I remember one Saturday morning, I was about 11 years old. After breakfast, I asked Granny, “What kind of soup are you making today?” “Vegetable beef,” she answered. “And you can help by cutting some carrots.” When I slowly cut the carrots, I said, “I’ve got to give a report next week and I’m scared. I don’t like standing in front of everybody. What if I forget what I’m going to say? Or what if somebody laughs?” “And what if you do just fine?” Granny asked. “Have you prepared notes?” “Well, no. That would be a lot of work.” “Hard work never hurts anyone,” Granny said. “You could try practicing in front of a mirror. It’s easy to find how well you are practicing.”
I pushed the pieces of carrots to the side of the cutting board and went on to complain about (抱怨) schoolwork, friends and family. Granny took it all in, listening quietly while I was talking about so many pieces of grief (悲伤) in my life.
“Tracy,” she said, “there’s nothing wrong with a little trouble in your life. Well, you know, a lot of people don’t make homemade soup these days. They say it’s too much trouble. But I don’t mind such a little trouble. It adds flavor (味道) to my soup and to my life. My soup would be pretty bland (平淡无味的) without the vegetables, and so would my life if it didn’t have the little ups and downs.” She smiled and then started washing the dishes.
While I helped Granny clean up, I thought about what she had said. Maybe I could turn a little trouble into something as special as Granny’s homemade soup. I would have to work on them. Granny had said hard work paid off.

There are thousands of kinds of animals in the Amazon rainforest, each coloured differently. Most rainforest animals use their colours for survival.
Some animals use colour to protect themselves from their predators (猎食者). An example is the green iguana (鬣鳞蜥). Young iguanas are bright green and hide among the bright green leaves of the trees where they live. As they grow older, their colour becomes duller. Old iguanas live higher in the trees, where the colours all around are less bright.
Other animals are predators and use colours to hide from their prey. The boa constrictor snake (蟒蛇) is a good example. Some boas are grey or brown, and their colours help them hide on branches. The emerald boa is green and white, so it can easily hide in the leaves. A boa hides in a tree and waits for a bird to fly by. When one does, the boa grabs the bird from the air and then squeezes it to death before eating it.
Colourful frogs can be orange, red, or green. Their bright colours let everybody know where they are. The bright colour warns other animals that the frog is poisonous, so they stay away. These tiny frogs are very poisonous! One frog has enough poison to kill 100 people.
The colours of the rainforest are beautiful to us, but to the animals they are very important. They help the animals survive.

One day, while studying in a quiet cave (洞), Fan Zhongyan suddenly heard a strange noise. Two mice, one white and one golden (金色的), found their way into his cooking pot. Fan Zhongynn guided the unexpected visitors out carefully, following them to a bushy (灌木茂密的) area near the cave.
Fan Zhongyan found two little holes under the bush. One hole glowed golden, and the other shone silver (银色的). Surprised by this, he started digging around the golden glow.

Besides that, he revealed (揭示) the treasure to the abbot through a poem. The monks (僧侣) succeeded in finding the hidden gold and silver by solving the riddle in the poem (诗).

13. In which part of a magazine may we read this?
A. History. B. Culture. C. Arts. D. Nature.
14. What colour is the adult green iguana?
A. Bright green. B. Dull green. C. Grey or brown. D. Green and white.
15. Which animal in the passage is an example of “prey”?
A. Some boas. B. The emerald boa. C. The bird. D. Colourful frogs.
16. How is the passage organized? (P: Paragraph)
A. B. C. D.

In Shanghai, a new type of intelligent nursing home has opened its doors. It is trying to solve some problems caused by an aging society. One of the most special things here is the use of emotional companion robots (情感陪伴机器人).
These robots are of great help to the elderly. With advanced AI technology (先进的人工智能技术), they can recognize various human emotions. When an old person is feeling lonely, the robot can notice the change and start a friendly conversation. It can also repeat the old stories the old man loves to recall (回忆), or play his favorite music. This not only helps the elderly feel less lonely but also improves their mental health.
The robots can also help solve the shortage of nursing staff (护理人员). In the past, nursing homes often faced difficulties because there were not enough workers to take care of all the elderly. But now, these robots can complete some simple tasks. They can remind the elderly to take their medicine on time, for example.
