Mike Pavlik sees a lot while recovering stolen bikes around Minneapolis. Once, pretending to be a potential buyer, he dressed up in a sport coat and met a seller. Pavlik took note of the bike’s make, model, and markings, confirming it was the one he was hunting. He asked to take it for a test ride. The seller wanted some collateral (抵押物).
“Do I look like the kind of guy that steals bikes, dude?” Pavlik recalls asking the man. Then he just pedaled off. An hour later, the seller texted him, “I guess you’re not coming back?”
Pavlik is part of an unusual army: amateur detectives who find stolen bikes and return them to their owners. As bike theft becomes more profitable, grassroots efforts to frustrate thieves are springing up nationwide. The volunteers say recovering bikes can be strangely fun and addictive.
Pavlik, who is 51, works part-time at Trader Joe’s when he is not serving as a detective for Twin Cities Stolen Bikes, which has a Facebook page with 11,000 members. Pavlik has a certain skill set from working as a bartender and a National Guard police officer. “I can read people and talk to them really well,” he says. “I’m also not afraid to get in someone’s face. Most of these guys are cowards (胆小鬼).”
Said a Minneapolis police spokesman: “While we commend all residents who step up to improve their communities, safety and lawfulness are the most important. We do not support aggressive strategies that put anyone in harm’s way.”
One guy who Pavlik says allegedly (据说) runs a bike theft ring also stands out. The first time he confronted the man with a bike’s proof of ownership, the man pedaled off. Pavlik gave chase on his bike and shot him with pepper spray until he crashed. “I got him,” he says. “Then I just lifted the stolen bike onto my shoulder and sped off.” Another victory.
24. Why did Pavlik ask to take the bike for a test ride?
A. To check the bike’s condition. B. To impress the seller.
C. To take back the bike. D. To show he is a serious buyer.
25. What is the main reason for the rise of amateur bike detectives?
A. Social media’s role in organization. B. The rise in bike theft cases.
C. Volunteers’ enjoyment of bike recovery. D. The police’s failure to stop bike theft.
26. What does the police spokesman imply?
A. Pavlik’s methods are against the law. B. Residents’ actions are worth encouraging.
C. Improving community living safety is urgent. D. Dangerous situations should be left to the police.
27. Which of the following best describes Pavlik?
A. Brave and skillful. B. Friendly and honest. C. Confident and sociable. D. Kind and patient.
C 25. B 26. D 27. A

In today’s globalized world, plastic pollution has emerged as a major environmental concern. Every year, over 400 million tons of plastic are produced worldwide, much of which is designed for single use. The convenience of disposable packaging — for food, drinks, and consumer goods — has led to an enormous increase in waste. Although plastics are lightweight and flexible, these very properties make them difficult to collect and recycle efficiently.
The impact on the planet extends far beyond visual pollution. It is estimated that more than 8 million tons of plastic enter the oceans annually, affecting over 700 marine species. Seabirds, turtles, and fish often mistake plastic for food, which may lead to injury or death. Moreover, plastic debris breaks down into micro-plastics — tiny particles that can be absorbed by marine life and eventually enter the human food chain. Recent studies have detected micro-plastics in tap water, air, and even human bodies, although the long-term health effects remain uncertain.
In response, governments and organizations have launched many initiatives. Some nations have banned certain single-use plastics, such as straws or shopping bags. Others focus on boosting recycling rates or offering incentives (奖励) to companies that use biodegradable materials. However, these approaches face multiple hurdles. Recycling infrastructure is inadequate in many regions, and biodegradable plastics require specific conditions to decompose, which are not always available.
Experts stress the need for a combination of policy, technology, and individual action. Dr. Anna Carter, a marine biologist, points out that education and public awareness play a powerful role. “When people understand the consequences of daily choices,” she says, “they are more likely to reduce unnecessary packaging, select reusable products, and participate in local clean-ups.” Innovative companies are also investing in new materials — like plant-based plastics — which promise to be more eco-friendly in the long run.
Ultimately, solving plastic pollution requires collaboration between governments, industries, and citizens. While progress has been made, the challenge is ongoing. Dr. Carter insists, “Every effort, big or small, can spark change. It starts with everyone.”
28. Why is plastic pollution a major concern?
A. Plastic is cheap to produce. B. Plastic products are convenient to use.
C. Plastic waste is increasing rapidly. D. Plastic is single-use and hard to recycle.
29. How does the author show the impact of plastic pollution?
A. By presenting experimental results. B. By presenting data and examples.
C. By analyzing survey reports. D. By quoting findings from experts.
30. The underlined word “hurdles” in Paragraph 3 probably means ________.
A. difficulties B. requirements C. drawbacks D. changes
31. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To present expert views on solutions. B. To highlight new materials for sustainability.
C. To raise awareness and call for action. D. To report studies on plastic harm.
D 29. B 30. A 31. C
根据第一段中“Every year, over 400 million tons of plastic are produced worldwide, much of which is designed for single use. The convenience of disposable packaging — for food, drinks, and consumer goods — has led to an enormous increase in waste. Although plastics are lightweight and flexible, these very properties make them difficult to collect and recycle efficiently.(全球每年生产的塑料超过4亿吨,其中大部分是一次性使用的。食品、饮料和消费品的一次性包装带来的便利性,导致了垃圾数量的急剧增加。尽管塑料重量轻且柔韧,但正是这些特性使得它们难以被高效收集和回收)”可知,塑料污染之所以成为主要问题,是因为塑料是一次性的且难以回收。故选D。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“It is estimated that more than 8 million tons of plastic enter the oceans annually, affecting over 700 marine species. Seabirds, turtles, and fish often mistake plastic for food, which may lead to injury or death.(据估计,每年有超过800万吨塑料进入海洋,影响超过700种海洋生物。海鸟、海龟和鱼类经常将塑料误认为食物,这可能导致受伤或死亡)”可知,作者通过呈现数据和实例来展示塑料污染的影响。故选B。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中“However, these approaches face multiple hurdles. Recycling infrastructure is inadequate in many regions, and biodegradable plastics require specific conditions to decompose, which are not always available.(然而,这些方法面临多重hurdles。许多地区的回收基础设施不足,生物降解塑料需要特定条件才能分解,而这些条件并不总是具备)”可知,这些方法面临多重困难,所以“hurdles”意为“困难”。故选A。
根据最后一段中“Ultimately, solving plastic pollution requires collaboration between governments, industries, and citizens. While progress has been made, the challenge is ongoing. Dr. Carter insists, “Every effort, big or small, can spark change. It starts with everyone.”(最终,解决塑料污染需要政府、行业和公民之间的合作。虽然已经取得了进展,但挑战仍在继续。卡特博士坚持说:“每一个努力,无论大小,都能引发改变。这始于每个人。”)”可知,文章的主要目的是提高人们的意识并呼吁采取行动。故选C。
D
At times our emotions can seem like unreasonable responses, but our brains have carefully evolved these mechanisms with just one target: keeping us alive. While we interpret different emotions as positive or negative, the most ancient parts of the human brain developed them on the principle that we must survive. We evolved emotions as a means of communicative function and as a way to help us navigate social interactions and our environment safely: they are designed to protect us. Our fear responses were originally a survival strategy that warned us of potential dangers, such as our inborn unease around spiders and snakes. Then there is the feeling of disgust, which warns us of foods or other substances that may be dangerous.
Our other emotions are responses to social interactions that keep us part of a group. We are fundamentally a social species, and throughout our evolution have relied on our tribe to help us survive by working together to find food and shelter. Anger is a response to perceived social threats or a signal of dominance; pride can help us to boost our social status, while shame is intended to decrease our standing within a group. These emotions maintain the social balance of our tribe — who we follow, who we trust, who we care about.
The fundamental emotions that motivate us individually are almost always sadness and happiness. Sadness results from loss, and serves the biological purpose of motivating a person to recover that loss, whether it is a young child searching for their mother in a supermarket or someone trying hard to get a new job after being dismissed. But the ultimate human emotion is happiness, and we are all in search of it. When you’re sitting around a campfire, safe in the countryside with some close friends and good food, you feel happiness because you have found the resources that your primitive brain is seeking.
The next time you sit in an airport departure lounge, look for the emotions. Our bodies have created these experiences — the tears as we say goodbye, the smiles and laughter as we are reunited — for the purpose of keeping us alive. Our emotions and feelings are fundamentally what make us human, but this means we’re in for a bit of a roller coaster along the way.
32. What does the author say about emotions?
A. They appear illogical at times. B. They developed to ensure our survival.
C. They are viewed as either good or bad. D. They signal threats from certain substances.
33. According to the text, when does happiness occur?
A. When people's emotional needs are met. B. When we recover from a painful loss.
C. When people get along with their group. D. When our ancient brain gets what it wants.
34. Why does the author mention "roller coaster" in the last paragraph?
A. To show that emotions are unpredictable. B. To stress emotions are hard to control.
C. To explain the ups and downs of emotions. D. To describe the exciting nature of emotions.
35. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. The Purpose Behind Our Feelings B. How Emotions Shape Our Lives
C. The Social Nature of Emotions D. Emotions: Protection or More?
B 33. D 34. C 35. A
根据第一段中的“At times our emotions can seem like unreasonable responses, but our brains have carefully evolved these mechanisms with just one target: keeping us alive. While we interpret different emotions as positive or negative, the most ancient parts of the human brain developed them on the principle that we must survive. We evolved emotions as a means of communicative function and as a way to help us navigate social interactions and our environment safely: they are designed to protect us.(有时我们的情绪似乎是不合理的反应,但我们的大脑已经仔细地进化了这些机制,只有一个目标:让我们活着。虽然我们将不同的情绪解释为积极或消极,但人类大脑最古老的部分是基于我们必须生存的原则发展起来的。我们进化出的情绪是一种交流功能,也是帮助我们安全地驾驭社交互动和环境的一种方式:它们旨在保护我们)”可知,作者明确指出情绪进化的唯一目标是保证我们存活,它们是用来保护我们的。故选B。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段的“When you’re sitting around a campfire, safe in the countryside with some close friends and good food, you feel happiness because you have found the resources that your primitive brain is seeking.(当你坐在篝火旁,与一些亲密的朋友和美味的食物安全地呆在乡下时,你会感到幸福,因为你找到了原始大脑正在寻找的资源)”可知,当人们身处安全环境、与朋友共享美食时感到快乐,是因为找到了原始大脑所寻求的资源。
根据最后一段“Our emotions and feelings are fundamentally what make us human, but this means we’re in for a bit of a roller coaster along the way.(我们的情绪和感受从根本上使我们成为人类,但这意味着我们一路上会有点过山车)”可知,作者用“roller coaster”比喻情绪如同过山车一样有高有低、起伏不定,这是作为人类必然要经历的情感体验。
A项“The Purpose Behind Our Feelings(我们感情背后的目的)”准确概括了这一主旨。故选A。

Tony Wolf, PhD, assistant professor at the University of Georgia. ____37____ It also relies on things like humidity and air flow. Plus, combinations of factors unique to individuals — age, gender, body mass, medical conditions and medications — affect how we experience temperature. And fortunately, there are many things we can do to stay comfortable in spite of the heat.
____38____ “Sweating is how we regulate heat,” says Robert Kenefick, PhD, professor at the University of Massachusetts. “Drinking plain, cool water or fluids with electrolytes (like sports drinks) helps.”
Choose clothing that’s right — light fabrics, light colors — and loose. Loose clothing allows for better airflow and helps keep you cool. ____39____
Keep windows covered with shades, blinds or curtains. Think of how a car with closed windows heats up when left sitting in sunlight — it’s called the greenhouse effect. The same thing can happen at home if uncovered windows trap sunlight and heat inside.
Keep a spray bottle handy. Spraying yourself with cool or cold water and then sitting or standing near a fan can help your body evaporate (蒸发) sweat and dissipate (消散) heat through your skin. ____40____ “The more of your body surface areas that you cool, the better off you're going to be,” says Wolf.
A. Drink plenty of water.
B. If you are really hot, take a cold bath or shower.
C. Use fans to keep the air constantly flowing indoors.
D. Go out earlier in the day when it’s cooler or later at night.
E. But workout clothing made from new fabrics is also a good choice.
F. In fact, our perception of heat and cold doesn’t just depend on the temperature.
G. Or maybe you’re the person who’s putting on a sweater when others say it’s too hot.

上文“Maybe you’re one of those people who peel off a sweater when everyone else is complaining that it’s chilly.(也许你是那种,当别人都在抱怨天冷的时候,你反而脱掉毛衣的人)”描述了一种对冷热感受不同的人。空后“The point is, there’s no single temperature that can be pinpointed (明确指出) as comfortable for everyone.(重点是,没有一个单一的温度,能被定义为对所有人都舒适的)”点明没有统一的舒适温度。 G“Or maybe you’re the person who’s putting on a sweater when others say it’s too hot.(或者,你是那种,当别人说天太热的时候,你反而穿上毛衣的人)”与前文的“Maybe you’re...”
上文““What temperature people start to become uncomfortable at is really individual and variable,” says S. Tony Wolf, PhD, assistant professor at the University of Georgia.(佐治亚大学的助理教授 S・托尼・沃尔夫博士说:“人们开始感到不适的温度,其实是因人而异的。”)” 空后“It also relies on things like humidity and air flow.(它还取决于湿度和气流这类因素)”说明影响温度感受的其他因素。 F“In fact, our perception of heat and cold doesn’t just depend on the temperature.(事实上,我们对冷热的感知,不只是取决于温度)”中的“our perception of heat and cold”对应后文的“It”,与后文的“also”形成呼应,符合语境。故选F。
空后““Sweating is how we regulate heat,” says Robert Kenefick, PhD, professor at the University of Massachusetts. “Drinking plain, cool water or fluids with electrolytes (like sports drinks) helps.”(马萨诸塞大学的教授罗伯特・凯尼菲克博士说:“出汗是我们调节体温的方式,喝普通的凉水或者带电解质的液体(比如运动饮料)会有帮助。”)” A“Drink plenty of water.(多喝水)”总领了后文的内容,符合语境。故选A。
上文“Loose clothing allows for better airflow and helps keep you cool.(宽松的衣服能让空气更好地流通,帮你保持凉爽)”介绍了穿宽松衣服的降温方法。 E“But workout clothing made from new fabrics is also a good choice.(但是用新型面料做的运动服也是个不错的选择)”承接前文的穿衣建议,补充了另一种合适的衣物,符合语境。故选E。
上文“Spraying yourself with cool or cold water and then sitting or standing near a fan can help your body evaporate (蒸发) sweat and dissipate (消散) heat through your skin.(往自己身上喷凉水,然后坐在或者站在风扇旁边,能帮你的身体蒸发汗水,通过皮肤散发热量)”介绍了喷水降温的方法。空后““The more of your body surface areas that you cool, the better off you're going to be,” says Wolf.(沃尔夫说:“你冷却的身体表面积越大,你就会越舒服。”)” B“If you are really hot, take a cold bath or shower.(如果你真的很热,洗个冷水澡或者冲个凉)”承接前文的降温方法,同时呼应后文的冷却身体表面积的内容,符合语境。

directed与空处并列的非谓语动词作定语,修饰the third sequel of the series, star和前面的名词the third sequel of the series之间是主动关系,所以用现在分词starring作后置定语。
故填but。
describe sth. as sth. 故填as。
whether...or... 故填Whether。
根据时间状语during the 2019 and 2024 Spring Festival seasons可知,事情发生在过去,所以应该用一般过去时,主语The first two installments of the series和动词release之间是被动关系,所以应该用一般过去时的被动语态,主语为复数,be动词用were。故填were released。
故填a。
It was 1 a.m. on Christmas morning, but for Marisa Shumaker, it was still Christmas Eve. Like so many other parents, she had holiday magic to make.
For weeks, her 4-year-old daughter, Aubree, had been asking for one thing only for Christmas: a “real piano keyboard”, not just some small one made for little kids. Now that Aubree was asleep, Shumaker pulled the box from its hiding spot in their home in Bel Air, Maryland, ready to unveil the 61-key keyboard with full-size keys — perfect for beginners like Aubree. Shumaker figured she’d assemble the stand and bench, and set it all up so it would be ready to play when Aubree woke up and discovered her surprise. But when she opened the box, only the stand and bench were inside. No keyboard.
Panic overtook her as she realized what she hadn’t noticed before: The keyboard was sold separately.
The night before, mother and daughter had watched the movie The Santa Clause. At one point, two of the main characters talk about the gifts they desperately wanted when they were kids but never received, which made them doubt the existence of Santa.
“That scene immediately played in my mind,” says Shumaker. She recalled how happy she was as a little girl, about Aubree’s age, when she got her first guitar as a gift. What would Aubree think when she came downstairs and found only a bench and stand — no keyboard?
There must be some way to fix this, she thought. Maybe an online retailer could deliver a keyboard by morning. Maybe she could creep out to a store, if one was still open. She looked into both options, but no luck. Now desperate, Shumaker posted in a neighborhood Facebook group: “I’m about to cry,” she wrote, explaining the situation.
Andy Spencer, who lives 5 miles from Shumaker, was crawling into bed just before 2 a.m. when he saw her plea. He thought of the keyboard his wife had gotten for her daughter, Hailey, two years earlier. They still had it, and honestly, Hailey had hardly ever played it.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
Spencer got out of bed and headed down the hall to see whether Hailey was awake.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The two messaged back and forth, agreeing to meet at a grocery store across the street from Shumaker’s home.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Spencer got out of bed and headed down the hall to see whether Hailey was awake. Seeing the soft glow beneath her door, he gently knocked, his heart pounding with both concern and hope. Hailey was not only awake — she listened with growing excitement as he explained Shumaker’s desperate situation. Hardly had Spencer finished his story when Hailey agreed to give her almost new keyboard, whose 61 full-size keys would fit perfectly on Aubree’s stand. With her enthusiastic consent, Spencer quickly composed a message. Fingers trembling with anticipation, he wrote, “Where do you live? We have a smaller keyboard that we could part with.” Reading the message, Shumaker couldn’t believe how quickly her luck had turned.
The two messaged back and forth, agreeing to meet at a grocery store across the street from Shumaker’s home. Within minutes, the Spencers arrived in the parking lot with the keyboard carefully wrapped and Hailey’s face glowing with anticipation. For Shumaker, relief and gratitude shone in her eyes when she saw the keyboard. Never had she expected that strangers would respond so swiftly and generously. With the instrument gently loaded into Shumaker’s car, a sense of warmth settled over everyone. All the Spencers wanted was a simple photo of a happy Aubree on Christmas morning. And when Christmas finally broke, Aubree’s delighted laughter filled the room as she discovered the surprise, her joy shining brighter than the Christmas tree itself.

Beat the heat — How to stay cool when temperatures soar
Maybe you’re one of those people who peel off a sweater when everyone else is complaining that it’s chilly. ____36____ The point is, there’s no single temperature that can be pinpointed (明确指出) as comfortable for everyone.
“What temperature people start to become uncomfortable at is really individual and variable,” says S.
