Jesse Barber, a documentary photographer and lifelong resident of Western North Carolina, brings a deeply personal camera to cover the destruction of Hurricane Helene. As a graduate of Appalachian State University in Documentary and Appalachian Studies, Barber focuses on capturing rural life in his beloved mountains. However, Helene presented an unexpected challenge.
“The photos of destruction are endless, and are going to continue to be endless,” he said. Barber drove over 1,000 miles in the region over three days last week, to Brevard and beyond, finding the shots, talking with rescue workers and residents. But as a local, Barber brought a different focus than many journalists and photographers covering the storm's destruction and the beginnings of recovery. “I started to feel the outsider in me becomes the insider,” he says.
His copious knowledge of the conditions in the area proved crucial. When an editor suggested staying in an Asheville hotel, Barber knew it was impossible. Leaving his own flooding basement, he found no gas or food, realizing the situation was far worse than editors understood. At a Marion gas station, he photographed a man whose house was half-destroyed, a pure introduction to the degree of personal loss.
Barber’s approach prioritized connection over quick disaster shots. “I’m trying to experience and listen,” he says, valuing the sense of place and people. While documenting shocking geological changes, he also sought resilience and hope among the disaster. He met tired and hungry residents maintaining positive attitudes, like a Bat Cave-born volunteer firefighter in Chimney Rock who insisted, “We’ll be all right... Things will be a little different but we'll still be here.“
As national attention shifts, Barber will remain focused on Appalachia. His rapid response during Helene “confirmed my investment in staying rooted in place,” he says, ensuring his choice to live in Morganton over larger art centres. “I do feel like my work and my instruction are worthwhile. I just want to do my people good.”
4. What prepared Barber to cover Hurricane Helene?
A. His studies in big cities
B. Work with national media.
C. Special disaster training.
D. His local life experience.
5. What does the underlined word “copious” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Enormous.
B. Valuable.
C. Advanced.
D. Further.
6. What makes Barber’s photos different from others?
A. Centering on destruction.
B. Ignoring people’s suffering.
C. Focusing on people’s spirits.
D. Avoiding geological change.
7. What does Barber’s story show?
A. Disaster shots define impact.
B. Social responsibilities matter.
C. Big cities offer better growth.
D. Teamwork is crucial in media.

From an airplane, cars moving slowly on the highway closely resemble a line of ants. Unlike these human-driven vehicles, however, ants are able to avoid the frustrating stop-and-go traffic that bothers daily commutes. Researchers have therefore turned their attention to studying the ants’ teamwork-based behaviors, hoping to apply these insights to programming self-driving cars that can prevent traffic jams.
As the number of cars on highways keeps growing, the stability of traffic flow gradually decreases. Studies show that when the density reaches 15 vehicles per mile per lane, a single driver’s sudden brake tap can give rise to long-lasting and widespread traffic jams. Scientist Katsuhiro Nishinari, a mathematical physicist studying traffic transitions, compares this phenomenon to a phase transition, such as water turning into ice. Even small individual actions in such situations can quickly develop into major traffic issues.
Katsuhiro Nishinari’s previous research has already shown that food-seeking ants can maintain smooth movement even when their population density is very high. A recent follow-up study has uncovered they usually travel in groups of 3 to 20 individuals, moving at steady speeds with proper gaps between each other and never attempting to overtake. Their behavior depends on mutual collaboration rather than individual preferences.
This collective intelligence offers a lesson for human drivers today. One key takeaway is to avoid tailgating. Keeping a safe distance from the vehicle ahead helps absorb the shock waves caused by sudden braking in dense traffic — a simple practice that prioritizes the smooth flow of the whole over individual hurry. Of course, ants have the natural advantage of creating flexible paths, while cars are bound to fixed lanes. But the principle of maintaining proper spacing remains crucial for safety and efficiency on our roads.
Looking ahead, the real transformation may come from technology. As Katsuhiro Nishinari points out, “Unlike human drivers who often act independently, future self-driving cars could be designed to share real-time data and function as an integrated system.” Inspired by ants, these vehicles can upgrade traffic flow as a cooperative system, potentially requiring updates to existing regulations to fully realize their benefits.
8. What can cause widespread highway traffic jams directly?
A. A total of 15 cars per mile.
B. Ant behaviors affecting driving.
C. Reduced stability of traffic flow.
D. A sudden brake at a certain density.
9. What is the purpose of mentioning the recent follow-up study in paragraph 3?
A. To explain how intelligent ants are.
B. To reveal how ants cooperate to seek food.
C. To detail how ants achieve smooth movement.
D. To compare how ants move with human drivers
10. What does the underlined word “tailgating” probably mean in paragraph 4?
A. Keeping a proper distance.
B. Driving too close to the front.
C. Following strict traffic rules.
D. Seeking efficient lane position.
11. What is Katsuhiro Nishinari’s suggestion for ant-inspired self-driving cars?
A. Collect personal travel data.
B. Adopt a collaborative approach.
C. Redesign traffic rules constantly.
D. Rely on upgrading road systems.

MIT scientists have created a kind of high-tech “wrap” capable of collecting safe drinking water directly from the air even in extreme environments.
The water harvester is made from hydrogel (水凝胶) that is wrapped between two layers of glass. At night, the device absorbs water vapor (蒸气) from the atmosphere. During the day, the vapor becomes water on the glass thanks to a coating that keeps the glass cool. The liquid water then flows down the glass and is collected in a system of tubes. The hydrogel comes in a special shape — a series of round roofs with a circular base, which are like a sheet of wrap that expands when absorbing water vapor. The shape increases the material’s surface area, which increases the amount of vapor it can hold. This process requires no electricity, enhancing its sustainability and suitability.
Scientists tested the new device for a week in Death Valley, the hottest and driest place in North America. It could even generate about 1/4 to 2/3 of a cup of water(57 ml-161.5ml) every day. In other areas, the device should generate more. One challenge with the hydrogel had been the leakage of harmful salts into the collected water, but the team overcame this by using a salt stabilizer, reducing harmful salt leakage to concentrations well below safety limits for ground water.
While one panel might not produce enough water to sustain an entire household, it doesn’t take up much space, which means multiple panels could be set up for a single household. The scientists estimate that eight panels could be enough to supply a household in places where there isn’t easy access to safe drinking water. Compared to the costs of bottled water, the device could pay for itself in less than a month and last at least one year.
The new water harvester is a major step towards providing safe, accessible drinking water for people across the globe, and works wherever you may find water vapor in the air. The team plans to test the panels in more resource-limited environments to learn more about the device’s performance under different conditions.
12. What determines the amount of the hydrogel’s water harvest?
A. The quality of the cool coating.
B. The number of the glass layers.
C. The specially designed structure.
D. The vapor-absorbing frequency.
13. What advantage of the device is stressed in paragraph 3?
A. It is sustainable. B. It is high-tech.
C. It is productive. D. It is heat-resistant.
14. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The device’s potential for home use.
B. The device’s low cost for households.
C. The panel’s suitability for tiny spaces.
D. The panel’s capacity for water supply.
15. What is the team’s next focus concerning the device?
A. Doing global tests on it.
B. Exploring its adaptability.
C. Enhancing its effectiveness.
D. Introducing it to other fields.

One day, I was sitting at the breakfast table with my five-year-old son, Mateo. I was still recovering from an operation. “Mom, let’s play,” Mateo looked at me and said. Trying hard to ignore the pain in my stomach, I shook my head and replied, “Not today, sweetie.” These days, getting out of bed was a real struggle for me. I longed for strength and happiness, yet the future seemed so hopeless.
All of a sudden, Mateo jumped up from where he was sitting on the kitchen floor. He shouted, “Bird!” and then ran towards our courtyard. I looked in the direction he was looking and, sure enough, there was a white dove (鸽子) landing in a rubber tree. It stayed there for a little while and then flew away. It was quite odd because I’d never seen a white dove in our neighborhood before.
The next morning, I dragged myself into the kitchen. To my surprise, the dove was back, and this time it had a mate carrying some sticks. I pointed to the tree and said to Mateo, “Look, they’re going to build a nest.” Throughout the week, the doves flew in and out of the courtyard, building their nest on top of the rubber tree.
Mateo was extremely excited. Every morning, he would rush into the kitchen and stand by the sliding glass door. He would talk to the birds as they worked. His joy was influential. Although feeling sad, I couldn’t help but look forward to the doves’ visits.
However, things took a turn for the worse. The courtyard seemed like a safe place for a nest, but the rubber tree’s small branches were not stable at all. One night, a strong wind blew, and the doves’ nest was blown to the ground. I heard the small branches break.
I checked the damage. Nothing good ever lasts. I wouldn’t blame the doves if they never came back. But they returned. They didn’t even look at the pile of sticks that used to be their nest. They started building all over again. Unfortunately, the wind destroyed their work again. But day after day, they kept starting again as if nothing had occurred.

【答案】8. D 9. C 10. B 11. B

【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Katsuhiro Nishinari’s previous research has already shown that food-seeking ants can maintain smooth movement even when their population density is very high. A recent follow-up study has uncovered they usually travel in groups of 3 to 20 individuals, moving at steady speeds with proper gaps between each other and never attempting to overtake.(Katsuhiro Nishinar之前的研究已经表明,寻找食物的蚂蚁即使在种群密度很高的情况下也能保持平稳移动。最近的一项后续研究发现,它们通常以3到20只为一组行进,以稳定的速度移动,彼此之间保持适当的距离,从不试图超车)”可知,提到这项后续研究是为了详细说明蚂蚁如何实现平稳移动。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中的“One key takeaway is to avoid tailgating. Keeping a safe distance from the vehicle ahead helps absorb the shock waves caused by sudden braking in dense traffic — a simple practice that prioritizes the smooth flow of the whole over individual hurry.(一个关键的收获是避免tailgating。与前车保持安全距离有助于吸收交通拥堵时突然刹车造成的冲击波——这是一种将整体顺畅流动置于个人匆忙之上的简单做法)”可知,tailgating与后文“Keeping a safe distance from the vehicle ahead(与前车保持安全距离)”意思相反,指开车离前车太近。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“As Katsuhiro Nishinari points out, “Unlike human drivers who often act independently, future self-driving cars could be designed to share real-time data and function as an integrated system.”(正如Katsuhiro Nishinari所指出的:“与经常独立行动的人类司机不同,未来的自动驾驶汽车可以设计成共享实时数据,并作为一个集成系统发挥作用。”)”可知,Katsuhiro Nishinari建议受蚂蚁启发的自动驾驶汽车采用协作模式。

【答案】范文:
The Beauty of Labor
From what Gorky said, I believe labor is the source of all beauty and value. It is through hard work that we create warmth, hope and progress that push our life forward continuously.
Last month, I helped my parents clean the garden and grow vegetables. Tired as I was, I felt proud when seeing fresh plants and tidy grounds. When my family enjoyed the crisp vegetables we grew ourselves at dinner, the sweet sense of achievement filled my heart. Labor not only shapes the world but also teaches us responsibility and gratitude. Every effort matters, and every worker is glorious.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“Look! The birds have returned!” Mateo shouted.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】示例:
I realized that I should take some measures. Having given me comfort in my darkest times, the doves deserved my help in return. I searched around the house carefully, found some pieces of wood and made a solid wooden nest for them. With a lot of effort and care, I managed to climb up a ladder, attached the nest to the rubber tree and covered it with some leaves. It was a challenging job, but the doves’ determination gave me the confidence and strength. After finishing the work, Mateo and I stood by the sliding glass door, waiting and watching with patience.
“Look! The birds have returned!” Mateo shouted. Hearing my son’s excited voice, clear as a bell, I looked up. The doves were circling near the nest happily and seemed to be satisfied with the new home. They started to bring small branches and soft feathers right away. Several weeks later, four babies came out of the eggs. The young birds developed day by day, and around a month later, they were fully grown and could fly. As watching them fly high and hearing them sing, I felt more positive and hopeful. The doves taught me to face difficulties bravely and keep moving forward.
