Is a teenage boy more likely to grow up working with children as a teacher or with engines asa
mechanic?Smart money bets on the latter, and that would still hold true even if you switch upthe
ouryordecade throughout the 20th cetury. But why? What are the factors that contribute to this
seemingly stereotypical outcome?
You might think that social forces-discrimination,gender roles,etc.-significantly shape these
outcomes, but research shows that men and women's occupational pursuits and interests have not
changed much over the past centry, even as social norms(社会规范)decidedly have.Boys and girls
tend to pursue jobs dealing with things and people respectively. And,perhaps this preference for
sex-typical jobs tends to increase when their country offers more econoic and political empowerment
for women一a phenomenon called the“gender-equality paradox(悖论),”
A recent study noted that with fewer economic worries, greater national wealth might enable more
students to pursue jobs to which they are naturally drawn."Individual students in wealthy nations with
strong social safety nets might choose more according to biologically influenced occupational interests
than political ideals,"the study stated.Social factors may indeed play a role in determining which jobs
young men and women are interested in,but biology seems to be a considerable force driving these
outcomes. From a policy perspective, that means that interventions()designed to bring more
women into fields like STEM might need to be readjusted.
From my perspective,it is worth considering whether such interventions are proper in the first
place. After all,if we want greater national wealth and gender equality, and these two things seem to
push people toward sex-typical jobs, then why not let the chips fall where they may? Moreover, what
might be good for organizations and businesses is not always the same as what is good for individuals.
28.What does the underlined word"stereotypical"in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Influential.
B.Productive.
C.Appealing.
D.Unchanged.
29.Why does the phenomenon of"gender-equality paradox"occur?
A.Women gain more economic and political support.
B.Boys always pursue careers to do with people.
C.Girls observe the social norms all the time.
D.Men have less access to sex-typical occupations nowadays.
30.What is more likely to determine individuals'occupational interest?
5
A.Social safety nets.
B.Political ideals.
C.Biological factors.
D.Readjusted interventions.
31.What c weea from the last paragraph?
A.Gderqis havingerimpacton sex-typcali
B.Individuals should purs their favored jobs regardless of the nio.
C.More proper policies should be made to intervene in women'sreer options.
D.Organizations and businesses have benefited greatly from economic growth.

The numerous bacteria that naturally inhabit the human body seem to help us in many ways. One
group is emerging as particularly beneficial:a type of gut()bacteria known as Bli,which has
made headlines recently because it seems to produce some really remarkable effects. Now,a Chinese
team is spotting another potential benefit of Bli:helping people adapt to high altitudes().Their
findings suggest that providing Blautia could help mountaineers and others perform better in these
challenging environments.
Qing-Peng Kong,a geneticist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and his team recruited 45 men
to move from their homes at 250 meters above sea level to a town at about 3,700 meters.Despite the
thin air,the men ate similar food as they had at home, minimizing the effects of diet changes on their
gut bacteria. After 2 days,Blautia went from being rare to very numerous in their guts.
In the second experiment, the team exposed mice to controlled low-oxygen conditions in the lab
first and then simulated (an altitude of 4,000 meters, while giving Blautia to half of them every
other day.The Blautia-treated mice showed milder response of altitude sickness. This opens the door
into whether altitude sickness might be amenable to treatment through the gut.
The bacteria's effect may also extend to the brain."Its superpower comes from the connection
between the gut and the brain,"says Klepac-Cerak at Wellesley College. The fatty acids it makes are
known to activate receptors on nerves that connect the digestive system, heart and brain.
This could help explain a surprising relationship that Klepac-Cerak reported last year:Kids are more
likely to talk and laugh when they have more Blautia in their guts."There's lots of communication
happening between our brain;we are just beginning to uncover what services bacteria do for us."
Klepac-Cerak notes.
Blaurias apparent superpowers suggest to Kong it could serve as a supplement (that
benefits people regardless of whether they are planning a trip to Tibet. But first,Kong says,he wants to
find out whether Blautia is a"solo"player or has these protective effects only as part of a larger group
of bacteria.
32.What's the newly-found benefit of the study led by a Chinese team?
A.It gets public attention.
B.It introduces an advanced new technology.
C.It makes social media angry.
D.It helps people do better at high altitudes.
6
33.What dowekowesubjts(实验对象)inbothexperme?
A.They moved to high-altitude regions.
B.They received Blautia in their diet.
C.They experienced low-oxygen conditions.
D.They suffered severe altitude sickness.
34.What does the underlined word"amenable"in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Reactive
B.Untreatable
C.Unchangeable
D.Careless
35.How would both Kong and Klepac-Cerak describe Blautias role in human health?
A.double-edged sword.
B.A solo player.
C.A partially-understood influence.
D.An extremely effective solution.

plastic.
38 Even the human body itself is part plastic.Curious to know how plastic I am,I got
tested. The results showed 2.06 nanograms of PFAS in every milliliter of my blood-an"intermediate"
level associated with a potential risk of adverse health effects.
I then consulted Tracey Woodruff of UC San Francisco.People should just do what they can,she
said.In the kitchen, choose glass containers.Elsewhere in the home, replace microfiber towels with
cotton ones.Another point Woodruff made stuck in my head.39
SoI turned my attention to my kids.Sheets and blankets matter because we breathe so close to the

warmth and hope.
The rain was coming down hard outside. Its sound made me fall asleep. At 5 am,I suddenly woke
up and saw water rushing in from under the front door of my house. The water could rise in minutes,
trapping me in the house and causing me to drown.
Hurriedly,I carried essential items and tried the back door.My truck was parked outside the back
door, and this was the quickest way to it.But the back door wouldn't open. The water level must be
higher than I thought.I hurried to the front door. With some efforts,I managed to open it.Now,I just
had to get Lucky.
I turned around,finding she had moved onto the sofa."Come here,Lucky!"I said.But she didn't
move because of fear.About five inches of water covered the floor now.Full of items in my hands,I
decided to first get my truck, put my things in it,then pull up to the front door and carry Lucky out.
"Stay, girl!"Ishouted, closed the front door and stepped into the deep water outside.
Finally,I reached the truck and began driving to the front of the house.Halfway, the rising
floodwater killed the engine.Upset,I jumped out, walking through the water toward the front door to
pick up Lucky.Unfortunately, due to the pressure of the rising water, now I couldn't open the front door.
Lucky was still inside.
