When artificial intelligence (AI) makes life easier than ever before, perhaps the question we should ask ourselves is: “What is the true value of human beings?” A group of students in southern China offered their answers, moving millions of people.
Yu Yaxuan, a Chinese language teacher, recently collected 54 surveys from her students, each asking only one question: “If you had to choose one Chinese character (汉字) to prove you’re not AI, what would it be?” The answers surprised Yu.
Two students offered opposite answers: “hurry” and “slow”.
“Robots don’t understand why humans are always in a hurry,” one student wrote. “It takes 30 minutes for a hospital to give back test results, so why do patients check them every few minutes? Our experience of time is shaped by feelings.”
Another student, Wu Ming, argued the opposite. “When we think of speed, we think of AI, yet humans want to slow down with those they care about,” Wu wrote. “AI is always going for speed and correct results, but I wish for humans to walk slowly, speak slowly and grow up slowly. I like to spend time on things that make life beautiful.”
Other students chose words such as “doubt”. “Will AI ever doubt its maker?” one student asked. Other answers included “courage”, “hate”, “regret”, “love” and “hurt”.
“What truly moves people may not be one class, but the soft lights of humanity (人性) that technology can’t take away,” Yu said.
15. What did Yu Yaxuan ask her students to do in the survey?
A. To choose a Chinese character to show they are human.
B. To create one character with the help of AI.
C. To explain how AI changed people’s everyday lives.
D. To compare the working speeds of humans and AI.
16. Why did the student mention the hospital example in Paragraph 4?
A. To explain the difficulties many patients are facing.
B. To praise the workers’ great working speed.
C. To prove that AI can check results faster than humans.
D. To show that feelings influence how we experience time.
17. What does Wu Ming want people to do?
A. Improve their working speeds. B. Slow down and enjoy life more.
C. Depend more on AI in daily life. D. Keep going for correct results.
18. What can we infer (推断) about AI from Yu’s words from the last paragraph?
A. AI will be widely used in even more fields soon.
B. Technology can understand human feelings well.
C. It is impossible for AI to have doubts about its maker.
D. Human warmth cannot be taken away by technology.
【答案】15. A 16. D 17. B 18. D
【解析】
【导语】本文讲述一位语文老师让学生选一个汉字区分人类与人工智能,学生们给出了忙、慢、爱、遗憾等答案,展现人工智能无法拥有的人性的温暖。
【15题详解】
根据第二段“each asking only one question: ‘If you had to choose one Chinese character (汉字) to prove you’re not AI, what would it be?’”,老师要求学生选一个汉字来证明自己是人类。
【16题详解】
根据第四段“Our experience of time is shaped by feelings.”,我们对时间的体验是由情感塑造的。
‘...I wish for humans to walk slowly, speak slowly and grow up slowly. I like to spend time on things that make life beautiful.”,可知她希望人们慢下来享受生活。
【18题详解】
根据最后一段“‘the soft lights of humanity that technology can't take away’ Yu said”,人类的温暖是技术无法取代或夺走的。
C
Have you ever wondered why Chinese say maidongxi (buy things) instead of mainanbei, shangcesuo (go to the bathroom) instead of xiacesuo, and yijianxiangzuo (disagree) instead of yijianxiangyou? Directions in Chinese characters hide rich history and culture.
East or West
A theory says that in the Tang Dynasty, there were two popular markets in Chang’an. One was called the East Market, and the other was called the West Market. When shopping, people usually went to the East Market first, and then the West Market. As time went by, people started to describe shopping as maidongxi.
Up or Down
Why shangcesuo but xiachufang? In ancient times, houses were laid out in a certain way. The gate was in the south. The bathroom was in the northeast, the kitchen in the southeast. On maps, north is up, south is down. So people said “go up” to the bathroom and “go down” to the kitchen. The words shang and xia also show social position. For example, people used huangshang to refer to (指代) the emperor and dianxia to refer to princes who had a lower position.
Left or Right
Most people today are right-handed. They feel uncomfortable if they try to use their left hand to write or use chopsticks. This was true in old times as well. So “left” was connected with being different, such as in yijianxiangzuo. If people don’t accept common beliefs (信念), we still say they are following ____19____.
In most cultures, the right hand is used for handshakes. In India and Nepal, the left hand is seen as unclean. However, if you are in a culture where the left hand is used, you’d better do as the locals do.
Next time you use these words, remember: directions in Chinese aren’t just about place—they’re about history, culture, and how people lived.
19. Which of the following Chinese expressions is an example in “Where to buy things”?
A. 东市买骏马,西市买鞍鞯 B. 东边日出西边雨
C. 青山横北郭,白水绕东城 D. 任尔东西南北风
20. Which picture shows the layout (布局) of houses in ancient China according to the passage?
A. B. C. D.
21. Which of the following can be best put in ________?
A. 欺上瞒下 B. 上蹿下跳 C. 旁门左道 D. 左思右想
22. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?
A. In ancient China, most of the people were left-handed.
B. In ancient Chinese, the word “right” meant being different.
C. In India, people should shake hands with their right hand.
D. When shaking hands, we should never use the left hand.
【答案】19. A 20. B 21. C 22. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,介绍中文里带方位词的表达背后的历史文化渊源。
【19题详解】
文章“East or West”部分提到“in the Tang Dynasty, there were two popular markets in Chang’an…One was called the East Market, and the other was called the West Market. When shopping, people usually went to the East Market first, and then went to the West Market.”,“东市买骏马,西市买鞍鞯”正是分别在东市和西市购买物品,符合“买东西”这一表达的来源。
【20题详解】
文章“Up or Down”部分说明“In ancient times, houses were laid out in a certain way. The gate was in the south. The bathroom was in the northeast, the kitchen in the southeast.”,因此正确的房屋布局应呈现门朝南、浴室位于东北、厨房位于东南,对应选项B的布局。
【21题详解】
文章“Left or Right”部分指出“‘left’ was connected with being different, such as in yijianxiangzuo.”,随后说“If people don’t accept common beliefs…”,此处应填入与“左”相关且表示偏离正统的成语。“旁门左道”意为非正统的途径,符合语境。
【22题详解】
根据第五段“In most cultures, the right hand is used for handshakes. In India and Nepal, the left hand is seen as unclean.”可知C选项正确:印度认为左手不干净,所以握手要用右手。A选项错误:原文说“Most people today are right-handed...This was true in old times as well.”,说明古代大多数人也是右撇子,不是左撇子;B选项错误:原文说“‘left’ was connected with being different”,是“左”和“不同”关联,不是“右”;D选项错误:原文说“if you are in a culture where the left hand is used, you’d better do as the locals do.”,不是“永远不能用左手”。
D
Plants are nature’s amazing food makers. Unlike animals, plants cannot move around to find food. Instead, they have developed special ways to get “food” from things around them. One of the main ways is through photosynthesis (光合作用).
For photosynthesis to happen, plants need three important things—sunlight, water and carbon dioxide (CO2). When these three things come together, something wonderful happens. There are two important products of photosynthesis. First, plants use sunlight to turn water and carbon dioxide into glucose (葡萄糖) which is a kind of sugar. Second, they produce oxygen (氧气) for animals and humans to breathe. This is why plants are so important—they clean the air by taking in carbon dioxide from the air and giving out oxygen.
Different plants have adapted to the environment in their special ways to live. Desert plants usually have thick bodies to keep water. They keep their stomata (气孔) closed during the hot day and only open them at night to do photosynthesis. This helps them live in dry conditions. Another example is water lilies (水百合). These plants grow in lakes. Their leaves spread across the water to collect sunlight. They have stomata only on the top side of their leaves to take in air. This special design helps them live well in water.
Thanks to photosynthesis, plants not only feed themselves but also support life on Earth!
23. What are the important things for photosynthesis to happen?
① water ② sunlight ③ oxygen ④ carbon dioxide
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ②③④ D. ①③④
24. What does the underlined phrase “adapted to” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Stuck to. B. Looked after. C. Got used to. D. Paid attention to.
25. What does “they” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Desert plants. B. Different plants. C. Water lilies. D. Special ways.
26. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Why Animals Need Plants B. The Secret Life of Desert Plants
C. Different Kinds of Plants in Nature D. How Plants Make Life Possible
【答案】23. B 24. C 25. A 26. D
【解析】

Nobody likes to feel nervous. But a scientist says we are wrong to think it is always bad. Feeling nervous is not an illness. It is a useful feeling from our ancestors. It helps us to think about the future and get ready for it. When you feel nervous before a big test, it makes you study harder. Your heart beats faster to send blood to your brain, so you can think more clearly.
____27____ For example, a parent might stop taking a child on a plane because the child is scared. But this doesn’t help the child learn to deal with the fear. A better way is to help the child face the problem little by little.
____28____ In one study, some people saw their nervousness as a helpful sign. These people did better when giving a speech. Their bodies were calmer, and they felt more confident. This shows that if we believe nervousness can help us, our body will follow.
____29____ When you are worried, your body makes a hormone (荷尔蒙) that makes you want to be with others. So, talking to a friend or family member can make you feel better. Holding a loved one’s hand can even calm your brain.
____30____ Having a goal, like joining a school team or learning a new skill, can turn your nervousness into energy. People who try to be excellent, not perfect, are happier and more creative. They use their nervousness to keep going, just like Thomas Edison did when he failed many times.
So, don’t try to get rid of (摆脱) nervousness. Learn to use it. It can help you do better and live a happier life.
A. Nervousness can also push you to be more creative.
B. Another way to use nervousness is to get support from others.

A Journey into Ningxia’s Paper-Cutting Art
Paper-cutting is one of the oldest folk arts in China. In Ningxia, the Hui people have practiced this art for hundreds of years. Their paper-cuts are known for their beautiful patterns of flowers, animals, and daily life scenes.
Ma Fanghua, a 62-year-old paper-cut artist from Yinchuan, has been practicing this craft since she was seven. “My grandmother taught me when I was a little girl. She said every cut tells a story,” Ma recalls. In 2018, her work “The Dancing Hui Girl” won first prize at a national folk art competition. Two years later, she was invited to give classes at Ningxia University, where more than 200 students learned the basics of paper-cutting.
But like many traditional arts, paper-cutting faces challenges today. “Young people find it hard to sit still for hours,” says Ma, “but the key is to start early. I teach my grandchildren, and they love it because we turn it into a game.”
To protect this cultural treasure, the local government has listed Hui paper-cutting as intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产). Schools have also started offering paper-cutting clubs, and some even make it part of their art classes. These efforts give Ma hope. “As long as there are people willing to learn, this art will never die,” she says.

C. Trying to run away from nervousness is not a good idea.
D. Finally, having a purpose in life can help you use nervousness well.
E. Learning about nervousness can also help you use it in a right way.
