In 1912,Noel-Baker was on the way to a graduate degree in International Law at Cambridge.
That July, the 22-year-old took some time off from his studies to join the British track and field
team for the fifth modern Olympic Games in Stockholm.
At this Olympics, the American multi-sport star Jim Thorpe easily won the extremely tough
pentathlon and decathlon(五项和十项全能).That year saw the first appearances of horse riding,
women's water sports, automatic timing devices for the track events, the photo finish and a public
address system. For the first time, competitors in the Games came from all five continents.
押题登科卷(二)·英语I卷第3页(共8页)
British athletes won 41 medals that year.Noel-Baker was not among them, running the 800 m
and 1500 m races and taking sixth in the latter. He did better at the 1920 Antwerp Olympiad, after
the 1916 Games were cancelled by WWI.The 30-year-old then won 1500 m silver,his only
Olympic medal.
Noel-Baker's father,a successful London businessman and committed peace advocate, lived
out his belief in public service.Noel-Baker took after his father all the time, and was saddened
when the war broke out soon after the joyful display of internationalism he witnessed in Stockholm.
He served in the war by organizing frontline ambulance services, experiencing the war's worst
horrors. He returned with a stronger drive for peace.Post-war,he assisted Lord Robert Cecil,a
League of Nations architect. After WWII,he joined the effort to form what would become the
United Nations,working nonstop for peace.
While some fellow politicians backed practical political strategies,or even stuck to the view
that powerful weapons would best prevent violence,Professor Michael E.Cox said,"Noel-Baker
held a pure commitment to peace, believing all along that only cutting back on weapons could truly
end war,and refusing to give an inch to practical politics. The Nobel Committee awarded Noel-
Baker the Peace Prize in 1959,soon after his book The Arms Race:A Programme for World
Disarmament came out, which offered a detailed plan for getting rid of both nuclear and
conventional weapons.

B.His long-term public service.
C.His own war experiences.
D.His father's personal example.
26.What does Cox think of Noel-Baker's concept of peace?
A.Philosophical.B.Idealistic.
C.Realistic.
D.Modern.
27.What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A.To promote an academic book.
B.To record Olympic history.

People who start to exercise more hope to burn extra calories, but they lose far less weight
than would be expected based on the extra calories burned.
Now,an analysis of 14 trials in people has revealed that our bodies compensate()by
burning less energy elsewhere. This compensation effect is greater if people eat less as well as
exercising more-and can completely cancel out the extra energy spent exercising. In other words,
while eating less will result in weight loss, exercising while dieting may bring no additional loss.
"The real killer here is that if you pair exercise with diet, your body goes,'fine,I'm going to
compensate more',"says Herman Pontzer at Duke University.
When Pontzer studied Hadza hunter-gatherers in Tanzania,he was amazed to find their active
lives meant no more overall energy use than desk workers. This discovery led Pontzer to propose
years ago that our bodies have developed a tendency to limit energy burn, compensating for more
physical activity by saving energy elsewhere. Some studies back the idea, but not everyone in the
field is convinced.
Now,Pontzer and Eric Trexler, also at Duke University, have identified studies done for other
reasons whose findings can be analysed for compensation evidence."These studies shouldn't be one-
sided on whether compensation occurs,"says Pontzer. They had no dog in the fight when the data
were collected.In particular,the pair looked at 14 trials.On average,they found people's total
energy expenditure (rose by just a third of what would be expected based on increased
exercise.
押题登科卷(二)·英语I卷第4页(共8页)
Compensation occurred only with aerobic exercises like running. With weightlifting or
resistance training, energy use rose more than expected. For instance, those expending an extra
200 kilocalories lifting weights saw a 250 kilocalories daily rise in total energy use.Yet the
weightlifters in these studies gained muscle and barely lost fat.Why does aerobic exercise not boost
total energy use as expected?Analysis suggests the body compensates by cutting energy use for
basic background tasks.
28.Which statement does Pontzer agree with?
A.Exercise reduces energy use elsewhere.
B.Exercise and diet help with weight loss.
C.Extra weight loss does no good to health.
D.Inappropriate exercise causes weight gain.
29.Why is Hadza hunter-gatherers mentioned?
A.To emphasize field research.
B.To prove Pontzer's point.
C.To show their active lifestyle.
D.To question a common belief.
30.What does the underlined part in paragraph 4 mean?
A.The assumption avoided conflicts.
B.The data were difficult to collect.
C.The studies were without prejudice.
D.The research had no clear result.
31.What do we know about compensation effect from the last paragraph?
A.Energy use for basic tasks rises.
B.The effect escapes notice.
C.Weight training reduces fat better.
D.The type of exercise matters.

Asian termites()have troubled southern states like Florida for decades. They are almost
entirely restricted to hot and wet climates, but the insects have consistently arrived in newly
habitable regions due to warming temperatures caused by climate change.Since their accidental
introduction into the United States around the mid-20th century, they have spread to at least 11
states.Today, termites in the U.S.annually cause an estimated $1-7 billion in structural
damage.
The insects spend the majority of their lives hidden inside their nests, and only emerge to mate
and move to new places during their active time in spring and early summer. This means it requires
a concerted effort to keep an eye on their spread across communities.Often, they're only confirmed
after significant damage to homes and other buildings."Early detection of their activity is
challenging,"Thomas Chouvenc,a biologist at the University of Florida(UF),explained."Not
only are they hard to detect without regular professional inspections, but they're also rarely
reported.”
Chouvenc and his team recently analyzed all available data collected between 1990 and 2025 by
the UF Termite Collection to better understand their continued spread. He said the termite species'
spread was underestimated for decades, making it unclear which communities are being damaged or
will be damaged by them.In fact, termites are doing even better than the biologists feared. The
biologists can confirm that the termites are no longer only living in a few locations in Florida.By
now, they're well established throughout most of the state's coast and most of its largest urban
centers.Trends also indicate that they'll be found everywhere in Florida by 2050.
If there's any silver lining,it's that some past projections remain accurate. For example,a
2016 analysis estimated half of all structures in the South Florida area will be at risk from at least
one or both species by 2040.This still seems to be the case, which at least makes it easier for urban
planners to anticipate.
32.What is the main reason for Asian termites spreading?
A.The increasing temperature.
B.Their human unintentional import.
C.Their seasonal active movement.
D.The damaged but livable structures.
押题登科卷(二)·英语I卷第5页(共8页)
33.What do Chouvenc's words indicate in paragraph 2?
A.Tracking termites is a difficult job.
B.Stopping termite spread is impossible.
C.Reporting termites can be done easily.
D.Using expert termite detection is pointless.
34.What is the author's attitude to the rapid control of the termites in Florida?
A.Doubtful.B.Pessimistic.
C.Unclear.
D.Approving.
35.What is the suitable title for the text?
A.Termites:A Destructive Insect
B.Termites:A Climate Change Factor
C.Termites:An Expanding Challenge
D.Termites:A Growing Global Threat

Clifford Anderson is out of work.Is the 38-year-old electrical engineer depressed by this turn?
36 His former employer,Zycad Corp, dismissed him simply because the company had to cut
staff in his department.Anderson sees the unexpected shift in his career as an opportunity to learn
new skills. So,he's returned to Santa Clara University.37 When he leaves school,he hopes
there will be no shortage of companies eager to hire him as a consultant.
For a man of Anderson's father generation, being asked to leave a company would have been a
terrible shame,no matter what the reasons.38 They hold no hope for long-term employment
in the same company either. Our fathers lived their lives on the assumption that you finished
school, went into full-time work and lived and worked in the same sector of society until you
retired. That idea is practically dead.Students are well aware that career paths are no longer as
clearly defined as they once were.Workers need to notice shifts happening around them to stay
employed in the future.39
Many of the conditions that made the"one life, one career"approach possible are disappearing.
Technology develops so fast that shelf life of work skills now rarely lasts longer than 10 years.
40 Some are falling together.Others are replacing full-time employees with part-time and
temporary staff at all levels. The result is the same in any case.Tens of thousands of workers are
forced to think up new ways of earning a living.
A.Well,it depends.
B.Actually,not at all.
C.They should also be ready to gain new abilities.
D.He's earning a second degree in computer engineering there.
E.Some workers will be able to survive in the future job market.

G.But fewer of today's workers plan to devote their whole career to the same field.

Reik and Luka, two teenagers who loved outdoor adventures, had long dreamed of hiking in
the Cascade Mountains.
They spent days preparing for this two-day trip, packing dry clothes, energy bars,a compass,
and a small first-aid kit.Before leaving,they double-checked their equipment,then set off excitedly
early in the morning, bright with golden sunlight.Full of energy and hope, they were confident
their outdoor experience would help them handle any challenge that might come their way.
On the first afternoon, when they were halfway up the mountain, dark clouds suddenly
gathered overhead, and a fierce rainstorm hit without warning.Thunder crashed loudly as the rain
poured down like a waterfall, wetting their clothes in seconds and making the stone path extremely
slippery and dangerous.Strong winds blew heavily through the trees, shaking branches violently as
if they might break at any moment.Reik and Luka tried hard to follow the path markers, but the
heavy rain blurred()their vision, and soon they realized they had lost their way, trapped on a
narrow,steep side of the mountain.
The temperature dropped rapidly, and Reik started shaking with the cold, panic sweeping over
him-he cried loudly, holding his backpack tightly and insisting that they should give up,while
Luka tried his best to stay calm, holding a tree trunk to keep his balance and telling him that panic
would only waste energy and make things worse.
The conflict between them grew-Reik blamed Luka for leading them into danger, and Luka
felt upset that Reik couldn't stay strong. As the rain got heavier, their clothes were completely
wet.Luka knew they had to find shelter quickly,so he put aside his anger and comforted Reik
softly, telling him that they could get out of trouble together.Reik slowly calmed down, realizing
that arguing wouldn't help, and decided to trust Luka.
