根据第二段中“However,.I didn't hear a word he said.My complete
attention was on Luke who had stormed out of the classroom.”

thanked him for his excellent acting job.We sat in stunned(震惊的)silence."可知,学生们
在得知这是一场表演后是一片震惊的安静,所以他们最可能是感到困惑,无法立刻反应。
26.D推理判断题。Dr Martin通过一场精心设计的课堂“冲突”给作者上了一堂关于如何应
对课堂干扰的课,说明他的教学方法很有创意(creative),并且这一课对作者产生了深远的
影响,说明他的教学方法富有教益(instructive)。
27.C推理判断题。根据全文,尤其是最后一段中“Every time I lost the class's attention,I
flashed back to the lesson Dr Martin taught me that day.I gave my students five minutes
to discuss what had happened and then said cheerfully,Let's get back to today's

根据第二段中“Unfortunately,the animals are rapidly decreasing.
Researchers estimate that every year,up to one in three hedgehogs from local populations

understand whether it would be possible to design sound repellents(g驱避装置)targeted
specifically at hedgehogs..”

The Elite College Students Who
Can't Read Books
根据第四段中“While Horowitch's article received criticism for her
suggested cause, most people did not generally try to argue against the idea that students
are having more trouble with classic literature than in past years..”
根据最后一段中“I believe that if we want to start reading more,we
should try to make reading more enjoyable. The fast feel-good rush from using social
media leaves much academic reading in the dust, but reading at any level, including for
entertainment,should be encouraged.”
The Elite College Students Who Can't
Read Books
Why Can't Students Read as Before?

We Can Look Good in Proper Ways
Recently, some students in my class try to look cool by losing weight in extreme ways or
over-focusing on outfits.
In my opinion, true coolness comes from self-confidence and inner qualities. We can build
a healthy lifestyle-like exercising regularly,eating balanced meals,and getting enough
sleep-which naturally keeps us fit and energetic. Also, wearing clean and tidy clothes with a
personal touch shows good taste.
Let's remember that true beauty shines when we are both healthy and happy.I hope
everyone can find their own proper way to look good!
第二节
The next morning, with shaking hands,Tom picked up the phone and called Alex. His
heart pounded as he heard Alex's voice on the other end."Alex,I need to tell you
something,"Tom stammered. He told how he had panicked after discovering the flaw in his
own project, how he had secretly copied Alex's design, and how ashamed he felt. There was a
long silence on the line. Finally,Alex spoke,"Tom,I'm glad you told me the truth."Tom
apologized repeatedly and said,"The award I got actually belongs to you."
Tom knew that simply apologizing wasn't enough he had to make things right publicly.
The next Monday,Tom walked into the principal's office and asked to speak with the judges.
He explained everything honestly, returned the first-place medal, and requested that Alex
receive the award instead. The judges were surprised but admired his courage.Later,Tom
publicly apologized during the morning assembly. All eyes turned to him as he asked for
everyone's attention, but in a nervous but determined voice,he explained his dishonesty to the
shocked teachers and students.Although he lost the prize and praise,he regained his
integrity.

It was in my second year in college. One day,Dr Martin was lecturing, and we were
taking notes.Suddenly he stopped and fixed a cold stare on Luke beside me.Luke stared
back, and crossed his arms over his chest.
“What is your problem, young man?”the professor tried to calm down.“You,”Luke

surprise.I had never seen such a scene."Get out of my class!"Dr Martin thundered.Luke
put away his books and headed toward the classroom door. The door shut, and Dr Martin

When it comes to how animals use ultrasound(),the chances are you immediately
think of bats and their amazing echolocation ability. However, researchers have discovered
another animal, the European hedgehog ()can also hear ultrasound, with great
significance for its conservation.
The cute small nighttime insect-eaters will turn into a spiny ball when they feel
threatened.Unfortunately, the animals are rapidly decreasing.Researchers estimate that
every year,up to one in three hedgehogs from local populations die on roads.
"It would make a huge positive impact on hedgehog conservation if we could reduce the
number of roadkills, says Sophie Rasmussen, hedgehog researcher and conservationist at the
University of Oxford."Therefore,I decided to investigate hedgehog hearing to understand
whether it would be possible to design sound repellents(g驱避装置)targeted specifically at
hedgehogs..”
Rasmussen and her co-workers worked with 20 hedgehogs from wildlife rescue centers in
Denmark. They played brief bursts of sounds on a speaker, while small electrodes placed on
the hedgehogs recorded electrical signals fired by their hearing brainstem, shooting between
their inner ear and brain. The researchers found that the brainstem fired electrical signals
when the sound was across a range of 4-85 kilohertz(kHz),and had a maximum sensitivity
of about 40 kHz.Given that ultrasound refers to sound waves over 20 kHz,this means that
hedgehogs can hear ultrasound sound waves at least up to 85 kHz.Humans can hear around
20 Hz to 20 kHz.So,hedgehogs hear such high-frequency ultrasound that it is way above
humans,cats and dogs.
"I am really hoping that the car industry will reach out so that we can cooperate on the
research to design these sound repellents, which need to be effective and unharmful,"
Rasmussen continues."Because now the real work starts:Which sounds will actually deter
the hedgehogs? Will the hedgehogs return to the garden/road when the repellents are not
playing or will we risk causing harm to hedgehogs?"she says."And how often should the
sounds change to avoid having the hedgehogs get used to the sound and start ignoring it?"
28.What is mainly implied about hedgehogs in paragraph 2?
A.They are inactive at night.
B.They threaten many animals.
C.They cause trouble for drivers.
D.They are in need of protection.
29.What did Rasmussen and her co-workers do for their research?
A.They conducted a hearing test on hedgehogs.
B.They compared hedgehogs'hearing with bats'.
C.They designed sound repellents for hedgehogs.
D.They observed hedgehogs'behavior in the wild.
30.What does the underlined word "deter"in the last paragraph mean?
A.Follow up.
B.Appeal to.
C.Kill off.
D.Drive away.
31.What is the text mainly about?
A.A proposal.
B.A discovery.
C.A phenomenon.

In October 2024,The Atlantic published an article by Rose Horowitch titled The Elite
College Students Who Can't Read Books. The article discusses the phenomenon of American
students'decreasing reading stamina()and ability.Professors are quoted saying that the
current generation of college students cannot keep up with traditional reading programs.
Horowitch blames much of this failure on misguided reforms carried out in middle and high
school in America.
These education reforms primarily use standardized tests as a way to measure success,
which probably encourages Goodharting,or the practice of changing one's actions to do well
on a specific measure at the cost of other standards of achievement. If students'scores on a
test that only includes short passages decide how good a teacher is,there are many reasons to
"teach to the test"and focus on short versions instead of full-length books.
Notably, students who read for fun tend to do better in all subjects. However, teachers
frequently find that getting students to read assigned books is much harder than assigning
them.Furthermore, many students find they can do well enough in their classes without
reading by looking up summaries or borrowing a friend's notes.
While Horowitch's article received criticism for her suggested cause, most people did not
generally try to argue against the idea that students are having more trouble with classic
literature than in past years. In fact, more people brought up many other possible reasons for
decreasing reading comprehension, including the fact that, with access to the Internet and
large-language models like ChatGPT,cheating is now easier and more common.
We want to value literacy skills and encourage people to read more. However, books are
banned at a rate of 100 books a month, and budget cuts for public libraries are proposed year
after year, often leading to fewer available services and reduced hours. As a member of the
TikTok generation,I believe that if we want to start reading more,we should try to make
reading more enjoyable. The fast feel-good rush from using social media leaves much academic
reading in the dust, but reading at any level, including for entertainment, should be
encouraged.
32.What does Goodharting tend to result in?
A.Preferring short passages to long-form content.
B.Encouraging students to read for fun more often.
C.Reducing the use of standardized tests in schools.
D.Improving overall achievement across all subjects.
33.What's most people's general attitude to American students'reading performance?
A.Unclear.
B.Indifferent.
C.Disapproving.
D.Hopeful.
34.What does the author try to do in the last paragraph?
A.Issue some warnings.
B.Make a suggestion.
C.Confirm an assumption.
D.Question policies'effects.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.How Should Students Read?
B.The Rise of Digital Learning
C.The Challenge of Education Reforms
D.Why Can't Students Read as Before?

Tom was a hard-working senior high school student who always dreamed of winning the
annual science fair. For months,he had been working on his project-a creative water
filtration()system that could help communities with limited access to clean water. His
best friend,Alex, was also participating in the competition with an impressive robotics
project. The two had always supported each other, but deep down,Tom felt the pressure to
win, especially since his family had sacrificed()so much for his education.
Three days before the competition,Tom accidentally discovered a serious flaw()in
his experiment. His filtration system didn't work as consistently as he had claimed in his
initial report.Panicked and desperate,he made a terrible decisionhe secretly copied a small
but crucial design element from Alex's project notebook, which Alex had left open on his desk
during a study session at school.Tom improved his own design just enough to make it look
original but effective.
On Friday, the science fair arrived.Tom's project worked perfectly, and the judges were
impressed. He won first place, while Alex received second.During the award ceremony,Tom
saw his parents smiling at him with pride, but he also noticed Alex's confused expression.
However,Alex quickly composed himself and gave Tom a look of praise.
After the ceremony,Alex walked over and suggested celebrating Tom's victory together.
But Tom couldn't bring himself to meet Alex's sincere eyes.Every word of congratulations
felt like a knife twisting in his chest.
That night back home,Tom couldn't sleep. The medal on his desk felt like a weight
rather than an honor. He knew what he had done was wrong, not only to Alex but to
himself. His parents had taught him that honesty was more valuable than any prize.
