四、阅读理解
On October 29th, 2025, many celebration activities took place across the country because of an important traditional festival, China’s Chongyang Festival. It always falls on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month of China, so people also name it “the Double Ninth Festival”.
Chongyang Festival has a long history of more than 2,300 years. Historians found some records about it in ancient books of the Zhou Dynasty. But those were not its true beginning, either. Maybe someday, people will find more records in the Xia Dynasty or even the Yu Dynasty.
Chinese people did and still are doing some special things to celebrate the festival. Long ago, people usually made fires to welcome Chongyang Festival. They believed they could get more strength and protection from the Fire God by doing that. Later, when people could make more food and clothes, they weren’t afraid of the cold winter so much. ▲ Because the festival usually came with cool and windy autumn days. People began to climb mountains, wear cornel (茱萸), eat Chongyang cakes, appreciate chrysanthemums (菊花), fly kites, and so on. And as you see, Chinese people still do these today.
What’s the true meaning of Chongyang Festival? Actually, it’s not about the colourful celebrations. Ancient Chinese people celebrated it to show their respect and thanks for the Emperor of Heaven, ancestors and the old. Now, it’s also known as China’s Seniors’ Day, showing Chinese people’s respect for their family, their mother country and nature. Also, it shows how important the root of blood and culture are to every Chinese person.
So, do you usually do something for the elderly of your family at Chongyang Festival? Besides that day, are you still willing to do something f or them?

五、Hello, everyone!
I’m Li Hua. It’s my honor to speak here. We can all help share Chinese culture in English. Here’s how:
First, learn our culture well. Know the meanings behind festivals like the Spring Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Besides, use simple and clear English. There is no need to translate word by word. For example, you can say “yuanxiao means family reunion and sweet rice balls”.
Also, use photos or short videos. They make your sharing more interesting and easier to understand.
Finally, be confident and friendly. Smile when you share—it helps people feel closer to our culture.
Let’s start sharing and be proud of our culture!
Thank you!
