When I was a freshman in college, I liked to write in my free time. I even started writing personal stories online for clients (委托人). At first, everything seemed to go well. However, over time, I began to feel uneasy about my clients and the work.
In the third month, I didn’t receive my payment on time, which made me anxious. I sent an email to the client to ask what happened. But I got no reply. I sent more emails, but still no answer. Finally, I got his email, saying that my story wasn’t what he had expected. Time and time again, my already low confidence was completely destroyed. I started avoiding friends, stopped answering calls, and locked myself in my room, feeling anxious and helpless.
One night, my phone rang. It was my high school friend Lydia. I answered the call, and hearing her warm voice made me feel better. After a brief chat, I told her all my troubles. Lydia listened quietly. After a moment, she said, “You are very good at writing. Why not try something more meaningful? You like writing, so why not try writing for magazines? There are many opportunities out there.”
“Writing for magazines? I’m not sure,” I replied. “I don’t know how to write that kind of article, and I don’t know what they want.”
“You can research it yourself,” she encouraged me. “In high school, you always found ways to solve problems. Now, you are facing a problem. Why not try to find a way out for yourself? You can take the first step.” “You’re right,” I said. “I will give it a try.”
After the call, I started researching magazines online. I learned about the topics they usually covered and the types of articles that were popular.

Sam, a young violinist, was a poor college student. Determined to pursue his education, he refused to give up. On a chilly Friday evening, Sam was playing his violin at the entrance of the subway station. The sound of a violin echoed through the bustling subway station. The music was so wonderful that people slowed down to listen and put some money into his hat. Sam was playing the violin with excitement, because he could go Vienna to further study the next morning. His music was not just a performance — it was his lifeline. Every evening after classes, Sam would rush to the subway station, unpack his violin, and play until his fingers ached. The passers-by, enchanted (陶醉) by his melodies, often dropped coins into his hat. Some even stayed to listen, forgetting their hurry.
George was an office worker. As he walked home from work, he checked his lottery ticket (彩票) — his heart nearly stopped when he realized he’d won $5,000. Overjoyed, he carefully signed his name on the lottery ticket and put it into his wallet, dreaming of how he’d get the money the next morning. George whistled cheerfully as he headed to the subway to his home. Near the station entrance, a beautiful violin melody stopped him in his tracks. It was Sam, the young violinist, pouring his soul into the music. George stood still, listening to the music carefully. When the last note faded, George blinked back tears and took a $50 bill from his wallet and dropped it into Sam’s hat without hesitation.
Cold and hungry, Sam went back to his room. As Sam gathered the coins from his hat that evening, he found a piece of paper — a lottery ticket with the name “George” on it. He checked the numbers online and was amazed. It was a winning ticket worth $5,000.
Sam’s heart raced. He could finally pay his tuition (学费), but he would lose his honesty. The ticket wasn’t his, and the real winner — George — had clearly lost it. Remembering the cheerful man who’d given him $50 just now, Sam made a decision.

Axel entered my life 20 years ago, leaning against the door of Room 101. He wore sneakers three sizes too large and pants torn at the knees.
Axel made an entrance into the school of a village known for its old money, fashionable homes and golden mailboxes. He told me his last school had been in a neighboring county. “We were picking fruit,” he said frankly.
I suspected this friendly, smiling boy in rags from an immigrant family (移民家庭) didn’t know he had been thrown into a group of ten-year-old lions who had never before seen torn pants. The circle of boys tightened when Axel approached, their turned backs forming a solid wall. Despite being impolitely treated, Axel didn’t let on.There was no chip on his shoulder.
They eyed Axel doubtfully until the baseball game. With it came a bit of respect from the critics (批评家) of Room 101. In the baseball game, Charles, the most overweight child in the class, was the least athletic. After Charles’s second strike, with the eyes and groans of the class, Axel inched up and spoke quietly to the boy’s depressed back, “Forget them, kid. You can do it.” Charles warmed, smiled, stood taller and quickly struck out anyway. But at that precise moment, Axel had gently begun to change things — and us.
By autumn’s end, we had all been attracted by him. He taught us all kinds of lessons. How to call a wild turkey. How to tell whether fruit is ripe before that first bite. How to treat others, even Charles. Especially Charles. He never did use our names, calling me “Miss” and the students “kid”.
The day before winter vacation, Axel walked to my desk and bent close to my ear. “Miss, my mother said we were moving to another place, so I need to leave school earlier today to pack up.” At the news, my voice caught in my throat.
When Axel was away, I gently broke the news to the class.

I finally fell into bed at 1:20 in the morning, completely tired but happy. It was July 15, 2021 — my 31st birthday! My friends had given me a small party in the basement of my sister’s house, where I lived. Earlier that day, I’d had a strange feeling that something bad was coming. So, I prepared for a flood. We were near the Ahr River in Sinzig, Germany. It had been raining like crazy for days, and there were flood warnings, but not for our area.
Still, I put sandbags outside the garden door of my apartment and moved my electronics, clothes, and even my drum set onto tables and the couch. My friends laughed when they saw what I was doing. “Don’t worry so much!” they said. But I thought, why risk it? After they left, I tried to sleep.
Then, I woke up to a loud rushing sound, like a waterfall was right next to my bed! I swung my legs off the bed, and I was shocked. Cold water touched my knees and was rising last! “It must be a broken pipe in the bathroom,” I told myself, trying to stay calm. Shivering in the dark, I grabbed my phone and turned on the flashlight.
I walked from the bedroom to the hall. It wasn’t a broken pipe. The garden door was the problem. Water was shooting in through the cracks, going past the sandbags. Everything around me started floating: chairs. bookshelves, and pieces of my drum set. I felt a wave of panic wash over me. I knew I needed to get out, and get out now. Just then, I heard a faint meow coming from under the couch. My cat, Whiskers, was still inside! My heart leaped into my throat.

Paul, a high school exchange student, came to our school with excitement, hoping to learn about the culture and language. However, learning Chinese was much harder than he thought. The characters looked like a puzzle, and the different tones (声调) confused him. Every Chinese class was a struggle, and Paul felt disappointed. Our classmates tried to help, but it was hard for them to understand each other. One day, after a difficult lesson, Paul sat down sadly. He felt like giving up. That’s when I, his partner, decided to step in.
I loved languages and was good at making difficult things easier to understand. I could see how upset Paul was, so I went up to him. “Paul, I know Chinese is hard, but I believe you can do it,” I said. “Let’s study together.” Paul looked a little doubtful but felt grateful. We started meeting after school. I shared some tips on how to remember characters and practice tones. Slowly, Paul began to improve, but he still had trouble speaking.
One day, while we were practicing, Paul stopped and said, “I still find it difficult to open my mouth to speak with our classmates freely.” He looked discouraged. I gently reminded him, “Paul, remember why you came here. You wanted to experience China, and learning the language is part of that.” He nodded. Just then, our Chinese teacher walked by and overheard our conversation. He smiled and said, “Paul, speaking is the key to learning any language. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes.” His words gave Paul some encouragement. We continued practicing, and I had an idea. “Let’s try something different,” I suggested. “We’ll visit a local market and practice speaking with the vendors (摊贩). Maybe you’ll meet someone at the market, who can help you practice speaking in real situations. It’ll be more interesting than just studying in the classroom.”

Another wildly bright lightning along with a thunder cracked in the sky! Mary swiftly threw herself into her Mum’s arms, burying her face into her chest and trembling with fright. “I think we should leave here right away!” She murmured in a crying tone. Instantly, Dad refused her request again for the fact that the city had already been flooded severely. As he saw through their window, the almost three-meter-high floodwater had already surrounded the apartment building like a wide river, several cars floating on it just like boats.
“Black out!” Mary gasped fearfully, the wind roaring and the rain beating on the roof and windows, which made her even more nervous in the whole darkness. Mum took Mary’s hand and carefully led her to sit on the sofa, trying her best to comfort her. While she performed calmly, Mary could tell she was nervous too. “Let’s try to find a light source first and then see what other supplies we have.” Dad made an arrangement. Luckily, there was a flashlight, some packages of instant noodles, bread and some drinking water, which may help them get through the toughness for the half of the night. Without saying a single word, Dad turned on the flashlight, sat down and hugged his wife and daughter. The sudden silence in the house seemed to make the wind and rain more frightening outside. Only the light of the flashlight could now give them some warmth and a sense of little hope.
“What about Mrs. Thomson? Old and weak, she must be extremely helpless.” Mum said with great concern when she thought about their nice neighbor who lived alone upstairs of the same building. After a brief discussion, Mum and Dad decided they should go and check whether Mrs. Thomson was fire. Mary, with heavy breath and pounding heart, stood up immediately, ready to bring all their supplies to Mrs. Thomson’s house.注意:

There was a busy street corner beside a bus station. Pupils changed buses going to or from school there. This small area was anything but appealing: loud cars and buses passed by, and tall gray buildings looked like big stone giants.
Peter was one of the kids who had to wait here for nine and a half minutes each day to change buses. The station had a strong gas smell. The land nearby, maybe once a garden, was now full of trash — cans, paper bags, and chicken boxes. Weeds (草) grew wild all around them. There was nowhere nice to walk and nothing to look at. Hanging around like that each day almost drove Peter mad. Most kids wasted their time complaining (抱怨) about all the mess, but Peter felt restless. He knew he couldn’t do anything to change the bus company’s timetable and its bus routes but he could make these waiting minutes more enjoyable for himself and others.
He asked his mom for a pair of gloves and some trash bags. That week, he filled his nine minutes each day by picking up the waste. As he piled the waste into bags, “Why trouble yourself? It’ll just get dirty again!” his classmates laughed at him, casually throwing used tissues, candy wrappers and cans around. Silent for a while, Peter continued picking up the waste his classmates dropped, thinking, “It seems like an impossible dream to change this deserted land. Should I give up just as my classmates said?”
One afternoon, an elderly man approached Peter. “I used to garden here years ago,” he said, handing Peter some sunflower seeds (种子). “Perhaps you can plant these. You know, sunflowers grow easily in hard environments.” Inspired by the elderly man, Peter saw hope again. The next week, Peter occupied himself weeding the field and soon this piece of land was cleared up.

After class, John was excited that he had created a very satisfying work, thus walking to the back of the classroom to put his work away carefully. There, lying on the carpet in front of the classroom bookcase was a golden ticket! John picked it up. His heart raced wildly when he saw that the name line was blank. He couldn’t believe his luck!
The boys and girls in John’s class could earn golden tickets by doing well in their study or by being extra helpful or kind. Once a week their teacher drew a ticket out of a box on her desk and let the winner choose a prize.
Today was the golden ticket drawing, and here was another ticket, just for him! John looked around. No one else was near the ticket. All his classmates were at their desks, laughing and talking with each other. Miss Smith was engaged in grading the papers collected earlier in the morning.
John decided to write his name on the blank line. Then he could put it into the prize box with the six tickets he’d already earned. With so many chances, one of his tickets would be most likely to be picked! Then he could choose the pink toy pig for his sister’s birthday, just like he had been hoping.
He smiled and reached for the pencil in his pocket. Suddenly his fingers stopped. There was a strange feeling in his chest, and it wasn’t his heartbeat. “Finders are keepers, right?”, he wondered. He looked out of the window and tried to figure it out. On the one hand, he did find the ticket, but he hadn’t earned it. Somebody must have lost it. But on the other hand, he did need this extra ticket for his great plan!

John’s hand shook as he stared at the ticket. Memories flashed — his sister’s hopeful eyes when he promised the toy pig, the pride in his parents’ faces when he earned tickets through kindness. But this ticket felt different. He imagined Miss Smith’s disappointed gaze if she discovered his deceit. With a deep breath, he set the pencil down. “No,” he whispered, deciding to place the ticket where he’d found it. Just then, footsteps echoed through the hallway.Paragraph 2:

Lily was a bright and energetic girl with a heart full of dreams. She lived in a small and comfort town where everyone knew each other. One sunny morning, Lily’s teacher announced a school talent show. The news excited Lily immediately, as she had always loved singing and dreamed of performing on stage.
Without hesitation, Lily signed up for the show. She chose her favourite song and started practising right away. Every day after school, she would go to the park and sing her heart out, imagining the big stage and the cheering audience. However, as the days passed, Lily faced a big problem. She found it difficult to reach some of the high notes in the song. No matter how hard she tried, her voice just wouldn’t cooperate.
Lily started to feel discouraged. She thought about giving up and withdrawing from the talent show. But deep inside, she knew that giving up was not an option. She remembered the words her father always told her, “When life gives you challenges, face them with courage and never give up.”
Determined to overcome the obstacle, Lily decided to ask for help. She went to her music teacher, Mrs. Brown, and explained her problem. Mrs. Brown was very kind and patient. She listened to Lily sing and then gave her some useful tips on how to control her voice and reach the high notes. She also encouraged Lily to practise regularly and believe in herself.
With Mrs. Brown’s guidance, Lily practised even harder. She spent hours every day working on those difficult notes. Sometimes she felt tired and depressed, but she always reminded herself of her dream. Finally, the day of the talent show arrived. Lily was nervous but excited. As she stepped onto the stage and saw the audience looking at her expectantly, her heart raced. But as soon as the music started, she took a deep breath and began to sing.

When I was around nine years old, I realized my family often struggled with money. It wasn’t difficult to notice — sometimes our refrigerator was packed with food, while other times it stayed almost empty. I understood raising four children alone was challenging for my mom and her budget, but Christmas made me truly grasp how difficult things really were.
One winter evening before Christmas, Mom told us in a sad voice, “I’m afraid there won’t be Christmas this year. Santa (圣诞老人) feels terrible, and he can’t make any gifts right now.” We stared at her, surprised. No Christmas? That sounded impossible! Although I had started to doubt Santa was real, my five-year-old brother Ryan still believed completely. If Mom said Santa couldn’t provide gifts, it really meant she couldn’t. The thought of no gifts under the tree left us feeling hopeless, although Mom said she would try asking Santa to change his mind.
My sisters and I moved through daily routines like robots — attending school, doing housework, finishing homework, eating, then sleeping. Only Ryan remained cheerful, too young to understand our family’s sadness.
As Christmas drew nearer, we decorated our Christmas tree as usual in the living room despite our low spirits. On Christmas Eve, we went to bed with heavy hearts, expecting no special morning.
Then in the early morning, Ryan’s excited shouts woke me. He kept jumping around our small apartment, shouting, “Santa came! Santa came! He really came!”

It took a day’s drive, but distance was beside the point. I always enjoyed long journeys in my father’s car with my family. However, things went different that time. We were moving to a new town, not for any tourist destination, but to settle down, for my father had a new job there. My mother, sitting on the passenger seat in the front, was talking with my father. She looked excited for the coming new life. But I was down, feeling nervous about starting a new school life. Entering a new school meant adapting to a completely different environment and meeting new classmates and teachers, which I was not good at.
On my first day at the new school, I felt lost and out of place. The students already knew each other well, and they chatted happily during breaks. I missed my old friends terribly and wished I could go back to my old school. Feeling lonely. I often spent time alone during breaks and after classes, reading books in the library or drawing pictures in the art room. I missed the good days I had with my old friends and longed for that sense of belonging.
As the days went by, I still found it hard to fit in. I was shy and found it difficult to strike up conversations with my classmates. Some of the kids in my class noticed my discomfort and tried to be friendly, but I couldn’t shake off the feeling of being an outsider. I only had words with my desk mate, Alex, when necessary. Things took a turn for the worse when I knocked off Alex’s water bottle by accident, although I picked up the bottle immediately and apologized to him. He got mad at me and seemed not to forgive me. Soon I found we were avoiding each other.

Alice sat in the car while palm trees seemed to speed by the car window. Eight-year-old Alice began to get nervous, the way she always did in new surroundings. She felt a thin shine of sweat above her lip in spite of the car’s cool air. “The aquarium (水族馆) won’t be crowded, I bet, and people are going to notice me. I hate wearing this prosthesis leg (假肢).” She felt tears coming from behind her eyes. “Not being normal is the worst,” she thought to herself.
Entering the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, around a corner of a tank, she noticed an animal that looked unusual. “Is that a dolphin with a a prosthetic tail instead of a real tail?” she asked an aquarium staff member. He nodded and replied, “Yes, that’s Betty. She’s a very special dolphin.” “What happened to her?” “This girl dolphin was found off the coast of Florida, caught in a crab trap. The ropes from the trap cut off the blood circulation to her tail. So she lost her tail,” Alice caught her breath. “She’s just like me.” “But she struggled to survive. Now she wears a prosthetic tail to help her swim like a dolphin’s supposed to swim,” the staff member continued. “Every day, Betty shows us anything is possible if we believe.”
Alice felt her heart was touched. She waved at Betty. Looking at Alice, Betty raised her flippers(鰭), came to her and lifted her head. “She’s swimming right into my arms,” Alice said tearfully. They made eye contact. She seemed to be speaking to Alice: We’re the same.
Back home, all Alice talked about was Betty. For two weeks, she cried and begged her mother to take her back to Clearwater.
Unfortunately, another blow hit Alice. She fell on the hardwood floor at home and broke her other leg. Alice suffered the pain in her leg. After a through examination, the doctor explained bad news to them that she would need some surgery on her leg. Years of a living hell (地狱) came back to her.

At the beginning of this term, I found a new student in my class named Ainne Olar, who is 16 years old. She was quiet, always having lunch alone. From her parents, I learned that Ainne was born in Japan and spent most of her childhood there, and then the family moved in Canada. It wasn’t as easy as she thought. She had to learn and speak a new language to be able to communicate with other people. When at school, she tended to be alone. She usually didn’t talk to people. In class, she was not active , and always chose to shut her mouth. She didn’t join any clubs or after-school activities for a little while even though the teachers and her mom were always encouraging her.
At first, I thought maybe she was just a little shy like me when I first moved to Canada. At that time, it also wasn’t as easy as I thought, but I’ve made it until where I am now. So I had the confidence to encourage Ainne to join us.
In one class, I invited Ainne to make a short presentation. But she just stood up, speechless. Then she looked down, color rising on her face. The next class, we had a P. E. lesson in the gym. But she still didn’t join in it, just watching everyone play. Learning that she was fond of sports and was actually a very athletic and energetic person, I felt the urge to do something to help her melt into us. All these thoughts came to my head and pushed me to sit aside Ainne.

Two things changed my life: my mother and a bike basket. It’s true. I would be a different person if my mom hadn’t turned a bike basket into a life lesson I carry with me today—a lesson about the value of efforts.
My mother and father were united in their way of raising children, but it mostly fell to my mother to actually carry it out. Looking back, I honestly don’t know how she did it. Managing the family budget must have been a very hard task, but she made it look effortless. If we complained about not having what other kids owned, we’d hear something like, “I don’t care what so-and-so got for his birthday. You are not getting a TV in your room or a big party.” We had to earn our allowance (零用钱) by doing chores (家庭杂务) around the house. I can still remember how long it took to polish the legs of our coffee table. My brothers can no doubt remember hours spent cleaning the house. We had to keep track of our belongings, and if something was lost, it was not replaced.
It was one summer day. My mother drove me to the bike shop to get a tire fixed—and there it was in the window—white, shiny, plastic and decorated with flowers: The basket winked at me and I knew—I had to have it.
“It’s beautiful,” my mother said when I pointed it out to her. “What a neat basket.”
I tried to hold off at first, but then I couldn’t stand it any longer. “Mom, please can I get it? I’ll do anything, please, Mom, please?” I was desperate.
“You know,” she said, gently rubbing my back while we both stared at what I believed was the coolest thing ever, “if you save up, you could buy this yourself.”
“By the time I have earned enough, it’ll have gone! Someone else will buy it. Please, Mom, please?”
“There might be another way,” she said.

Jeremy Savage aged 17, and Ian Marshall, aged 16, were close friends. They grew up together because their parents were friends, too. Every autumn, the two families would go together on a trip to the Rocky Mountains. This year, under the guidance of park workers, they camped on the hillside. After putting up the tents, the two boys announced to climb Cathedral Mountain by themselves next morning and promised to back before dusk.
Next morning, the boys set out with a backpack packed with food and water, the autumn breeze pinking their cheeks. Along the winding path, they glanced at a sea of colourful leaves spreading beneath their feet. As they got near to the top, the path was rocky and less-traveled. After three hours, they reached the top and enjoyed the beautiful view from the mountaintop. Lost in the breathtaking scenery, they felt refreshed from tiredness. How worthwhile the trip was!
Having got enough rest, Jeremy and Ian decided to climb down. Suddenly, trouble began. On one very dangerous part of the mountain, Ian fell three metres off the side of the path. Jeremy climbed down to where Ian was and found him badly injured and not able to move.
“Help!” Jeremy shouted. NO REPLY. “Help!Help!” Jeremy almost cried. But still no replies. If only I had brought my mobile phone in the bag, Jeremy mouthed, regretful and sad. Taking a deep breath, he tried to calm himself down. Then he noticed Ian was bleeding. So he cleaned the dirt and blood from Ian’s face and hands, and then tried to help Ian stand up, but Ian’s right leg was hurting too much. They had to wait and hope that help would come. While they waited for help, Jeremy gave Ian his food and water and let him lie on his jacket. Jeremy used an extra shirt to keep Ian warm and they rested together against a rock. However, as darkness started to fall, the weather turned cold and windy and help still didn’t arrive.

It was the first week of Lily’s middle school. The bell’s ringing brought her out of her daydreaming. She nervously gathered her books, preparing to reach another classroom for the next new class.
Lily followed the other kids and rushed into the hallway. Others walked in groups, chatted, and laughed, using the break to socialize. Lily, instead, walked alone along the wall of the hallway, with her head down. She was a shy girl, afraid to speak in front of other kids, and didn’t think others would like her.
Lily finally sat in Mr. Johnson’s Language Arts class nervously. “Welcome to Language Arts,” said Mr. Johnson. He told jokes as he talked about English. Lily forgot to daydream and laughed along with the rest of the class. “We’ll have some fun with language,” he said. “Just wait and see.”
Fun was far beyond what Lily desired. She just wanted to be like other kids—running with friends in the hallway, laughing and joking between classes. Reminded of her pimply (长粉刺的) face, she felt hopeless and disappointed.
“Take out a piece of paper,” the teacher continued, when pointing at words on the blackboard. “Write for the next thirty minutes on this topic.” Lily began writing crazily as idea after idea fought for recognition in her head. The final result was a short story about a beautiful beach house. As she wrote, she could smell the salty air, hear the crashing waves and feel the pull of the sand beneath her feet. For just a moment, she forgot where she was. She was lost in the story.
“OK, pass your papers forward,” said the teacher. “Let’s see what we have.” For the rest of the class time, the teacher read each individual work aloud. Lily originally thought it would be awkward. However, she was gradually attracted by the excitement in the teacher’s voice. “He’s actually enjoying this,” she thought. When the class would be soon over, there were still fifteen students’ papers not read, including Lily’s paper. Then, Mr. Johnson announced his decision, asking these students to read their work themselves in front of the class next class.

I couldn’t forget the way I was frozen in front of the class today. My teacher, Mr. Liu had divided the class into groups to do speeches. Today was my turn. However, my hands shook so badly that I couldn’t read my notes. My voice became softer even to silence. Mr. Liu kindly ended my part of speech even though I clearly didn’t finish. He also asked me to stay after class for a moment.
“Betty, I know you are shy, but you worked so hard on this project. I’d hate to see you give up on yourself.” Mr. Liu said, “If I give you another chance until tomorrow, do you think you can find courage?” I nodded, grateful for the chance. I went as quickly as I could to my next class, keeping my head down and hoping the school day would end soon.
When I reached home that afternoon, I could see an inviting light coming from the kitchen windows. Mum was baking(烘焙). She studied my face as I came into the kitchen. “What’s wrong, Betty?”
Tears shone in my eyes. I told her the whole story. Mum was silent for a moment with her hands busy with the cake. “Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything but you can’t talk to your class?” Mum asked. She set the time right and then said, “Let me show you something.”
I followed her to the bedroom. There she showed me a book filled with pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon(丝带) that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents.
“I won it for public speaking. I started the school year as the shyest girl on the speech team, but I ended the year as the blue ribbon winner. It wasn’t easy at first—not sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and mostly I faced my tears. You just need to find your courage.”

When I was a little boy, I used to play the violin with my grandpa, whose favorite song was A Rabbit With Big Ears. “As long as you’ve got music, you’ve got good company,” my grandfather always told me.
However, I had neither after I grew up. Having left my hometown where my family and friends were, I was in a constant up-hill struggle to earn money from temporary jobs as I fought for my acting career in New York and failed again and again. Trapped in self-doubt, I felt lonely and abandoned.
“Could my dream ever come true?” I asked myself while I was wandering in a park near where I lived. Suddenly, I heard something familiar. I followed the sound to a small lake and saw some musicians playing their instruments. I sat down to admire the music quietly.
After the practice came to an end, I approached a boy who had been directing the band and said, “It is the most beautiful music I have heard!”
“Thank you!” he said, laughing. “This is just a community orchestra. If you like, you’re welcome to join. All you need is an instrument. We usually get together on weekends.”
“I’ll keep that in mind,” I thanked him and walked back home.
On the way, I passed a store and noticed a sign outside the shop: Schumacher Violin Maker. I stepped inside and saw stringed instruments hanging from the ceiling. At the corner of the store lay an old violin. It reminded me of my grandfather’s.
“It’s funny that I have never noticed this shop before,” I said to the shop owner and pointed to the old violin. “Do you happen to rent it? I’m afraid I could not afford to buy a new one.”
The shop owner shook his head, but asked me to wait for a second after I told him my story. Then he disappeared into a room in the shop.

The annual school sports day was approaching, and for Alex, a shy and slightly overweight tenth grader, it was a source of dread rather than excitement. While his classmates enthusiastically signed up for track events, Alex would quietly retreat to the library, burying himself in books about ancient history — his safe haven. His lack of athletic confidence stemmed from a childhood incident where he had stumbled and fallen during a primary school race, becoming the target of laughter. Since then, he had avoided any physical competition.
Mr. Davies, the perceptive PE teacher, noticed Alex’s pattern of avoidance. One afternoon, he approached Alex in the library. “I’m forming a relay team for the sports day,” Mr. Davies said, his voice calm but firm. “It’s not about being the fastest. It’s about trust, teamwork, and finishing what you start. I believe you have something to contribute.” Alex was taken aback. No teacher had ever expressed such faith in him regarding sports. After a long pause, driven by a mix of fear and a flicker of curiosity, he agreed.
The following weeks were challenging. The relay practices were grueling. Alex’s breathing was heavy, his coordination awkward compared to his teammates — James, Sarah, and Liam, who were all natural athletes. Yet, they never complained. Instead, James would run alongside him during extra practice, Sarah shared tips on breathing rhythm, and Liam always offered a fist bump of encouragement after each attempt. Their patience and unwavering support slowly chipped away at Alex’s wall of self-doubt. He wasn’t just learning to pass a baton; he was learning to trust and be trusted.
The day of the sports day dawned bright and clear. The atmosphere was electric with cheers and music. As Alex stood at his relay position, the third leg, his heart hammered against his ribs. The noise of the crowd seemed to fade into a distant buzz. He watched as Sarah sped toward him, baton outstretched.

“Is the goose going to be OK?” I pressed my face against the incubator (孵化器)’s cool glass, breath fogging a small circle as I tried to see the tiny bird inside.
“I’m not entirely sure, Nate,” Mom said, her voice soft as she opened the door gently. “Its neck appears to be bent. Let’s take it out for a closer look.” The baby goose felt soft and light in my hands. Mom weighed it: 2.9 ounces (盎司), a baby boy.
Mom worked for a wildlife rescue, and our farm took care of injured birds. But this little guy was special: a farmer had given me the egg a month earlier.
“Promise to care for him,” Mom said, handing me a small notebook. I wrote: Boy goose. Heavier than a tennis ball, lighter than a baseball.
Under the warm lamp, I noticed that he had only one eye. And one leg was shorter than the other. He wobbled (摇摇晃晃) and fell down, but always got back up.
“Did you see that?” I asked Mom.
Mom smiled. “Sure I did.”
“What’s that word you taught me? For someone who never gives up even when it’s hard?”
“Scrappy?” she said.
“Yeah, Scrappy. That should be his name.” I wrote in my notebook: Name: Scrappy. But Mom said,“ Nate, try not to hope too much — he might never fly.”
Days turned to weeks. I fed and gave water to Scrappy, keeping track of his weight and habits in the notebook. He grew big and learned how to balance on his legs, chasing bugs (虫子) by the pond. One late summer morning, I wrote down: Catches bugs skillfully. Still can’t fly. More care needed.
Just then, a group of Canada geese honked (鸣叫) overhead. Scrappy lifted his head, single eye fixed on the sky and wings flapping (拍打) anxiously. “Oh, you want to fly” I said, not sure what to do. Mom said Scrappy may never fly. But then I had an idea.

1.One possible version:
Then, a thought flashed through my mind. What if I write about my own struggles as a college writer? Many students might relate to self-doubt and rejection. With trembling fingers, I searched “student writing magazines” and discovered New Voices Quarterly, a publication dedicated to authentic youth stories. Their latest theme was “Overcoming Creative Blocks” — perfect for my story. That night, I outlined an article blending my client disasters with hard-won lessons, tentatively titled “From Rejection to Redemption: A Writer’s Journey”. I included practical tips I wished I’d known earlier, like how to vet clients and set clear expectations.
When I finally finished the article on my own experience, I was excited to send it out. Two weeks later, the editor gave a surprising reply: “Your raw honesty is exactly what our readers need. Would you consider expanding this into a monthly column?” That acceptance letter became my turning point. Readers’ messages poured in — some shared similar struggles, others thanked me for the hope. I realized that meaningful writing wasn’t about pleasing clients, but connecting with real people. My dorm walls no longer felt like a hopeless prison.
2.The next day, the violinist came to the entrance again. He held the lottery ticket tightly, scanning the crowd anxiously. Just as he was about to lose hope, he spotted George hurrying over, looking upset. “Mr. George?” Sam called out. George turned, surprised. Sam handed him the ticket, explaining he’d found it in his hat. George was astonished and grateful, his eyes shining with tears. “I couldn’t keep it. Your kindness means more to me than this money.” Sam added.
George took it and danced happily. He insisted on sharing the prize money with Sam, but Sam refused. Then George said in a trembling voice, “You’ve taught me a valuable lesson about honesty.” They hugged, their hearts filled with joy and gratitude. From that day on, Sam and George became close friends, supporting each other in their lives. Sam achieved his musical dream in the end and his music grew even more beautiful, while George found new meaning in his life, knowing that kindness and honesty could change the world.

When Axel was away, I gently broke the news to the class. A stunned silence fell over Room 101. Charles looked especially sad, his shoulders dropping. One student murmured, “But he taught me turkey calls!” Then came another voice, “Who’ll help me with peaches?” Suddenly, Charles sprang to his feet and yelled, “We can’t let him leave like this!” Others nodded hard, voices mixed, “Yeah, we should do something for him!” Watching them silently and smilingly, I felt a sense of warmth and pride sweeping over me. Within minutes, they made a decision: everyone would bring something meaningful by tomorrow morning.
The next morning, to Axel’s surprise, piles of gifts were lying on his desk. Colorfully wrapped presents, handmade cards... Slowly approaching, with trembling hands, Axel picked up a card signed by the whole class, tears rolling down his cheeks, “Thanks, kids.Really.” Charles stepped forward and hugged him tightly, saying, “Thank you, Axel. Friends never say goodbye!” All others gathered around, eyes filled with tears. Axel looked around at the faces, the once unfriendly “lions” softened. I knew, in that pile of gifts hid the greatest one — Axel’s kindness and love, which changed Room 101’s lions.
4.One possible version:
Thinking fast, I knew I couldn’t leave Whiskers behind. I took a deep breath, trying to calm down as I stepped into the cold water. It was hard to move, but I kept going, “Whiskers!” I called out, my voice trembling. She was under the couch, her eyes wide with fear. I reached out, my fingers brushing against her fur. She hesitated for a second, then leaped into my arms. I could feel her heart pounding against my chest. “It’s okay, girl,” I whispered, holding her tightly. The current was strong, pulling at my legs, but I pushed forward, my muscles straining with each step. With one last effort, I lifted myself up, holding Whiskers, and climbed onto the table, then onto the windowsill. “We’ll be okay,” I murmured, more to myself than to her. The night was dark and terrifying.
On the windowsill (窗台沿), we suddenly saw flashing lights. My heart leaped with hope. Was someone coming to save us? “Help! We’re here!” I shouted, waving one arm while holding Whiskers with the other. The lights grew closer, reflected on the rising floodwaters. It was a rescue boat! It edged closer to the window. A voice called out, “Are you alright?” Tears streamed down my face, partly from the rain, partly from relief. “Yes! Please, help us!” Shivering, I cried, knowing that we were going to be okay. They threw a rope, and I grabbed it and climbed into the boat with Whiskers. I felt so relieved and a wave of gratitude washing over me. I called my sister telling her we were safe. Even though I lost many things that night, I realized what really mattered: being alive and together, along with the wisdom and courage to face whatever comes our way.
5.One possible version:
At the market, Paul was nervous but excited. The lively atmosphere filled with colorful stalls and enthusiastic vendors immediately drew him in. I encouraged him to order some fruits in Chinese. At first, his pronunciation was shaky, but the elderly vendor, noticing his effort, patiently corrected him with a warm smile. By the third stall, Paul was confidently bargaining for souvenirs using simple sentences. A tea shop owner even invited us to taste different varieties, explaining their cultural significance in slow Mandarin. That day, Paul didn’t just practice language — he discovered how communication bridges cultures.
Weeks later, our Chinese teacher announced there would be a class speech on Chinese culture. To everyone’s surprise, Paul volunteered immediately. He spent days preparing, incorporating market experiences into his speech about “The Beauty of Daily Communication”. When he stood before the class, his tones were clear, and his gestures lively as he described how a street food vendor taught him the difference between baozi and jiaozi. The classroom erupted in applause. Later, the teacher praised his progress as “the magic of courage meeting opportunity,” and Paul whispered to me, “Now I understand mistakes are just steps to success.”
6. In the darkness, they supported each other and went upstairs step by step with the light of the flashlight. The water had already seeped into the stairwell, making each step slippery and dangerous. Mary clung tightly to her parents’hands, her heart pounding with a mix of fear and determination. When they finally reached Mrs. Thomson’s door, Dad knocked gently but firmly. After what felt like an eternity, the door creaked open, revealing Mrs. Thomson’s frightened face. “Thank goodness you’re here!” she whispered, her voice trembling. They quickly helped her gather her essential belongings and led her back downstairs to their apartment, where they all huddled together, finding comfort in each other's presence.
Suddenly, a bunch of searching light from a rescue boat flashed across Mrs. Thomson’s window. “Look!” Mary exclaimed, pointing excitedly. Dad grabbed the flashlight and waved it back and forth, signaling for help. Within minutes, they heard the sound of voices and the gentle lapping of the boat against the building. The rescue team arrived just in time, helping them all into the boat and to safety. As they sailed away from the flooded apartment, Mary looked back, feeling grateful for the bravery and love that had kept them together through the storm.

Next, he took out the sunflower seeds offered by the elderly man. Peter knelt on the broken ground, loosened the soil, and carefully planted the seeds. His classmates laughed again, “Flowers can’t grow here.” But Peter watered the seeds every day. Days later, small green plants came up from the dry ground. Everyone was surprised and stopped laughing. When a hot wave hit, Peter skipped his lunch to cover the plants with cardboard. One day, a girl who used to litter brought water for the plants. Soon, other kids helped too, watering the young flowers while they waited for buses.
More kids began to help take care of the plants. Their laughter mixed with the sound of water cans. The sunflowers grew taller each day. At the end of summer, they were taller than the kids, with big yellow flowers facing the sun, as if waving at the buses and the kids around them. Butterflies flew among the flowers, and kids’ laughter filled the corner. They called the garden “Peter’s Patch”. The gas smell and traffic noise were still there, but the corner changed — it was now full of life, a place which the kids felt proud of, showing that even small changes can make a big difference.

Paragraph 1:
John’s hand shook as he stared at the ticket. Memories flashed — his sister’s hopeful eyes when he promised the toy pig, the pride in his parents’ faces when he earned tickets through kindness. But this ticket felt different. He imagined Miss Smith’s disappointed gaze if she discovered his deceit. With a deep breath, he set the pencil down. “No,” he whispered, deciding to place the ticket where he’d found it. Just then, footsteps echoed through the hallway.Paragraph 2:
Spotting the blank line, Miss Smith asked John what he was doing there. Not daring to look straight into her eyes, John said “I almost took a ticket that wasn’t mine.”, his neck growing hot under his collar. “Honesty is the best prize.” Instead of scolding, Miss Smith pressed the golden ticket into John’s palm. The sunlight filtered through the windows to cast golden patterns on the carpet like the ticket glowing in his palm. That evening, John placed the ticket into the box. He realized the sweetest rewards are not found in shortcuts.

Lily poured her heart and soul into the song. Standing on the stage, her eyes closed, she swung gently with the music. Her voice resounded powerfully and obviously, hitting every note perfectly, especially those high notes that once troubled her. Veins slightly bulged on her neck as she reached for the climax part, and her hands took fast hold on the microphone. The audience sat out of their mind, their eyes fixed on her. When she finished, the whole auditorium erupted into thunderous applause. Lily’s face lit up, and she felt a sense of pride and achievement wash over her, a huge smile spreading across her cheeks.
After the show, Lily’s friends and teachers crowded around her. Her friends, eyes wide with admiration, said, “Lily, that was incredible! Every move was so accurate and full of emotion.” Teachers nodded in agreement, adding, “Your devotion really shone through. The countless hours of practice were evident.” Lily stood there, a shy smile on her face. Glancing around at their supportive faces, she truly understood that through her own hard work, never-giving-up spirit and the encouragement she’d received, she was capable of reaching any goal. This performance wasn’t just an event; it was a life-changing lesson she’d treasure forever.
10.One possible version:
I rushed into the living room, feeling shocked at what I saw. Under the Christmas tree lay several beautifully wrapped gifts, shining in the soft morning light. My sisters stood frozen, their eyes wide with disbelief, while Ryan danced around the tree, holding a toy truck tightly in his arms, laughing like it was the happiest day of his life. And there by the window, Mom stood quietly, with her face lighting up with a happy smile. For a moment, I stared at the gifts, wondering how the magic had happened.
Suddenly I noticed the silver necklace (项链) around Mom’ s neck was gone! It was then that I understood everything — she had sold the treasured necklace Grandma had given her, which she had never taken off, just to bring us Christmas joy. Tears filled my eyes as I rushed to hug Mom. “Thank you, Mom,” I whispered. She held me tightly and said softly, “Merry Christmas, my dear.” In my eyes, the gifts were not just toys — they were symbols of Mom’s love. That Christmas, I learned true magic didn’t come from Santa. It came from a mother’s heart.
11.However, I was assigned to pair up with Alex to design a poster. Reluctantly, we started working together. I was worried that working with Alex would be very difficult because of our previous relationship. But to my surprise, as the work progressed, we found that we shared many common interests. We put a lot of efforts into the drawings and texts, and finally we completed a quite outstanding poster. Alex seemed to forgive me. He appreciated my efforts and began to care about my feelings. The teacher highly praised our work and our classmates were amazed at the picture on the poster.
Alex proudly introduced that the fantastic picture was drawn by me. I smiled shyly but happily as my classmates crowned me and gave me a thumbs-up. Slowly but surely, I started feeling more comfortable in my new school. I made new friends, including Alex, and began to participate in activities in and after classes. By the end of the school year, I had fully adapted to the new environment. Moving to a new town was not only challenging, but it also opened up a world of opportunities and new experiences for me.

“How can I persuade Alice to undergo the surgery?” Alice’s mom said to herself. Then she had an idea and she decided to take Alice back to Clearwater. On arriving at Clearwater, Alice couldn’t wait to see Betty, the lovely dolphin that comforted her and boosted her mood. As Alice’s mother pushed the wheelchair to Betty, she raised her flippers, came to her and lifted her head. Alice couldn’t hold back her excitement. Looking at the girl, Betty seemed to say, “Go and have the operation.” Alice absolutely knew what that caring eyes were conveying, so she decided to keep a more optimistic state of mind.
Encouraged by Betty, Alice changed her mind and did what her mother and doctor had told her to. Finally came the day when Alice was in the hospital again. Though feeling nervous and afraid of the pain the surgery might bring, Alice faced it bravely. The operation was a success. Her mother took her to Clearwater the day when she was discharged from hospital. Inspired by Betty’s swimming like a normal dolphin, Alice practiced hard to walk. Her confidence has been improved as she gradually recovers. She has no idea what future holds for her but she will do anything to have a better look at this wonderful world.

“Hello, Ainne, would you like to join us playing basketball?”I smiled. Knowing Ainne played well, I tried to persuade her to be brave. However, she shook her head and smiled shyly. Then I told her I was a new comer once and could understand how she was feeling. I hoped she could step out of the comfort zone and be more active. She was moved and told me the reason why she always chose to shut her mouth was that she was not very confident to speak English in front of others. I encouraged her to seize every chance to practice it.
The next day, Ainne volunteered to come to the platform to make a presentation. “Hello, boys and girls, I’m Ainne from Japan. Before my presentation, I’d like to express my thanks to you all. Especially Ms. Lee.” Then she turned to me, with a bright smile spreading on her face. How much she longed to share experiences with her classmates. Getting widely recognized, Ainne was excited with tears. Later, she was a participant in every discussion in class and joined an after-school sports club with new friends. She tasted the sweet spoils of confidence.
14. “I’ll buy it now but you only get it after 3 weeks of double chores,” Mom explained. I agreed immediately and Mom bought the flowery basket and kept it somewhere I could’t find. Each day, I finished my new routine of double household chores with passion and enthusiasm. Each night, I crossed off another day on the calender as I counted down the days. As the days passed, the basket seemed to become even more beautiful in my imagination. The extra chores didn’t bother me. The basket was worth it. The anticipation grew stronger as the days ticked down.
Finally, I got my dream basket, but soon I sadly found the same basket on others’ bikes! So shocked and upset was I that I immediately went home to report this disaster to my Mom. Seeing my sad face, she gently wiped away my tears. Holding my little face in her warmth hands, she spoke out what has become the lesson I still carry with me today. “Your basket is not the same basket. It’s unique because it was obtained by all your worthwhile effort and waiting.”

In low spirits, Ian told Jeremy to leave him and go back to their parents. But Jeremy still did not leave. He thought it was too dangerous for Ian to be alone on such a cold, windy night. Cold autumn wind made Jeremy shivering. Disappointment welled up inside him. Jeremy knew he had to do something other than staying still. Weighing the pros and cons, Jeremy finally decided that the only way to help his friend was to carry him down the mountain. So, Jeremy carried Ian on his back and they started the long climb back to the campsite. But the mountainous path was even tougher and more rocky for Jeremy to climb down, let alone Ian was on his back.
Exhausted, Jeremy felt hopeless again with Ian on his back. Ian begged Jeremy to leave him alone again. Jeremy felt a surge of bitterness and shook his head without a word. Suddenly, a beam of light flashed. Great joy consumed them and Jeremy shouted his loudest “help”. Out came a park worker with a flashlight, who was searching for the boys. With the help of the worker, they were rescued and reunited with their concerned parents. “I will always remember what Jeremy did for me,” said Ian afterwards. “He saved my life. That is the greatest thing that a person can do for his friend.”

A week later, the bell rang and the Language Arts class began again. Lily was nervous with her head down. After other students finished reading the papers one by one, finally, it was Lily’s turn. Frozen with fear, Lily stood in front of the class, with her hands holding her paper, shaking. Seeing it, Mr. Johnson told a funny joke, which made all laugh. Feeling more relaxed, Lily began reading. She was so focused that she felt she was alone. She didn’t notice that her story soon attracted all her classmates who sat up straight, without any chatting. They were lost in her fantastic story.
After Lily finished her reading, the clapping from her classmates continued for a long time. Lily was shocked. When she raised her head, she found everyone staring at her excitedly. Lily finally smiled. She found everyone in the class responded to her story positively. After that class, Lily slowly lifted her head while walking. Later, she kept writing. And she began speaking in front of people and enjoyed it. A braver and more confident girl appeared. And she was grateful to Mr. Johnson who believed in every student.
17. Hearing Mum’s words, I stared at the valuable blue ribbon, lost in thought. What was it that made me so afraid? But still no answer came out. Soon the cake was finished. We went back to the kitchen for the baked cake. Mum cut a slice for the sweet cake and handed it to me, saying, “You can make it.” I raised the warm cake to my mouth. It was so delicious and fragrant. Suddenly I knew where I could find my courage. It was from my mum’s love.
The next day I walked to the front of the classroom to give my speech. Seeing the quiet classroom, I couldn’t help but feel nervous again, my mind going blind and my voice trembling. Then I saw the blue ribbon which my mum tied to my wrist. I thought of Mum’s warm cake, her love and her inspiring experience. Then I took a deep breath and gave my speech with confidence. This time there was no fear any more but a big success and a round of applause.
18.One possible version:
I stood there, wondering what the elderly man would do. A few minutes later, he returned with a case and then put the violin inside. “Take it,” he said. “Go and make your music.” I stood there, surprised, as he handed it to me. Holding the violin, I felt like I’d just woken up from a dream. But it was real—as real as the strings I was touching. Having said thanks again and again, I headed home, with my heart pounding with expectations for the incoming weekend.
Soon came the weekend and I joined the musicians by the lake. As we played together, I immediately felt at home. When we were performing in the park, the bystanders cheered and burst into thunderous applause. It was really wonderful to be surrounded by my new friends and I was reminded of what my grandfather had said, “As long as you’ve got music, you’ve got good company.” At the moment, I was full of gratitude to the owner of the violin store.
19. Alex’s palm was sweaty as he reached back for the baton. His fingers trembled slightly, and he almost fumbled it, but Sarah’s firm grip guided it into his hand. “You’ve got this!” she shouted, her voice cutting through his nerves. With a deep breath, Alex started running, his legs aching but his mind focused on the baton in his hand. He could hear his teammates cheering loudly, and for the first time, he didn’t feel ashamed of his pace. He pushed through the tiredness, passing the baton to Liam smoothly, a small smile escaping his lips as he did so.
Standing with his team after the race, a profound sense of peace replaced the earlier anxiety. They didn’t win first place, but no one looked disappointed. James clapped him on the shoulder, Sarah gave him a big hug, and Liam high-fived him excitedly. “You were amazing out there,” Mr. Davies said, approaching with a proud grin. Alex looked at his teammates, his eyes warm with gratitude. He realized that sports weren’t about being the best; they were about courage and teamwork. For the first time in years, he felt proud of his effort — and he knew he would never hide from a challenge again.

Para.1: “Follow me.” I put the notebook into my pocket and led Scrappy into a nearby field. I taught him to fly by flapping my arms like a clumsy bird, yelling “Like this — flap, flap, flap!” Scrappy must have thought it was fun. He wobbled after me, his wings flapping so fast. Each time we ran downhill, I would sneak glances at his feathers catching the wind — until one afternoon, his wings suddenly lifted him off the ground. He soared over my head, circling the barn with a honk that sounded like laughter. When he landed with a big bang, I wrote down on a new page: Can fly! Need graceful landings. Scrappy bit my shirt sleeve, and his one eye seemed to tell me everything will turn out better.
Para.2: One day, Mom stood there in surprise as Scrappy flew around the farm. Her coffee cup shook, and some coffee spilled on the porch. “He... he is really flying,” she said softly, her voice shaking. Scrappy flew low over our heads. His wings moved up and down unevenly, but he still stayed in the air. The sight before her eyes left mom utterly astonished for she used to say injured birds hardly ever learn to fly again. “You were right,” she said, petting Scrappy’s feathers. “He is stronger than we thought.” That evening, we put a new photo on the barn wall: in the sunset, Scrappy was flying over the haystack. Then I smiled, notebook open to a page that read “2.9 ounces — sky conqueror.”

【答案】One possible version:

【答案】The next day, the violinist came to the entrance again.

The next morning, to Axel’s surprise, piles of gifts were lying on his desk.

【答案】

【答案】One possible version:

【答案】One possible version:

【答案】 In the darkness, they supported each other and went upstairs step by step with the light of the flashlight.

【答案】

【答案】

【答案】One possible version:

【答案】However, I was assigned to pair up with Alex to design a poster.

She started fearing surgery again and refused to go to hospital for treatment.

【答案】One possible version:

【答案】 “I’ll buy it now but you only get it after 3 weeks of double chores,” Mom explained.

【答案】One possible version:

【答案】 Hearing Mum’s words, I stared at the valuable blue ribbon, lost in thought.

【答案】One possible version:

【答案】 Alex’s palm was sweaty as he reached back for the baton.

【答案】One possible version
