B I was about 13 when an uncle gave me a copy of Jostein Gaarder’s Sophie’s World. It was full of ideas that were new to me, so I spent the summer with my head in and out of that book. It spoke to me and brought me into a world of philosophy. That love for philosophy lasted until I got to college. Nothing kills the love for philosophy faster than people who think they understand Foucault, Baudrillard, or Confucius better than you — and then try to explain them. Eric Weiner’s The Socrates Express: In Search of Life Lessons from Dead Philosophers reawakened my love for philosophy. It is not an explanation, but an invitation to think and experience philosophy. Weiner starts each chapter with a scene on a train ride between cities and then frames each philosopher’s work in the context of one thing they can help us do better. The end result is a read in which we learn to wonder like Socrates, see like Thoreau, listen like Schopenhauer, and have no regrets like Nietzsche. This, more than a book about understanding philosophy, is a book about learning to use philosophy to improve a life. He makes philosophical thought an appealing exercise that improves the quality of our experiences, and he does so with plenty of humor. Weiner enters into conversation with some of the most important philosophers in history, and he becomes part of that crowd in the process by decoding (解读) their messages and adding his own interpretation. The Socrates Express is a fun, sharp book that draws readers in with its apparent simplicity and gradually pulls them in deeper thoughts on desire, loneliness, and aging. The invitation is clear: Weiner wants you to pick up a coffee or tea and sit down with this book. I encourage you to take his offer. It’s worth your time, even if time is something we don’t have a lot of. 24. Who opened the door to philosophy for the author? A. Foucault. B. Eric Weiner. C. Jostein Gaarder. D. A college teacher. 25. Why does the author list great philosophers in paragraph 4? A. To compare Weiner with them. B. To give examples of great works. C. To praise their writing skills. D. To help readers understand Weiner’s book. 26. What does the author like about The Socrates Express? A. Its views on history are well-presented. B. Its ideas can be applied to daily life. C. It includes comments from readers. D. It leaves an open ending. 27. What does the author think of Weiner’s book? A. Objective and plain. B. Daring and ambitious. C. Serious and hard to follow. D. Humorous and straightforward. C A novel design approach to gardening has been gaining in popularity worldwide. Referred to as matrix planting, this approach aims for nature to do a lot more of the heavy lifting in the garden, and even some of the designing. Eschewing fertilizers (化肥) and power tools, it’s based on an elegantly simple principle: to garden more like nature does. The concept was born when German city planners sought to plant large areas of parkland after World War II in a reproducible way that would need minimal maintenance. Planners created planting mixes that could be used modularly (模块化). In a matrix garden, plants with similar cultural needs are grouped so that they will grow together above and below ground, forming a cooperative ecosystem that conserves water and discourages weeds. Dutch plantsman and designer Piet Oudolf’s gardens popularized this style, adding artistic flavors to the planting mixes while playing with color and form, including four-season interest and serving the needs of wildlife. Beautiful year-round, they invite you to enjoy the smallest detail, from the sound of grasses in the gentle wind to the sculpture of odd-looking seed heads. It takes a lot of thought to look this natural. While matrix gardens appear wild, they are carefully planned, with cultural needs the first consideration. Led by the concept of “right plant, right place,” they match plants that enjoy the same soil, sun and weather conditions, and arrange them according to their patterns of growth. The benefits are substantial for both gardener and planet. With human inputs dramatically reduced, the garden’s ecology can develop well. Established matrix gardens should not need the life support we give most gardens: fertilizer, dividing, regular watering. Compared to traditional garden plots, they increase carbon absorption, reduce stormwater runoff and boost habitat and biodiversity significantly. 28. What does the underlined word “Eschewing” in the first paragraph mean? A. Running out of. B. Keeping away from. C. Putting up with. D. Taking advantage of. 29. Why was the idea of matrix planting introduced? A. To control weeds in large gardens. B. To bring in foreign species of plants. C. To conserve soil and water resources. D. To develop low-maintenance parkland. 30. Which of the following best describes Piet Oudolf’s gardens? A. Traditional. B. Odd-looking. C. Tasteful. D. Well-protected. 31. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text? A. The future of gardening is WILD B. Nature treats all lives as EQUALS C. Matrix gardens need more CARE D. Old garden plots work WONDERS D Magic is a form of entertainment that is based on pretending to do things that are impossible. The magician is a specially trained actor. He tries to make the audience believe that he has the power to do things which are against the laws of nature. Magic shows are entertaining as long as the audience does not discover how the tricks are done. The magician usually depends on his skill with his hands, on his knowledge of psychology, and, sometimes, on mechanical devices Since magic performance is meant to trick people, the use of psychology is important. The magician must keep people from noticing all the movements of his hands and from thinking about the secret parts of his equipment. He must also lead the audience to draw false conclusions. The magician’s success depends on the fact that many things seen by the eye are not the things that matter. Two basic magic tricks are making objects seem to appear and making objects seem to disappear. A combination of these two tricks makes for some interesting effects. For example, the magician puts a small ball under one of several cups. The ball then seems to jump from one cup to another or to change color. What actually happens is that the magician, employing quick hand movements or a mechanical device, hides one ball. While doing this he talks to the audience and waves a brightly colored cloth with one hand. The audience is too busy watching the cloth and listening to the magician’s words to notice that his other hand is hiding the ball. Another favorite trick is to cut or burn something and then make it appear whole again. What actually happens is that the magician makes the cut or burned object disappear by quickly hiding it while the audience watches something else. Then he “magically” makes it appear whole again by displaying (展示) another object that has not been cut or burned. 32. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text? A. To promote a magic show. B. To teach people to be magicians. C. To explain the art of magic. D. To praise the talents of magicians. 33. Which of the following is important for a successful magic trick? A. Moving stage equipment. B. Directing the audience’s attention. C. Applying high technology. D. Keeping the performance in secret. 34. What does the author focus on in the last two paragraphs? A. Providing examples. B. Making a summary. C. Drawing comparisons. D. Explaining a concept. 35. What can we infer from the text? A. Mechanical devices are expensive. B. Most magicians employ assistants. C. It takes practice to perform magic. D. Small objects are magicians’ favorite. Have you ever experienced such moments: a warm smile from a stranger, a brief chat with someone waiting in line, or a simple wave to a neighbor you hardly know? These tiny interactions among strangers and familiar faces alike are called “microconnections”. 36 Yet their importance goes far beyond our awareness. When people have a microconnection with a stranger, the levels of dopamine (多巴胺) in their brain increase while the body’s stress chemical decreases. The result is a greater sense of well-being. 37 They enable both parties to gain a more positive mindset and greater relaxation. Another effect of these casual interactions lies in their influence on how you perceive reality and respond to novel ideas. 38 Thus brief contacts with them can offer brand-new spiritual enrichment and broaden your perspectives on the world. Interestingly, research shows people may actually be more open to considering opposing viewpoints when talking to strangers than to close family members, which lays a solid foundation for in-depth and original idea exchanges. 39 They build public trust, which in turn makes social communities more closely connected. As Sandstrom, a well-known psychologist, explains, “That sense of community is a huge thing we get from talking to strangers-it’s just feeling there’s this shared humanity and that we are seen by other people and valued by other people.” This feeling helps people recognize themselves as part of a community. In a world where people often feel disconnected, these small moments remind us of the hidden bonds between ordinary individuals. A microconnection may bear lasting fruit. 40 A. They tend to slip our attention. B. Microconnections are also two-way streets. C. People are eager for connection with others. D. Brief exchanges affect more than just the two individuals. E. Such encounters bring unnoticed changes to the inner world. F. Those who you meet by chance possess diverse life experiences. G. So next time do not hesitate to offer a smile to a person around you. Molai grew up in a tiny village in India. Today, Zhao Yong’s Junzi Kitchen is reimagining how Americans experience Chinese food, 56 (offer) traditional home-style dishes through a modern fast-casual style. In 2015, Zhao opened the first Junzi Kitchen in New Haven, Connecticut. 57 began as a single storefront has since grown into a nine-location operation. “For many Americans, Chinese food means takeout,” Zhao said. “We want to show that there’s so much more for customers 58 (discover).” Junzi Kitchen highlights comforting, everyday Chinese dishes like scrambled eggs (炒蛋) with tomatoes and beef soup. “These dishes may seem ordinary to Chinese people, but for diners who have limited 59 (expose) to Chinese cuisine, they feel fresh and excited,” Zhao explained. Junzi Kitchen has adapted its kitchen operations and service model to fit American dining habits without abandoning traditions. Customers build 60 (they) meals by choosing a base of rice or noodles, adding sauces, selecting beef or pork meatballs, and finishing with vegetables. This combination of 61 (convenient) and cooking tradition has been popular with customers. A diner once 62 (write) online, “The beef shank is always perfectly cooked. I don’t usually write reviews, 63 I had to do so for Junzi.” By bringing this concept to the US, a country 64 (shape) by cultural diversity, Zhao hopes Junzi Kitchen can present a modern and 65 (include) vision of Chinese culture. It was a common weekday. Tom was hurrying to school on his bike, the cool morning wind blowing through his hair, when he spotted an old lady and a little girl standing beside a broken bicycle. Their faces were clouded by worry. It was exactly 7:30, and class would start in 20 minutes — he knew the bell would ring sharp at 7:50, and he really didn’t want to be late for Mr Brown’s math class, which always started with a quick quiz. But the lady’s helpless expression as she stared at the bike chain on the ground made him hit the brakes (刹车) and stop without hesitation. “Excuse me, madam. Do you need help?” Tom asked gently, getting off his bike and walking over. The lady nodded eagerly, her eyes lighting up with a ray of hope as she stepped forward. “The chain suddenly came off when I was riding, and I don’t know the first thing about fixing it,” she explained. “I’m supposed to take my granddaughter, Lily, to school, and I’m afraid she’ll be late for her class.” Hearing those words, Tom put down his backpack, opened it, and took out a small, old and broken tool kit (工具箱) from it, which he kept for emergency. With the basic bike repair skills his father had taught him during their weekend trips, Tom knelt down to get to work carefully. Tom’s fingers moved quickly but gently, adjusting the loose chain and tightening a loose screw (螺丝钉) that had caused the problem. The lady stood by his side, talking softly about her granddaughter, Lily, who was in Grade 3 at Green Primary School and loved drawing colorful pictures of animals and flowers. Tom listened while working, occasionally nodding. Ten minutes later, the bike was fixed. The lady thanked Tom repeatedly and offered to pay, but Tom shook his head and refused. “Just pass the kindness on,” he said, and then picked up his backpack and raced to his school, managing to arrive just before the bell rang. He didn’t have time to think about the lady again until after school. When Tom finished school, he found Lily and her grandma waiting for him. Tom refused the tool kit repeatedly, saying he just did what he should do.
