As a young boy, I remembered he argued with the owner over a fishing rod he wanted to buy for my birthday. The clerk engaged patiently with my father as the two went at it. In the end, my dad won and got a 25% discount. I was embarrassed. Negotiating for something that has a plainly marked price seemed somehow wrong. I asked my dad if the man was mad at us. He smiled. “Of course not. That man enjoyed the back-and-forth as much as I did.” Over the years, I tried my best to follow my father, but the ability is not a born nature. On a brilliant Madrid day, I decided to make my father proud. I spotted a man with a display of sunglasses. I approached him and picked out an attractive pair. In an offhand manner, he quoted me the American dollar equal to the local currency — $5. My father always offered half the stated price. Being an attentive student, I offered the man $2.50. I was taken completely by surprise when he flew off the handle and began to wave at me. I upped my offer to $3, then $3.50, then $4.50. The man told me I was offending him. “The price is now $6,” he said. I don’t know what possessed me, but I paid it. My efforts rarely bear fruit. On a recent trip to El Salvador, I was looking for a wallet for my son. The man quoted me a price of $10. I offered him $6. Looking painful, he placed his hand on his heart and then his little boy emerged, holding back tears. Finally, I gave the man $10 and even threw in an extra dollar for some candy for the little boy. I remembered my dad’s words: “Pretend you don’t need their goods. Stay calm and walk away.” Again, my dad was right. As it turned out, my trusting eyes worked wonders for building relationships, but made me overpay for everything. 4. Why did the author feel embarrassed? A. He hated the birthday gift. B. He thought the act improper. C. He disliked his father’s rudeness. D. He feared the owner’s impatience. 5. What does the underlined part “flew off the handle” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Lost his temper. B. Broke his word. C. Held his patience. D. Relieved his mood. 6. What happened to the author in El Salvador? A. He left without buying anything. B. He succeeded in moving the man. C. He gave more money than asked. D. He bought the wallet at his offered price. 7. What is the text mainly about? A. My attitude towards money. B. My life experiences abroad. C. My father’s negotiation failures. D. My unskilled negotiation ability. B 5. A 6. C 7. 根据原文第二段“I was embarrassed. Negotiating for something that has a plainly marked price seemed somehow wrong.(我感到很尴尬。为明码标价的商品讨价还价,我总觉得这样做不妥。)” 可知,作者尴尬是因为他认为父亲砍价的行为并不合适。 【5题详解】 词句猜测题。根据原文第四段“My father always offered half the stated price. Being an attentive student, I offered the man $2.50.(我父亲向来只出价标价的一半。我认真学着他的样子,向店主出价2.5美元。)”及“I was taken completely by surprise when he flew off the handle and began to wave at me.(他flew off the handle,还朝我挥手,这让我大吃一惊。)”及“The man told me I was offending him.(店主说我这是在冒犯他。)” 根据原文第五段“On a recent trip to El Salvador, I was looking for a wallet for my son. The man quoted me a price of $10.(最近一次去萨尔瓦多旅行时,我想给儿子买一个钱包。摊主给我报价十美元。)”及“Finally, I gave the man $10 and even threw in an extra dollar for some candy for the little boy.(最后,我给了这个人10美元,还额外多给了一美元,让他给小男孩买糖果。)” 根据原文最后一段“As it turned out, my trusting eyes worked wonders for building relationships, but made me overpay for everything.(事实证明,我待人真诚的眼神有助于维系人际关系,却也让我买东西时总多花钱。)” C The public schools are on to something when they guide their students out of the classroom and into fresh air. Exposure to green space reduces behavioral problems, gives children a cognitive (认知的) boost and may even lead to improved academic achievement, according to recent studies. A 2026 paper from Barcelona’s Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (流行病学), for example, monitored 2,500 children in the city over a year and found that pupils whose schools had more green space in and around them had better working memory and less inattentiveness. They found that greenery within and around schools — measured using satellite images — was linked with an enhanced mental ability to continuously update information, capacities known as working memory and superior working memory. And more recent research from Belgium, published in the online journal Plos Medicine, echoed these positive findings, but went one step further and concluded that children raised in greener areas have a higher IQ, as well as lower levels of difficult behavior. The analysis of more than 600 Belgian students aged between 10 and 15 found that a 3% increase in the greenness of their neighborhood raised their IQ score by an average of 2.6 points, with the increase in IQ points particularly significant for children at the lower end of the range, where small increases could make a big difference. Tim Nawrot, a professor of environmental epidemiology in Belgium who worked on the study, said: “What this study adds with IQ is a solid, well-established clinical measure. I think city builders or urban planners should prioritize investment in green spaces.” Other research has found that children with more green space near their homes have significantly stronger bones, potentially leading to lifelong health benefits, while another study found greener play areas boosted children’s immune (免疫的) systems. As these studies continue to uncover the hidden value of natural surroundings, it is high time that schools, urban designers and families joined hands to increase green access for young people. Providing children with more chances to connect with nature is a wise investment in their future. 8. What is found in the 2026 Barcelona study? A. Plants can reduce pupils’ academic pressure. B. More greenness cures students’ memory loss. C. More green space may better memory and focus. D. Inattentiveness makes for poor working memory. 9. What can be inferred from the Belgian study? A. Weaker IQ students gain more from greenness. B. Greenness affects all children in the same way. C. City planners have increased green investment. D. Neighborhood greenness determines IQ scores. 10. What does Tim Nawrot want to emphasize about the study? A. Its novelty. B. Its reliability. C. Its limitation. D. Its popularity. 11. What is the beneficial investment in children’s future? A. Letting them access nature more. B. Training them hard to increase IQ. C. Making them attend a key school. D. Enhancing their perception of nature. C 9. A 10. B 11. 根据第二段中的“A 2026 paper from Barcelona’s Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (流行病学), for example, monitored 2,500 children in the city over a year and found that pupils whose schools had more green space in and around them had better working memory and less inattentiveness.(例如,巴塞罗那环境流行病学研究中心2026年的一篇论文对该市2500名儿童进行了为期一年的监测,发现校园内外绿地更多的学生工作记忆更好,注意力也更集中。)” 根据第三段中的“The analysis of more than 600 Belgian students aged between 10 and 15 found that a 3% increase in the greenness of their neighborhood raised their IQ score by an average of 2.6 points, with the increase in IQ points particularly significant for children at the lower end of the range, where small increases could make a big difference.(研究分析了600多名10至15岁的比利时学生,发现社区绿化度每提升3%,学生智商平均提高2.6分,这一提升在智商偏低的孩子身上表现得尤为明显,小幅增长就能带来很大改变。)” 根据第四段中的“What this study adds with IQ is a solid, well-established clinical measure. I think city builders or urban planners should prioritize investment in green spaces.(这项研究将智商作为一项可靠且成熟的临床指标展开分析。我认为城市建设者和规划者应当优先投资建设绿地。)”可知,蒂姆·纳罗特意在强调这项研究结果的可靠性。 【11题详解】 细节理解题。根据第六段中的“Providing children with more chances to connect with nature is a wise investment in their future.(为孩子提供更多接触自然的机会,是对他们未来的一项明智投资。)” D Ask any birder, and they’ll tell you about the thrill of identifying a new species. Scientists have often seen curiosity as motivation to discover new information. That framing suggests that curiosity is all about acting now — that it drives us to find answers as soon as possible. This impatience for answers corresponds with what psychologists think is a main function of curiosity: to reduce uncertainty. The state of not knowing can be uncomfortable, like an itch (痒) that needs to be scratched (挠). But this picture of curiosity is incomplete. Consider how people watch a murder-mystery movie. As the tension builds, viewers want to know the identity and the motive of the murderer — but unlike the desire to identify a strange new bird, most don’t feel the urge to resolve that curiosity. Instead, people enjoy the unexpected turns of the plot as they gather more information. In a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA, we found that although interest can indeed drive an urgent desire for answers, it can also set people up for those moments of discovery. While our study participants watched each video, we asked them to report how curious they were about what the drawing would become. Interestingly, when participants were more curious about what the drawing would become, they were more likely to continue watching rather than skipping ahead to the answer. Our experiment also revealed that curiosity was highest at two key points: first, when uncertainty was the greatest, and second, when people were very close to identifying the drawings. When uncertainty was greatest, curiosity was experienced with joy. But during the second peak, as people got closer to the big reveal, curiosity coincided with frustration, perhaps like the sensation when a word is right on the tip of your tongue. Our work underlines the complexity of curiosity. Thinking about curiosity as going beyond the need for quick answers also highlights the power of what happens when we face uncertainty: having to think over and anticipate answers can improve learning and memory. 12. What is the traditional view of curiosity? A. It brings discomfort to human beings. B. It facilitates discovering new species. C. It pushes people to seek quick answers. D. It helps improve learning and memory. 13. Why are murder-mystery movies mentioned? A. To attract readers to watch such movies. B. To introduce people’s love for mysteries. C. To show the risk of revealing movie plots. D. To illustrate a different feature of curiosity. 14. What can we learn about the participants? A. They lost interest as the video went on. B. They chose to wait when highly curious. C. They often skipped to the end of the video. D. They felt frustrated at the greatest uncertainty. 15. What can be the best title for the text? A. Uncertainty: Face It in Life Wisely B. The Two Peaks of Human’s Curiosity C. The Way Curiosity Shapes Our Emotions D. Curiosity: More Than a Rush for Answers 【答案】12. C 13. D 14. B 15. 根据第一段“Scientists have often seen curiosity as motivation to discover new information. That framing suggests that curiosity is all about acting now — that it drives us to find answers as soon as possible.(科学家们常常将好奇心视为获取新信息的动力。这种观点暗示,好奇心本质上就是一种当下行动的驱动力——它促使我们尽快找到答案。)”可知,对于好奇心的传统看法是它促使人们寻求快速的答案。 【13题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“But this picture of curiosity is incomplete. Consider how people watch a murder-mystery movie. As the tension builds, viewers want to know the identity and the motive of the murderer — but unlike the desire to identify a strange new bird, most don’t feel the urge to resolve that curiosity.(但这种关于好奇心的描述还不够全面。想想人们观看悬疑犯罪电影时的情景。随着剧情的紧张气氛逐渐增强,观众会想要知道凶手的身份和动机——但与想要辨认一只陌生的鸟类这种需求不同,大多数人并没有强烈的愿望去解决这种好奇心。)”可知,提及悬疑犯罪类电影是为了说明好奇心的另一种表现形式。 【14题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“Interestingly, when participants were more curious about what the drawing would become, they were more likely to continue watching rather than skipping ahead to the answer.(有趣的是,当参与者对画作最终会变成什么样更感兴趣时,他们更有可能继续观看,而不是直接跳到答案部分。)” 通读全文,尤其是最后一段“Our work underlines the complexity of curiosity. Thinking about curiosity as going beyond the need for quick answers also highlights the power of what happens when we face uncertainty: having to think over and anticipate answers can improve learning and memory.(我们的研究强调了好奇心的复杂性。 Pets behave in ways that seem cute or puzzling to us, but behind their gestures, licks(舔), and stares lie real emotions and messages we often overlook. Animals want our attention, and sometimes they ask for it in a very obvious way. Silly gestures are often our pets’ way of telling us to stop what we’re doing and play with them. ____16____ A desperately bored pet may turn to bad behaviors to draw a reaction — even a negative one! Sure, your dog loves you, but that’s not why he’s licking your face. A puppy learns to lick his mother’s mouth to seize a little leftover food, so Max is kissing you because he just wants a snack. ____17____ While a cat might lick you to show affection, sometimes she’ll do it to calm herself. One way to tell if her licking is stress-related is if it goes on for an extended period of time. At some point you’ve probably uttered “I can’t even look at you” to someone who made you angry. ____18____ Another sign of anger: yawning(哈欠). A yawning pet may not be tired but restless, not bored but stressed. You might think your dog is running around the backyard, having the time of his life while you’re away. ____19____ Dogs sometimes prefer to be inside, ideally with their owners. When a cat presents you with his behind, it means he sees you as a motherly figure, since he used to do that to get his mother to touch him. Likewise, a dog that shows you his belly isn’t just inviting a rub. ____20____ A. Cat owners also misinterpret their pets’ kisses. B. Licking is the only way for cats to show their love to humans. C. Pets usually show their anger by biting or shouting at their owners. D. Rolling over is a sign of submission, which is how dogs convey trust. E. It’s why Fido constantly chases his tail and why Kitty keeps rolling around. F. Dogs think similarly, avoiding eye contact with anyone who ruins their mood. G. But the reality is that he just sits in one spot for hours, waiting for your return. E 17. A 18. F 19. G 20. 【16题详解】 前文“Silly gestures are often our pets’ way of telling us to stop what we’re doing and play with them.(愚蠢的行为通常是我们的宠物告诉我们停止正在做的事情并与它们玩耍的方式。)” E“It’s why Fido constantly chases his tail and why Kitty keeps rolling around.(这就是为什么Fido总在追自己的尾巴,而Kitty总是不停地打滚。)” 【17题详解】 后文“While a cat might lick you to show affection, sometimes she’ll do it to calm herself.(虽然猫可能会舔你以示爱意,但有时它会这样做来安抚自己。)” A“Cat owners also misinterpret their pets’ kisses.(猫主人也会误解他们宠物的亲吻行为。)” 【18题详解】 前文“At some point you’ve probably uttered ‘I can’t even look at you’ to someone who made you angry.(在某个时候,你或许曾对惹恼你的人说过“我甚至都不想看你一眼”。)” F“Dogs think similarly, avoiding eye contact with anyone who ruins their mood.(狗也有类似的心理活动,它们会避免与那些破坏其心情的人进行眼神接触。)” 【19题详解】 前文“You might think your dog is running around the backyard, having the time of his life while you’re away.(你可能会认为,当你不在家的时候,你的狗狗就在后院里欢快地跑来跑去,尽情享受着时光。)” G“But the reality is that he just sits in one spot for hours, waiting for your return.(但实际情况是,它总是坐在同一个位置上一坐就是好几个小时,等着你回来。)”解释了真实情况,“But the reality is”表转折,与前文构成转折关系。 【20题详解】 前文“Likewise, a dog that shows you his belly isn’t just inviting a rub.(同样地,一只露出腹部的狗并不是仅仅在邀请你去抚摸它。)” D“Rolling over is a sign of submission, which is how dogs convey trust.(翻身是一种屈服的表现,而狗就是通过这种动作来表达信任的。)”紧扣“a dog that shows you his belly”,解释该行为的真实含义,呼应全文主旨。 My aunt Charlotte — who had lived her life with love and laughter for 100 years — recently passed away. We decided to return home on our own in the evening as we thought that we could catch the last local train to Boston. Our daughter, who lives in Boston, insisted that she would pick us up in the evening. But we were confident of our ability to retrace our way and didn’t want to trouble her. So we turned down her offer. We had a great time near the sea and decided to return to Boston at six in the evening. My husband has a very good memory and a nice sense of direction. So I blindly followed him, without knowing where we were heading. We found ourselves just going round in a “maze”, with the station nowhere to be found! That day was a Sunday, so the roads were very quiet and there weren’t many people walking around. We saw a few passers-by, but at first we felt a little awkward and hesitant to ask them for directions. We started getting worried. Then, we saw a young American man walking towards us. We approached him and explained the trouble we faced. On hearing our problem, he walked us to the station personally. It turned out that the station was only a few blocks away from where we were! Soon, we reached there. With only a few dollar coins on us, we took them out and put them into the ticket machine’s coin slot, but the coins just fell out of it right away. The machine didn’t print our tickets at all! To make things worse, we learned that the last train would depart in half an hour. Then we were told the machine was wrong, taking paper money only. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ We boarded the train hurriedly, with his phone number in mind. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Then we were told the machine was wrong, taking paper money only. Panic washed over us — we had no cash bills and the clock was ticking fast, the last train’s departure only twenty minutes away. The young man, noticing our despair, offered to help without hesitation. He took our crumpled coins, ran to a nearby shop to exchange them for notes, and then rushed back to buy our tickets. His kindness left us speechless, as we had no idea how to thank him properly, so we kept repeating “thank you” over and over again. We boarded the train hurriedly, with his phone number in mind. As the train pulled away, we waved gratefully through the window, knowing we would never have made it home without his help. Later that night, we called him to express our thanks and promised to pass on his kindness whenever we could, sharing the story with our daughter as soon as we arrived. This unexpected act of generosity taught us that even in unfamiliar places, there are always people willing to lend a hand, turning a stressful disaster into a warm memory we would cherish forever. 词汇激活 行为类 ①主动帮忙:offer to help/lend a helping hand/come to our aid ②表达感谢:express our thanks/show our appreciation/convey our thanks 情绪类 ①绝望:despair/hopelessness/desperation ②感激地:gratefully/thankfully/with gratitude 【点睛】[高分句型1] His kindness left us speechless, as we had no idea how to thank him properly, so we kept repeating “thank you” over and over again. C The public schools are on to something when they guide their students out of the classroom and into fresh air. D Ask any birder, and they’ll tell you about the thrill of identifying a new species. Curiosity: More Than a Rush for Answers Pets behave in ways that seem cute or puzzling to us, but behind their gestures, licks(舔), and stares lie real emotions and messages we often overlook. My aunt Charlotte — who had lived her life with love and laughter for 100 years — recently passed away. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
