第一节(共15小题:每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
A
While ball games and chess dominate the spotlight, some unusual sports remain off the radar but they’re just as thrilling! These activities not only lift your spirits but also bring back the true essence of sports: FUN! Here are four fascinating examples:
Quidditch
Inspired by J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, this magical game is now a real international sport. Each team has seven players, and every player must keep a broom between their legs from start to finish. Combining elements of rugby and dodgeball, it’s called “Muggle Quidditch” since non-magical folks play it without magic.
Yubi Lakpi
This traditional Indian game resembles football, but with a twist — players use a coconut instead of a ball. Two teams compete to carry the coconut into the opponent’s goal area. To make the game more challenging, players apply oil to their bodies, making them slippery and hard to grab. Tough enough? Give it a try!
Zorbing
Imagine rolling downhill inside a giant plastic ball. That’s zorbing! It first originated in New Zealand in the 1990s and has grown into a popular outdoor adventure activity around the world. Usually done on gentle slopes or flat ground, it’s more about the joy of rolling than competition. Perfect for a fun day out with friends!
Toe Wrestling
Yes, it’s real and it even has a World Championship! Similar to arm wrestling, opponents try to pin each other’s toes down for three seconds. Matches alternate between left and right feet, with the best of three rounds deciding the winner. So kick off your shoes and socks. It’s toe-wrestling time!
21. What must Quidditch players do throughout the game?
A. Control the team with magic.
B. Pass a rugby ball to other folks.
C. Hold a broom between their legs.
D. Obey rules from the Harry Potter series.
22. How do players make it difficult for the opposing team in Yubi Lakpi?
A. By wetting the fields.
B. By oiling themselves.
C. By polishing the coconuts.
D. By blocking the opponents.
23. What do Zorbing and Toe Wrestling have in common?
A. Both take place on gentle slopes.
B. Both involve close-body contact.
C. Both qualify as championship events.
D. Both feature fun-oriented recreation.
B
I’ll be honest: I’m not a science guy. Physics, for me, was mostly a fog of equations I tried to survive in school. But while reading Life 3.0 by Max Tegmark, I stumbled upon Fermat’s Principle — and it felt less like physics and more like a life lesson in disguise.
Tegmark explains it with a brilliant analogy. Imagine a lifeguard on a beach spotting a swimmer in trouble. She doesn’t take the straight line. Why? Because she runs faster on sand than she swims in water. So she runs farther down the beach first — covering more ground where she’s fast — then dives into the water at an angle. That bent, two-part path is the fastest. Light does the same: bending as it enters water, following the path of least time, not least distance.
This is where it clicked. Tegmark writes that the universe often behaves as if it’s optimizing something — minimizing energy, maximizing efficiency. It felt purposeful. Even if nature has no “goal,” its behaviour is goal-oriented.
It made me look at my own life. How often do I chase the path that looks shortest, only to find it’s the most draining? I used to promise myself that I would read an hour daily, which seemed to be the “straight-line” way, But I burned out by day three. The “Fermat” way is different: start small, reduce friction, bend your path to match the environment where your progress flows faster. You might run farther on sand before diving in, but you’ll reach your destination sooner.
The same applies to change. Whenever we try to change something, we often force confrontation: quit cold turkey, overhaul overnight, fix everything at once. But real change, like light, works better when it bends — when it adapts to the medium it moves through. Bending differently at work, at home is not weakness but wisdom.
Maybe the key to improving our lives bit by bit isn’t about more force or straight-line speed. Maybe it’s about paying attention to the medium we’re moving through — our time, mood, health, energy — and adjusting our angle. Because, as nature shows us, the optimal path is rarely the straight one.
24. What did the author think of physics initially?
A. It required genuine curiosity. B. It posed academic challenges.
C. It provided intellectual rewards. D. It contained philosophical insights.
25. What does the lifeguard story in paragraph 2 mainly explain?
A. The necessity of training for lifeguards. B. The methods of calculating running speed.
C. The mechanism of light bending in water. D. The difference between jogging and swimming.
26. What sets the “Fermat” way apart from the author’s prior way?
A. Allowing minute changes. B. Highlighting direct methods.
C. Demanding strong willpower. D. Advocating dramatic progress.
27. Which of the following does the author most probably agree with?
A. Go with the flow. B. No pains, no gains.
C. Pride goes before a fall. D. Still water runs deep.

People’s noses get colder when they are feeling stressed, according to a new study. Researchers from the University of Sussex, in England, looked at the temperature of people’s faces to see if it changed when they were nervous or under pressure.
Professor Gillian Forrester, who studies brains and behaviour at the University of Sussex, led the study. She recorded 29 people with a thermal imaging camera to see what happened when they were stressed. First, the volunteers listened to white noise (quiet background sound that sounds a bit like a waterfall) for five minutes to make them calm. Then they had to perform two tasks in front of a silent group of strangers. They had to give an unintended presentation and they had to do maths in their head and say their answers out loud.
From the results of the study, it was found that people’s nose temperature drops by between 3°C and 6°C when they are under pressure. This is because the blood in their faces goes to their ears and eyes, which are important senses for detecting danger. The researchers were able to see the change in blood flow on the thermal imaging camera because places that were warmer had more blood. Once the stress was over, the blood in people’s faces returned to where it usually was within a few minutes.
Forrester said that the length of time it takes someone’s nose to recover its temperature could be a measure of how well they manage their stress. This would be useful to know. Forrester asked, “If they bounce back unusually slowly, could that be a risk marker of anxiety or depression?”
Humans are not the only ones who could benefit from this knowledge. Stress also changes the blood flow in the faces of animals that are closely related to humans, such as apes. Researchers hope that thermal cameras could help them to look after rescued animals in ape shelters.
“They can’t say how they’re feeling and they can be quite good at concealing how they’re feeling.” said Marianne Paisley, who studies ape well-being at the University of Sussex. The temperature of an ape’s face could help people understand how they are feeling and how to make them feel better too. For example, the team has found that showing adult apes a video of baby apes calmed them down. When the adult animals watched the video on a screen, their noses slowly warmed up.
28. In Forrester’s study, what did the volunteers do before taking part in potentially stressful tasks?
A. They reached a calm state by listening to white noise.
B. They solved some arithmetic problems mentally.
C. They gave an unprepared speech in front of strangers.
D. They learned how to use a thermal imaging camera.
29. What does Forrester think of nose temperature recovery time?
A. It may help people to manage their stress.
B. It may reflect stress management ability.
C. It may have nothing to do with anxiety level.
D. It may not be as useful as previously expected.
30. The underlined word “concealing” in Paragraph 6 is closest in meaning to “ ”.
A. strengthening B. expressing C. controlling D. masking
31. Which of the following best summarizes the passage?
A. Thermal cameras have been widely used to care for rescued apes in shelters.
B. A new study shows nose temperature can be used to detect stress levels.
C. Researchers have found effective ways to reduce stress in humans and apes.
D. Stress has a great influence on the blood temperature in human and ape faces.

Archaeologists working in the Nile Delta of Egypt may have discovered a structure traced back to around 2,600 years ago while testing a new technology designed to locate structures buried deep beneath the surface. The team was studying the Buto site, the ruins of an ancient city that was occupied from the Predynastic period to the Early Islamic era.
During its long history, Buto was built, destroyed, and rebuilt, and consequently has several layers, each potentially a rich source of archaeological remains. However, the oldest parts of the city are now buried beneath later ruins and thick mud deposits. This would make traditional digging difficult, time-consuming, and expensive, as archaeologists have to move large tons of debris or struggle with groundwater to reach lower levels.
The researchers were trialing an integrated approach that uses satellite radar and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT). The team started with Sentinel-1 radar satellites to identify large-scale anomalies (异常事物) from space. When it detected something of interest, they followed up with ERT, which sends electrical currents between a series of electrodes placed in the ground to create a three-dimensional model of subsurface structures based on how different materials conduct or resist electricity. This technique has been likened to an underground “CT scan”.
The scans showed that while the upper layers contained some remains from later historical periods, a large, well-defined structure lay at a depth of between three and six meters, dating back about 2,600 years. At this stage, the researchers thought it could be a large tomb or temple. Guided by these results, they carried out a small excavation (挖掘), which uncovered mudbrick walls and religious artifacts where the sensors had predicted.
The results of this study demonstrate the effectiveness of combining geophysical measurements and remote sensing data, which can accurately detect buried settlements in a complex region. The researchers now plan to expand these surveys with larger equipment to reach even deeper, older levels and they believe their integrated approach can be used to map other archaeological sites before anyone has to pick up a shovel.
32. What is the primary purpose of the technology used in the study?
A. To replace traditional excavation with advanced imaging tools.
B. To uncover ancient artifacts without disturbing the site.
C. To examine the historical layers of the Buto site in detail.
D. To assist archaeologists in identifying where to excavate.
33. Why is traditional excavation at Buto considered challenging?
A. The equipment required is not available for large-scale digging.
B. The site contains remains from multiple historical periods.
C. The deeper layers are hidden beneath later deposits and groundwater.
D. The mudbrick structures are too fragile to survive excavation.
34. What is the role of electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) in the research?
A. It detects large-scale anomalies from satellite images.
B. It generates a 3D image of underground structures.
C. It determines whether a site contains valuable artifacts.
D. It removes obstacles that block access to deeper layers.
35. What can be inferred about the integrated approach used by the researchers?
A. It is mainly useful for studying surface-level remains.
B. It will ultimately replace traditional excavation.
C. It combines satellite radar with ground-based methods.
D. It allows for more efficient archaeological exploration.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
In everyday communication, we exchange not only logical information but also emotions, attitudes and inner states. Since human beings are emotional creatures, our decisions, whether significant or trivial, are often driven more by emotions than by pure reason. Therefore, to express strong emotions clearly, we tend to use words like very, so and truly in daily language. 36
Verbal intensifiers (强化词) are special function words that enhance the meaning, especially the emotional meaning of the words they are attached to. 37 According to Buzarov (1998), intensification is a stable and vital feature of informal language. Words such as awfully, deeply, tremendously, and truly help speakers strengthen emotional impact and influence listeners’ psychological perception.
38 In English, we often say “I am deeply grateful” or “He is dead tired.” Other languages also have similar words: очень in Russian, sehr in German, très in French. Some new intensifiers are even created by combining words, like fantabulous from fantastic and fabulous.
To make the most of intensifiers, we should use them with a clear purpose. Do not use them mindlessly. 39 Connect them with your genuine attitude and focus on conveying precise emotions. This way, appropriate use of intensifiers will make our words more powerful and sincere.
Intensifiers, like any other linguistic tool, work best in the right context. 40 However, overusing them without necessity will only weaken their expressive effect and make our words sound empty. Mastering them wisely helps us become more proficient and persuasive communicators.
A. Proper use is a smart linguistic choice.
B. These function words have great expressive value.
C. You’d better use them to express real ideas and emotions.
D. Using intensifiers at will influences emotional expression.
E. Intensifiers are used to simplify the meaning of other words.
F. This is why verbal intensifiers have emerged in languages worldwide.
G. They are commonly employed across languages and take on diverse forms.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Sumi was a single mother. Her daughter Anna has always been called “Number 23.” Every time the school released exam results, Anna would always end up in 23rd position among 50 pupils. Always 23, no matter how hard she pushed Anna. Every mention of this nickname bothered Sumi.
One day, Sumi, along with Anna, was invited to a lively gathering of several friends and their families. The atmosphere was delightful and as the lunch came to a finish, a man playfully asked the youngsters what they aspired (有志成为) to be when they grew up. “I want to be a pianist!” “I want to be a famous actor!” “I want to be a politician!” “I’ll start a business and make tons of money!” One after another, the children voiced these bold, ambitious dreams, earning warm applause and compliments from the adults.
Anna, however, simply smiled and clapped along, remaining silent. She was quietly occupied with serving soup and distributing cookies to the guests. Then, the man who had posed the question turned his gaze toward Anna and added, “Hey, our Anna hasn’t shared her dream yet. What do you want to be when you grow up?” Anna paused, and then, with a soft smile, replied, “Uncle, I want to be a primary school teacher. I love kids — telling them funny stories and teaching them how to make paper cuts. I just love dancing and singing and playing with them.” The room fell instantly silent. Sumi felt her heart sink.
Later, boarding a rented bus for the return trip, Sumi stared out the window, a heavy cloud of disappointment settling over her. She had hoped Anna would dream bigger, not settle for such an ordinary life. As traffic thickened, the bus got fast stuck in a jam. Suddenly, two boys erupted into a full-blown quarrel over a single slice of dessert. No one could calm them down. To make matters worse, more kids on the bus began to get restless due to the jam.

Digital Minimalism: Less screen, Better Focus
Nowadays, a growing number of senior three students are embracing digital minimalism. They set aside regular "screen-free hours" to stay away from phone distractions, and avoid online search for answers. I fully approve of this practice.
Firstly, cutting down screen time frees us from endless notifications and social media distractions, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in study and significantly boost our learning efficiency. Secondly, saying no to quick online answers pushes us to analyze problems and work out solutions independently, which strengthens our problem-solving abilities and deepens our understanding of knowledge.
In short, digital minimalism is not only a smart choice for senior three students to improve their academic performance, but also a valuable habit that lays a solid foundation for their future growth and lifelong learning.

Possible version:
At that critical moment Anna stepped in. Approaching the quarreling boys with a calming smile, she knelt down and took out a paper cut she had made earlier, a small rabbit with floppy ears, which immediately caught the boys’ attention. Simple as that, the argument ended. Everyone was stunned. Then, she began distributing treats like a caring big sister, instantly comforting the restless children. Making use of leftover candy boxes, she folded intricate paper animals — elephants, lions, and birds — and presented them to each child on the bus. The children’s eyes sparkled with joy as they admired their unique gifts, their cries replaced by laughter. The man who had asked about their dreams earlier watched in astonishment, clapping appreciatively. As for Sumi, a new emotion warmed her chest: pride.
Sumi excitedly called Anna a hero, but she shook her head gently. Face flushing red, she uttered, “Mom, I’m not a hero. I just did what I like,” her eyes shining with sincerity.” That simple answer shifted something deep within Sumi. She realized she had always pushed Anna to achieve, shine, and be number one, yet she had missed the point. Being kind, happy, and true to oneself was the real achievement. Perhaps being “Number 23” wasn’t terrible after all; it was exactly where Anna was meant to shine. A tear of joy rolled down Sumi’s cheek as she wrapped her arm around her daughter's shoulder. For the first time, she understood that being a primary school teacher was not settling, but a noble pursuit worthy of all respect.
