People often think of the North Pole (北极) and the South Pole as similar frozen (冰冻的) wastelands. They are both places with very cold temperatures and few people live there. However, the North Pole is not much like the South Pole. So what is the real situation there?
The North Pole has no land, only thick ice. Temperatures hardly go above 32°F-water turns into ice at this temperature. Most of the time, it stays below 0℃. In winter, temperatures are usually as low as -30°F.
Although conditions were poor, people tried for many years to reach the North Pole. From 1901 to 1906, Robert Peary tried three times to reach the North Pole, but he didn’t make it. It was not until three years later that he finally succeeded in getting to this environment full of troubles and problems.
There are few things more dangerous than crossing the Arctic (北极) on foot. People who stay there may face many problems: very cold temperatures, sudden storms, and even hunger. Most of the area is uninhabited (无人居住的), so few people can live in such a difficult place.
People might think that with such low temperatures for most of the year, the ice would be thick and hard. However, this is not true in the Arctic. The movement of the ocean water under the ice may cause many different changes on the surface. Sometimes the ice breaks into two opening lanes (道) of water called “leads”. Anyone who falls into a lead can be frozen to death in a few minutes.
1.What’s the usual temperature in winter in the North Pole?
2.When did Robert Peary reach the North Pole?
3.What makes it dangerous to cross the Arctic on foot?
4.Why does the ice in the Arctic break into leads?
5.What does this passage mainly talk about?
The days passed. Dorothy worked very hard in the kitchen. She remembered Uncle Henry and Aunt Em in Kansas. She remembered her friends—the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman. She was very sad and often cried. At night, she went to see the Lion. The Witch (巫婆) didn’t give him anything to eat or drink, so Dorothy took him food and water from the kitchen. Then she lay down next to him, rested her head on his warm body and slept till morning.
The Witch watched Dorothy all the time. She waited for the right moment to take the silver shoes. Dorothy wore them all the time. She loved them. The only time she took them off was when she took a bath. The Witch was afraid of water, so she dared not go near Dorothy while she was bathing.
One day, Dorothy was cleaning the kitchen when she slipped (滑倒) on the wet floor. She fell down and one of the silver shoes came off. The Witch picked it up quickly and put it on.
“Give me back my shoe!” Dorothy shouted.
“No! It’s mine now,” replied the Witch.
“You are bad!” Dorothy cried. “I want my shoe!”
There was a bucket of water near the door. Dorothy picked it up and threw the water at the Witch.
“Aargh!” screamed (尖叫) the Witch. “Water is the end of me!”
She began to disappear right in front of Dorothy’s eyes. Soon, nothing was left on the kitchen floor.
Dorothy quickly took her shoe, put it on and ran outside.
“The Witch is dead!” she cried. The Winkies (温基人), the Witch’s slaves (奴隶), looked at her in surprise. “We’re all free now!” she told them. They cheered loudly, “The bad Witch is dead! We are free! Thank you, Dorothy!”
Dorothy went up to the Lion, took the rope off his neck. He was overjoyed to be free again.

Teenagers often face a roller coaster (过山车) of emotions. One moment they may feel happy, and the next, sad or angry. Why is this? Experts say physical changes during the teenage years play a big role. As bodies grow and brains develop, hormones change quickly. That can cause emotional ups and downs.
It’s common for teenagers to find it hard to control these feelings. For example, 15-year-old Lily once argued with her mother over a small thing-whether to wear a jacket. “I knew she was worried about me catching a cold, but I felt she wanted to control me,” Lily said. “I shouted at her and then felt sorry at once.”
Hiding feelings isn’t a good solution, though many teens do it. “I pretend to be calm in front of my friends, but actually, I’m often nervous about fitting in with them,” said 16-year-old Tom. Experts suggest that recognizing (识别) their emotions is the first step to managing them. Writing diaries or talking to their parents or teachers can help teens express their true feelings.
Another helpful tip is to avoid thinking too much about the past. “If you had a fight with a friend yesterday, don’t let it influence today,” said expert Ms. Lee. “Learn from the experience and move on.” It’s also important to remember that emotions are normal—everyone feels upset sometimes. The key is to stay in control of your feelings.
1.What causes teenagers’ changing emotions?
2.Why did Lily argue with her mother?
3.What do experts suggest teenagers do first to deal with their emotions?
4.How should teenagers treat the past?
5.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?

Growing up is a journey full of lessons and growth. Every person has their own growing-up story, and these stories shape who we are. Here are two stories from Grade 8 students about their growing-up experiences.
Lucas used to be a very selfish boy. He only thought about himself and never cared about others. One day, his little brother fell ill and needed to stay in bed. His mother was very busy taking care of his brother, so she asked Lucas to help with housework. At first, Lucas was unwilling, but when he saw how tired his mother was, he changed his mind. He helped clean the house, wash the dishes and take care of his brother. From this experience, Lucas learned to be kind and responsible. He realized that growing up means thinking about others.
Emma used to be afraid of making mistakes. She always refused to try new things because she was worried about failing. Her art teacher noticed this and asked her to join the school art club. At first, Emma was nervous and made many mistakes. But her teacher and classmates encouraged her to keep trying. Gradually, Emma became more confident and started to enjoy drawing. She learned that making mistakes is part of growing up and that we can learn from our mistakes.
These stories show that growing up is about changing and learning. We all make mistakes and have shortcomings, but as long as we keep trying and learning, we will grow into better people.
1.What kind of boy was Lucas before?
2.Why did Lucas change his mind and help with housework?
3.What was Emma afraid of before?

The Dead Sea’s magical water will keep you floating (漂浮) like a beach ball. Bring a book-you can even read while staying on the water!
The Dead Sea is in the Jordan Rift Valley in southwest Asia. It is about 50 kilometers long and 15 kilometers wide at its widest point. It is about 430 meters below sea level, making it the lowest point on earth’s land.
Yuncheng Salt Lake, also called "China’s Dead Sea”, is in Yuncheng City of Shanxi Province. As China’s oldest saltwater lake, it has a history of over 50 million years. Today, the lake is an important salt production and trade center. It is also a popular tourist place. Visitors come to enjoy its unique beauty and even float in its salty water.
What’s interesting is that the Dead Sea isn't actually a sea. It’s a lake with the salt concentration (含盐量) of more than 30percent, which is much higher than typical seawater. The Dead Sea stays so salty because it gets very little rainfall every year. And the hot weather around the Dead Sea makes the fresh water evaporate (蒸发) quickly. As a result, almost no plants or animals can live there. That’s why it’s called the Dead Sea.
However, don’t let the name or not having any sea life scare you. Even if you fall into the Dead Sea and can't swim, you won’t die. The high concentration of salt in the Dead Sea allows anyone to float well. In fact, many people visit the Dead Sea during the sunny months from April to October. However, July and August are less popular because they are the hottest months. If you walk along the shore, you will likely see many people floating in the water, reading books or magazines.
1.Where is the Dead Sea?
2.What is interesting about the Dead Sea?
3.Why is the Dead Sea so salty?
4.What can people do if they take a visit to Yuncheng Salt Lake?
Hello, I’m Sarah. I’m 14 years old and I live in a small town in Canada. My favourite free-time activity is gardening. I love spending time in my garden, taking care of my plants.
I started gardening when I was seven. My grandmother gave me some sunflower seeds and taught me how to plant them. I watered them every day and watched them grow. When the sunflowers finally bloomed (开花), I was so happy! From that moment, I fell in love with gardening.
Now I have a small garden behind my house. I grow all kinds of flowers—roses, tulips, and sunflowers. I also grow some vegetables like tomatoes and carrots. I work in my garden every weekend. Sometimes I go there after school too, if the weather is nice.
Why do I love gardening? First, it helps me relax. When I’m in the garden, I forget about my homework and just enjoy the peace and quiet. Second, I love watching things grow. It’s amazing to see a tiny seed become a beautiful flower.
My dream is to have a big garden one day with many different plants. I want to share my flowers and vegetables with my family and friends.

4.What can people do if they take a visit to Yuncheng Salt Lake?
【答案】1.It is in the Jordan Rift Valley in southwest Asia. 2.It has a salt concentration of more than 30 percent and people can float on it easily. 3.Because it gets very little rainfall every year and the hot weather makes the fresh water evaporate quickly. 4.They can enjoy its unique beauty and float in its salty water.
