AI chatbots (聊天机器人) might be very smart but a new study found that they’re not good at giving health advice. Some people use AI to find out what is wrong with them and to help them decide when to see a doctor—or even go to hospital. This is a problem if the advice they get isn’t correct.
AI companies have developed chatbots that focus on health problems, and some of them have even passed medical exams. However, the new study shows that they aren’t very useful when a real person asks them for help with their health.
Almost 1,300 people took part in the study. Each was given fake health problems with a list of symptoms (症状) (signs or effects) and asked to use an AI to get a made-up medical history. For example, one healthy person was told to tell the AI that he had a really bad headache.
The people were divided into two groups. One group could ask the AI chatbots to identify (确认) their illness and say whether they should look after themselves at home or see a doctor. The other group could use the internet to find out the same information. Real doctors then checked whether the volunteers had worked out their “illness” and what to do next.
The results of the study are worrying. Only about one third of the volunteers got the right answer from the AI. In fact, the study found that the AI’s advice was no better than just using the Internet.

When Max learned his family was moving, he felt upset.

AI chatbots (聊天机器人) might be very smart but a new study found that they’re not good at giving health advice. Some people use AI to find out what is wrong with them and to help them decide when to see a doctor—or even go to hospital. This is a problem if the advice they get isn’t correct.
AI companies have developed chatbots that focus on health problems, and some of them have even passed medical exams. However, the new study shows that they aren’t very useful when a real person asks them for help with their health.
Almost 1,300 people took part in the study. Each was given fake health problems with a list of symptoms (症状) (signs or effects) and asked to use an AI to get a made-up medical history. For example, one healthy person was told to tell the AI that he had a really bad headache.
The people were divided into two groups. One group could ask the AI chatbots to identify (确认) their illness and say whether they should look after themselves at home or see a doctor. The other group could use the internet to find out the same information. Real doctors then checked whether the volunteers had worked out their “illness” and what to do next.
The results of the study are worrying. Only about one third of the volunteers got the right answer from the AI. In fact, the study found that the AI’s advice was no better than just using the Internet.
“AI can’t be safely depended on to take the place of a medical expert,” said Dr Rebecca Payne, who led the study. She said that asking an AI for health advice can be wrong sometimes. They might give wrong information if someone is unwell or if urgent (紧急的) help is needed, she said.
