The Chinese idiom“mo shou cheng gui'”,which means“sticking to old rules,”hasa
cool story behind it.Long ago, during the Warring States Period, there lived a very smart
man named Mozi.He was great at making tools and knew a lot about keeping cities 1
from attacks
At the same time, there was another 2 man called Gongshu Ban.He was famous for making strong
war machines. One day,Gongshu Ban made new and 3 machines to attack a city.He thought he would
4 win with these amazing tools.
Mozi didn't want the war to happen. So,he went to see Gongshu Ban and said,"Let's do a simulation test
(模拟测试)on a table..You_5_to attack with your machines,and I'll try to stop you.”In this test,Mozi
used simple things and his clever mind.No matter how many times Gongshu Ban attacked,Mozi always found
ways to 6 the "city".Gongshu Ban tried nine different attacks, but Mozi blocked each one 7.
After failing again and again,he realized that no matter how powerful his war machines were,Mozi's
wisdom was unbeatable. Finally,he had to 8 his plan to attack the city.Over time, people started using
"Mozi's defense"to describe those who strictly 9 old methods and refused to accept new ideas, just like
someone who only counts on old rules and never tries new ways. That's how the idiom was born.
Today, when we say someone "sticks to old rules",we mean they 10 change their ways, even if
there are better options.Remember,it's good to learn from history, but we should also be brave enough to try
new things!

You may feel that maths is difficult and boring. Is it possible that you've been
looking at maths in the wrong way?Li Xing,a maths professor at Ning Xia University,
thinks maths can be beautiful and fun.I completely agree with what he said
-25
Numbers are beautiful There is maths hidden in beautiful human bodies.Measure the length from your
head to your belly button and from your belly button to your feet. The ratio()of these two numbers is
always around 0.618.This is the golden ratio, which can be seen everywhere, like in nature, music and
paintings. In Chinese poems,we can also see the beauty of numbers. As Li Bai wrote,"My skiff()has
lefi ten thousand mountains far away","A thousand miles in one day",-all these numbers show how fast Li
Bai travelled and how happy he felt.
Curves (are beautiful "Sine curves"are beautiful. They go towards the two opposite directions
on and on without ever ending. When you look at them, you may feel like standing by the sea and watching the
waves slowly moving.“Tangent curve”is like a waterfall,just as Li Bai wrote,“dashing(g猛冲)down three
thousand feet from on high".
Formulas(公式)are beautiful There are some amazing formulas.In a right--angled triangle(直角三角
)the square of the longest side is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. How amazing!Just
as Chinese-American mathematician Chern Shingshen said,"Maths is fun!"

The Three Gorges Dam(三峡大坝),lying on the Yangtze River in Hubei Province,is one of the largest
and most amazing engineering projects in the world. It stands proudly between the beautiful mountains of Xiling
Gorge, showing the wisdom and hard work of the Chinese people.
The Yangtze River,China's longest river, often caused serious floods in the past, bringing disasters to
millions of people. To solve this problem and create clean energy, the Chinese government decided to build a
huge dam.
—26—
People began to build the Three Gorges Dam in 1994.And it took over 12 years to complete.Thousands of
workers used modern machines and technology to make this dream come true. They moved mountains, changed
the river's path to build the dam, which is about 2.3 kilometres long and 185 metres high-as tall as a 60-
story building!
Today, the dam plays a key role in China. It has greatly reduced flood risks, protecting cities and
farmlands. The dam's power stations produce clean electricity for millions of homes and factories, helping
reduce air pollution.Its connected vessel system(连通器系统)helps ships pass.Ships entre a lock(水闸),
and gates close.Water level inside the lock rises or falls to match the next section. When the water levels
become the same, gates open, and the ship moves to the next lock.
The Three Gorges Dam is not just a dam-it's a symbol of China's courage and creativity.Visitors from
around the world come to see this modern wonder.Students learn about its scientific achievements and the
spirit of teamwork behind it.The dam teaches us that with determination(),humans can overcome even
the most difficult challenges of nature.

When people think of wildfires, burning trees often come up.If you see somewhere burning while its
trees remain standing, you might wonder if something unusual is happening.
2For weeks in January, large wildfires spread through Los Angeles. They destroyed a large number of
homes and many people lost their lives. As pictures of the fires spread across the Internet, people noticed trees
—27
standing next to burned-out homes and cars. Some didn't believe that a fire would leave trees untouched."Is
there a secret attack on L.A.homes?"they asked. The simple answer is no.As plenty of pictures and videos
from Los Angeles show, trees can and do catch fire.
3But it's true that some did not burn.Scientists say there is a simple explanation for that.
4It is all about moisture."It's quite easy to understand,"said Miranda Hart,a biology professor."Trees
are filled with thousands and thousands of liters()of water. To be clear, trees do burn when fires are big
and hot enough. But if a tree full of water is next to something very dry,the dry thing will burn first and even
change the way of the fire."In that way,you can imagine the fire just going around the tree if there's enough
fuel(燃料)'on either side of it,”Prof.Hart added.
5In addition, the tree type also matters.Certain trees are more likely to catch fire.Deciduous trees
(trees that lose their leaves every year),for example, are hard to burn. That's because their leaves include
more water. While for conifers一trees with needle-like(针状的)leaves,things are the opposite.
⑥n Los Angeles, palms(棕榈树)are everywhere..They've become a symbol of the city. But based on
the research, palm trees are especially easy to spread fire because of their structure and type. So,to reduce
fire risks, the local fire departments have advised against planting more palms.Without proper care, these
trees can burn and spread rapidly during wildfires and endanger the people and objects nearby.
()1.Some people had doubts about the wildfires in Los Angeles because
A.they have lasted much longer than usual
B.hidden enemies attacked homes and cars
C.some trees remained unchanged in the fires
D.pictures of the fires spread across the Internet
)2.How would a fire pass through a tree full of water and dry things according to Prof.Hart?
Oa tree full of water a dry thing
→fire's path
