My parents were excellent cooks. Growing up, I enjoyed being in the kitchen with them. It was a place where I could relax myself, be creative and have fun. In September of 2020, I started a side business in São Paulo selling bread, sauces and other foods online. At the same time, my husband and I were revisiting our dream of living abroad. Canada seemed like the perfect choice because of its diverse (多样的) food culture.
I chose to study culinary (烹饪的) management at George Brown College, one of Canada’s top culinary schools. I started my two-year program in September 2022. The program included business courses, such as human resources, and marketing, as well as hands-on cooking classes. I learned skills to be a cook, like working with flavors (味道), and how to prepare large amounts of food. Some days, I was on my feet from 7 am to 5 pm, but my heart was filled with happiness. Being in a kitchen invigorated me. I knew that cooking was what I wanted to do.
During my studies, I had some exciting opportunities. I was a finalist in a school cooking competition, where I made salpicao, a traditional Brazilian turkey salad. In April 2024, I entered a cooking competition hosted by Cookin, an app where chefs sell and deliver meals. I created a Brazilian-inspired menu, with dishes from the countryside to the coast, including pulled pork with guava jam and chips. I was one of the winners and got to run an online store, Flavia’s Taste of Brazil, for a week. Using the college’s kitchen, I completed 25 orders, preparing a total of 41 meals.
Going back to college wasn’t just about learning the hard skills of cooking. It gave me courage and confidence to go for my love.

People from all over the world have different wedding traditions and marriage customs. The one thing that all wedding ceremonies commonly seem to have is the commitment (承诺) of love for all time during a public ceremony.
Everyone at a wedding hopes for great happiness between the wedding couple. Wedding traditions are usually a way of showing signs of the hope for great happiness. Some of these traditions are very interesting.
In Sweden, the traditional bride will wear three rings by the end of the wedding ceremony. The first is the engagement (订婚) ring that she entered the ceremony with. The second, the wedding ring, is added to the first. A final ring, however, is added as well. This ring is known as the “motherhood” ring. This is said to show that marriage is about more than just love. It is about building a family.
Wedding traditions in the Philippines, a dance which can last for hours. During the Philippines, guests pin (用大头针别住) money to the bride’s dress to pay for their honeymoon.
A traditional Irish bride may wear a blue wedding dress — believing blue to be a lucky color. English Lavender (薰衣草) is often mixed with her wedding flowers. It is traditional for the bride to braid her hair (梳头发) — as it is considered a good way to bring luck to the new couple.

There is no such thing as a quick Web search. For example, you just want to look up one thing. But before you know it, you are likely to find more than 37 sites, and 45 minutes are likely to be wasted on what should be a 30-second exercise.
We used to waste our spare time in front of the TV. There is an old saying: No one can become successful sitting on the couch watching TV. The same is true of the Internet. And endlessly surfing the Web isn’t going to get your goals done. Nor is it going to magically make you successful. So reduce your endless surfing. But what should you do?
If you really need to get work done without being disturbed, turn off the Internet. Use “airplane mode” on your phone. If you need a better way to do that, there are software apps that will let you block certain websites for a certain amount of time. These apps can block news but still let you do your work, research, etc.
These days, information can be easily found through a click or Web search. But do you really need to know the answer to every bit of trivia (琐事) that pops up in the course of your day? Try not to immediately look everything up on the Internet. One search could end up costing you hours of time.
If you must search the Internet, set a time limit on your Web adventure. You’d better set an actual time. This can prevent you from staying online for too long. Leave the Internet immediately when you’re reminded to do that.
When you are surfing the Web, you may want to keep reading each linked (链接的) article. A great way to stop this is to save “other” articles and read them later. Use an app to save those articles. This allows you to save important information while preventing you from endlessly reading now.
32. The author writes the first two paragraphs to .
A. compare televisions and computers B. show how to find information
C. lead into the topic of the passage D. show the function of TV
33. What are the software apps mentioned in Paragraph 3 used for?
A. Blocking advertisements online. B. Saving some money for you.
C. Providing us with interesting news. D. Limiting our use on certain websites.
34. What does the author suggest doing in Paragraph 5?
A. Staying away from the Internet. B. Not communicating with others online.
C. Not reading other linked articles online. D. Setting a time limit for Web search.
35. In which column of a newspaper can you read the passage?
A. Art and Style. B. Science and Technology.
C. Nature and Geography. D. Sports and Health.

They were talking about the coming Father’s Day. “Belle, do you know when Father’s Day is celebrated?” Fred asked his sister Belle. “Yes, it is going to be celebrated on June 16 this year. Yesterday my friend and I were talking about it,” Belle replied. “Do you have any idea about how we should celebrate this day and make it memorable for Dad?” Fred asked. “Hmm... I was thinking about it too and have some ideas,” Belle answered excitedly.
“What are you kids talking about?” their Mom asked, entering their room. “Mom, we are wondering about how to celebrate Father’s Day,” Belle said. “Oh, I am surprised you kids can remember the day! Well, I am thinking of cooking some favorite dishes for your father. You both should think of ways to decorate the house beautifully,” Mom said.
“That would be great!” said Belle and Fred together. Both of them got up smiling, thinking of hundreds of ways to celebrate Father’s Day. Mom went to the kitchen, and Belle and Fred started doing their homework. But soon Fred noticed Belle deep in thought so he asked what the matter was. “Fred, I am thinking that our parents do everything for us but they demand nothing from us. Isn’t it bad that we never think about them and are always concerned about our needs?” Belle replied. “Sometimes we are so busy with our lives that we don’t pay proper attention to our parents. We should listen to whatever they say properly and answer them. We must also study hard to get good grades,” Fred said.
The next day, all three of them, Belle, Fred and their Mom, got busy preparing their surprise celebration for Father’s Day. Belle drew a family picture with her crayons (蜡笔). 【原文】 W: Welcome to the Roman Baths. My name is Amanda and I’m your guide for today. If you don’t want to carry your coats and bags around with you, there is a coatroom behind the reception. Also, does anyone want to use the bathroom? There’s one here in the reception hall, opposite the ticket office. OK, let’s begin our tour. The bath you can see from here is called the Great Bath, not very imaginative, but it is the biggest. The bath itself is 1.6 meters deep, ideal for bathing, and has steps leading down to the water on all sides. Let’s move on to the spring. This is in the heart of the site where the hot water comes from the ground at a temperature of 46℃. The water is rich in minerals and it’s said that it would cure various illnesses. Next, we will pass through the site of the temple. Here we are. This temple is one of the only two known classical Roman temples in Britain. The other is the temple of Claudius at Colchester. This temple is said to have been built for centuries, and over time, due to serious damage caused by human activities, what you can see here are just bits of the original temple. Okay, let’s move on.

Fred and Belle were brother and sister.
Fred bought balloons and candles and began writing a poem which he planned to sing that day. In short, a lot of things were being planned and prepared.

They were about to practice singing the poem when the delicious smell came from the kitchen. Surely, it was Mom that prepared the big meal. French toast and chicken porridge, both of which were father’s favorite foods, were ready. Eventually, everything was settled. Fred and Belle stood beside the door, waiting for their father eagerly. Soon Dad came in.
Fred and Belle were very excited to see their father. They cried out together, “Happy Father’s Day!” and then sang the poem loudly. Hearing the words and the poem, so glad was Dad that his face lit up. “We have a surprise for you!” added Fred, pointing at the decorations. “I love them very much!” Dad said excitelly and gave Fred, Belle and Mom a big hug. When he saw the dinner, his eyes widened and twinkled with excitement. He couldn’t help tasting a bit of the chicken soup, explaining that it was the best dish he had ever had. Mom smiled heartily and exchanged a gentle glance with Fred and Belle. What a beautiful and sweet surprise! The room was filled with happiness.
