Jimmy, aged 13
Hope helps me see my good points and it makes me feel calm and happy.
Tracy, aged 14
I often feel hopeless when facing problems. I think problems are too big to solve and I even want to give up.

Hope is a skill you can learn. You can start by working towards an important goal. If you feel hopeless, talk to people who have succeeded or someone who supports you. They can help you.
Here are more tips to stay hopeful:
* Make a hope cloud: Write what you hope for on a cloud-shaped paper. Write at least one thing you can do to get closer to your dream. Put it where you can see it to remind yourself.
* Keep good habits: Exercise every day. Play or listen to music. Volunteer to help others. Spend time in nature, like going for a bike ride.

Chinese climber, double amputee (双截肢者) Xia Boyu won the Sporting Moment of the 2019 Year Prize, a world-class title given to international sportsmen to honor their remarkable achievements.
Xia made his name known in and outside China on May 14, 2018, when he became the first Chinese double-amputee climber to reach the top of Mount Qomolangma. But the 70-year-old man’s story with the world’s highest mountain started many years ago, when Xia joined the Chinese mountaineering team in 1974.
During his first climb in 1975, the young Xia gave his sleeping bag to a teammate who had lost his own. When they reached the foot of the mountain, Xia discovered that his feet had no feeling. His legs had to be amputated. However, he did not feel regretful for giving up the chance of life to others. He later got prosthetic legs (义肢).
To fulfill his life dream, he trained every day and did outdoor sports. Xia restarted his challenge of climbing the mountain in 2014, 2015 and 2016 as well, but failed because of snow slides, earthquakes and terrible weather. Facing all these difficulties, Xia Boyu did not give up. He continuously trained and prepared himself both physically and mentally for another chance. He made his fifth try in May, 2018. This time, luck smiled upon the 69-year-old man.
“Reaching the top of Qomolangma has always been a dream and goal. The experience has made my life colorful and meaningful.” Xia told Chinese media.
Xia added that his next goal will be “7+2,” that is, the highest tops of seven continents, plus the South and North poles. He will not stop climbing.
19. When did Xia Boyu become famous in and outside China?
A. In 1974. B. In 1975. C. In 2018. D. In 2029.
20. Which is the right order of the following events?
①Xia joined the Chinese mountaineering team.
②Xia had to lose his legs after a mountain climb.

A. ①②④③ B. ①③②④ C. ④③②① D. ④②③①

A. The Sporting Moment of the 2019 Year Prize.

D. The story of Xia Boyu, a double amputee climber.
22. Which words can best describe Xia Boyu according to the text?
A. Shy and careful. B. Proud and lonely.
C. Kind and strong-willed. D. Easy-going and humorous.

根据文章第二段“Xia made his name known in and outside China on May 14, 2018, when he became the first Chinese double-amputee climber to reach the top of Mount Qomolangma.”
根据文章内容梳理事件顺序: ①Xia joined the Chinese mountaineering team(1974年,夏伯渝加入中国登山队); ②Xia had to lose his legs after a mountain climb(1975年,第一次登山后因冻伤截肢); ④Xia succeeded in his fifth try of reaching the top(2018年,第五次尝试登顶成功); ③Xia got the Sporting Moment of the Year Prize(2019年,获得年度体育时刻奖)。
C
①Everyone remembers their “first times”—first day at school, first bike ride, or first swim in the sea. These moments stay with us for years, while we easily forget what we ate for lunch last Tuesday. That’s because our brain is wired to notice new or unusual things. When something happens for the first time, it creates strong feelings like excitement, fear, or surprise. Scientists call this “the magic of firsts”. We can use this power to make our daily lives more memorable.
②Businesses have long understood the value of first experiences. Take a small bakery (蛋糕店) in New York as an example. It offers a “First Bite Free” rule. Every new customer gets a free cookie—but only the first time they visit. The cookie costs little, but the experience of being welcomed with a gift makes people remember the shop. Later, they come back again and again, not just for the bread, but for that warm feeling of their first visit.
③The same magic could also work in the classroom. For example, a teacher might organize a “First Science Show”. Students would watch a surprising experiment—like a balloon that doesn’t break over a fire. That first exciting moment could help them remember the scientific rules. Even months later, they might forget many lessons, but not that first show.
④At home, parents can also create “first times” without spending much. A first night of camping in the backyard, first time baking cookies together, or first family trip to a library—these can become treasures in a child’s heart. Children grow up fast, but those first experiences may stay with them like little lights in their memory.
⑤So why not plan a “first time” this week? A small first experience does not cost much, but it can stay in your memory for years.
23. What can we learn from Paragraph 1?
A. First times always create feelings of fear. B. First-time events are usually unforgettable.
C. Our brain often forgets exciting experiences. D. People remember lunch better than a bike ride.
24. Why does the small bakery in New York become popular?
A. It has lower prices than other bakeries.
B. It offers more kinds of bread and cookies.
C. It gives a free cookie to every customer every time.
D. It creates a memorable first visit experience for customers.
25. What is the structure of the text?
A. B. C. D.
26. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Magic of First Times B. The Importance of First Plans
C. The Fun of First Family Activity D. The Ways to Run a First Bakery
B 24. D 25. A 26. A

原文第一段“These moments stay with us for years, while we easily forget what we ate for lunch last Tuesday.”,说明人生中的第一次经历往往让人难以忘记。
原文第二段“the experience of being welcomed with a gift makes people remember the shop. Later, they come back again and again”,这家小店靠为顾客打造难忘的初次到店体验,吸引大家反复光顾。
因此“The Magic of First Times”是最佳标题。
D
①A camera trap (感应捕捉装置) filmed China’s first wild Amur tigress (雌虎) with five cubs, reported by WWF China. It was recorded in November 2025, in a National Park in Hunchun, Jilin province. The park is part of the world’s largest tiger reserve.
②The video clearly shows the adult tigress gently caring for her five cubs, including feeding and protecting them. According to a media statement from WWF China, the tigress is thought to be about 9 years old, while the cubs are believed to be 6 to 8 months old.
③WWF China noted that having five cubs at a time is really rare for wild Amur tigers. They usually give birth to 1 to 4 cubs even in good conditions with plenty of food. What makes it more amazing is that all five cubs have successfully lived although there isn’t enough food. Last month, park guards in Hunchun also took pictures of another Amur tigress who is guessed to be 7 or 8 years old. She was together with four cubs, which are also 6 to 8 months old.
④As a top predator, Amur tigers depend greatly on the wholeness of their living place and the health of the food chain. These sightings of tiger families fully show that China’s long-term protection work is highly effective.
⑤Also known as Siberian tigers, they are among the world’s most endangered big cats and a symbol of healthy forest environments. In 1998, only 12 to 16 Amur tigers were believed to be living in the wild in China, but now there are about 70 wild Amur tigers in this national park alone.
⑥WWF officials said the video not only proves China’s protection efforts are working well but also brings great hope for protecting other endangered animals.
27. What did the video record in November 2025 in Hunchun?
A. A tigress giving birth to her four cubs. B. A tigress gently caring for her five cubs.
C. A 9-year-old tigress hunting food for her cubs. D. An 8-year-old tigress fighting with four tiger cubs.
28. What does the underlined word “rare” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Unwise. B. Strong. C. Dangerous. D. Uncommon.
29. What writing methods does the writer use in Paragraph 5?
A. Giving examples and telling stories. B. Listing numbers and comparing facts.
C. Asking questions and giving suggestions. D. Describing facts and explaining reasons.
30. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To tell people how to protect Amur tigers.
B. To explain why Amur tigers are endangered.
C. To show China’s success in protecting Amur tigers.
D. To introduce the great living ability of wild Amur tigers.
B 28. D 29. B 30. C
在第②段第1句“The video clearly shows the adult tigress gently caring for her five cubs, including feeding and protecting them.”,此句明确表明视频记录的是一只母虎温柔地照顾它的五只幼崽。
在第③段“WWF China noted that having five cubs at a time is really rare for wild Amur tigers. They usually give birth to 1 to 4 cubs even in good conditions with plenty of food.”中,从“usually give birth to 1 to 4 cubs”和“having five cubs at a time”的对比可知,一次有五只幼崽是不常见的,所以“rare”意思是“不常见的”,对应D选项“Uncommon”。
在第⑤段“In 1998, only 12 to 16 Amur tigers were believed to be living in the wild in China, but now there are about 70 wild Amur tigers in this national park alone.”,通过“1998年”“12—16只”“现在”“约70只”这些数字以及过去和现在数量的对比,可知运用了列数字和对比事实的写作方法,对应B选项。
在第④段“These sightings of tiger families fully show that China’s long-term protection work is highly effective.”明确提出这些虎群的发现充分说明中国长期的保护工作成效显著;第⑥段“WWF officials said the video not only proves China’s protection efforts are working well but also brings great hope for protecting other endangered animals.”

根据前文的“The family was warm and happy.” 排除ended up“结束”;held back“退缩”和carried on“继续”
根据前文“The family was warm and happy.”
根据后文“Who enjoys this endless fighting?”
根据“for your respect till now, but I can’t anymore”可知,Gopal之前因为尊重父亲而忍耐,没有抱怨,即保持沉默,silent“沉默的”符合语境。
根据下文“All three nodded.”
根据后文“Within moments, the plates lay broken into pieces.”
根据前后句逻辑,“tried hard to fix them”与“remained crooked”之间是转折关系,用转折连词but“但是”连接。
根据前文“they tried hard to fix them”可知,盘子上留下的是他们刚刚修理过的痕迹,repairing“修理”符合语境。

根据前文“they tried hard to fix them, ____ the plates remained crooked“可知,家庭破碎后就像盘子破碎一样,盘子破碎后永远回不到以前的模样,never“从不”符合语境,sometimes“有时”;usually“通常”和always“总是”与“破碎后无法恢复原样”的语境不符。
根据前文“Tears filled the sons’ eyes.”
结合下文“May our love never become like a broken plate.”
