Chicago-based Jim Bachor is an expert in fixing up poholes (坑洼) on the streets by filling them up with his beautiful and strong mosaics (马赛克).
In fact, Bachor’s career as a pohole artist began with a trip to the ancient city of Pompeii in Italy, where he learned mosaic could remain for a long time, standing the test of time. The tour guide pointed at a 2,000-year-old artwork and said that although it had gone through so many years, the marble and glass pieces had not fadeD.The realization of the artwork’s staying power blew Bachor away. A few months later he was in Italy learning the secrets of ancient mosaic art and he pursued it as a hobby for a few years.
In May of 2013 he got the idea of applying his skill to fixing an annoying pohole in his neighborhood. Bachor said. “There was a long-standing pohole right outside our house, which the city repeatedly filled with concrete, yet it kept reappearing.” So, what I did was that I created a special piece of art for that pohole.”
However, creating pohole mosaics was quite different from doing them in the comfort of his own studio. For instance, it was challenging to protect them for a few hours before they became firm. One day, while he accompanied his sons to their soccer practice, the training cones (锥桶) inspired him. Jim Bachor placed them around the pohole mosaics to act as temporary traffic markers, guiding traffic around them.
Bachor started doing pohole mosaics in his neighborhood with many of his neighbors coming to help him, and as his work started getting more attention, he even did some projects in other major cities.
24.What inspired Jim Bachor to be a pohole mosaic artist?
A.The secrets of creating mosaic. B.The beauty of Pompeii’s artworks.
C.Pompeii mosaics’ long-lasting capacity. D.Suggestions from Pompeii’s tour guide.
25.Why did Bachor started his pohole mosaic art in 2013?
A.To fulfill a task from the city. B.To fix a recurring pohole issue.
C.To show up his artistic skills. D.To raise people’s awareness of art.
26.How did Jim Bachor protect his pohole mosaics from damage?
A.He asked his sons to help him. B.He used soccer training cones.
C.He hired workers to direct traffic. D.He applied a quick-drying material.
27.What can we learn from Jim Bachor’s story?
A.Art can solve practical issues. B.Art needs to be passed down.
C.Creativity is the key to success. D.Ancient artworks are the most precious.

“Can you finish the work by the end of the day?” This question might cause anxiety for many employees. However, recent research indicates that shorter deadlines can actually help some individuals to complete tasks more efficiently and perceive their workload as less frightening.
In a study focused on retirement planning, volunteers completed a brief online survey under two different deadline conditions. One group had seven days to finish the survey, while the other was given 14 days. The researchers discovered that those facing the longer deadline often viewed the task as more difficult. Although participants with the extended deadline initially invested more time and resources, they were also more likely to procrastinate (拖延) and less likely to complete the assignment compared to those with shorter deadlines.
Recognizing that people frequently deal with multiple deadlines, researchers explored how individuals manage various tasks at the same time. The findings found a mental tendency: individuals often delay important tasks in favor of urgent but less significant ones. For example, many delay routine medical check-ups — crucial for health — in favor of rushing to a store for a limited-time sale. This occurs because important tasks feel more complex and distant, while urgent tasks provide immediate satisfaction.
These patterns have significant results for managers and others involved in setting deadlines. Understanding these mental processes can help find strategies to enhance task completion rates. Short deadlines for urgent tasks tend to draw attention more effectively, leading to higher completion rates and reduced procrastination. On the other hand, longer deadlines can lead to excessive careful thought or distraction, resulting in incomplete work.
However, it’s essential to recognize that longer deadlines may still be necessary for complex tasks, particularly when external factors, such as resource availability or cooperation, require additional time for proper completion. In such cases, a balanced approach is crucial: setting realistic deadlines that account for both urgency and complexity can lead to improved outcomes. By recognizing the minor differences of human motivation, individuals and organizations can develop effective strategies for task management.
28.According to recent research, what may shorter deadlines bring about?
A.Increased stress. B.Reduced workload.
C.Higher efficiency. D.Slower completion.
29.Why do people tend to delay important tasks for urgent ones?
A.Urgent tasks offer instant rewards. B.Urgent tasks are more complicated.
C.Important tasks are less challenging. D.Important tasks needs multi-tasking.
30.How should managers set proper deadlines to improve outcome?
A.Set all tasks with shorter deadlines. B.Prioritize resources and cooperation.
C.Extend deadlines for significant tasks. D.Balance task urgency and complexity.
31.What can be the best title for the text?
A.The Role of Urgency in Task Completion B.Strategies for Managing Various Deadlines
C.The Power of Deadlines in Task Management D.Influences of Procrastination on Work Quality
D
Nile crocodiles are uniquely sensitive to the cries of painful primate (灵长类) babies, according to a new study — and the more anxious the cry, the more interested they become. To make the find, Nicolas Grimault, a scientist at the University of Lyon, and his colleagues visited a zoo in Morocco, which houses more than 300 Nile crocodiles. The researchers set up loudspeakers alongside four ponds where, at each, as many as 25 crocodiles sunbathed on red rocks. The speakers played a series of cries expressing varying levels of pain from primate babies. The cries were recorded in different situations to find out which aspects of the voices interest the crocs most.
Many of the crocs, male and female, responded to the cries by suddenly turning their heads, seeking out the source of the sound, rapidly approaching the loudspeaker and sometimes even biting it. One individual even showed protective behavior by positioning in front of the speaker as if to defend it from others. Interestingly, their response depended on the characteristics of the cries they heard: crocs were more likely to react to recordings with acoustic (声音的) features closely related to very upset babies, such as sudden changes and disharmony in frequency, smoothness and tones.
When the researchers asked human volunteers, all of whom had experience with human babies, to listen to the same recorded cries and estimate the level of pain, the participants used different features than the crocs did to evaluate the sounds, basing their decisions largely on the pitch of the cries — how high or low a sound is. But it varies among individuals and across species. That makes it less reliable and accurate than the alternative acoustic clues picked up on by crocodiles.
The findings of the study raise the possibility that emotion may be communicated across species lines in more ways than scientists thought. As Grimault puts it, “If crocs can do it, probably many other animals can do it, too.”
32.Why are the cries collected from different situations played?
A.To discover which crocodiles are smart. B.To identify what appeals to crocodiles.
C.To develop how to protect crocodiles. D.To record when crocodiles interact.
33.How do most of the crocodiles respond to baby’ cries?
A.Guarding the speakers. B.Sunbathing on the rocks.
C.Attacking other crocodiles. D.Moving towards the sound.
34.Which of the following belongs to “alternative acoustic clues” in paragraph 3?
A.The volume of sound. B.The source of the cries.
C.The evenness of tone. D.The pitch of the voice.
35.Which statement would Grimault probably agree with?
A.Humans are sensitive to voices of other species.
B.Emotions may be shared beyond species borders.
C.Crocs tend to be friendly to babies of any species.
D.Cross-species communication is an unfading skill.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
A couple years ago, I was at the eye doctor with my six-year-old daughter. The doctor asked me more than once, “Why has she been frowning (皱眉) all the time?” I can’t know how much my child’s being a girl shaped his thoughts about her emotional state. But I know that people start expecting girls to show positive expressions early.
Researchers analyzed 16,000 yearbook photographs of students from kindergarten to college. Children showed no significant difference in smiling until age eight or nine. 36 The difference peaked by age 14 and continued into adulthood.
We may see such results because as children grow older, they become more aware of societal expectations related to gender roles. 37 People may also internalize gender roles portrayed in film and media, where smiling is seen as more common for women and seriousness for men.
In a study, teachers reported that girls were viewed as “peaceful” and “calm” (positive but passive emotions), whereas boys showed more “curiosity” and “anger” (expressive and agentic emotions). 38 This is a misconception. No scientific studies have shown that self-control mechanisms are more developed in girls than they are in boys.
Very early on, children learn to manage their emotions in line with societal norms they pick up from their peers and caregivers. Emotional expectations and the offhand comments that children internalize over time harm all kids. 39
Teaching children to manage their emotions is not wrong. But it is important not to expect children to all follow the same pattern. We need to talk with our children about bodily autonomy (自主权). We should also talk about emotional autonomy and how they can better understand their feelings. 40 What matters is how they deal with these feelings.
A.Smiling girls are considered more pleasant and friendly.
B.Children ought to know that it is okay to feel sad, upset and angry.
C.These expectations could come from teachers, parents or peer groups.
D.They can also have lasting negative effects on children’s sense of self.
E.Then the gap started to widen with girls smiling much more than boys.
F.It is widely believed that girls are better than boys managing their emotions.
G.Parents might encourage emotional expression in girls but discourage it in boys.

67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Sumi was a single mother. Her daughter Anna has always been called “Number 23.” Every time the school released exam results, Anna would always end up in 23rd position among 50 pupils. Always 23, no matter how hard she pushed Anna. Every mention of this nickname gnawed at Sumi.
One day, Sumi, along with Anna, was invited to a lively gathering of several friends and their families. The atmosphere was delightful and as the lunch came to a finish, a man playfully asked the youngsters what they aspired (有志成为) to be when they grew up. “I want to be a pianist!” “I want to be a famous actor!” “I want to be a politician!” “I’ll start a business and make tons of money!” One after another, the children voiced these bold, ambitious dreams, earning warm applause and compliments from the adults.
Anna, however, simply smiled and clapped along, remaining silent. She was quietly occupied with serving soup and distributing cookies to the guests. Then, the man who had posed the question turned his gaze toward Anna and added, “Hey, our Anna hasn’t shared her dream yet. What do you want to be when you grow up?” Anna paused, and then, with a soft smile, replied, “Uncle, I want to be a primary school teacher. I love kids — telling them funny stories and teaching them how to make paper cuts. I just love dancing and singing and playing with them.” The room fell instantly silent. Sumi felt her heart sink.
Later, boarding a rented bus for the return trip, Sumi stared out the window, a heavy cloud of disappointment settling over her. She had hoped Anna would dream bigger, not settle for such an ordinary life. As traffic thickened, the bus got fast stuck in a jam. Suddenly, two boys erupted into a full-blown quarrel over a single slice of dessert. No one could calm them down. To make matters worse, more kids on the bus began to get restless due to the jam.

I love watching them at work, but I wasn't allowed to touch the ones on display in the windows. We saw sandwiches at lunchtime, again, very expensive ones, and the sharp assistant had to make those. How did you get on with the other shop assistants? One of them was my best friend, which was great, but the full time staff times treated us badly because we couldn't cook. But I was surprised that the full time assistance couldn't add up in their head. I was good at IT, but they used calculators if there was anything difficult to work out. 听下面的录音,回答第十七至第二十小题。现在你有20秒钟的时间阅读这四个小题。Welcome to the international language college is a beautiful place that is well worth visiting in this city. Version 1:
At that critical moment, Anna stepped in. Approaching the quarreling boys with a calm smile, she suggested they flip a coin to settle their dispute. Simple as that, the argument ended. Everyone was stunned. Then, she began distributing treats like a caring big sister, instantly soothing the restless children. Making use of leftover candy boxes, she folded intricate paper animals—elephants, lions, and birds—and presented them to each child on the bus. The children’s eyes sparkled with joy as they admired their unique gifts, their cries replaced by laughter. The man who had asked about their dreams earlier watched in astonishment, clapping appreciatively. As for Sumi, a new emotion warmed her chest: pride.
Sumi excitedly called Anna a hero, but she shook her head gently. She grinned and replied softly, “Mom, I’m not a hero. When a hero walks down the road, everyone claps, but I want to be the one clapping for others.” That simple answer shifted something deep within Sumi. She realized she had always pushed Anna to achieve, shine, and be number one, yet she had missed the point. Being kind, happy, and true to oneself was the real achievement. Perhaps being “Number 23” wasn’t terrible after all, it was exactly where Anna was meant to shine. A tear of joy rolled down Sumi’s cheek as she wrapped her arm around her daughter’s shoulder. “Then be that teacher, my Anna. I shall be your loudest admirer.”
Version 2:
At that critical moment, Anna stepped in. She walked gently towards the two quarreling boys, took the slice of dessert from their hands, and carefully split it into two equal parts, handing one to each boy with a soft smile. “Sharing makes happiness double,” she whispered softly. Then she picked up the dessert wrapper, folded it skillfully, and soon turned it into a small paper frog. The two boys forgot their quarrel at once, staring at the paper frog in surprise. Other restless kids on the bus were attracted, crowding around Anna to learn folding paper. The adults on the bus watched with admiration, whispering praises for Anna’s thoughtfulness. Sumi sat quietly, her heart pounding—never had she noticed her daughter was so patient and wise, a surge of surprise and pride welling up in her.
Sumi excitedly called Anna a hero, but she shook her head gently. “I’m not a hero, Mom,” she said softly, “I just did what I like to do—sharing and making others happy, which is what a teacher should do.” Sumi pulled Anna tightly into her arms, her eyes filled with tears of regret and pride. She apologized for her previous disappointment and prejudice, saying she finally understood the meaning of “Number 23.” Instead of being a label of ordinariness, it was a symbol of Anna’s gentle and steady nature. “I’m so proud of you,” Sumi whispered, “Pursue your dream bravely, and I will always support you to be a good teacher.” It was at that moment that Sumi realized that true excellence is not about being the best, but about being kind and warm, and every ordinary dream is worth cherishing.

M: I’ll have three pairs of these shoes. Please tell me how much I should pay.
W: $ 40 for one pair, but we offer a 10% discount for each pair when you buy two pairs or more.

M: I am sorry to hear that Karl was fired. But I know he was often absent for sickness and he frequently arrived at work late.
W: Oh, neither of the reasons. Karl made a huge accounting error.

W: Do you have the passports?
M: In my jacket. Oh no! I’ve forgotten them.
W: Jason!
M: We still have over 2 hours left. I’ll get a taxi home and pick up the passports. But can you give me some money? I forgot my wallet, too.

W: There was nothing good about that film. It didn’t touch me at all.
M: I know. That movie totally turns me off. Let’s do something exciting.

M: So, you enjoyed the trip to Edinburgh, Ella. Did you buy that bag?
W: Yeah, at the market.
M: Did you buy anything else?
W: I also bought the ring I liked. I had to choose between that and a book I saw.

M: Excuse me. I’d like to book a ticket to Shanghai.
W: When would you like to fly?
M: As soon as possible. Do you have a flight tomorrow … the 7th of February?
W: Let me check. Sorry, that flight is all booked up. Can I book you for the 8th of February? We have a nonstop flight leaving Los Angeles at 9:25.
M: That will be OK. I’d like a seat in business class.
W: OK. And how will you pay, cash or credit card?
M: I’d like to pay by check.

M: Janet, have you drawn up a program of events for the exhibition?
W: Yes. Here it is.
M: Let me see. Date for the exhibition is the 19th of March. Good. That’s what we’ve agreed on. Now you have the opening ceremony at 10: 30, and it lasts for an hour. I think that’s too long.
W: So change it to finish at 11: 00?
M: OK. Now, let’s continue with the opening ceremony. I think it’d be better if we have it in the hall instead of the big playground. The hall isn’t as noisy, so we’ll be able to hear the speakers.
W: Sure.
M: Another thing that we’ll need to change is our first speaker. Ms. Black will not be able to attend as she has to take care of her husband, who had a car accident.
W: I see.

M: I can’t find my textbook for Biology 101.
W: I’m sorry, but we’re sold out.
M: Sold out! How can that be?
W: We received the wrong number of books. We’re over fifty books short.
M: We’ve been assigned two units to read for Friday. What am I going to do?
W: We’ll be getting the books next Monday.
M: But that doesn’t help me now!
W: Why not ask someone who has a book to share it with you?
M: I live off campus and don’t know anyone in my class yet.
W: Ah, my roommate is taking biology. I know she bought her books yesterday. I’ll ask her if she’ll let you borrow it for a day to get your reading done. And I’ll make sure to put aside a book for you when they come in next week.
M: Oh, that would be great.

M: Now, Linda, let’s talk about your first job.
W: Well, I was an assistant in an expensive cake shop in the small town where I lived. My boss was always polite, never shouted at us, even when we dropped things, and that was good for a young woman like me who wasn’t very confident. He knew everything about the business. I had no proper training, but it was a good experience working for someone with so much knowledge. He didn’t pay us well, but I didn’t expect to earn much in my first job.
M: Did you do any of the baking yourself?
