Every fall, it collects and buries tens of thousands of pine seeds to eat during winter. But how does it remember where all those seeds are hidden? Scientists wanted to understand just how good its memory is and how its memory compares to that of other animals. Researchers studied Clark’s nutcracker in the wild and in labs. They watched the bird bury seeds and then tested its ability to find them weeks or even months later. The team also compared the nutcracker’s memory to other animals’, like squirrels and chimpanzees (黑猩猩), by setting up similar memory tests. They examined how many seeds the bird could find and how quickly it did it. The study found that Clark’s nutcracker can remember the locations of more than 20,000 seeds! It can find about 90% of its hidden seeds, even after six months. However, squirrels only remember about 60%-70% of their buried nuts, and chimpanzees, known for their cleverness, have difficulty with similar tasks. The nutcracker’s brain, especially the part called the hippocampus (which handles memory), is much larger relative to its body size than that of most other birds. This research shows that Clark’s nutcracker has one of the best memories in the animal kingdom — better than many mammals! Scientists think it is because the bird depends on hidden seeds to live through difficult winters. Some researchers believe studying the nutcracker’s brain could help us understand human memory better. Others say it’s a great example of how animals adapt to (适应) their environment in amazing ways. 1.What is the primary reason Clark’s nutcracker collects and buries pine seeds?( ) A.To fly to warmer areas. B.To store food for winter. C.To hide food from other birds. D.To trade them with other birds. 2.How many percent of hidden seeds can Clark’s nutcracker find after six months?( ) A.60%-70%. B.70%-80%. C.80%-90%. D.About 90%. 3.How did researchers compare the memory of the nutcracker with that of other animals?( ) A.By comparing their physical strength. B.By looking at their feeding habits. C.By setting up similar memory tests. D.By examining how fast it can fly. 4.What advantage might come from studying the nutcracker’s brain?( ) A.It could help bird watching programs. B.It may lead to progress in human memory research. C.It could improve wildlife protection efforts. D.It may help animals avoid natural enemies. 5.What is the best title for the passage?( ) A.The Diet and Habits of Clark’s Nutcracker.
