That’s how the first hand warmer was created. Warmers became very popular in the Song Dynasty. Making them was very common during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Many poems and books talked about people using them. They were mentioned in the famous book The Dream of the Red Chamber. The classic book was written by Cao Xueqin during the Qing Dynasty. In the book, a maid gives a hand warmer to Lin Daiyu. There was a famous maker of hand warmers in the Ming Dynasty. His name was Zhang Mingqi. The hand warmers he made were called “Zhanglu”. The warmers were made of bronze (青铜) or ceramics (陶瓷). They came in many shapes. Some were round or square. Others looked like pumpkins, flowers, or turtle shells (龟壳). They could fit in people’s hands or be placed in the sleeves for heating. People put burning charcoal (炭火) inside the warmer to produce heat. They became the first humans to not only cook chicken and beef in outer space but also eat them. In a short video from the Tiangong space station, Shenzhou XXI spaceship engineer Wu Fei takes chicken wings (鸡翅) out of a package, puts the wings on a holder and places them into a special oven. After 28 minutes, Wu takes out the chicken wings and says they smell just as good as they look. Liu Weibo, an engineer at the Astronaut Centre of China, explained that the researchers designed this special oven so that astronauts can cook in space. “Wherever we Chinese are, we love our food hot,” he said. “With this oven, our astronauts can make cakes and cook meat. It will give them more choices for meals and improve their quality of life in space.” However, it’s not easy to create an oven that cooks in space. On Earth, the air inside an oven can move around, which helps cook the food. This process is called convection (对流), and it’s necessary for cooking. But in space, convection doesn’t happen naturally. After a lot of work, the scientists found a unique way to heat the food and deal with the cooking smoke, while also making sure the astronauts are safe at the space station. Liu also said, “The Chinese-made oven is the world’s first oven that can be used for cooking in space.” 9. Why did researchers design the special oven? A. To stop convection in space. B. To change the way people cook on Earth. C. To cook only chicken wings. D. To improve astronauts’ life in space. 10. Why is it difficult to design an oven for space? A. Convection cannot form naturally in space. B. Astronauts don’t like hot food in space. C. There is no air at all in the space station. D. It is too expensive to make such an oven. 11. What does the underlined word “unique” mean in the last paragraph? A. common B. traditional C. special D. natural 12. What is the main idea of the passage? A. The first Chinese-made cooking oven used in space. B. The history of China’s space station development. C. Different kinds of food astronauts eat every day. D. How astronauts live a busy life in space. 【答案】9. D 10. A 11. C 12. A 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了中国为宇航员研发的太空专用烤箱,讲述了其研发背景、功能特点及技术难点。 【9题详解】 由第三段最后一句话“It will give them more choices for meals and improve their quality of life in space.”可知,研究人员设计这种特殊烤箱是为了改善宇航员在太空中的生活。 【10题详解】 由第四段第二、三、四句话“On Earth, the air inside an oven can move around, which helps cook the food. His class teacher Mr. Yao saw everything and he came up to Zhao Xiang and comforted him, “Please remember, Zhao Xiang, singing a chorus is NOT one person’s job. Everyone has to work together to achieve a good result.” Zhao Xiang realized that his voice would not help if he failed to work well with others. So he changed his way of singing—he did not sing so loud as he used to, and his voice became more mixed with the others’. He also helped his classmates learn how to breathe, how to control their voices and sing gracefully (优雅地). At last, the Big Day came. The whole class was on the stage. They tried their best and they made it! When the headmaster read out their first prize, everyone jumped up and shouted with joy. According to a story, Emperor Yangdi of the Sui Dynasty visited Jiangsu in winter. It was very cold. A local official asked people to make a small warmer for the emperor to hold. They could fit in people’s hands or be placed in the sleeves for heating. People put burning charcoal (炭火) inside the warmer to produce heat. They sometimes mixed the charcoal with spices (香料) and pressed it into flower shapes. This made the air smell nice when it burned. 5. How was the first hand warmer said to be created? A. D Huang Ying, a student at Sichuan University who uses a wheelchair, became popular because of her exercise video.
