surface. It also found that vitamin C levels in the skin are closely related to those in the blood. Therefore, eating more foods rich in vitamin C can effectively increase vitamin C levels in both the blood and the skin.
The research included 24 healthy adults from New Zealand and Germany. Those eating two SunGold kiwifruits daily raised blood vitamin C levels and saw a clear increase in skin vitamin C. This made skin thicker — due to more collagen — and sped up outer skin renewal. Lead researcher Professor Margreet Vissers described the results as surprising and said the strong connection between skin thickness and vitamin C intake is fully believable.
She noted the connection between blood and skin vitamin C is clearer than in other organs. “We were surprised by how closely blood vitamin C levels are connected to those in the skin,” she said. The research team also discovered that vitamin C in the blood can reach all layers of the skin and help the skin work better. Though vitamin C is often added to skincare products, it is not well taken in through the outer skin. However, skin cells can take in vitamin C from the blood very well.
SunGold kiwifruits were chosen for the study because they always have a high vitamin C content. But the researchers believe other foods rich in vitamin C, such as oranges and berries, can bring similar benefits to the skin. It is important to keep steady vitamin C levels in the blood because the human body does not store vitamin C for a long time. Professor Vissers suggested that healthy people can reach the best blood vitamin C levels with about 250mg of vitamin C every day through their diet.
32. What affects skin health according to the study?
A. Water taken in by the skin. B. Vitamin C from food intake.
C. Collagen from skin products. D. Topical skincare creams alone.
33. What is Professor Vissers’ attitude towards the study results?
A. Doubtful. B. Approving. C. Unconcerned. D. Objective.
34. Why are vitamin C-rich skincare products less effective?
A. They lack enough collagen.
B. They are not used in a proper way.
C. They don’t suit all skin types.
D. They are poorly taken in through skin.
35. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Vitamin C Intake and Skin Health
B. Blood Vitamin C and Skin Vitamin C
C. Skincare Products and Vitamin C Intake
D. Collagen Production and Skin Thickness
B 33. B 34. D 35. A

First and foremost, beginning again builds your resilience (韧性). When you’re a beginner, you make lots of mistakes. ____37____ This can be frustrating, but each time you rise, retry, and advance slightly, you build resilience to meet challenges.
____38____ As an adult, you might get used to being the “expert” or the one who knows the answers. But stepping into a beginner’s role can change this situation. This process of trying, failing, and trying again from different angles stimulates your brain, enhancing your problem-solving skills. ____39____
Finally, remember the feeling when you first successfully understood a complex idea in a new language? ____40____ It boosts your confidence and reminds you of your own potential.
So the next time you feel a little uncomfortable about being a beginner, remember that it’s not a sign of weakness, but an opportunity for growth. Embrace the awkwardness of being a beginner. You might discover a brand new version of yourself.
A. In doing so, it teaches you to think outside the box.
B. You might hit the wrong notes, or trip over your own feet.
C. Yet, what if this very discomfort holds hidden advantages?
D. You have to ask questions, listen to others, and accept help.

根据前文“Most of us avoid being beginners. It can feel uncomfortable and embarrassing — we naturally prefer to feel capable and in control. (我们大多数人都避免成为初学者。这可能会让人感到不适和尴尬——我们天生更喜欢感到自己有能力且能掌控一切。)”可知,本段先描述了人们通常对成为初学者的消极感受。接着后文“By choosing to start something new, you open yourself up to a world of unexpected benefits. (通过选择尝试新事物,你会迎来一个充满意想不到好处的世界。)”则转而指出开始尝试新事物可能带来好处。因此,中间的空处应起到转折的作用,引出下文的积极论述。C选项“然而,如果这种不适感本身就隐藏着优势呢?”与前文的消极感受形成转折,并引出后文说它可能带来益处,符合语境。故选C。
【37题详解】
前文“When you’re a beginner, you make lots of mistakes. (当你是个初学者时,你会犯很多错误。)”提到了初学者会犯错误。后文“This can be frustrating, but each time you rise, retry, and advance slightly, you build resilience to meet challenges.
前文“This process of trying, failing, and trying again from different angles stimulates your brain, enhancing your problem-solving skills. (这个尝试、失败、再从不同角度尝试的过程会刺激你的大脑,提升你的问题解决能力。)”说明初学者在学习过程中能激发创造力和提高技能。A选项“这样做,它教会你跳出固有思维模式。”中的“这样做(In doing so)”指代前文描述的“This process of trying, failing, and trying again from different angles”这个过程,“跳出固有思维模式”正是对前文“从不同角度尝试”所达成的效果的总结,与前文衔接自然。故选A。
前文“Finally, remember the feeling when you first successfully understood a complex idea in a new language?

The first frost of November painted Mrs. Henderson’s rose bushes silver, but her mood was anything but cheerful. For three days, her morning newspaper Riverdale Gazette had disappeared from its usual spot by the front door. Each morning, she’d glance through her lace curtains at precisely 6:45 a.m., only to find the empty driveway where the newspapers should have been. Her suspicion, like the frost, grew steadily colder and it settled firmly on her new next-door neighbors, the Carters.
The Carters moved in two months ago — a young couple with twin boys. To Mrs. Henderson’s ordered mind, their home was a symphony of cheerful chaos: brightly colored plastic toys spreading across the yard, a tricycle lying on its side by the walkway, and the constant energetic screams of children at play. Newspapers were clearly part of their household mess.
The final straw came on Thursday. Not only was her paper gone, but a beautiful, prize-worthy rose from her front garden bed had been taken clean off. Mrs. Henderson, a champion gardener for twenty years, felt a hot wave of anger. This was no accident: this was damage on purpose! She pictured a small hand reaching through the fence. Enough was enough.
With purpose, she marched next door and rang the bell of the Carters, thinking she should give the boys a lesson.
Mr. Carter answered, looking pleasantly surprised but slightly confused, with a child holding onto each leg and a naughty dog circling his feet. “Mrs, Henderson! What a lovely surprise!” Before she could launch into her prepared speech about community respect and property, her eyes slid past him into the hallway. There, neatly stood on a small table beside an umbrella stand, were three copies of Riverdale Gazette.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

Following her eyes, Mr. Carter’s expression turned to understanding and mild embarrassment. “Oh, dear,” he said, scratching his head. “Those are your newspapers. Our naughty dog keeps picking them up before I can stop him.” It seemed that the naughty dog took it as a praise, wagging its tail and circling happily around them. Mr. Carter bent down, picked up one of the papers and went on, “I meant to return them and apologize. Mornings here are always a bit crazy.” Then Mrs. Henderson even pictured the dog biting off her rose running around.
Realizing she was wrong about the boys, Mrs. Henderson’s prepared words were gone. For a moment, embarrassment rooted her to the spot, with her face burning hot. A wave of guilt washed over her as she looked at the shy boys she had blamed. “I... I thought it was the...” her voice much softer than before. Mrs. Henderson then turned to the twins and invited them to see her garden someday. The boys’ eyes lit up at once. As she walked back home with the papers, it dawned on her that suspicion, like frost, could chill the heart, but kindness had the power to melt it away.

C
