Hayley Arceneaux managed to live after bone cancer (骨癌). So she isn’t afraid of a little space travel. This fall, she will be on SpaceX’s first private flight (飞行) to circle Earth. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital chose Arceneaux for the honor (荣誉). She was a patient before she got a job at St. Jude last spring. Arceneaux will join three other people on the flight. She will be the medical officer. At 29 years old, she will be the youngest American to go into space. Arceneaux will also be the first person in space with an artificial (人造的) body part. A fresh layer of snow arrived in parts of the Sierra this week, but it wasn’t nearly enough to get most ski resorts (度假胜地) ready for the winter season. Almost all have been forced to push back their opening dates, as warm temperatures and unpredictable storms make it harder to build the base they need. And increasingly, resorts are turning to experts whose full-time job is figuring out how to make winter, even when winter doesn’t show up. One of those experts is Brendan Ryan, a man who some jokingly call “Mr. Snow”.
Ryan is a leader at Alpine Solutions, a company that works with ski resorts across the country to map out the most effective snowmaking strategies. Ryan travels nationwide, advising resorts on how to produce snow despite unpredictable weather patterns.
At Sugar Bowl Resort, the staff say climate change is changing everything. “With climate change going on, snowmaking is becoming more and more important every year,” said John Slaughter, Sugar Bowl’s Director of Marketing.
Snowmaking depends on a balance of temperature, humidity (湿度), and wind direction and even natural snowfall doesn’t automatically mean machines can fire. “It’s not like turning on the guns and going,” Slaughter explained. “Just as an example, it can be snowing, and we still can’t make snow because it’s too humid.”
Every mountain faces its own challenges, from height to temperature patterns to water access, meaning there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. “Every resort is different,” Ryan said. “I live in Conway, New Hampshire, and it’s quite different operating out there than at the Sugar Bowl. At the end of the day, we’re all trying to create an amazing skiing experience using air and water to create snow.”
Even with this week’s fresh natural snow, experts agree the biggest challenge is what lies ahead: adapting to an ever-changing climate. Resorts are investing (投资) heavily in technology, advisory services, and long-term planning, all to keep the winter magic alive for years to come.
8. What problem are most ski resorts facing?
A. They suffer continuous storms. B. They are lacking expert support.
C. They can’t operate as scheduled. D. They don’t have large enough bases.
9. Why does Ryan travel across the country?
A. To seek snow experts’ opinions. B. To offer advice on snowmaking.
C. To draw a detailed snowfall map. D. To find suitable places for skiing.
10. What might Ryan and Slaughter agree on?
A. Typical examples should be learned.
B. Success at work requires the right tools.
C. Respect should be paid to the law of nature.
D. Solutions have to match local conditions.
11. What can we say about resorts from the last paragraph?
A. They take action to keep running.
B. They are operating at a low cost.
C. They lack a vision for the future.
D. They place hope on natural snow.
C 9. B 10. D 11. A

根据文章第一段“Almost all have been forced to push back their opening dates, as warm temperatures and unpredictable storms make it harder to build the base they need.(几乎所有项目都不得不推迟开工日期,因为温暖的气温和难以预测的风暴使得建造所需的雪基变得更加困难)”可知,大多数滑雪度假村由于天气原因不能如期施工。
根据文章第四段“Snowmaking depends on a balance of temperature, humidity (湿度), and wind direction and even natural snowfall doesn’t automatically mean machines can fire. “It’s not like turning on the guns and going,” Slaughter explained. “Just as an example, it can be snowing, and we still can’t make snow because it’s too humid.”(人工造雪取决于温度、湿度和风向的相互协调,而且即使有自然降雪,也不一定意味着机器就能启动作业。“这可不是开动喷雪机就能马上开始的事。”斯劳特解释道。“举个例子,可能外面正下着雪,但我们还是无法制造出雪来,因为天气太潮湿了。”)”及第五段“Every mountain faces its own challenges, from height to temperature patterns to water access, meaning there’s no one-size-fits-all solution.
根据文章最后一段“Resorts are investing (投资) heavily in technology, advisory services, and long-term planning, all to keep the winter magic alive for years to come.(度假村正在大力投入技术、咨询服务以及长期规划方面的工作,旨在让这份冬日的魔力得以延续多年)”可知,滑雪场正在大量投资技术、咨询服务,做长期规划,以此维持运营。
D
Plastic is widely used and long-lasting, finding its way into every corner of our lives. But the very qualities that make plastic so useful also make it a huge problem. Cheap and disposable (一次性的), plastic has been a symbol of our throwaway culture. As a result, vast quantities of plastic pollute our world. A truckload of plastic enters the ocean every single minute and UK supermarkets produce 800,000 tons every year. With production increasing, that’s set to rise.
But plastic isn’t just a problem for wildlife. The UK produces huge plastic waste per person, and a huge amount of it is sent to countries that aren’t equipped to deal with it. Greenpeace investigators found plastic waste being put and burned on the roadside, near waterways, and in the open air, and people nearby have reported serious health problems.
Bottles, pots, and food bowls are immediately obvious, but other types of plastic pollution can be harder to discern. When plastic breaks down, it doesn’t disappear. Instead, it gets smaller, creating microplastics. Even clothes made from man-made materials leave microplastic fibers when they’re washed.
Bits of plastic have been found in the oceans, on islands, and even in Antarctica. Turtles, dolphins, and seabirds can be injured by large pieces of plastic. It can even be mistaken for food. Microplastics are just as damaging. Eaten by everything from zooplankton (浮游动物) to giant blue whales, they enter the food chain and carry harmful substances. Moreover, microplastics have even been found in human waste.
We’re just beginning to realize the scale (程度) of the problem. People around the world have come together to end plastic pollution, and it’s working. Greenpeace supporters have challenged Coca-Cola to use less plastic packaging, while countries like the UK have banned certain microplastics. Supermarkets are starting to talk about what they need to do. Most of them are trying hard to share their responsibility for reducing plastic waste.
12. What can we learn about plastic from paragraph 1?
A. It mostly ends up in the oceans. B. It has a bad influence on our culture.
C. It will be produced less in the future. D. It has both beneficial and harmful effects.
13. What does the example of British plastic waste in paragraph 2 mainly show?
A. It is challenging to deal with plastic waste.
B. Plastic waste is a big problem for wildlife.
C. Dealing with plastic waste improperly threatens human health.
D. Most countries have rich experience in handling plastic waste.
14. What does the underlined word “discern” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Avoid. B. Follow. C. Notice. D. Control.
15. What are people doing to reduce plastic pollution?
A. Banning microplastics worldwide. B. Reducing the use of plastic products.
C. Making more reusable plastic products. D. Changing their behavior in supermarkets.
D 13. C 14. C 15. B

根据第一段“Plastic is widely used and long-lasting, finding its way into every corner of our lives. But the very qualities that make plastic so useful also make it a huge problem. Cheap and disposable (一次性的), plastic has been a symbol of our throwaway culture. As a result, vast quantities of plastic pollute our world. (塑料被广泛使用且经久耐用,已渗透到我们生活的方方面面。然而,正是这些使塑料如此有用的特性,也让它成为了一个巨大的问题。塑料价格低廉且为一次性用品,它已然成为了我们这种一次性消费文化的象征。结果,大量的塑料污染着我们的世界)”可推知,塑料既有有益的影响也有有害的影响。故选D。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Greenpeace investigators found plastic waste being put and burned on the roadside, near waterways, and in the open air, and people nearby have reported serious health problems. (绿色和平组织的调查人员发现,塑料垃圾被丢弃并焚烧在路边、水道附近以及露天场所,而且附近的居民报告称出现了严重的健康问题)”可推知,第二段中英国塑料垃圾的例子主要说明了处理塑料垃圾不当会威胁人类健康。故选C。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“Bottles, pots, and food bowls are immediately obvious, but other types of plastic pollution can be harder to discern. When plastic breaks down, it doesn’t disappear. Instead, it gets smaller, creating microplastics. (瓶子、罐子和饭碗之类的塑料垃圾一眼就能看出来,但其他类型的塑料污染可能更难discern。当塑料分解时,它并不会消失。相反,它会变得更小,形成微塑料)”可知,瓶子、罐子和食品碗等塑料垃圾是很明显的,但是其他类型的塑料污染可能更难被注意到,故画线词意思是“注意到”与“Notice”意思相近。A. Avoid.避免;B. Follow.跟随;C. Notice.注意到;D. Control.
根据最后一段“People around the world have come together to end plastic pollution, and it’s working. When she was 10, Arceneaux was given an artificial knee at St. Jude.
The SpaceX flight will circle Earth. It will last two to four days. Billionaire Jared Isaacman paid for the flight. He raised money for St. Jude, which researches childhood cancers. Isaacman asked St. Jude to pick one person. Without telling its workers, leaders at the center chose from a group of workers who were also former patients.
When Arceneaux was home in Tennessee, the call came out of the blue. Her answer was “Yes! Yes! Please!” But she also checked with her family members. Her brother and sister-in-law work in the space industry. They told her space travel is safe.
Arceneaux is a lifelong space fan. She is also a risk-taker.
“My fight against cancer really prepared me for space travel,” she said. “It made me strong.” She can’t wait to show kids with cancer that “the sky is not the limit (界限) anymore.” She thinks it will “mean so much to these kids to see a former cancer patient in space.”
Isaacman, 38, is also a risk-taker. He will lead the spaceflight.
He set out to raise $200 million for St. Jude. He said he would provide 50% of the money.
“It’s not all ... about getting people excited to travel in space someday,” Isaacman said. “It’s also ... about an encouraging message of what we can achieve here on Earth.”
