Dear sister Sarah,

gone over five weeks.I am weary, but resting fast;sleepy, but sleeping deep and fast;hungry, but eating
much. For two weeks I explored the glaciers (of the summits east of here, sleeping among the snowy
mountains without blankets and with little to eat on account of its being so inaccessible. After my icy
experiences it seems strange to be down here in so warm and flowery a climate.
I will soon be off again, determined to use all the season in carrying through my work-will go next to
Kings River a hundred miles south, then to Lake Tahoe and surrounding mountains, and in winter work in
Oakland with my pen.
Though slow, some day I will have the results of my mountain studies in a form in which you all will be
able to read and judge of them. The mountains are calling and I must go,and I will work on while I can,
studying incessantly(永不停息地),
I will write again when I return from Kings River Canyon.
Farewell,with love everlasting.
Yours,
John

In recent years, mooncakes with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)ingredients have
become increasingly popular. It shows that modern consumers are paying more attention to
safer and healthier food in daily life.
TCM believes that many Chinese herbs can serve as both food and medicine. They are
helpful in preventing diseases, which is called "medicine food homology".It is the key theory
of food therapy. So far,106 kinds of common Chinese herbs have been allowed to be used in
food by official organizations.
To meet people's health needs, traditional mooncakes are changing-producers cut down
sugar and oil in their products. Many famous TCM brands and hospitals have launched TCM
mooncakes.For example,Tong Ren Tang,a well-known ancient TCM brand,has created
mooncakes with ingredients like danggui, dangshen and shihu. These mooncakes are made in
five colors, following the TCM idea that "five colors nourish five organs".
Han Lu,a researcher from Tong Ren Tang, said,"Consumers prefer natural food with
less sugar, less oil and no additives.Besides,TCM culture has won greater popularity among
young people in recent years.Experts will carefully choose TCM ingredients to avoid bad
medicine reactions.Fruits like grapes and coconuts are also added to make the mooncakes
taste better.A local consumer in Chengdu shared her experience. She chose mooncakes with
chenpi and Chinese yam on purpose, because they are good for her weak stomach. She also
said such mooncakes have no strong medicine smell and taste special.
However, some experts point out that they still remain high in oil and sugar and are often
consumed more as a snake than for their health benefits.Ma Xiaoju, director of the
department of nutrition at the School of Public Health at the Chengdu University of
Traditional Chinese Medicine, warned that foods produced with TCM may contain only small
amounts of herbs, which may not have significant health benefits.Additionally, due to their
high sugar and fat content, mooncakes are not recommended for people with high blood sugar
levels.
In general,TCM-themed food and drinks are popular across China now.For most
people, they are not used to treat illness, but simply help them keep a healthier lifestyle.
28.Why do TCM mooncakes become popular recently?
A.They are much cheaper than common mooncakes.
B.People's health awareness is rising.
C.They can cure all kinds of diseases.
D.All hospitals begin to produce them.
29.What does the underlined phrase "medicine food homology"in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Some herbs can be food as well as medicine.
B.Medicine should be made with common food.
C.People must eat medicine with daily food.
D.Traditional food is better than modern medicine.
【高一英语第5页(共10页)】
30.What can we learn about TCM mooncakes from the passage?
A.They have a strong terrible medicine smell.
B.They are totally healthy with no sugar.
C.Experts choose TCM ingredients safely for mooncakes.
D.High blood sugar patients can enjoy TCM mooncakes freely.
31.What is the author's attitude towards TCM mooncakes?
A.Uninterested.
B.Doubtful.
C.Objective.
D.Worried.

People are more likely to cheat when they delegate ()a task to artificial intelligence
instead of doing it themselves, suggests a new study.
To explore whether and under what circumstances AI supports dishonest behavior,
researchers conducted an experiment in which participants were shown 10 die rolls (on a
computer screen and told to report the numbers. The higher the numbers rolled, the more
money they would earn. They were then randomly assigned to either report the die-roll
numbers themselves or instruct AI to do it for them. The researchers found that when
participants self-reported the numbers, they were honest about 95%of the time. But when
participants instructed AI to report the numbers, they were more likely to cheat by a way that
would help them maximize their profits. In one group, for example, participants had the
option of instructing AI to "maximize accuracy"(report the numbers as accurately as
possible),"maximize profit"(an open invitation to cheat)or do something in between.Only
12%of the participants in this group chose to tell the AI to maximize accuracy while 29%
maximize profit.
The rest set a goal for Al that was somewhere in between maximize accuracy and
maximize profit."We were interested to not just see if people cheat, but how much,"says
Nils Kobis,a at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany and one of the study's authors.
Psychological research suggests that when people cheat they often don't do it to the
fullest extent possible,he says, which could explain why 59%of participants in the previous
experiment instruct the AI to do something in between maximizing accuracy and maximizing
profit.
Why does Al make cheating easier overall?Previous research suggests people may justify
dishonest behavior by shifting responsibility to others-in this case,an Al,the researchers
said. For the researchers, the takeaway is that Al makes it easier to dodge (taking
responsibility for moral errors,a problem they believe is likely to become more common.
Their research suggests giving people an option to do the task themselves, rather than
delegate it to Al,may help them be more honest."That is definitely a silver lining",says
Kδbis.
32.What is the purpose of the experiment?
A.To test die rolls on computers.
B.To study AI's effect on dishonest behavior.
C.To improve AI's working accuracy.
D.To compare profits of different groups.
【高一英语第6页(共10页)】
33.How many participants chose a middle choice for AI?
A.12%.
B.29%.
C.59%.
D.88%.
34.What is the main reason for easier cheating with AI?
A.AI forces people to cheat.
B.People can escape moral responsibility.
C.AI often provides wrong results.
D.People know nothing about AI rules.
35.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.AI will no longer be used in future work.
B.Avoiding AI delegation can cut down cheating.
C.Cheating problems will disappear soon.
D.People are willing to take all moral duties.

I love to play the piano and I greatly enjoy performing my songs,so when the annual
winter recital(小w音乐会)was canceled,I was disappointed.I had looked forward to it for a
long time and had already prepared two of my best songs.
My mom had a wonderful idea, however,to turn this disappointing letdown into

something worthwhile."You can perform your songs at Carriage House Senior Living,"my
mom suggested brightly."I'm sure the seniors there who do not have families visit them that
often, would really appreciate the music and you could play more than just two songs.
I immediately thought this was a great idea. One of the things I did not like about the
recitals was that I was limited to playing just a couple of songs.Playing the piano at Carriage
House seemed like a win-win situation because not only would I get to play more songs, but I
would also have the chance to cheer up the residents there with some lively tunes.
My mom called Carriage House and made arrangements for me to perform. In the coming
days,I worked especially hard to polish up fifteen pieces that I thought the crowd would
enjoy,including many old classics..When the much-anticipated(备受期待的)day finally
arrived,my family and I drove to Carriage House.Walking through the enormous double

the entrance to the dining room stood the piano as if it were just waiting to make some music
to liven the place up a bit.At nearly every table several gray-haired women or men were
seated enjoying their dinner and the company that the crowded room provided.Despite the
conversations going on at various tables though, isolation hung like a dark cloud in the room.
Almost immediately,we were greeted by an old woman with a walker who introduced
herself as Phyllis in charge of Carriage House. She welcomed me and led me to the stage.
