A group of female students can now add “lifesavers” to their resumes (简历). Five students from the University of Georgia (UGA) are being honored as heroines after they took action during an accident.
They were traveling from Athens to Savannah for a weekend activity. After turning along Murray Hill Road in Burke County, the group of sisters saw a dust cloud below the bridge with a flash of white light. “We pulled over very fast, turned, and went down this hill to the area, and we saw a white car underwater,” said McCollum, one of the five students. Then the young women jumped out of the car and rushed towards the passengers.
“Two of us quickly entered the water to get the victims (受害者) to safety, while two others gathered supplies and one communicated with emergency responders. We were trying to get the children out of the water,” said McCollum, Along with the mom, there were two children in the back of the car. While one student called 911, another started to put her lifeguarding skills to the test by performing CPR (心肺复苏) on one of the children. “We all looked at each other and suddenly burst into tears,” said Jones, another student.
The Burke County Sheriff’s Office said all survivors from the accident were sent to a hospital and that they left the hospital the next day. McCollum said that she was grateful that she and her friends were able to aid the family. “I think we are repeatedly placed in the right place at the right time to be of help to others,” she said. “There are people struggling all around us all the time. If we can help one another, the results can be as effective as those in providing help in huge events.”

In recent years, it has become common for parents to give children digital devices to control their emotional responses, especially negative ones. A team of researchers from Canada investigated if this strategy causes children to struggle with emotion regulation (调节) later in life.
Dr. Veronika Konok, the author of the study, said, “If parents often offer a digital device to calm a child, the child won’t learn to control emotions. It will lead to more serious problems.” Professor Caroline Fitzpatrick explained, “Parents often use tablets or smartphones to change children’s attention when they’re upset, because children are interested in digital content. It’s an easy and useful short-term way.”
However, the researchers expected this practice to have few benefits in the long term. To prove their theory, they did an assessment (评估) for two years. They discovered that when parents often used digital emotion regulation, children had poorer anger and frustration (挫折) management skills a year later. If parents gave children these devices more often during negative emotions, children also showed less effortful control at the follow-up assessment.
Konok pointed out, “Anger can’t be cured by digital devices. Children must learn to manage negative emotions themselves. They need their parents’ help, not a digital device. The researchers suggested not avoiding frustrating situations for the children. Instead, parents should guide children through difficult times, help them recognize emotions, and teach them how to deal with these problems.
To support parents, it’s important that they receive help. For example, health professionals could provide useful information. Fitzpatrick concluded, “Based on our results, new training and consultation (咨询) methods could be developed. If people are more aware that digital devices aren’t suitable for curing anger, children’s mental health and well-being will improve.”
28. How did the researchers prove their theory?
A. They referred to some historical materials.
B. They made a judgement based on their assessment.
C. They interviewed some teachers, parents and children online.
D. They did some experiments in a lab and drew some conclusions.
29. When do parents often offer their children digital devices according to Fitzpatrick?
A When their children feel tired or sleepy.
B. When their children feel unhappy and anxious.
C. When their children have made some achievements.
D. When their children expect to get some help with their studies.
30. What is Dr. Veronika Konok’s advice?
A. Recognizing emotions can’t do good to children.
B. Children should learn to deal with negative feelings.
C. Children should try to manage to avoid big troubles.
D. Anger can be treated well by digital devices to some degree.
31. Why did Fitzpatrick say the words in the last paragraph?
A. To express her guess. B. To express her worry.
C. To express her feeling. D. To express her suggestion.

China has introduced a new policy offering significant discounts on railway travel for senior passengers as part of its efforts to unlock the market potential (潜力) of its rapidly growing elderly population, China State Railway Group announced on Monday.
On April 1, the railway operator will expand its program to offer increased reward points for passengers aged 60 and older. While regular members earn points equal to five times the ticket price, senior members will now receive 15 times the fare amount in reward points. The accumulated (累计的) points can be redeemed (兑换) for train tickets, effectively providing significant discounts. For example, a senior member of the program who spends 1,000 yuan ($138) on train tickets will receive 15,000 points, which can be redeemed for tickets worth 150 yuan. In comparison, regular members will receive 5,000 points, equal to 50 yuan for ticket redemption.
The program is open to elderly passengers from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, as well as foreigners who have the right to live in China forever. The benefits do not extend to international or special tourist trains, but the policy is expected to encourage more elderly individuals to take rail trips within the country.
The new policy is part of China's strategy to develop its “silver economy”, recognizing the aging population as an economic opportunity rather than only a social challenge. China had more than 310 million people aged 60 and older at the end of last year, taking up about 22 percent of the total population.
Growing demand for senior-friendly tourism services inspired the government to introduce an action plan for “silver-haired train service” last month. The plan was jointly released by nine government departments, including the Ministry of Commerce and China State Railway Group.
Onboard services will be enhanced with trained staff, medical support and tailored activities, including chess, reading and music events, to create a more engaging travel experience.
On Saturday, a tourism train for seniors left Tianjin, picking up travelers from Beijing and Hebei province before heading south toward Jiangxi, Hunan and Guangdong provinces. A total of 452 passengers started a 12-day cross-region journey, visiting several popular tourist sites along the route.
32. How many reward points can a regular member earn if he has spent 1,200 yuan on train tickets?
A. 6,000. B. 8,000. C. 10,000. D. 11,000.
33. Why is the new plan introduced by China?
A To better Chinese seniors' physical conditions.
B. To attract more elderly foreigners.
C. To reduce so much travel pressure.
D. To develop its economy.
34. Which can replace the underlined word “enhanced” in paragraph 6?
A. Improved. B. Appreciated. C. Explained. D. Discussed.
35. What is the best title for the news report?
A. Chinese seniors prefer to travel by train
B. Railway offers discounts for senior riders
C. China has over 310 million people age 60 and older
D. Growing demand for senior-friendly tourism services

【答案】Green Life: Let’s Take Action!
Dear fellow students,
Our planet is facing serious environmental problems. To promote a sustainable life, the Student Union is launching a campaign called “Green Life: Let’s Take Action!”.
Here is what we can do to live a green life. Firstly, we should turn off lights, shut off taps and unplug devices immediately when they are not in use. Secondly, we can separate waste paper, plastic, and metal for proper recycling. Thirdly, choose eco-friendly transportation means such as walking, cycling, or taking buses. Fourthly, we should use reusable bottles, bags, and containers instead of single-use plastic ones. Last but not least, let’s plant more trees and recycle waste things appropriately.
Let’s make our school and community cleaner and greener together. Let’s take an active part in the campaign from now on because our earth needs our care!
