During an ocean trip off Mexico’s Baja California coast, a group of free divers (潜水员) and photographers found a mobula ray (蝠鲼) caught in a rope more than 30 feet underwater. The rope, which was tied to shark fishermen’s buoys (浮标), was wound around the ray’s body and fins (鳍).
Andre Smits, an underwater photographer, was part of the group that day. “We hadn’t seen any wildlife up to that point,” he said, “so we headed to one of the buoys and jumped in to check the rope. What we saw was heartbreaking. The ray struggled to get free but failed.”
The team quickly decided to free the ray. They carefully approached the animal, finding the rope wound around almost every part of the ray. One diver cut the rope below the ray while others gently held its fins. The rope was so sharp that it nearly cut both the rescuers and the animal several times. “While we were doing this whole rescue, three sharks were swimming around, and they were ready to attack if the ray seemed to be dying,” Smits said. Finally, with the last piece of rope removed, the ray was free.
The ray swam away. Unexpectedly, she returned soon. She swam around the divers in a slow and smooth circle. For several quiet minutes, the ray moved in a gentle and silent dance of thanks. There was no fear, only a peaceful and powerful connection. The divers said, “It was unbelievable. She almost gave us a thankful hug.”
This experience made the divers aware that pollution in the ocean remains serious. They decided to take action by shooting videos and using the power of social media to call on more people to care about the ocean. As one member said, “Every life is important. We must work together to protect our ocean.”
24. What can be learned about the divers?
A. They discovered a trapped ray. B. They relocated fishermen’ s buoys.
C. They searched for injured animals. D. They were almost attacked by sharks.
25. Which of the following best describes the rescue?
A. Quick. B. Amazing. C. Challenging. D. Professional.
26. What surprised the divers?
A. The ray danced in a graceful way. B. The pollution in the ocean was serious.
C. The ray came back to show its gratitude. D. The sharks were present during the rescue.
27. What will the divers plan to do next?
A. Ask the public to shoot ocean videos. B. Conduct research on ocean pollution.
C. Discover the variety of life in the ocean. D. Raise public awareness of ocean protection.
【答案】24. A 25. C 26. C 27. D

On the dry grasslands of Florida, there is a tiny brown bird known as the Florida grasshopper sparrow (蚱蜢雀). It faces threats from floods, cattle and fire ants. Worse still, humans have increasingly cleared the dry grasslands to make way for development and agriculture. “So, along with the loss of dry grasslands, we also lost a lot of sparrows,” says Fabiola “Fabby” Baeza-Tarin, a senior conservation ecologist from a company known as Common Ground Ecology.
Many of the sparrows’ problems arise from the fact that, as the birds adapted to a life on the open grasslands, they nest (筑巢) on the ground. That puts the tiny birds within reach of native predators (捕食者) like snakes, human-related threats and floods.
To protect the nests from flooding, the team, which includes the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the Avon Park Air Force Range, the Archbold Biological Station, Common Ground Ecology, and White Oak Conservation, as well as private landowners, clears the soil and plants around the nests. Then, they add more soil under the nest to lift the whole area 6 to 8 inches higher.
Perhaps the largest source of hope for the brown birds comes from a relatively recent effort. Since 2019, experts have raised more than 1,000 birds in captivity (圈养) and successfully set them free in the wild at two sites, says Baeza-Tarin. What’s more, both sites — Avon Park and Three Lakes Wildlife Management Area — have seen an increase in their wild sparrow populations.
Florida’s dry grasslands also support countless species — plants and animals that also benefit from sparrow protections. “The Florida grasshopper sparrow may seem very small, but the bird’s survival is directly tied to the health of the habitat,” says Baeza-Tarin. “If this bird doesn’t do well, there will be something wrong.”
28. What mainly causes Florida grasshopper sparrows to face many threats?
A. Florida’s dry climate. B. Their nesting habits.
C. Attacks from other species. D. The drop in their numbers.
29. Why does the author mention Avon Park and Three Lakes Wildlife Management Area?
A. To compare different protection strategies. B. To stress the challenges sparrows still face.
C. To tell us the native habitats of the sparrows. D. To show the protection measures are working.
30. What does Baeza-Tarin stress in the last paragraph?

【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Many of the sparrows’ problems arise from the fact that, as the birds adapted to a life on the open grasslands, they nest (筑巢) on the ground.(许多麻雀的生存问题源于这样一个事实:随着这些鸟类适应了在开阔草原上的生活,它们开始在地面筑巢)”可知,导致佛罗里达蚱蜢雀面临诸多威胁的主要原因是它们的筑巢习惯。
【29题详解】

【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“The Florida grasshopper sparrow may seem very small, but the bird’s survival is directly tied to the health of the habitat(佛罗里达蚱蜢雀看起来体型很小,但这种鸟的生存状况与其栖息地的健康状况息息相关)”可知,贝萨-塔林在最后一段中强调了雀鸟是该栖息地健康状况的重要标志。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“On the dry grasslands of Florida, there is a tiny brown bird known as the Florida grasshopper sparrow (蚱蜢雀). It faces threats from floods, cattle and fire ants. Worse still, humans have increasingly cleared the dry grasslands to make way for development and agriculture.(在佛罗里达州的干燥草原上,有一种名为“佛罗里达蚱蜢雀”的小棕色鸟类。它面临着洪水、牛群和火蚁的威胁。更糟糕的是,人类为了发展和农业建设,越来越多地开垦这些干燥的草原)”结合文章主要说明了佛罗里达蚱蜢雀因草地减少、地面筑巢面临多重威胁,人们垫高鸟巢、圈养放归,种群数量回升,它更是当地栖息地生态健康的重要风向标。可知,C选项“保护佛罗里达蚱蜢雀”最符合文章标题。
D
It’s hard to stop after eating a single potato chip. However, the popular, deep-fried (油炸的), salty snack has too many unhealthy fats, oils, and other unwanted ingredients (成分) that can cause numerous health problems. Sadly, those are also the tastes that humans naturally like most.
After decades of experimentation, there still isn’t another food that provides that perfect yet still nutritious (有营养的) taste. Even if you cook potatoes in the oven instead of frying, the cooking heat often still reduces the food’s overall nutritional value. According to Cornell University food scientist Chang Chen, however, treating beets (甜菜根) with a technique called microwave vacuum drying (MVD) might be the solution snack lovers have been waiting for. “We wanted to produce a healthy snack from whole vegetables, with all-natural ingredients and high fiber (纤维),” he explained.
Chen and his colleagues detailed their approach in a study published in the journal Innovative Food Science and Emerging Technologies. MVD removes water from vegetables, much like frying or cooking them in the oven, but more quickly and at a lower temperature. These factors together preserve nutrients that would normally deteriorate during long drying processes.
While potatoes are the go-to choice for such snacks, beets are far more suitable. In addition to being a great fiber source, they’re rich in nutrients like vitamin C, manganese, potassium, and iron. If you could replace potatoes with beets and still keep the same great taste, you wouldn’t only replace traditional chips — you could improve them. And the team believes they have achieved that.
Chen hopes MVD will benefit not only beets but also other vegetables like butternut squash and traditional potatoes. “In the future, that’s what we are going to do. And we’ve hired a new student to work on applying it to apples,” Chen added.
32. What is the main problem with traditional potato chips?
A. They lose nutrients after being processed. B. They are high in unhealthy ingredients.
C. They are cooked in the wrong way. D. They can lead to addiction.
33. What does the underlined word “deteriorate” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Lose value. B. Increase rapidly. C. Function slowly. D. Remain unchanged.
34. Why are beets better for making chips?
A. They taste natural. B. They are richer in nutrients.
C. They have more fiber. D. They are similar to potatoes.
35. What is Chen’s expectation of MVD technology?
A. Making drying vegetables easier. B. Focusing on improving potato chips.
C. Replacing traditional frying methods. D. Widening its application to more produce.
【答案】32. B 33. A 34. B 35. D
【解析】
【导语】主要说明了传统薯片含大量不健康成分,微波真空干燥技术可低温锁营养。甜菜比土豆更适合做健康薯片,研究者还计划将该技术应用到更多蔬果上。
【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“However, the popular, deep-fried (油炸的), salty snack has too many unhealthy fats, oils, and other unwanted ingredients (成分) that can cause numerous health problems.(然而,这种广受欢迎的油炸咸味小吃含有过多不健康的脂肪、油脂以及其他有害成分,可能会引发诸多健康问题)”可知,传统薯片的主要问题是含有大量不健康的成分。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“MVD removes water from vegetables, much like frying or cooking them in the oven, but more quickly and at a lower temperature.(MVD技术能从蔬菜中去除水分,其过程类似于将蔬菜油炸或在烤箱中烘烤,但速度更快,且温度更低)”以及后文“during long drying processes(在长时间干燥过程中)”可知,MVD低温快速脱水,能保留营养;通常情况下长时间干燥会让营养流失、价值降低,与MVD技术形成对比,故划线词意思是“价值下降”。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“While potatoes are the go-to choice for such snacks, beets are far more suitable. In addition to being a great fiber source, they’re rich in nutrients like vitamin C, manganese, potassium, and iron.(虽然土豆是这类零食的常见选择,但甜菜则更为合适。除了是优质的纤维来源外,它们还富含维生素C、锰、钾和铁等营养成分)”可知,甜菜更适合用来制作薯片是因为它们的营养成分更丰富。
【35题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Chen hopes MVD will benefit not only beets but also other vegetables like butternut squash and traditional potatoes. “In the future, that’s what we are going to do. And we’ve hired a new student to work on applying it to apples,” Chen added.(陈希望微波真空干燥技术不仅能应用于甜菜,还能适用于其他蔬菜,比如南瓜和传统土豆。他补充道:“未来我们会继续推进这项技术的应用。而且我们还新招了一名学生专门负责将其应用于苹果的处理上。”)”可知,陈期望MVD技术将其应用范围扩大到更多的产品上。

A. The importance of the sparrow has just been recognized.
B. The health of the habitat has drawn people’s attention.
C. The sparrow is a key sign of the habitat’s health.
D. The habitat is attracting more and more species.
31. What could be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Success of Wildlife Protection B. Saving the Dry Grasslands of Florida
C. Saving the Florida Grasshopper Sparrow D. The Importance of Grasslands for Sparrows
