In 2010, while Brad Ryan described his previous adventures hiking and climbing a famous mountain, he learned that his grandmother Joy Ryan had never set eyes on a mountain, which was one of her lifelong regrets. That conversation stayed with him.
A few years later, Brad decided to take a weekend road trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and asked Grandma if she’d like to join him. Thankfully, his grandmother jumped at the chance. At 85, she saw her first mountain, climbed her first mountain and went camping for the first time.
While he knew that the fun might be ruined (毁灭) when he travelled with an elderly person, Brad quickly found that this wasn’t the case. In fact, it was quite the opposite. It made the experience of being in the great outdoors much richer because having to move more slowly meant he was able to appreciate everything in a more meaningful way.
The first trip planted a seed of joy inside Brad that had been missing, and he was excited to see how much Grandma had enjoyed the experience. To keep their adventure going, the pair made a plan to travel to the other 62 US National Parks together.
Such a challenge would be a huge achievement for most hikers, let alone an elderly woman with limited hiking experience, so they decided to take their time with it. It took them nearly eight years to do it. Brad said that the lens (镜头) through which Grandma was seeing the world was very different from most people of his age because she didn’t visit a site thinking, “Well, I’ll be back again,” so there was more presence.
After reaching their final stop, the National Park of American Samoa in the South Pacific, in 2023, they became closer than ever and eventually decided on trying to travel to every continent (大陆) in the world.
4. What is the function of the first paragraph?
A. To sum up the whole story.
B. To show Brad’s love for travelling.
C. To explain Brad and his grandma’s trip reason.
D. To describe the beautiful scenery during adventures.
5. What did Brad worry about at first on his first trip with his grandmother?
A. High cost. B. Less fun. C. Bad weather. D. Poor health.
6. What did Brad think his grandma’s trip was like?
A. She always felt very tired. B. She was close to giving up.
C. She enjoyed it all the time. D. She was too old to go to many places.
7. What was Brad and his grandmother’s next plan?
A. They would travel farther. B. They decided on the National Park.
C. They wanted to have a break. D. They could post their stories online.
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. C 7. A

As a terrible heatwave continues to sweep across China, many people are turning to a quirky method to stay cool at night — hugging a winter melon while they sleep. This strange practice has become popular in provinces such as Shandong, Jiangsu, and Anhui due to its low cost, sustainability (可持续性), and surprising effectiveness.
The idea of using winter melons as a natural coolant (冷却剂) is not new. It actually comes from ancient Chinese tradition. There is even a classical poem titled Xia Ri Bao Gua Mian (which means “Sleeping with a Melon on a Summer Night” that describes this custom. Winter melons have a water content of more than 95%, which allows them to stay cool for hours. In traditional Chinese medicine, the melon’s peel (果皮) is also known for its ability to reduce inner heat.
Health experts like Yang Zufu from the China Rehabilitation Research Center say that holding a winter melon can be a mild and convenient way to lower body temperature. However, people who have weak digestion (消化) or are especially sensitive (敏感的) to cold are advised not to place the melon directly against their skin. Instead, they should wrap it in a towel or put it near their pillow.
Before using the melon, it is important to wash off the fine white fuzzy (绒毛) on its surface to prevent your skin getting red or uncomfortable, but the peel should not be damaged. Although placing the melon near your arms or legs can help you feel cooler, it is not recommended to press it against the stomach. When the melon gets warm, it can be cooled down again with cold water and reused.
In addition to this method, experts suggest other ways to beat the heat, such as wearing loose and breathable clothes, eating cooling foods like melons and sour fruits, improving air flow in rooms during early morning and late evening, and avoiding outdoor exercise during the hottest time of the day.
8. What does the underlined word “quirky” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Traditional. B. Unusual. C. Modern. D. Common.
9. What is the main reason why winter melons can help people cool down?
A. They are cheap and easy to find. B. They can be reused many times.
C. They are recommended by health experts. D. They have a high water content and medicinal peel.
10. What can we infer from the expert’s advice in the passage?
A. The method is only suitable for adults.
B. Winter melons are more effective than air conditioners.
C. Some people should take protective measures when using the method.
D. Everyone can always use this winter-melon method directly without any risk.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards the practice of hugging winter melons?
A. Uncertain. B. Objective. C. Worried. D. Humorous.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. C 11. B

【8题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线单词句中“As a terrible heatwave continues to sweep across China, many people are turning to a quirky method to stay cool at night — hugging a winter melon while they sleep.( 随着可怕的热浪继续席卷中国,许多人开始用一种……方法来保持夜间凉爽:睡觉时抱一个冬瓜。)”以及下文“This strange practice has become popular in provinces such as Shandong, Jiangsu, and Anhui due to its low cost, sustainability (可持续性), and surprising effectiveness.( 这种奇怪的做法因其低成本、可持续性和惊人的效果而在山东、江苏和安徽等省流行起来。)”由此可知,“睡觉时抱冬瓜”并非常见降温方式。这种方法对于现代社会来说是奇特、新奇的。B选项Unusual“不寻常的”符合语境。故选B项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Winter melons have a water content of more than 95%, which allows them to stay cool for hours. In traditional Chinese medicine, the melon’s peel (果皮) is also known for its ability to reduce inner heat.( 冬瓜的含水量超过95%,可以保持凉爽数小时。在传统中医中,瓜皮也以其降内热的能力而闻名。)”可知,冬瓜能帮助人们降温的主要原因是它们有很高的含水量和药用瓜皮。故选D项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“However, people who have weak digestion (消化) or are especially sensitive (敏感的) to cold are advised not to place the melon directly against their skin. Instead, they should wrap it in a towel or put it near their pillow.( 然而,消化能力弱或对寒冷特别敏感的人建议不要将瓜直接贴在皮肤上。相反,他们应该把它包在毛巾里或放在枕头旁边。)”可知,从文章中专家的建议我们能推断出一些人在使用这种方法时应该采取保护措施。故选C项。

A rainforest is an area covered by tall trees with the total high rainfall spreading quite equally through the year and the temperature rarely dipping below 16℃. Rainforests have a great effect on the world environment because they can adjust the climate. Rainforests can take in heat from the sun, and without the forest cover, these areas would reflect more heat into the atmosphere, warming the rest of the world. Losing the rainforests may also influence wind and rainfall patterns, potentially causing certain natural disasters all over the world.
In the past hundred years, humans have begun destroying rainforests in search of three major resources: land for crops, wood for paper and other products, land for raising farm animals. This action affects the environment as a whole. For example, a lot of carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) in the air comes from burning the rainforests. People obviously have a need for the resources we gain from cutting trees but we will suffer much more than we will benefit.
There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, when people cut down trees generally they can only use the land for a year or two. Secondly, cutting large sections of rainforests may provide a good supply of wood right now, but in the long run it actually reduces the world’s wood supply.
Rainforests are often called the world’s drug store. More than 25% of the medicines we use today come from plants in rainforests. However, fewer than 1% of rainforest plants have been examined for their medical value. It is extremely likely that our best chance to cure diseases lies somewhere in the world’s shrinking rainforests.
12. Rainforests can help adjust the climate because they ______.
A. keep the temperature at 16℃. B. have tall trees that block rainwater.
C. reflect more heat into the atmosphere. D. reduce the effect of heat from the sun on the earth.
13. What can we know about destroying rainforests from the text?
A. It increases wood supply. B. It reduces carbon dioxide.
C. It harms the global environment. D. It brings land for long-term farming.
14. What conclusion can we make from the last paragraph?
A. All rainforests plants have medical value. B. Rainforests plants are widely examined.
C. Rainforests have hidden medical value. D. Rainforests provide half of medicines.
15. What might be the best title for the text?
A. The Medical Potential of Rainforests.
B. The Influence of Rainforests on Global Climate.
C. The Destruction of Rainforests for Human Resources.
D. The Importance of Rainforests to the Environment and Medicine.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. C 15. D

【导语】文章主要介绍雨林对调节气候和提供药物的重要作用,以及乱砍滥伐带来的危害。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“Rainforests can take in heat from the sun, and without the forest cover, these areas would reflect more heat into the atmosphere, warming the rest of the world.(雨林可以吸收太阳的热量,如果没有森林覆盖,这些地区会将更多的热量反射到大气中,从而使世界其他地区变暖)”可知,雨林能通过吸收热量来减少太阳热量对地球的影响,从而调节气候。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“This action affects the environment as a whole. For example, a lot of carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) in the air comes from burning the rainforests. People obviously have a need for the resources we gain from cutting trees but we will suffer much more than we will benefit.(这种行为影响到整体环境。例如,空气中大量的二氧化碳来自焚烧雨林。人们显然确实需要我们通过砍伐树木所获得的资源,但我们的损失将会远远大于所得的收益)”可知,破坏雨林会损害全球环境。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“More than 25% of the medicines we use today come from plants in rainforests. However, fewer than 1% of rainforest plants have been examined for their medical value. It is extremely likely that our best chance to cure diseases lies somewhere in the world’s shrinking rainforests.(我们今天使用的药物中,超过25%来自雨林植物。然而,只有不到1%的雨林植物被检测过其药用价值。我们治愈疾病的最佳机会极有可能存在于世界上正在萎缩的雨林中)”可知,雨林具有尚未被完全发掘的巨大药用价值。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。文章前两段主要讲雨林对调节全球气候和环境的重要性,第三段讲砍伐的危害,最后一段讲雨林在医药方面的巨大潜力。D项“雨林对环境和医药的重要性”最能概括全文主旨,适合作为标题。

A Journey of Courage
Tom had always dreamed of climbing mountains. As a child, he would spend hours reading adventure books about explorers who scaled the tallest peaks in the world. He admired their bravery and determination, and he promised himself that one day, he would stand on top of a mountain and look out at the world below.
When Tom turned 18, he decided that it was time to make his dream a reality. He spent months training, hiking through forests and climbing smaller hills to build up his strength and stamina (耐力). He read books on mountaineering, learned how to use climbing gear (装备), and practiced tying knots. His goal was to climb Mount Peakstone, a challenging mountain known for its difficult terrain (地形) and unpredictable weather.
On the day of the climb, Tom felt both excited and nervous. He packed his gear carefully—warm clothes, food, water, and his climbing equipment. As he stood at the base of the mountain, he looked up at the towering peak. It seemed much taller in person than it did in the pictures he had seen. For a moment, doubt crept into his mind. Could he really do this?
But Tom pushed the doubt aside. He had come too far to turn back now. With a deep breath, he began his ascent (攀登). The first part of the climb was relatively easy. The weather was clear, and the path was well- marked. As he climbed higher, the air grew colder, and the wind picked up, but Tom pressed on, determined to reach the top.
About halfway up the mountain, the weather took a sudden turn for the worse. Dark clouds gathered overhead, and snow began to fall heavily. The wind howled, making it difficult to see and even harder to keep his balance. Tom’s heart pounded in his chest. He knew he had to make a decision—should he continue climbing, or should he turn back?

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Tom found shelter behind a large rock and took a moment to think. He had read about this in the mountaineering books: when the weather turns dangerous, it’s often best to stop and wait it out. Cold and a little frightened, Tom thought of calling for rescue for a moment. But Tom was so close to the top and his dream. He thought, if he had quitted this time, he would feel regretful in his later life. He didn’t want to give up now. After a few minutes, he made up his mind. He would continue, but he would be extra cautious.
Step by step, Tom made his way up the mountain, carefully placing his hands and feet on the rock, testing every hold before moving forward. His muscles ached, and the cold cut through his clothes, but he focused on the goal. After what felt like hours, he finally reached the summit. The wind had died down, and the clouds began to clear, revealing a breathtaking view of the world below. Tom stood there, tired and exhausted, but filled with a sense of accomplishment. As he looked out at the vast landscape, he realized that the journey had taught him more than just how to climb a mountain. It had taught him the importance of perseverance, courage, and believing in himself, even when things seemed impossible. The mountain had tested him, but in the end, he proved to himself that he was capable of achieving his dream.

A. Uncertain. B. Objective. C. Worried. D. Humorous.
D
