For most people, having something important stolen feels like a disaster. Robbie Pruitt admitted when his mountain bike was stolen last September, he got mad. But soon his emotions took a turn. After letting go of his anger, he found himself on a road to sympathy (同情) instead. As a biker, Pruitt’s first priority was to buy one again, but when he went bike shopping, he found the options limited. The shortage in supply got him thinking: What if the person who’d taken his bike had done so because he truly needed bikes to get to work?
With that thought in mind, Pruitt came up with a plan and posted it to a local Facebook group. He offered to fix bikes free of charge for anyone who needed it. Pruitt also put out a call for bikes people don’t use, which he would repair — again for free — and then donate to people who could truly use them but didn’t have the budget to buy a bike.
The day the post was put out, Pruitt was excited about a list of 30 used bicycles. And this was followed by more than 500 posts from people who either had bikes to donate or that needed fixing soon after. By the end of the month, Pruitt had repaired more than 140 bikes for donation.
Pruitt tries to give his donations to struggling families. Beyond simply satisfying a material need, he has provided an opportunity for kids in his neighborhood to learn how to fix their own bikes.
In addition to practical skills, Pruitt’s lessons teach teamwork, encourage self-esteem, and develop feelings of community. “Pruitt is certainly providing a service, but it’s not the bikes. It’s the relationships in the community. It’s the impact he made on people. All the neighborhood kids are spending a lot more time doing something that’s in their power,” Pruitt’s next-door neighbor Danny told The Washington Post.
24.How did Pruitt feel after he went to the bike shop?
A.He was angry at the theft. B.He became eager for a new bike.
C.He would rather find his old bike. D.He tried to put himself in the thief’s shoes.
25.Why did Pruitt put a call?
A.To find his lost bike. B.To raise some money for charity.
C.To collect old bikes. D.To advertise his bike repair shop.
26.Which of the following best describes Robbie Pruitt?
A.Responsible and humorous. B.Caring and inspiring.
C.Outgoing and brave. D.Considerate and loyal.
27.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Bike Shopping: An Unexpected Adventure
B.A Bike Thief: A Trouble Maker
C.Robbie Pruitt: A Bike Repairman
D.A Kind Act: Inspiration From A Stolen Bike

Over the past 40 years, neuroscience researchers have begun to build a remarkably accurate picture of what exactly happens in the brain during adolescence.
One area of research has been neuroplasticity (神经可塑性) — that is, the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections. During childhood, the brain’s 86 billion neurons create numerous connection patterns. Each time we learn to do something, neural pathways are created that allow us to repeat and improve upon the action. By adulthood, neural pathways that have been used frequently become “fixed”, whereas the less-used or unused pathways disappear. These stronger “fixed” connections enable adults to have more complex thoughts and to carry out regular actions more effectively. However, the disappearance of other less-used connections reduces the brain’s “flexibility”. As a result, adults find it harder to master new skills or remember unfamiliar information.
It used to be thought that teenagers’ brains were similar to adults in this respect, but research has revealed that the teenage brain still has tremendous “plasticity” — less than in childhood, but more than adults — and so teenagers are better at learning and memorizing things than adults. This means this is a great age to develop new skills such as playing an instrument, learning to drive or speaking a new language. Recent research has even shown that a person’s IQ, which was previously thought to be unchanging, can improve in the teen years!
Research has also shown a further difference in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) of teenagers and adults. The PFC is the area of the brain that’s responsible for abstract thinking. Its functions include planning, predicting the results of actions as well as regulation of emotion, and focusing on goals. Unlike in adults, the teenage PFC is still developing, which explains why teenagers can be impulsive and take risks and why they find it hard to concentrate and make good choices.
Psychiatrist Dr Daniel Siegel thinks the teenage years are very exciting ones. He believes that learning about how their brains work helps teenagers develop their emotional intelligence and thought processes, allowing them to be the very best person they can be. It seems then, that the teenage years are the ideal time to learn problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
28.What happens to neural pathways as individuals grow from children to adults?
A.Some become strengthened through frequent use.
B.Some disappear as new connections are formed.
C.They increase in number but decrease in strength.
D.They remain highly flexible throughout adulthood.
29.What does higher brain plasticity mean to teenagers?
A.They are more intelligent than adults.
B.They are more interested in learning.
C.They do better in learning and memorizing.
D.They can speak a language better than adults.
30.How are teenagers influenced by the PFC?
A.They adapt to new surroundings easily.
B.They act without much consideration.
C.They are likely to make good choices.
D.They can get good control of their emotions.
31.What is Dr Daniel Siegel’s opinion?
A.Adolescence is the most challenging period of life.
B.Teenagers’ brain development is slow but smooth.
C.It is beneficial to study the development of teenagers’ brains.
D.Teenagers should be given more liberty and independence.

The global use of streaming media has provided fans of niche sports (小众体育) with easy access to international sports programs, and for followers of traditional major sports, a way to get to know niche sports. The increase of viewership platforms in the digital age has enabled many fans to explore their favorite niche sports deeper, while others actively discover new sports to follow and enjoy. Accordingly, fan clubs for niche sports have been growing.
Among the most noticeable developments in recent years that catch the fans’ attention is the rise of niche sports leagues (联盟). They attract thousands of fans to watch their games, and their television viewers reach millions. Given how quickly sports followers warm up to the leagues, everyone seems to know about them, which brings up some questions — who are watching these games and what makes a niche sports fan?
According to a recent Global Web Index report on niche sports followers, a niche sports fan is a person who follows or watches at least five niche sports leagues or events. More than half of niche sports fans fall within the 25-44 age range. They are excited about the sports content shown on streaming media, and are more likely to pay for such services compared to the general population. And they present a higher likelihood of using many kinds of second screens in sports seasons, including laptops, smartwatches, and smartphones.
Pickleball (匹克球) is a great example of a niche sport that has developed from a relatively unknown activity to a US national passion. So, what will the next pickleball be? Managing Director Peter Cosco from Isos Growth Advisory, a sports investment company, said, “Technological advancement helps fans get involved in sports, but it doesn’t make it certain. Developing fan love for a new sport, especially a niche one, takes careful management of resources, a well thought-out plan, good relationships with the right people, and the ’play’ factor. That is, is it fun to play and fun to watch?”
32.What does Paragraph 1 mainly talk about?
A.More people are aware of sports’ benefits.
B.Technology contributes to niche sports’ popularity.
C.Fans have a positive effect on niche sports’ development.
D.Sports platforms have made huge economic gain in recent years.
33.What does the author mean by saying “sports followers warm up to the leagues”?
A.Sports followers want to join the leagues.
B.The leagues have attracted energetic players.
C.The leagues make changes based on fans’ preferences.
D.Sports followers become very interested in the leagues.
34.What is a characteristic of niche sports fans?
A.They are addicted to electronics.
B.They come from different age groups.
C.They are socially disconnected in daily life.
D.They are highly dependent on digital services.
35.What do Peter Cosco’s words suggest?
A.Pickleball became widely known by accident.
B.A sport needs various conditions to interest people.
C.Niche sports should be improved to attract a larger audience.
D.Technology offers increasing chances to introduce newborn sports.

My wife and I were taking a trip from Charlotte to Hot Springs for a ski time. I had an SUV that I had been driving for many years.
It was a sunny Friday midday when we made it close to our destination. Suddenly I started hearing a. heavy sound from the car, as if someone was pounding against the engine area. “Is that dirt or mud? ” asked my wife. But considering we had been on the highway for 2 hours without hitting anything, I knew it had to be something wrong with my car. It only took a few seconds before I realized the noise came from under the hood (引擎盖) — something had broken loose.
We pulled over on a nearby turn and I cracked the hood open. My engine belt was absolutely torn apart. I quickly saw why: An oil leak (漏) had damaged it and left us stuck on the road.
It wasn’t 5 minutes before a gentleman named Steve stopped and offered help. He drove me to a nearby auto parts store that had a belt and back to the car so that we could get it on. Steve and I quickly got to work. Removing the torn belt was tough — it was stuck deep in the gap between the parts. After removing all the pieces, we tried to put the new belt on. We pulled and dragged, but the belt refused to fit onto the right position.
Disappointed, we accepted defeat. It was clear that we needed a professional to help us. So I called a mobile repairman. After explaining where we were, he said kindly but firmly, “Sorry, it’s Friday rush hour. I can’t get there before 6 p. m. ” My heart sank. That meant we would wait for hours on the cold mountain road and even miss our ski the next day.

Morning everyone. Today, we’re going to talk about how to raise goldfish. Speaking of goldfish. This animal is very common to see everywhere. With a little bit of care, your goldfish can live much longer than you might expect. First, choose the largest possible container you can afford and decorate it with objects such as small rocks and plants. However, be careful not to put sharp objects in the container that may harm your fish. Second, feed them only as much as they can eat in a few minutes and immediately remove any leftover food. The most important thing is to clean the container and change the water at least once every week. To make it easier for the fish to adjust to the new water, partial water changes are much better than complete water changes. By doing all these things, you can be sure your fish will survive into their golden years. Later, we’ll watch a short video, so you can have a better understanding of what I’ve said.

根据第一段中“As a biker, Pruitt’s first priority was to buy one again, but when he went bike shopping, he found the options limited. The shortage in supply got him thinking: What if the person who’d taken his bike had done so because he truly needed bikes to get to work? (作为一名自行车爱好者,Pruitt的首要任务是再买一辆,但当他去买自行车时,他发现选择有限。供应短缺让他开始思考:如果那个偷他自行车的人这么做是因为他真的需要自行车去上班呢)”可知,去了自行车店后,Pruitt试着换位思考,理解小偷可能面临的困境。故选D项。
25.细节理解题。根据第二段中“Pruitt also put out a call for bikes people don’t use, which he would repair — again for free — and then donate to people who could truly use them but didn’t have the budget to buy a bike. (Pruitt还发起了一项号召,向人们征集闲置的自行车——他会将这些自行车免费修理好——然后捐赠给那些真正需要自行车但无力购买的人)”可知,Pruitt发起号召是为了收集旧自行车。故选C项。
26.推理判断题。根据第二段中“He offered to fix bikes free of charge for anyone who needed it. Pruitt also put out a call for bikes people don’t use, which he would repair — again for free — and then donate to people who could truly use them but didn’t have the budget to buy a bike. (他提出为任何需要的人免费修理自行车。Pruitt还发起了一项号召,向人们征集闲置的自行车——他会将这些自行车免费修理好——然后捐赠给那些真正需要自行车但无力购买的人)”和最后一段中“In addition to practical skills, Pruitt’s lessons teach teamwork, encourage self-esteem, and develop feelings of community. (除了实用技能,Pruitt的课程还教授团队合作,鼓励自尊,培养社区感情)”可知,Pruitt免费修理自行车,并征集闲置自行车,修好后捐赠给有困难的人,而且教授团队合作和自尊,说明他富有爱心,关爱他人;根据最后一段中“Pruitt is certainly providing a service, but it’s not the bikes. It’s the relationships in the community. It’s the impact he made on people. All the neighborhood kids are spending a lot more time doing something that’s in their power (Pruitt当然是在提供一种服务,但不是自行车。是社区中的关系。而是他对人们的影响。所有邻居的孩子都花了更多的时间去做他们力所能及的事情)”可知,Pruitt促进了社区关系,影响了他人,说明他激励人心。故选B项。
27.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“The shortage in supply got him thinking: What if the person who’d taken his bike had done so because he truly needed bikes to get to work?

【答案】28.A 29.C 30.B 31.C
根据第二段中“By adulthood, neural pathways that have been used frequently become ‘fixed’, whereas the less-used or unused pathways disappear. These stronger ‘fixed’ connections enable adults to have more complex thoughts and to carry out regular actions more effectively. (到成年后,经常使用的神经通路变得‘固定’,而较少使用或未使用的神经通路则消失。这些更强的‘固定’连接使成年人有更复杂的想法,并更有效地执行常规行动。)”可知,随着个体从儿童成长为成年人,经常被使用的神经通路会变得“固定”,也就是得到了加强。故选A项。
根据第三段中“It used to be thought that teenagers’ brains were similar to adults in this respect, but research has revealed that the teenage brain still has tremendous ‘plasticity’ — less than in childhood, but more than adults — and so teenagers are better at learning and memorizing things than adults. This means this is a great age to develop new skills such as playing an instrument, learning to drive or speaking a new language. (过去人们认为,青少年的大脑在这方面与成年人相似,但研究表明,青少年的大脑仍然具有巨大的‘可塑性’——比儿童时期少,但比成年人多——因此,青少年在学习和记忆方面比成年人更好。这意味着这是一个培养新技能的好年龄,比如演奏乐器、学习开车或说一门新语言。)”可知,青少年大脑具有更高的可塑性,这意味着他们比成年人更擅长学习和记忆东西。故选C项。
30.细节理解题。根据第四段中“Unlike in adults, the teenage PFC is still developing, which explains why teenagers can be impulsive and take risks and why they find it hard to concentrate and make good choices. (与成年人不同,青少年的PFC仍在发育中,这就解释了为什么青少年会冲动、冒险,以及为什么他们很难集中注意力、做出正确的选择。)”可知,青少年的前额叶皮层(PFC)仍在发育,这解释了为什么青少年会冲动、冒险,也就是他们做事不经过太多考虑。故选B项。
31.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Psychiatrist Dr Daniel Siegel thinks the teenage years are very exciting ones. He believes that learning about how their brains work helps teenagers develop their emotional intelligence and thought processes, allowing them to be the very best person they can be. It seems then, that the teenage years are the ideal time to learn problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

此处为固定搭配“not only...but (also)…”,意为“不但……而且……”,此处省略了also。故填but。
故填to。
故填to see。
故填which。
故填in。
故填including。

Good morning, everyone,
I firmly believe smartphones are a smart choice, when used wisely.
First, they revolutionize communication. We can video-chat with overseas friends, share life moments via social media, or even join global study groups — breaking through geographical barriers effortlessly. Second, they empower productivity. From scheduling tasks with reminders to using note-taking apps for classes, they turn chaos into order. Take my experience: a translation app helped me decode a foreign textbook during last week’s project.
But remember: tools are only as smart as their users. Let’s harness smartphones to enhance life, not let screens dominate us. Stay present, yet connected — that’s the real smart choice. Thank you.

注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Seeing our disappointment, Steve offered a solution.

After a great ski time, I called Steve to return his car as promised.

Seeing our disappointment, Steve offered a solution. He said that he lived nearby and could lend us his car, which was parked not far away. I was surprised and asked if he was sure, as I didn’t want to trouble him. He smiled and said it was no problem, adding that he could get a ride home from his friend. We thanked him repeatedly and drove his car to Hot Springs, where we had a great time preparing for the next day’s ski.
After a great ski time, I called Steve to return his car as promised. When we met, I gave him a small gift to show our thanks, which he accepted happily. He told me that helping others made him feel good, and that he hoped I would do the same for someone else. I promised I would, knowing that kindness is something we should pass on. We said goodbye, and I felt lucky to have met such a warm-hearted person.
