At just 20 years old, Nick Griggs from Northern Ireland has become one of Europe’s most promising athletes. The young runner has won two European Under-20 Championship gold medals and now aims to compete at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Like many athletes, Griggs found inspiration from a sporting legend. “Watching Usain Bolt at the 2012 London Olympics changed everything,” he recalled. “I cheered loudly when he won the 100 meters in 9.63 seconds. That moment made me dream of becoming an Olympic medalist.”
Though starting as a sprinter (短跑运动员) and playing multiple sports including football, Griggs discovered his true talent after joining Mid-Ulster. Athletics Club at 14. His coach quickly noticed the teenager’s strong determination (决心), often arriving first for morning runs and staying late to improve his techniques. Changing to long-distance running proved successful — within two years, he won gold in the 3,000 meters at the 2021 European Under-20 Championships.
His success didn’t stop there. In 2023, he helped Ireland win gold at the European U20 Cross Country Championships and claimed individual bronze (铜牌). Then, just last November, Griggs set a new parkrun world record, completing the 5-km course at Victoria Park in Belfast in 13 minutes and 44 seconds beating the previous record by one second.
Behind these successes lie strict training routines. Griggs runs over 100 kilometers weekly, combining track workouts with hill training. “Some days I feel exhausted,” he admits, “but thinking of standing on the Olympic platform keeps me going.” His teammates describe him as “the most focused athlete in the gym”, always completing extra main exercises after regular sessions.
With the 2028 Olympics approaching, when he’ll be 23, experts believe Griggs’s steady progress could make him as a strong medal hope. “Every race teaches me something new.” says the talented runner. “My Olympic dream that started in 2012 continues to guide my training.”
4. What inspired Griggs’s Olympic dream?
A. Advice from his coach. B. His parents’ being athletes.
C. Winning a school competition. D. A famous sprinter’s Olympic victory.

Kids have pets of all kinds: dogs, cats, and fish. But have you ever heard of pet trees? Eighty fourth-grade students at the Bronx Community Charter School planted 40 young trees and took care of them for eight weeks. The program, called “A Tree Grows in the Bronx”, was part of an effort to recover the native plant habitat along the Bronx River in New York.
The Bronx River travels 23 miles from Westchester, New York, through the Bronx, which is part of New York City. It is the only freshwater river in New York City and is a place where people can fish and enjoy nature. However, some invasive (入侵的) plants were preventing native trees from growing along the river’s banks.
The New York City Parks and the Bronx Community Charter School got together and created a plan. They wanted to remove the invasive plants and replace them with native trees. Therefore, four fourth-grade classrooms got to take care of 10 young trees each for eight weeks.
They watered them and kept them alive and well until it was time to plant them outdoors. They also spent those weeks learning about the importance of trees to the environment. They learned that trees can prevent soil (土壤) from being washed away. In addition, trees can cool the air. Trees also take in CO2 from the air and produce O2.
The fourth-grade students also got to name their trees when they planted them! After taking care of their “pet” trees for eight weeks, many students were sad to leave them after planting them near the river, even though they knew that’s where the trees belonged. “There were very emotional goodbyes when the students planted their pet trees in the woods and had to go back to their school,” said Michelle A. Luebke, head of the program. “Students promised their trees they would come back to visit them often.”
For these fourth graders, learning about trees and their benefits was personal and fun. Now, they are environmental caretakers!
8. What was the problem facing the Bronx River?
A. Overuse of it for fishing. B. Short of trees on its banks.
C. Too much demand for its freshwater. D. Spread of non-native plant species.
9. What did the students learn about the trees during the 8 weeks?
A. Their environmental roles. B. Their suitable habitats.
C. Their different varieties. D. Their naming methods.
10. Why did the students become emotional according to paragraph 5?
A. They felt bad about taking part in outdoor activities.
B. They were dissatisfied with the project’s final result.
C. They developed a personal relationship with the trees.
D. They preferred hands-on projects to classroom learning.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. A New Park Grows by the Bronx River
B. Kids’ Pet Trees Come Alive in the Bronx
C. Students Study Trees in New York Schools
D. City Volunteers Help Clean the Bronx River

Social media allow teenagers to create online identities, communicate with others and build social networks. These networks can provide teenagers with valuable support. Teenagers also use social media for entertainment and self-expression. And the platforms can expose teenagers to current events, allow them to communicate across geographic barriers and teach them about different kinds of subjects, including healthy behaviors. However, social media use can also negatively affect teenagers, distracting them, influencing their sleep, and exposing them to bullying (恐吓), rumor (谣言) spreading, untrue views of other people’s lives and peer pressure.
There are steps you can take to encourage responsible use of social media and limit some of its negative effects.
Set reasonable limits. Talk to your teenager about how to avoid letting social media affect his or her activities, sleep, meals or homework. Encourage a bedtime routine that avoids electronic media use, and keep cellphones and iPads out of teenagers’ bedrooms. Set an example by following these rules yourself.
Monitor your teenager’s accounts. Let your teenager know that you’ll be regularly checking his or her social media accounts. You might aim to do so once a week or more. And make sure you follow through.
Explain what’s not OK. Discourage your teenager from gossiping, spreading rumors, bullying or damaging someone’s reputation—online or otherwise. Talk to your teenager about what is appropriate and safe to share on social media.
Encourage face-to-face contact with friends. This is particularly important for teenagers who are vulnerable to social anxiety disorder.
Talk about social media. Talk about your own social media habits. Ask your teenager how he or she is using social media and how it makes him or her feel. Remind your teenager that social media is full of unrealistic images.
If you think your teenager is experiencing signs or symptoms of anxiety or depression related to social media use, talk to your child’s health care provider immediately.

A. By providing reasons. B. By making comparison.

13. What’s a better way to avoid being affected by cellphones?
A. Powering them off. B. Putting them in the schoolbag.
C. Keeping them out of bedroom. D. Listening to them instead of watching.
14. What does the underlined word “vulnerable” in paragraph 6 probably mean?
A. Warm-hearted. B. Easily hurt. C. Deeply moved. D. Hard-working.
15. Who is the text written for?
A. Teenagers. B. Officials. C. Teachers. D. Parents.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Lily was a high school student who loved comparing herself with others. She always cared about the latest clothes, expensive phones, and designer bags. Whenever someone showed off a new item, she would feel jealous (嫉妒的) and want to buy something better. Her parents often told her, “True value isn’t in what you own,” but she never listened.
One day, Lily noticed a girl from another class whose name was Coco. Coco’s family was wealthy, but she always wore simple clothes and carried an old schoolbag. Unlike Lily, Coco never joined the students’ discussions about brands or prices. Instead, she spent her time helping classmates with math problems or volunteering in the school library. Her grades were always at the top of the class, and everyone respected (尊重) her.
Lily couldn’t understand why Coco didn’t care about material things. One afternoon, Lily saw Coco sitting alone under a tree, reading a book. She decided to talk to her. “Why don’t you buy nicer things?” Lily asked. “Your family has enough money.” Coco looked up with a smile. “I’d rather spend money on things that matter,” she said. “Like helping others or buying books.”
That night, Lily thought about Coco’s words. She realized that she had been looking for things that didn’t bring real happiness. The next day, she made a decision: she would stop comparing herself with others and start focusing on what was truly meaningful.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

12. How does the author mainly develop the first paragraph?

A. Powering them off. B. Putting them in the schoolbag.
C. Keeping them out of bedroom. D. Listening to them instead of watching.
14. What does the underlined word “vulnerable” in paragraph 6 probably mean?
A. Warm-hearted. B. Easily hurt. C. Deeply moved. D. Hard-working.
15. Who is the text written for?

Teenagers also use social media for entertainment and self-expression. And the platforms can expose teenagers to current events, allow them to communicate across geographic barriers and teach them about different kinds of subjects, including healthy behaviors. 第二节(满分25分)

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
The following week, Lily began to learn from Coco. She started by organizing her own bookshelf, donating clothes she seldom wore to charity, and spending more time reading in the library. Gradually, she found joy in helping others too. When a classmate struggled with English, Lily offered to study together after school. She even joined Coco in the library volunteer team. Instead of checking social media for the latest trends, she now looked for opportunities to make a difference. Her parents noticed the change — she talked less about buying things and more about what she had learned or who she had helped. One afternoon, while walking home, Lily realized she hadn’t compared herself to anyone all week. For the first time, she felt truly content.
Months later, teachers and classmates all praised Lily. Not only had her grades improved noticeably, but she had also become one of the most kind-hearted and respected students in school. During a class meeting, her teacher mentioned Lily’s transformation as an example of “real growth.” Coco smiled at her from across the room, and Lily knew she had finally understood what her parents meant by “true value.” It wasn’t about what you had, but who you became. Lily still liked pretty things, but now she valued kindness, knowledge, and generosity far more. She had learned that happiness comes not from having more, but from being more — for yourself and for others.
①整理:organize/sort
②捐赠:donate/contribute
③主动提供:offered to do/took the initiative to
④寻找机会:looked for/searched for
情绪类
①满足:content/satisfied
②善意:kind-hearted/benevolent
③慷慨:generosity/magnanimity
④快乐:joy/happiness
