It was a week after my mom had passed away, and I didn’t know how to go on with life. So when I received an email from a friend about a race benefiting cancer research, I ignored it. It seemed too close to the heart, as cancer was the disease that had taken my mother away from me.
But something about my friend’s words — “I can help organize the whole thing” — stuck with me. I felt obliged (有义务的) to agree. In the weeks to come, I managed to re-enter the world of the living. I checked our team’s website daily, feeling proud each time a donation ticked up our total. I knew my mom would have wanted it that way. She was the type who never got defeated. It was this very spirit that helped me get by.
When the race ended, I noticed the runners all had one thing in common: There were big smiles on their faces. They made it look so rewarding and effortless. I wanted in.
So I enrolled in another race two months later. Considering I could barely run a mile, it was ambitious. But my friend and I made a training plan so I wouldn’t come in last. I followed it religiously and didn’t let anything get in my way.
Running up and down the city’s hills, I was flooded with memories. I had lived there after college and my mother had visited often. I passed Bloomingdale’s, recalling the time she and I had gotten into a screaming argument there.
I was about to beat myself up when I remembered what Mom had said after her diagnosis of cancer. “Jane, I don’t want you to feel guilty about anything.” Her paper-thin hands had held me tightly. A weight lifted from my shoulders.
When the race day arrived, I gave it my all for my mom and for all she had taught me and continued to teach me. As I ran, whenever I felt like slowing down, I pictured her cheering me on.
Crossing the finish line, I was filled with her love and a sense of peace.
24. Why did the author ignore the email in the beginning?
A. She felt it hard to finish the race.
B. She had no time to join in the event.
C. She thought the research meaningless.
D. She was reminded of her mother’s death.
25. What mainly helped the author recover from her mom’s death?
A. The company of her friends.
B. The inspiration from her mom.
C. The pleasure in going for a run.
D. The success in organizing an event.
26. Which of the words can best describe the author’s mom?
A. Considerate and polite. B. Brave and humorous.
C. Strong-willed and caring. D. Outgoing and patient.
27. What can we infer about the author from the passage?
A. She healed via running. B. She was good at running.
C. She won the race. D. She still feels guilty.
C
For several years now, the countryside has no longer functioned merely as a picturesque counterpoint (对比物) to the city but has become an active laboratory for new relationships between the landscape and people. Trace of Land is one of the examples.
Designers reinterpret the hay bale (干草捆) as spatial equipment that unfolds across the fields of Val Badia in the Italian Dolomites. Presented as part of the international open-air art event — SMACH 2026, the project transforms an agricultural object into a canopy-like (类顶篷的) structure that follows the landscape, offering places for shade, rest, and gatherings.
The land art equipment is a continuous path made of unfolded hay bales. It moves with the outline of the Alpine landscape. Removed from its functional role in farming, the ha y bale becomes both sculptural and architectural, drawing attention to the relationship between human labor, tools, and the land.
Often seen as typical parts of farm life, hay bales are in fact products of industrialized processes, stored and transported by machinery. In Trace of Land, this industrial form is loosened and reshaped, creating a structure that switches between lying on the ground and lifting lightly to form shaded passages. The result is a temporary canopy that strikes a balance between agricultural efficiency and the natural setting. In line with the theme of SMACH 2026, hay bales represent the reciprocal relationship between humans and the land, enhancing the dialog between people and the environment.
Visitors are invited to walk along and beneath the structure, using box-shaped bales arranged as seating to pause and reflect. As time passes, the hay will naturally break down, returning to the soil and completing a cycle of use and renewal.
28. What role is given to the ha y bale in the project?
A. A farming tool. B. A storage device.
C. A relaxation zone. D. A cultural platform.
29. What does the underlined word “reciprocal” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Formal. B. Casual. C. Mutual. D. Distant.
30. What can we learn about the ha y bale structure from the text?
A. It is a permanent architectural work for farming.
B. It combines artistic value with practical functions.
C. It aims to promote modern industrialized farming.
D. It is designed to replace traditional agricultural tools.
31. Which column of a website might the text be taken from?
A. Redesigning the countryside. B. Advocating farming techniques.
C. Remodeling urban landscape. D. Talking with agriculturalists.

Berries of all kinds are a delicious and healthy part of any diet. Now, researchers in Finland have shown that these fruits are more than just a tasty treat. A spray (喷雾) made of berry extract has been found to prevent deadly bacteria in wounds.
According to a press release from VTT Research in Finland, antibiotic (抗生素的) resistant bacteria are one of the ten greatest world health challenges of our time. This type of bacteria can cause wound infections that are very difficult to treat. But now a solution may have been found. VTT Research found a way to use the antimicrobial properties of berries to make a spray that kills deadly bacteria without harming the useful microbes (微生物) that live on the human skin.
This could avoid those very dangerous wound antibiotic resistant infections, and make it possible to use fewer antibiotics while treating a patient. “The product could easily be used in hospitals as, say, a liquid to spray on the skin before surgery,” Panu Lahtinen, Associate Professor and Senior Advisor at VTT said in the press release.
VTT has been researching the antimicrobial properties of berries for over two decades. While the data has not yet been published, the researchers found that wild berry seeds of all kinds are naturally coated with antimicrobial compounds. This helps prevent the growth of molds or other diseases before the fruit can shoot up. “Our research has identified antimicrobial compounds in several wild berries,” Panu told Good News Finland.
The researchers developed a way to extract the useful compounds from berry cakes, a byproduct of juice making that contains berry seeds and skins. A nanocellulose (纳米纤维素) film that is friendly to human skin is bathed in the berry compound extracted from the berry cake. This makes their spray entirely bio-based.
What is remarkable is that VTT found a way to use the power of their local natural surroundings — wild raspberries grow abundantly in Finland — to help humanity, all while also partaking in a circular economy by using organic matter that would otherwise be considered a waste product. As the threat of antibiotic resistant bacteria grows, it is good to know that the solution may be something so simple as a berry.
32. Which statement best describes the benefit of using berry spray?
A. It promotes faster surgical recovery.
B. It can reduce the number of surgeries.
C. It can free patients of pain in surgeries.
D. It reduces reliance on antibiotics in treatment.
33. How is the product made?
A. Making berries into berry cakes.
B. Making berry compounds hard enough.
C. Preventing aimed berries from getting affected.
D. Having berry compounds on nanocellulose material.
34. What is one most important fact about this product?
A. Benefiting local people’s health. B. Protecting patients’ skin before surgery.
C. Promoting sustainable development. D. Increasing the products of natural berries.
35. What can be the best title of the text?
A. Berry Spray Fights Bacteria. B. Berries: A New Tasty Treat.
C. Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria. D. Wild Berries Prove Powerful.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Dogs, more so than almost any other domestic pets, are desperate for human eye contact. ____36____ And according to a study that pull at the heartstrings might be exactly why dogs can give us those looks at all.
____37____ Studying the two animals is a bit like breaking open a four-legged time capsule. A paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that dogs’ faces are structured for complex expressions in a way that wolves aren’t.
For the study, a team looked at two muscles (the RAOL and LAOM muscles) that work together to widen and open a dog’s eyes, causing them to appear bigger and more lovely, which we read as distinctly humanlike. The muscles form two short, straight lines, which connect the ring of muscle around a dog’s eye to either end of the brow above. ____38____ Therefore, they concluded that the origin of these complex facial expressions is after dogs splitting from wolves. Research has also shown that when dogs work these muscles, humans respond more positively. This isn’t simply a coincidental love story, in which the eyes of two species just happen to meet across a crowded planet. ____39____
For a species to change quickly, a pretty powerful force must be acting on it. ____40____ We connect more deeply with animals capable of making humanlike facial movements, so dogs have evolved to look like our own human babies to be selected for adoption.
A. Dogs are very similar to wolves.
B. And that is where humans come in.
C. It’s hard for most people to resist the shining eyes of a little dog.
D. Dogs split off from their gray wolf relatives as many as 33,000 years ago.
E. But in the four gray wolves the researchers looked at, neither muscle was present.
F. Just like other best partnerships, this one is more likely the result of years of evolution.
G. Researchers have long been interested in the ways dogs make eye contact with humans.

Jessica breathed in the familiar smell of dried grass and horses when entering the building for horses. She was back for another summer at Green Meadow Farm’s riding camp. Her advisor, Rose, walked beside her. Jessica searched every corner, hoping to see Piper, her favourite horse she had bonded with last year. They had even won second place in the annual obstacle course race (障碍赛跑) , where Piper had skillfully moved through the poles. Jessica loved everything about Piper, from her gentleness to the way Piper’s soft nose tickled (使发痒) her hand whenever she fed her apples.
“I can’t wait to ride Piper,” Jessica told Rose. Rose smiled. “I know you love Piper, but we need to save her for some new riders.” Jessica’s heart sank, but she nodded in understanding.
“How about you try riding Harley?” Rose said. Jessica was a little frightened by the giant male horse Rose pointed to. Even though Harley was beautiful with his shiny hair, he looked restless. Rose could sense Jessica’s anxiety. “Don’t worry. He just needs an experienced rider to help train him.”
Jessica cautiously approached him, but Harley moved away. As Jessica touched his back, he appeared restless and let out a loud cry, making Jessica even more nervous. An annoyed Jessica led an unwilling Harley outside. She climbed on top of him and headed to the obstacle course. However, when reaching the fence, Harley planted his feet in the dirt, refusing to take another step.
The first few days together were full of challenges. Harley refused jumps, galloped (飞奔) out of control, and once, frightened by a bird, he even went up on his back legs and threw Jessica into the air. Feeling painful and discouraged, she turned to Rose. “I really miss Piper and her gentleness. Harley is too hard to control.” Patting her on the shoulder, Rose said thoughtfully, “It’s okay to be scared, but do remember Harley has his own fears. If you are nervous, you will make him nervous. If you are confident, he will feel confident. If you show him trust, he will trust you.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Hearing that, Jessica decided it was time for a fresh start with Harley.

W: Really well! I already have two offers.
M: That’s great!
W: It is. But they’re so different. One of the jobs is a sales representative for a big computer company. That job would be good because I could travel to Europe and Asia. I’d love that. And the other good thing about it is the pay. I could really make lots of money, as long as I sold a lot of computers.
M: Right. Your pay would depend on how many computers you sold every month. That could be a challenge. So, what’s the other job?
W: It’s a computer company, too, but a much smaller one. The job has good points, too. I’d have a steady income — the same salary every month. It would be good to know exactly how much money I could earn in every month. And it’s a small company that’s growing. I could be a manager in a few years.
M: That’s good.
W: Yeah, I don’t know, though. But I’ve been wanting to travel. Maybe it’s time for a challenge.

【原文】 W: And now to move on to our competition this month. Most of us think we can write a story. Well, here’s your chance to show that you can! Your story should be no longer than 800 words, although it can be as few as 500. So, what sort of story should you write? We’ve had science fiction and crime stories in competitions before, but this time, we want a thriller — if you send in a comedy, I’m afraid it won’t win. You may want to write about your own town or city, but we’re asking for stories set in the countryside — we think that gives everyone more chances to use their imagination. You can choose the season yourself — you might like winter because it’s dark and cold, or summer because it’s hot and sunny. The judges are well-known writers themselves: Jack Harris wrote an award-winning novel, The Lion, and Carol Simmons is the editor of the magazine Creative Writing, as well as the author of many short stories. You can email your stories directly to us. The email address is: shortstory@StarRadio.co.uk, and the closing date July 12th. Any stories we receive after this date will not be judged. The winning story will be put onto our website for everyone to read. There are several prizes including books and CDs, and the winner will be given a notebook computer. That should encourage everyone to try and write a good story!

【答案】24. D 25. B 26. C 27. A

【答案】28. C 29. C 30. B 31. A

【答案】32. D 33. D 34. C 35. A

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
【答案】36. C 37. D 38. E 39. F 40. B

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Hearing that, Jessica decided it was time for a fresh start with Harley.

The final day of the camp arrived, bringing with it the obstacle course race.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Hearing that, Jessica decided it was time for a fresh start with Harley. Determined to build trust, she grabbed an apple from her lunch box and went to find Harley. Initially, Harley stepped back, his eyes wide with suspicion. Speaking softly, Jessica offered the apple, her hand held steady. This calmness finally convinced him to take a cautious bite. With the ice broken, she began the training, starting with simple commands. Practicing together every day, Jessica felt their confidence growing remarkably. Harley, no longer flinching at every sound, started to respond willingly. It was after numerous such sessions that a true partnership blossomed, transforming their initial struggles into smooth teamwork. Soon, they were working their way through the obstacle course that once seemed impossible.
The final day of the camp arrived, bringing with it the obstacle course race. Before starting, Jessica leaned close, whispering, “We can achieve this, together.” So profound was their bond that all the fear vanished. At the signal, they surged forward as one. With Harley as a partner rather than just a horse, they flew over jumps with incredible power and weaved through poles with graceful precision. It was a flawless performance. Not until an explosion of cheers erupted did Jessica realize they had crossed the finish line first. Overwhelmed with joy, she threw her arms around Harley’s neck, feeling his warm breath and steady presence. At that victorious moment, she finally understood the profound wisdom of Rose’s words: the patiently built trust is the foundation of everything.
