At just 14 years old, Ryan Hickman from San Juan Hills High School, US, has made waves (引起轰动) with a beach clean-up campaign (运动). On April 20th, he and many volunteers from Project 3R, the nonprofit (非营利机构) he created, started a five-week campaign at five beaches along the Southern California coast and some in Mexico to remove trash (清除垃圾).
“The trash ends up in the ocean, and animals are eating it,” Hickman told The Orange County Register. “Picking up a piece of trash may save a turtle’s life.”
In 2012, Ryan Hickman started to pick up the trash around the beaches. Ever since then, he and some volunteers have collected about 2 million bottles and cans (金属罐) from beaches, lakes and rivers.
From a young age, Hickman had developed a love for recycling and had always liked trash trucks. He put the two interests together and began collecting recyclables (可回收物) to raise money. In 2017, Hickman gave away a $10, 000 (about 72,000 yuan) check to the PMMC after picking up 50, 000 pounds of trash and more than 200, 000 recyclable bottles.
Along with organizing volunteer cleanups, Hickman has also traveled worldwide, speaking to kids about caring for the planet and oceans. At the Ocean Institute in California, he started a program where primary school students clean local beaches and then board (登船) the institute’s teaching ship to learn about pollution’s influence.
“It’s fun,”he said.“The people I talk to may encourage them, and they might organize a cleanup, too.”

From Pocket Money to Hope
Part 1: Read and Explore
Twelve-year-old Mia from Guangzhou loves helping others. Last year, she read a news story about children in a poor mountain village who didn‘t have enough school supplies. “I couldn’t stop thinking about them,” Mia says. “I wanted to do something.”
Mia decided to use her hobby of making handmade bracelets. She made dozens of colorful bracelets and sold them at her school’s charity fair. With the money she raised—over 500 yuan—she bought notebooks, pencils, and erasers. Then she and her mum donated the supplies to a primary school in Yunnan.
“When the children received the gifts, their eyes lit up,” Mia recalls. “One little girl hugged the notebook and said she had never had a new one before. That moment made me realize that even small actions can bring big smiles.”
Encouraged by her success, Mia took another step. She asked her friends to join her. Together, they formed a small group called “Helping Hands.” Every month, they collect used but good-quality clothes, books, and toys from classmates. They clean and sort them, then give them to families in need.
Mia’s mum says, “I‘m proud of her. She used to spend her pocket money on snacks. Now she saves it to buy things for others.”
Mia also learned that helping doesn’t always require money. Sometimes a kind act costs nothing. She and her group visit an old people‘s home nearby every two weeks. They talk with the elderly, read stories, and help clean the yard. “The elderly are often lonely,” Mia says. “They just want someone to listen to them. Our time is the best gift we can give.”
Mia’s story spread in her community. Soon, more students wanted to join. A local shop owner even donated some notebooks. “Anyone can make a difference,” Mia says. “You don‘t have to be rich or powerful. You just need a caring heart and the willingness to act.”
Now, Mia is planning a new project: collecting winter coats for homeless people. “Winter is coming,” she explains. “Everyone deserves to be warm.” She hopes her small actions will inspire others to start their own projects.
“It feels good to help,” Mia says with a smile. “And when you see the happiness you bring to others, you know it’s all worth it.”
