There is a circle living in a forest. One day, he finds that a piece is missing. He wants to find it back, so he goes around and looks for it. But because he is incomplete, he can’t go very quickly.
On the way, the circle sees many beautiful things. There are so many beautiful flowers in different colors and they smell really good. The circle stops and looks at them one by one. He also talks with the birds in the trees. The sunshine is warm and makes him feel comfortable. And he also finds many pieces. He picks them up and tries to put them back. But they don’t fit. He leaves them all by the side of the road and keeps on going.
One day, he finds a good piece. It fits well. The circle is very happy and puts the piece in. He can go quickly now, but he can’t enjoy the flowers. He can’t talk with birds, either. The circle feels very sad.
After that, he has a good idea. He leaves the piece by the side of the road. He goes slowly again to enjoy many beautiful things. Sometimes, he stops to watch a little rabbit hopping (蹦跳) around. He also listens to the soft wind blowing through the grass. At last, he lives a wonderful life.
26. The circle can’t move fast because he loses one of his pieces.
27. The circle is too busy enjoying the beauty to look for his missing piece.
28. The wrong pieces are left by the road after the circle fails to fit them in.
29. After the circle becomes whole again, he can still talk with birds as before.
30. The story tells us that people with perfect lives are always the happiest.

根据第一段“But because he isn’t round, he can’t go very quickly.”
根据第二段“The circle stops and looks at them one by one. He also talks with the birds in the trees.”和“He also finds many pieces. He picks them up and tries to put them back.”
根据第二段“He picks them up and tries to put them back. But they don’t fit. He leaves them all by the side of the road and keeps on going.”
根据第三段“He can go quickly now, but he can’t enjoy the flowers. He can’t talk with birds, either.”
(C)
Do you often sweep the fallen leaves in your schoolyard? Could they pollute our environment? Many people think fallen leaves are waste and should be cleaned up. But now, more and more people leave them on the ground to avoid sending them to landfills (垃圾填埋场) and let them break down naturally.
Leaving leaves on the ground has several good points. As leaves decompose (腐烂) slowly, they turn into natural plant food and make the soil (土壤) richer. Besides, it saves money, for people needn’t buy much plant food or pay to throw leaves away. So it is a win-win for both people and the planet.
However, we cannot leave leaves everywhere. Whole leaves on walkways are dangerous, for they may make the ground slippery and lead to accidents. Thick leaves on grass are also harmful. In snowy places, water may stay between grass and leaves, which may cause mold (霉菌). In other places, thick leaves stop sunlight and water from reaching the grass and hurt it.
We can’t simply leave leaves wherever they fall. There are smarter ways to deal with them. For example, break leaves into small pieces to let them fall into the grass, though this may hurt some insects.
Another way is to take leaves off the grass and spread them lightly over garden beds, where they will break down by spring or summer. We can also make them into natural plant food: put leaves in a pile (堆), add a little plant food, and keep it a bit wet. After one or two years, they will become good soil for plants. Clearly, fallen leaves are too valuable to throw away.
31. What did many people think of fallen leaves before?
A. Useless. B. Helpful. C. Valuable.
32. Which phrase below can take the place of the underlined word “slippery”?
A. easy to stand on B. hard to fall over C. hard to walk on
33. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. People needn’t buy much plant food because fallen leaves decompose too slowly.
B. Thick leaves on grass can stop sunlight and help plants grow faster.
C. Fallen leaves can be both helpful and harmful depending on how they’re dealt with.
34. Which shows the correct order of turning fallen leaves into good soil?
a. put in some plant food b. turn into rich soil
c. collect fallen leaves d. keep the pile a little wet
A. c-a-d-b B. d-a-c-b C. c-d-a-b
35. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. How to Throw Away Fallen Leaves
B. Fallen Leaves: Waste or Treasure
C. Why Plants Need Fallen Leaves
31. A 32. C 33. C 34. A 35. B
根据第一段第二句“Many people think fallen leaves are waste and should be cleaned up.”
根据第三段第二句“Whole leaves on walkways are dangerous, for they may make the ground slippery and lead to accidents.” C“hard to walk on” (难走) 符合slippery (滑的) 导致的危险语境。
根据最后一段制作天然植物肥料的步骤:“put leaves in a pile (c)” (收集落叶堆成堆)→ “add a little plant food (a)” (加些植物肥料)→ “keep it a bit wet (d)” (保持湿润)→ “become good soil (b)” (变成肥沃的土壤)。

第一段前文提到夜间跑步可能很危险“it may be dangerous for them to go out at night”,后文紧接着说“Here is some advice for you”,因此空格处应起到承上启下的作用,引出关于安全的话题。B项“Do you know how to keep safe at night?”
第二段主要讲要带智能手机“Take a smartphone with you”,空格后提到“You can use it to call your parents...”,这里的it指代手机。A项“Remember to take it even though you’re just running near your house.”

To most people, Mount Qomolangma is one of the world’s greatest wonders. At its highest point, people feel they can almost touch the sky. But only top climbers can reach the top. They must deal with the terrible conditions when climbing Qomolangma, such as thin air, high cliffs (悬崖) and changeable weather.
Before 1960, no one could reach the top of Qomolangma from the northern side. Climbers even called that way the “Death Road”. However, a Chinese climbing team never gave up. On May 24, 1960, four climbers got to the 8,600-metre Second Step. Because it was so high, Liu Lianman let his teammates step on his shoulders. They kept climbing. At 4:20 a.m. on May 25, the Chinese national flag flew above the world’s highest mountain for the first time.
In 1975, another Chinese team went there for research and brought a ladder (梯子) to the Second Step. After that, most northern-side climbers used the “Chinese Ladder” to reach the top much faster. In 2020, a third team returned to Qomolangma to measure (测量) its height—8,848.86 metres.
Climbing Qomolangma is dangerous, but many people still risk their lives to climb it. That’s because they love challenges and have a strong will. As the English explorer (探险家) George Mallory said, “Because it’s there.”

In China, families celebrate a baby’s first birthday with a traditional activity called zhuazhou. It is a special activity to guess something about the child’s future life.
During the party, parents place different objects like books, toys, food, tools, or pens. Then, they gently put the babies in the middle and let them choose whatever interests them!
Each object has a meaning. For example, if a baby takes a pen, people will say he or she may be a good writer someday. If they choose a toy, it could mean they’ll always enjoy life and have lots of fun. If the baby picks a kitchen tool, like a small spoon or bowl, some may say the child will love taking care of the family.
This custom started over 1,500 years ago, during the Southern and Northern Dynasties. It became even more popular in the Tang and Song Dynasties. People in ancient times saw zhuazhou as an important life ceremony. Today, many Chinese families still keep this custom alive. It’s a light-hearted and joyful (愉快的) way to welcome the child into a new stage of life.
Zhuazhou is more than just a game—it shows how much families love their children and enjoy dreaming about their future. It’s a happy event full of laughter and hope.

Reaching New Heights
