W: Great. So, it’s not just about campus. It also makes the community cleaner and more beautiful.

B. Little communication with her daughter.
C. Heavy morning traffic during workdays.

A. Writing short notes. B. Calling her during lunch. C. Leaving gifts by her plate.
20. What has Linda’s effort brought?
A. A lighter morning schedule.
B. A closer mother-daughter relationship.
C. A local activity about sharing family stories.
B 19. A 20. B
M: Good evening, everyone. In today’s The Starlight Suggestion Box, I’d like to share a little thing that my friend Linda started doing at home, which has made a big difference in her family. Like many working parents, Linda leaves for work early before her daughter wakes up. She used to just leave her breakfast on the table, but they hardly had any real connection during the week. One day, Linda decided to write her daughter a short message on a post-it note and put it beside her food. It was something simple, like “have fun in science class” or “good luck with your test”. At first Linda didn’t expect much of it, but one morning Linda found a reply note from her daughter, “Thanks, mum, I’ll do my best”. It made Linda’s day. Since then, they’ve written notes to each other almost every morning. Linda now feels more connected with her daughter, even if they’re not talking face to face. Their story has impressed me a lot. I think such small actions of real communication should be valued in daily life.

Alaa el-Habashu was shopping for food when he came across a dilapidated (破旧的) 17th-century house being used as a butcher’s shop in the historic Cairo neighbourhood of al-Darb al-Ahmai.
“I was surprised by the beauty”, the U. S.-trained architect said of the house. Built of brick and stone, it has a large courtyard and a number of rooms with beautifully painted wooden ceilings. And be struck up, a friendship with the butcher. who owned the building, and received a call from him several years later saying a developer wanted to buy it and pull it down.
Determined to save the building, el-Habashi bought it in 2009.Then he spent ten years restoring the house which he named Bayt Yakan and tried to turn it into a community space.
Today, its beautifully restored courtyard, with lovely flowers growing under the wooden latticed (装有格栅的) windows, hosts many locally led community activities promoting heritage preservation.
Such courtyards played “a key social and economic role” as community centers, el-Habashi said, a role he worked hard to revive.
E-Habashi said there were once around 600 historic houses with similar courtyards — all built facing northwest to catch the cool wind — but just 24 are protected as heritage sites. “As for the rest of them, those that are still standing, who knows what state they are in?” he said. “Every day, another one gets pulled down. The loss of such heritage would be irreparable.”
Public space is becoming less common in crowded Old Cairo, often covered in dangerous air pollution from traffic-packed streets, and affected by increasingly hot summers due to global warming.
“There are very few places where people can come together, away from small apartments and crowded streets,” said el-Habashi. “I hope the old houses can help solve modern problems. They can bring some peace to the neighbourhood. I would love for these houses to become your local parks, where women can bring their kids and sit in the garden.”
24. What did el-Habashi find in al-Darb al-Ahmar area?
A. An empty food store. B. An old friend.
C. A beautiful historic house. D. A U. S.-trained architect.
25. What did el-Habashi do to Bayt Yakan?
A. He rented it out. B. He sold it to a developer.
C. He turned it into a butcher’s shop. D. He spent a lot of time repairing it.
26. What do the numbers in paragraph 6 show?
A. Many people in this area do not have a house to live in.
B. Some community centres are not doing their role properly.
C. Preservation of local historic houses is far from satisfactory.
D. There are many heritage preservation activities led by local people.
27. What does el-Habashi expect of Bayt Yakan?
A. It can be moved out of crowded Old Cairo.
B. It can take the place of apartments for people to live in.
C. It can be a place for people to come together and find peace.
D. It can draw attention to traffic pollution and rising temperatures.
C 25. D 26. C 27. C
根据第一段“Alaa el-Habashu was shopping for food when he came across a dilapidated (破旧的) 17th-century house being used as a butcher’s shop in the historic Cairo neighbourhood of al-Darb al-Ahmai. (Alaa el-Habashu在购买食物时,在开罗历史悠久的al-Darb al-Ahmai街区,发现了一座被用作肉铺的、破旧的17世纪房屋)”和第二段中“‘I was surprised by the beauty’, the U. S.-trained architect said of the house.(“我被它的美惊呆了,”这位在美国受训的建筑师这样评价这座房子)”可知,el-Habashi在开罗老城的al-Darb al-Ahmar区域发现了一座美丽且有历史意义的房子。
根据第三段“Determined to save the building, el-Habashi bought it in 2009. Then he spent ten years restoring the house which he named Bayt Yakan and tried to turn it into a community space.(决心拯救这座建筑,el-Habashi在2009年买下了它。然后他花了十年时间修复这座他命名为Bayt Yakan的房子,并试图将其变成一个社区空间)”可知,el-Habashi对Bayt Yakan房子进行了长时间的修复。故选D项。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段“E-Habashi said there were once around 600 historic houses with similar courtyards — all built facing northwest to catch the cool wind — but just 24 are protected as heritage sites. ‘As for the rest of them, those that are still standing, who knows what state they are in?’ he said. ‘Every day, another one gets pulled down. The loss of such heritage would be irreparable.’(E-Habashi说,这里曾经有大约600座带有类似庭院的历史建筑,它们都是朝西北建造的,以捕捉凉爽的风,但只有24座被保护为遗产地。“至于其余那些仍然矗立的,谁知道它们现在处于什么状态?”他说。“每天都有一座被拆除。这样的遗产损失将是无法弥补的。”)”可知,第六段中的数字表明在600座历史建筑中,只有24座得到保护,说明当地历史建筑的保护远不能令人满意。故选C项。
【27题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中el-Habashi的话“I hope the old houses can help solve modern problems. They can bring some peace to the neighbourhood. I would love for these houses to become your local parks, where women can bring their kids and sit in the garden.(我希望老房子可以帮助解决现代问题。他们可以给周边地区带来一些安宁。我希望这些房子能成为你们当地的公园,妇女们可以带着孩子坐在花园里)”可知,el-Habashi希望Bayt Yakan成为社区居民聚集并享受安宁的场所,能成为人们聚集在一起寻找宁静的地方。故选C项。
C
On October 4, a wildfire tore through a large area of Rapa Nui National Park on Chile’s Easter Island. The fire caused serious damage to several of the large, ancient stone statues that the island is famous for.
Easter Island is home to about 900 large stone statues called “moai”, which are carved stone statues with extremely large heads. The large statues were created over 500 years ago by the people known as the Rapa Nui people. Hundreds of moai are located near the Rano Raraku volcano, inside Rapa Nui National Park. The area has been named by the United Nations as an area that’s important to protect. Sadly, that’s also where the fire was most intense (强烈的).
The wildfire spread quickly through the Rapa Nui National Park. Park workers and firefighters worked for hours to control the fire. But the fire spread easily through the grassland around the area. It wasn’t until late the next day that the fire was brought under control. The park said it didn’t have enough volunteers to fight the fire more quickly.
The fire has burned as much as 1 square kilometre of land, mainly centred around the Rano Raraks volcano. There are 386 moai in and around Rano Raraku. It’s clear that the fire has damaged some of these moai. Ariki Tepano leads the group in charge of taking care of the park. He says, “The moai are totally blackened and you can see the effect of the fire upon them.”
Chile’s government says the stones would have become large as they were heated by the fire, and then shrunk again when the temperature dropped. This process weakens the stones and can cause cracks. The damage caused by the fire can’t be undone.
“All the fires on Rapa Nui are caused by human beings,” Ariki Tepano said. He points out the island needs more government support to be able to deal with situations like this one.
28. What is the purpose of Paragraph 2?
A. To point out the value of moai. B. To show the seriousness of the fire.
C. To stress the efforts in protecting the moai. D. To add some background information.
29. What can we learn about the fire?
A. It was not put out in time. B. It first started on the grassland.
C. Somebody set the fire on purpose. D. No volunteers helped control the fire.
30. What does the underlined word “shrunk” in Paragraph 5 most probably mean?
A. Become hot B. Got small. C. Grown big. D. Turned black.
31. What is mainly talked about in the text?
A. Firefighters worked hard to control the fire.
B. Fire damaged famous statues on Easter Island.
C. Stone statues were totally destroyed in the fire.
D. A wildfire tore through the entire Rapa Nui National Park.
D 29. A 30. B 31. B
根据第二段中“Easter Island is home to about 900 large stone statues called “moai”, which are carved stone statues with extremely large heads. The large statues were created over 500 years ago by the people known as the Rapa Nui people. Hundreds of moai are located near the Rano Raraku volcano, inside Rapa Nui National Park. The area has been named by the United Nations as an area that’s important to protect. Sadly, that’s also where the fire was most intense
根据第三段中“The wildfire spread quickly through the Rapa Nui National Park. Park workers and firefighters worked for hours to control the fire. But the fire spread easily through the grassland around the area. It wasn’t until late the next day that the fire was brought under control. The park said it didn’t have enough volunteers to fight the fire more quickly.(野火迅速蔓延至拉帕努伊国家公园。公园工作人员和消防员连续数小时奋战以控制火势,但火灾在周边草原地区极易扩散。直到第二天深夜,火势才被成功控制。公园方面表示,当时没有足够的志愿者能更快地扑救火灾)”可知,从起火到火势得到控制经历了较长时间,说明火没有及时被扑灭。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段中“Chile’s government says the stones would have become large as they were heated by the fire, and then shrunk again when the temperature dropped. This process weakens the stones and can cause cracks.(智利政府表示,这些石头在被火加热时会膨胀,然后在冷却时又会shrunk。这个过程会削弱石头并导致裂缝)”和常识可知,石头加热时膨胀,冷却时与之对应的应该是体积变小。所以“shrunk”意思是“变小”,与“Got small”同义。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段中“On October 4, a wildfire tore through a large area of Rapa Nui National Park on Chile’s Easter Island. The fire caused serious damage to several of the large, ancient stone statues that the island is famous for.(10月4日,一场野火席卷了智利复活节岛拉帕努伊国家公园的大片区域,对该岛著名的几座大型古老石像造成了严重破坏)”可知,本文主要讲述了野火对复活节岛著名石像造成了破坏。
D
Even with an injured leg, a tall, grey crowned crane walks proudly through a bird shelter in the Rwandan capital, Kigali. The shelter — called Umusambi Village — has rescued more than 200 cranes from captivity. Olivier Nsengimana founded the Umusambi Village in 2015 and runs it together with the government. Umusambi means “grey crowned crane” in the Kinyarwanda language. In just four years, the organization has helped to increase the population of these endangered birds from 487 to 881.
“Before this work began, local communities were hunting or capturing the birds to sell,” said veterinarian Nsengimana. Nsengimana recently explained why this was possibly happening. In Rwanda, the bird is often a symbol of high social position and wealth. So, they are often raised in private homes or hotels.
“In fact, six years ago,” he said, “there were more cranes living in captivity in hotels and homes than in the wild.” Nsengimana added that poverty and a lack of awareness in the local communities led them to catch and sell the birds illegally. He said raising awareness of their endangered position is helping to protect the birds.
For Nsengimana, his own love of the bird goes back to his childhood. He grew up in a village filled with grey crowned cranes. They not only woke up people in the morning, but they also provided entertainment.
Some of the rescued birds are brought to the village after being injured by illegal hunters. Others come from homes where their owners broke their legs or cut their wings to prevent them from flying away.
At Umusambi Village, the cranes are able to recover. When they are healthy enough to survive in their natural environment, Nsengimana releases them in a protected forest. However, the cranes are still endangered by illegal hunting and by the destruction of their natural environment. “This is happening not only in Rwanda,” he said, “Cranes are endangered in many other parts of the world, including North America.”
32. What happened to the birds before Nsengimana took action?
A. They lost their homes. B. They were kept as pets.
C. They were used to tell time. D. They were hunted for meat.
33. What were the birds like before they were rescued?
A. They were hurt by humans. B. They were all raised at homes.
C. They were protected in the wild. D. They were in good condition.
34. Where will these rescued birds end up after recovery?
A. Staying in the shelter forever. B. Keeping the locals company.
C. Being kept in public parks. D. Living in the wild.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. We should remind people to protect endangered birds
B. Birds become the symbol of wealth in Rwanda
C. A man saves endangered birds in Rwanda
D. Birds are part of people’s lives in Rwanda
B 33. A 34. D 35. C

根据原文第五段 “Some of the rescued birds are brought to the village after being injured by illegal hunters. Others come from homes where their owners broke their legs or cut their wings to prevent them from flying away.(一些获救的鸟儿遭到非法猎人伤害后被送到这里,还有一些鸟儿来自普通人家,主人为了防止它们飞走,弄断了它们的腿、剪断了它们的翅膀。)”

A. Many people in this area do not have a house to live in.
