Do you have any history book recommendations?
by Cayitam » April 30th, 2025, 8:47 am
Hello there, I'm writing to see if anyone happens to have any suggestions for history books. Perhaps you've read some good ones recently. I'm really interested in finding a new history book to read, so I hope someone may have a recommendation. It would be great if you could let me know what you think is worth reading.

Hi, Cayitam! I'd recommend Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari. It's a fascinating introduction to human history, telling the story of humans from ancient days to today's modern world. The book talks about big turning points in human history. Harari also asks interesting questions, such as whether things like money or nations are just ''stories'' we all believe in together. It's an easy-to-read book that makes you think differently about history. Happy reading!

At first, I could hardly see anything. After moving down through dark, narrow caves, my eyes were not used to the light. But when I could focus again, I stood in surprise.
''It's a... sea!'' I cried.
''Yes. Axel,'' my uncle said, ''and I shall give it my name, as I discovered it!''
There was a great lake or even an ocean. The shore was covered with small shells where the first living beings lived. Around this sea stood a huge rock wall.
I could see far over this great sea because of a strange light. Not sunlight, of course, as we were deep below the surface. No; with its bright, clear whiteness, the light must have been electric (电的).
We kept quiet inside a cave that must have been several miles high.
Human words cannot describe the discoveries of those who have been deep into the earth. My imagination was powerless before such wonders. I felt surprised and quite scared at the same time. However, the soft salty air cheered me up. After many days in much narrower spaces, it was a great relief.
''Ready to walk a little now?'' asked my uncle.
''Yes, certainly.''
''Well, let us follow the shore then,'' he said, and we began to explore.
Soon in front of us appeared a forest with trees like umbrellas. ''Mushrooms!'' said my uncle. And he was right! There were mushrooms in their thousands, and each at least nine meters high. How excellent they were!
''Wonderful!'' cried my uncle. ''Now look under your feet.''
I hadn't noticed the many bones under our feet as we walked. Suddenly I thought, if once these monsters lived here, might some still walk through these dark forests? I looked around nervously, but we were the only living beings in this underworld. Thankfully!
Finally, we returned to the cave we had entered from, and I went to sleep with strange thoughts. Where did this underground sea end? Where would we go?

Are you a book-lover that feels you don't have enough time to read? Don't worry. You can find out the solutions (解决方法) right here.
Firstly, don't read before bed. Most people keep their reading on their nightstand (床头柜). If you read at night, you will probably only get through a few pages before you get sleepy. Instead, I suggest reading before work. Even if you're not an early bird, use the time you spend checking WeChat every morning to read some lines on the phone.
Secondly, make good use of the time when you're on the way to work. For example, if you take the bus or underground to work, you can use this time to read. A half-hour commute (通勤) can easily turn into five hours of reading time every week — enough for most people to read a whole book.
Thirdly, ▲ . Before you tell me how much you ''enjoy the smell of the printed books'', let me try to tell you the convenience (便利) of reading in the e-book app on your smart phone: you'll always have your ''books'' with you, and most importantly, you can always get through a little reading in those lost minutes of the day--waiting in line for coffee, during business breaks and so on. Those pages add up fast.
What's more, if a book makes you feel terrible, stop reading it. You don't need to waste time reading a book that is not good. In fact, it's more likely to make you quit your reading habit. Surely, you might think it's necessary to finish a book which you spent five painful hours on. However, you can simply put it down.

Dear Jake,
Summer vacation is coming soon. It is the best time for us to read books. I have read and kept many books from childhood. Among them, my favourite book is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. It is written by Mark Twain.
The book is about a smart boy, Tom Sawyer and his unusual childhood. He takes some unbelievable adventures with his friends. However, he doesn't fear in the face of difficulties.
I got this book on my 7th birthday and I have had it for seven years. It is special to me because it's my birthday gift from my dear father. What's more, I like it because I learnt a lot from Tom Sawyer. I will keep the book forever.
Yours,
Li Hua
