① The abacus, known as the world's first calculator, was invented in China over 2,500 years ago. It is made of a wooden frame with beads that slide on rods. People used it to add, subtract, multiply and divide quickly.
② In the beginning, people counted using small stones or sticks. But these were not easy to carry or store. Ancient Chinese mathematicians wanted a tool that was both portable and efficient.
③ It is said that a famous mathematician named Xu Yue improved the abacus during the Eastern Han Dynasty. He watched traders counting coins and goods every day. They often made mistakes when using stones. Xu thought, “What if I use beads on strings? They can slide easily and show different numbers.”
④ After many tries, Xu made the first abacus with beads on wooden rods inside a frame. Each bead stood for a number, and by moving the beads, people could do math faster. However, the beads were sometimes too smooth and slid too fast, causing errors.
⑤ Xu did not give up. He made the beads rougher so that they stayed in place better. Years later, his invention became popular among merchants, bankers, and even in schools.
⑥ Today, the abacus is still taught in many Chinese schools. It helps children improve their mental math skills. Learning the abacus also helps them understand Chinese history and the wisdom of ancient people.
26. Why did Xu Yue want to improve the counting tool?
A. Because the king ordered him to do so. B. Because he wanted to become famous.
C. Because stones were not easy to use correctly. D. Because he had too many beads at home.
27. How can students better understand Chinese wisdom according to the passage?
A. By inventing new calculators. B. By learning to use the abacus.
C. By watching traders count coins. D. By making wooden frames.
28. What lesson can we learn from Xu Yue’s story?
A. Learn from traders. B. Keep trying and never give up.
C. Value modern technology. D. Think twice before acting.

“Is the old castle really haunted?” asked Amy, as Uncle Ben drove the car.
“Not haunted,” replied Uncle Ben. “But it has a long history. A brave knight once lived there. He was kind, but he had a strange habit: he collected old keys.”
They drove through a dark forest. Soon they saw Raven Castle. It stood on a hill with tall towers and a stone bridge.
“There it is,” said Uncle Ben. “The knight was very wealthy, you know.” They found an old man in the garden. He was polishing a large iron key.
“Welcome!” the old man cried. “I’m the caretaker. You can help me — it’s very important.”
“Do you need help cleaning the tower?” asked Amy.
“The tower? Oh, no!” said the old man. “The tower is closed. I have something new to show you. Come and see.”
Amy and Uncle Ben followed the old man to the back of the castle. There they saw the new thing — it was a sky garden built on the roof. It was full of flowers and small trees, with blue benches and a wooden swing.
“Look, look!” cried the old man. Amy was very excited. She climbed the spiral stairs with the old man. The garden was not very big, but it was beautiful. There were three small fountains. There was a little telescope, some bird feeders and a stone table.
“It’s perfect!” said the old man. He opened a small wooden box. “Look,” he said, “old keys, maps, and a diary. They are ready for our treasure hunt this afternoon.”
“What?” said Uncle Ben. “Our treasure hunt and this afternoon?”
“Now, Uncle Ben,” said the old man, “please, please come with me! We can explore the whole castle — together!”
“No,” said Uncle Ben. “I don’t want to explore. I want to rest by the car. And Amy wants to rest too. Don’t you, Amy?”
“Err... Yes, of course,” said Amy, sadly. She looked at the beautiful sky garden. Then she looked at the old man.

Chinese shadow puppetry (皮影戏) is an old folk art. You can still see it in some villages today. It has a long history of more than 2,000 years. Let's learn something about it.
Interesting Stories
Shadow puppetry tells many interesting stories. People believe it can bring good luck. At festivals, performers put on shows to celebrate harvest. At birthdays, they tell stories of long life.
The Making of Shadow Puppets
There are two main ways to make shadow puppets: cutting from leather or painting on paper. It is easy to learn the basic steps, but to become a master puppeteer takes years of practice. The tools needed are simple: a knife, scissors, and colorful materials.
Unique Style in Shanxi
In Xiaoyi, Shanxi Province, the shadow puppets are different. The puppets are very small and brightly colored. Female performers like to sing local songs while moving the puppets. As the song finishes, the story scene also ends.
Now, shadow puppetry is taught in some schools. Students can learn to make puppets and perform short plays. Li Na, a middle school student, says, “It’s amazing to bring paper characters to life. We all love it.”

Our school is holding an activity called “Traditional Culture on Campus”. I learned to make zongzi. At first, my grandma taught me how to wash the leaves and mix the rice. It was hard to fold the leaves into a nice shape. I tried many times. Sometimes the rice fell out. But I didn’t give up. Finally, I made a beautiful zongzi. I felt so proud. Through this experience, I learned that traditional food carries family love and culture. I will keep practicing and pass on this skill.
