When Gary Leung completely lost his eyesight nearly 15 years ago, it almost destroyed him. The Hong Kong native fell into hopelessness. Just at that time, he found long-distance running.
Now in his 50s, Leung has since completed the 100-kilometer Antarctic Ice Marathon, becoming the first blind person to do so. He even attempted the 400 km “Ultra Gobi”, thought to be one of the most challenging foot-races in the world. Recently, he is fresh off a 2,300 km charity run in Japan.
The Japanese “Dark Run 2023” was divided into 40 days, meaning Leung and his guide runners—connected by a string attachment—ran an average of more than 50 km per day. The run was aimed at raising money for young people with serious illnesses and showing them that all people have obstacles (障碍), but we must face them head-on and with bravery.
Though Leung can’t physically see things in front of him, he says that doesn’t make him fearful of running long distances now. He thinks there’s no need to be scared for those who are lacking in something. The universe will equip them with other talents. And they are never alone, just like he wasn’t alone on this run. His guide runners gave up their own holidays and put their own money in to fly over and support him.
“I want to pass down the spirit. I’m not young anymore and won’t be able to run these distances much longer,” he says, smiling. “I want to help my younger friends with similar experiences to learn to love exercise. Doing physical activities is not as easy for them as it is for able-bodied people, so I want to set up a stage where we can continue to bring things to them—and for them to do the same for more.”
24.What does long-distance running mean for Leung?
A.A cure for his eyes. B.A tool for making a living.
C.A way out of life’s worst. D.A form of physical exercise.
25.How does Leung finish all his long-distance running?
A.He was guided while running. B.He managed it by himself.
C.He sought help from the organizers. D.He took advantage of public transport.
26.What can be inferred from Leung’s words in the last paragraph?
A.He is ready to challenge longer running.
B.He is too tired to go on with charity work.
C.He wants young people to follow his example.
D.He thinks running is easy for the blind to take up.
27.Which words can best describe Leung?
A.Humorous and honest. B.Strong-willed and inspiring.
C.Responsible and outgoing. D.Independent and warm-hearted.

Long ago, in ancient China, there was a story about the invention of silk. People believed that silk was first invented by Leizu, the wife of the Yellow Emperor. Leizu learned how to make cocoons (蚕茧) into soft and strong cloth. This magical cloth became known as “silk”, and it was so valuable that it was called “China’s Gold”. Following kings’ orders, the Chinese kept the secret of making silk for centuries.
But then, something amazing happened! During the Han Dynasty, the brave officer Zhang Qian traveled west as far as Central Asia and brought silk there. As years passed by, silk became so important that the trade road from Europe to China got its name — the Silk Road.
The Silk Road became a busy highway for traders who carried things across deserts and mountains. From China, people sold silk and tea. In return, they received treasures such as spices, gold and silver from the West. At the very beginning, it was mainly about trade; then people began to share ideas, technologies and cultures. For example, Chinese inventions like papermaking were spread to the West, while new ideas about math and science came to China.
Most importantly, the Silk Road helped different cultures learn from each other. Art, music and even language were shared along this ancient road. In places like the Dunhuang Grottoes in China, you can see how art pieces combined Eastern and Western styles into something distinctive. It can not be seen anywhere else.
The story of the Silk Road tells us how people from faraway lands could become friends through trade and shared ideas. Today, we remember the Silk Road as one of the greatest examples of cooperation and exchange in history. It shows us how important it is to learn about and respect each other’s traditions, and that different cultures can work together to create amazing things.
28.What was spread from China to the West according to paragraph 3?
A.Silk and gold. B.Tea and papermaking.
C.Spices and silver. D.New ideas of science.
29.What is the right order of the following facts from the passage?
① Zhang Qian traveled west with silk.
② Art and language were shared along the Silk Road.
③ Traders from China and the West exchanged things.
④ The Chinese were ordered to keep the secret of making silk.
A.①→④→③→② B.①→③→④→②
C.④→①→③→② D.④→③→②→①
30.What does the underlined word “distinctive” mean in paragraph 4?
A.Special. B.Public. C.Popular. D.Strong.
31.What does the story of the Silk Road mainly tell us?
A.The change of world trade.
B.The introduction of silk cloth.
C.The influence of technology in history.
D.The importance of cross-cultural communication.

Just as damaged teeth can be replaced with gold crowns (齿冠), scientists are exploring how gold can be used to repair damaged parts of the brain.
Scientists at Linkoping University in Sweden said that a “brain of gold” might just be what we need to fight nervous system diseases. The plan is to put gold electrodes (电极) into the affected part of the brain. They will act as “telephone operators” between nerve cells and electronic medical devices, enabling communication so that the nervous system can function normally.
Treatment plans that involve connecting medical devices to the brain already exist. However, the electrodes used are usually made of hard metals, while the brain is like a jelly that “shakes” at the body’s slightest movement.
“As the body is constantly in motion, achieving close contact between something that is hard and something that is soft and breakable becomes a problem,” explained Klas Tybrandt, one of the scientists.
This is why the Swedish scientists are using a new material called “gold nanowires” (金纳米线). As the name suggests, these are long, extremely thin gold threads — 1,000 times thinner than human hair. By putting them into rubber, the scientists have successfully created electrodes that are soft enough to connect comfortably with the human brain.
Gold can be made into structures as small as nanowires. According to Live Science, gold can be stretched, pressed or even rolled into all kinds of shapes without breaking. What’s more, gold doesn’t react with other chemicals in the human brain, making it a safe choice. Once placed in the brain, gold nanowires can last for at least three years, which is longer than many materials currently in use.
32.What role will gold electrodes play in treating nervous system diseases?
A.Replacing damaged nerve cells. B.Serving as a communication link.
C.Activating different brain regions. D.Protecting the brain’s unaffected parts.
33.What can we learn about gold nanowires?
A.They are harder than rubber. B.They are as thin as human hair.
C.They can be placed into the brain. D.They are in the final stage of development.
34.Why is gold a safe choice for use in the brain?
A.It can be stretched by the brain. B.It can be made into various shapes.
C.It is being used to create soft electrodes. D.It has no negative impact on the brain’s functions.
35.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The unique properties of gold nanowires.
B.The history of gold use in the medical field.
C.The current applications of gold in the brain.
D.The potential use of gold in nervous system treatment.

Overcoming Fear of Failure
Have you ever been so afraid of failing at something that you decided not to try at all? Or has fear of failure meant that, subconsciously, you undermined (削弱) your own efforts to avoid the possibility of a larger failure? 36 It’s important to realize that in everything we do, there’s always a chance that we’ll fail. Facing that chance and embracing it give us a more rewarding life. Here are a few ways to reduce the fear of failing.
Analyze all potential outcomes. 37 Remove that fear by considering all of the potential outcomes of your decision. You can map possible outcomes visually.
Set small goals. Imagining how life will be after you’ve reached your goal is a great motivator to keep you moving forward. So start by setting a few small goals. 38 Don’t focus on the end picture. Just focus on the next step. Taking one small step at a time will help build your confidence, keep you moving towards your final goal.
Learn to think more positively. Every coin has two sides. 39 Learn to change your thoughts and focus more on the bright side of the situation, making you like yourself. Positive thinking is an incredibly powerful way to build self-confidence.
40 In some cases, the toughest situation may be genuinely disastrous (灾难性的) and it may be perfectly reasonable to fear failure. In other cases, however, this worst case may actually not be that bad, and recognizing this can help.
A.Look at the worse-case situation.
B.It is up to you to decide which one to look at.
C.Failing at something can help you discover your truest friends.
D.Many of us have probably experienced this at one time or another.
E.If you are afraid of failure, you might be uncomfortable setting goals.
F.These should be goals that are slightly, but not overwhelmingly, challenging.
G.Many people experience fear of failure because they fear the unknown.

Sara’s day at school was very busy and she was very tired. She had to wait for her father who had worked overtime to pick her up. Waiting in the school ground, Sara didn’t want to talk to anybody.
When Sara reached home, the food was ready and her mum was waiting for her. After greeting her mum. Sara sat on the chair to eat as she was very hungry. But her hunger turned into anger when she saw that her mum had cooked daal chawal(扁豆饭). She wanted to eat pizza that day while her mum had cooked daal chawal.
“Mum, what is this? Why don’t you cook the food I like? There are always vegetables and daal chawal at our table. I don’t want to eat them. I am not hungry anymore. I am going to order a pizza for myself,” Sara said as she stormed off in anger to her room.
Her mother said nothing. Upstairs in her room, Sara called her best fiend Aliya, wanting to have a little chat so that she could express her frustration and find some comfort.
“Sara, how are you?” it was Aliya’s mother on the phone.
“I am fine, Aunty. Can I talk to Aliya?” Sara replied respectfully.
“Aliya is having her lunch. Today, I’ve cooked her favorite dish, Aliya’s mother replied excitedly.
Sara became curious. ”Aunty, what’s Aliya’s favorite dish?“ Sara asked.
”Daal chawal, she loves it! “ Aliya’s mother answered and continued, ”What has your mother cooked today?“

Sara realized how mistaken she was. Here she was, complaining about the very food that her friend cherished. Aliya had never once grumbled about her meals. Sara felt ashamed of her ingratitude. Her mother worked hard every day to provide for the family. Sara understood now that food was not just nourishment; it was a reflection of love and care. She felt a sense of guilt for her thoughtless words and actions. Determined to make a change, Sara stood up, resolved to apologize to her mother and appreciate the meal that awaited her.
But as she reached the kitchen door, she was surprised to see her mother preparing pizza for her. Tears welled up in Sara’s eyes as she witnessed her mother’s unconditional love. “Mum,” she said softly, “I’m so sorry for what I said earlier. I didn’t mean to hurt you. I should have appreciated your effort instead of complaining.” Her mother smiled warmly, her eyes twinkling with tears of joy. “Family is about understanding and forgiveness. Come, let’s eat together and enjoy our meal.” They sat down at the table, hearts mended and spirits high, sharing a meal filled with love, understanding, and forgiveness.

A.Silk and gold. B.Tea and papermaking.
C.Spices and silver. D.New ideas of science.

① Zhang Qian traveled west with silk.
② Art and language were shared along the Silk Road.

A.①→④→③→② B.①→③→④→②
C.④→①→③→② D.④→③→②→①
30.What does the underlined word “distinctive” mean in paragraph 4?
A.Special. B.Public. C.Popular. D.Strong.
31.What does the story of the Silk Road mainly tell us?

Sara’s day at school was very busy and she was very tired. She had to wait for her father who had worked overtime to pick her up. Waiting in the school ground, Sara didn’t want to talk to anybody.

That is also where he started his trip five months ago. Rutherford turned 17 during his trip. He broke the Guinness World Record for the youngest male to fly around the world. That record had been held by Travis Ludlow of Britain. Ludlow was 18 when he made his flight around the world last year. Rutherford was born into a family of flyers. His sister, Zara finished her own around-the-world flight in January at the age of 19. Zara also set the record as the youngest woman to fly alone around the world. To break the Guinness World Records, Rutherford crossed the equator twice. He first planned to make the trip in three months. However, it lasted longer because of several barriers, including rainstorms, sandstorms and extreme heat. Most of the delays were caused by waits to get permits and other documents required for keeping with the flight plan. On Wednesday, a huge crowd of people welcomed Rutherford and celebrated his achievements.

【答案】32.B 33.C 34.D 35.D

They will act as “telephone operators” between nerve cells and electronic medical devices, enabling communication so that the nervous system can function normally.(该计划是将金电极放入大脑受影响的部分。
根据倒数第二段“This is why the Swedish scientists are using a new material called “gold nanowires” (金纳米线). As the name suggests, these are long, extremely thin gold threads — 1,000 times thinner than human hair. By putting them into rubber, the scientists have successfully created electrodes that are soft enough to connect comfortably with the human brain.(这就是为什么瑞典科学家使用一种名为“金纳米线”的新材料。顾名思义,这些都是又长又细的金线,比人的头发细1000倍。通过将它们放入橡胶中,科学家们成功地制造出了足够柔软的电极,可以舒适地与人类大脑连接。)”以及最后一段“Once placed in the brain, gold nanowires can last for at least three years, which is longer than many materials currently in use.(一旦植入大脑,金纳米线可以持续使用至少三年,这比目前使用的许多材料都要长。)”
根据最后一段“What’s more, gold doesn’t react with other chemicals in the human brain, making it a safe choice.(更重要的是,黄金不会与人脑中的其他化学物质发生反应,因此它是一个安全的选择。)”
通读全文,尤其是第一段“Just as damaged teeth can be replaced with gold crowns (齿冠), scientists are exploring how gold can be used to repair damaged parts of the brain.(就像损坏的牙齿可以用金冠代替一样,科学家们正在探索如何用黄金来修复大脑受损的部分。)”

56.stands 57.to reflect 58.beauty 59.more impressive 60.where 61.from 62.covering 63.have been used 64.centuries 65.a
故填to reflect。
故填more impressive。
故填where。
prevent...from... 故填from。
由In recent years可知,句子时态用现在完成时,现代技术是被使用,因此空格处是现在完成时的被动语态,即have/has been done,主语technologies是复数,因此空格处是have been used。故填have been used。
故填a。

On one hot day in Faisalabad, a city in northeast Pakistan, the sun was shining with its full might. Everyone was in a hurry to go back home and sit in a cool airy place. Even the stray animals were looking for a shady place to sit under.
”Daal chawal," Sara replied in a low voice. She recalled her conversation with Aliya about food at lunchtime in school, where Aliya had mentioned the foods she often enjoyed at home but never complained about any of them.
Paragraph 1: Sara realized how mistaken she was.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: But as she reached the kitchen door, she was surprised to see her mother preparing pizza for her.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
