Living Water: Poetry, Art and the Fight for Clean Rivers
“Without living water, we die.” These powerful words from Anglo-Irish artist Barrie Cooke reflect his alarm at the growing pollution of the Irish rivers and lakes he loved. A leading expressionist painter, Cooke drew inspiration from the natural world and from his friendships with major 20th-century poets, including Seamus Heaney, Ted Hughes and John Montague.
This exhibition (展览) uncovers a collection of letters, manuscripts (手稿) and artworks that offers fresh insights into the creative exchanges between these poets and artists across over 50 years. At its heart lies the shared landscape that inspired them — the rivers that became both artistic touchstones and warnings of environmental decline.
Living Water also brings together art and poetry to explore the worsening pollution that reshaped the waterways of Britain, Ireland and beyond. In the North and South Galleries, visitors can see works by the celebrated artist Susan Derges. Inspired by the rivers and landscape of Devon, Derges tracks the presence and flow of water. Her human-sized images capture the flow of water, light, and nature, inviting visitors to reflect on their connection to the environment while reading a poem.
The exhibition will also include events discussing the challenges of water health and environmental protection. These events are free and open to all. Please sign up for our What’s On mailing list for more information. Event bookings will open next month.

Jesse Blasi farms wheat (小麦) in Pratt, Kansas. He has worked the land for more than 20 years. Jesse and his wife, Sarah, met while they were students at Kansas State University. They have two daughters, Reagan, who is 14 and Avery, who is 12.
As their 20th wedding anniversary (结婚纪念日) got closer, Jesse wanted to do something special. He remembered how another farmer in his area, Lee Wilson, had planted sunflowers for his wife two years before. “I wanted to do something similar,” Jesse said.
Jesse started planning back in October. He used his John Deere air seeder (播种机) and special farming methods to plant two different types of wheat — white and red. Jesse used more than 65 million red wheat seeds to spell out his message.
Keeping this secret was hard work. Other farmers in the area kept calling Jesse to ask about what he was doing in his field. But Jesse kept quiet about his surprise.
When the wheat grew tall enough to show the message, Jesse took Sarah up in a small airplane. From the sky, Sarah could see “Jesse + Sarah 20 Years” written across their field. The message covered half a mile wide and stretched one mile long. Sarah was almost crying when she saw what her husband had done. “That’s Jesse Blasi’s love. That’s a farmer’s love right there,” Sarah said.
The wheat message will stay in the field until harvest (丰收) time this fall. Jesse says it looks best when you see it from 4,000 to 6,000 feet up in the air.
Like this Kansas farmer, we all have unique skills. Maybe we can knit, craft, paint, or sing. When we use them with our whole heart for our loved ones, it speaks louder than any store-bought present ever could.
4. What inspired Jesse’s anniversary plan?
A. Sarah’s love for sunflowers. B. Reagan and Avery’s suggestion.
C. A chat with Lee Wilson’s daughter. D. What Lee Wilson did for his wife.
5. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. How Jesse kept his secret. B. Jesse’s struggles as a farmer.
C. Jesse’s top-level farming skills. D. How Jesse prepared the surprise.
6. How did Sarah feel after seeing the message?
A. Moved. B. Awkward. C. Confused. D. Regretful.
7. What does the author mainly want to tell us?
A. Many hands make light work. B. Great gifts come from the heart.
C. Unique skills take time to learn. D. Actions speak louder than words.

Kayla Chege, a 15-year-old high school student, is using artificial intelligence (AI) for advice on makeup, back-to-school shopping, and even for ideas about her upcoming sweet 16. These are questions that are usually reserved for friends.
Teenagers are increasingly interacting with AI as if it were a companion, capable of providing advice and friendship, according to a new study from Common Sense Media, a group that studies and suggests using screens and digital media properly. In fact, more than 70 percent of teenagers are using AI companions — platforms (平台) that are designed to serve as digital friends.
According to the researchers, these AI platforms like Character. AI or Replika can be customized with specific personalities and can offer emotional (情感上的) support, companionship and conversations that can feel human- like. In fact, the survey found that 31 percent of teens said that their conversations with the AI companions were “as satisfying or more satisfying” than speaking with friends.
“AI is always there for you. It never gets bored with you. It’s never judgmental,” said 18-year-old Ganesh Nair. “When you’re talking to AI, you are always right. You’re always interested.”
While this sounds wonderful, it can actually increase loneliness and social anxiety. Overuse of AI for emotional support can also make conditions like anxiety and depression worse.
“Adolescence(青春期) is a time for teenagers to develop social skills and independence. If teens are developing social skills on AI platforms where they are always being supported, not being challenged, or not learning to understand somebody else’s opinions, they are not going to be fully prepared in the real world,” said Michael Robb, the study’s lead author.
The middle ground is for AI companions to improve but not replace real- life relationships and interactions. That’s why encouraging teenagers to join social clubs is important. Limiting these platforms, particularly for teenagers, is the best way to help adolescents grow into mentally healthy adults.
8. How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A. By making comparisons. B. By referring to comments.
C. By raising some questions. D. By describing a teenager’s life.
9. What is Ganesh Nair’s attitude towards AI?
A. Supportive. B. Uncaring. C. Unclear. D. Doubtful.
10. What is necessary for teenagers in Michael Robb’s opinion?
A. High grades. B. Screen- free home settings.
C. Real- life social skills. D. Various digital platforms.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. AI Platforms Make Teenagers Lonelier B. Teenagers Need More Emotional Support
C. Adolescence Is a Hard Time for Teenagers D. Teenagers Are Turning to AI for Friendship
D
Researchers of a new study wanted to predict (预测) how the changing behavior of hurricanes and sea level rise as a result of climate change will alter the risks of flooding in the northeastern U.S. Their results were worrying. “Extreme flooding events that used to be seen once every 100 years may happen annually by the end of this century,” said study lead author Amirhosein Begmohammadi.
To predict the risk of flooding under different carbon emission scenarios (碳排放情景), Begmohammadi and his co-workers developed a computer model to create different levels of storms and included predictions for sea level rise.
The model predicts that both sea level rise and changing storms could make extreme flood events more frequent (频繁的). Historical 100-year coastal flooding could happen every year, while historical 500-year floods may come every 1 to 60 years under a mid-level carbon emissions scenario and every 1 to 20 years under higher emissions. In more northern areas like Connecticut and New York, sea level rise may be the main driver of the increased flood risk, while storm changes are less important. Further south, in areas like New Jersey and Virginia, both factors may contribute a lot to higher flood risks.
“The new study focused on the strength and frequency of hurricanes. For the more northern part of the coast, the influence of sea level rise means it almost won’t matter if storms become more powerful because even smaller storms will be able to cause flooding,” said Jeff Ollerhead, a coastal geomorphologist. “So even if the frequency and power of storms remain nearly the same, the effect of each storm will increase as sea levels continue to rise.”
To prepare for this, people living near the coast will have to adapt to more frequent flooding. “The best solution is to move up and back to higher ground further from the coast. But not every community will be willing or able to do so, and it will be important to update building requirements to take into account the changing conditions,” said Ollerhead.
12. What does the underlined word “alter” probably mean in the first paragraph?
A. Change. B. Show. C. Stop. D. Reduce.
13. What does the computer model predict about the more northern part of the coast?
A. Only big storms will cause damage. B. The power of storms will become smaller.
C. Sea level rise may play a key role in flood risks. D. Carbon emissions will increase much more rapidly.
14. Which is Ollerhead’s advice for people living near the coast?
A. Get close to nature. B. Cut carbon emissions.
C. Choose to relocate. D. Update reports on floods.
15. Which part of a website does the text belong to?
A. Space. B. Planet& Earth. C. Physics& Math. D. Health.

Last Saturday afternoon, the sun was shining brightly as Leo and his three best friends, Sam, Mia and Joe, headed to their usual spot in Riverside Park for a football match. The grass field by the old tree was their kingdom. Laughter filled the air as they ran and passed the ball. Leo was chasing a long pass from Sam, his eyes fixed on the ball, when his foot suddenly caught on something hard. He tripped and fell face-first onto the grass.
“Ouch!” Leo cried. He looked back to see what had tripped him — a half-buried, torn plastic bottle. Angry, he was about to throw it away but stopped and looked around carefully. For the first time, he saw it: the field was littered with plastic bags, food wrappers, and thrown-away bottles here and there. The cheerful atmosphere of the game disappeared right away.
His friends hurried over. “Are you OK, Leo?” Sam asked, reaching out a hand. Leo stood up, brushing dirt and grass from his body. “I’m OK,” he said, his voice no longer cheerful. “But look at the field. Rubbish is everywhere. We play here all the time. How did we not notice?” The others looked around and got concerned. Then Leo had an idea.

D. Health.

Set specific (具体的) fitness goals. Many people start with unclear fitness goals like “Lose weight. Be healthier.” ____16____, but they don’t help much with planning or getting started. If you already have a regular gym habit, these goals might be easy enough to keep up. But if you need to get serious about making yourself get off the sofa and exercise at home, I don’t think they work. ____17____. For example, you could set a goal to lift a certain weight with your arms by your next birthday, or lose a certain number of pounds by an upcoming event. The key is to make goals that are personal, actionable, measurable, and time-bound.
Meet your own deadlines. You’ll find that it keeps you focused. For instance, if you set a goal to do a one-legged squat (深蹲) by May and actually achieve it in April, this will make you feel proud and eager to set the next goal, ____18____, try a rewards system. If your goal is to lift 30 pounds with your arms by December and you’re currently at 15 pounds, think of rewards for reaching 20 and 25 pounds. Maybe treat yourself to a meal at a favorite restaurant.

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章就如何保持在家里锻炼的动力提供了一些建议,其中包括制定具体健身目标、运用奖励机制并追踪进展等方法。
【16题详解】
根据前文“Many people start with unclear fitness goals like “Lose weight. Be healthier.”(很多人一开始会设定模糊的健身目标,比如“减重、更健康”)”,以及后文“but they don’t help much with planning or getting started.(但这些目标对规划或启动锻炼没什么帮助)”可知,此空需先肯定这些目标的初衷,再通过“but”转折指出其不足。A选项“These are great ideas (这些想法很好)”承上启下,先肯定这些想法本身不错,再通过后文转折说明其局限性,符合逻辑衔接。故选A项。
【17题详解】
根据前文“But if you need to get serious about making yourself get off the sofa and exercise at home, I don’t think they work.(但如果你真的想让自己离开沙发、在家锻炼,这些模糊目标是没用的)”,以及后文“For example, you could set a goal to lift a certain weight with your arms by your next birthday, or lose a certain number of pounds by an upcoming event.(比如,你可以设定一个目标:到下次生日时能用手臂举起一定重量的物体,或在即将到来的某个活动前减重若干磅)”可知,此空需引出“设定具体目标”的必要性。

根据后文“Cristina Chan, a F45 Global Recovery Athlete, says that tracking your workouts in a way that’s easy to see can make a huge difference when exercising alone. She suggests marking a calendar, using a habit tracker app, or even putting sticky notes on a wall to record your active days.(克里斯蒂娜·陈表示,以清晰可见的方式追踪锻炼进度,对独自锻炼的人来说作用很大。她建议标记日历、使用习惯追踪APP,甚至在墙上贴便利贴记录运动日)”可知,本段围绕“追踪目标进展”展开。D选项“Keep track of how you’re doing toward your goals(记录你朝着目标的进展情况)”为祈使句,点明“记录目标进展”的段落主旨,适合作小标题。故选D项。
【20题详解】
根据前文“Seeing how regularly you keep doing it over time is a powerful motivator,(长期看到自己规律锻炼的记录,是一种强大的动力)”可知,此空需进一步说明“记录进度”的具体作用。G选项“It enables you to focus on showing up instead of physical results(它能让你专注于坚持参与,而非身体上的结果)”补充说明动力产生的具体原因,符合语境。故选G项。

Dear Jim,
I’m glad to hear that you’re planning to introduce traditional Chinese culture through a video! I would recommend the Mid-Autumn Festival, which is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. This festival is a time when people gather with their loved ones to admire the full moon, eat mooncakes and enjoy other delicious food together.

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“What if we played a different match before continuing the football match?” Leo suggested.

【答案】例文
“What if we played a different match before continuing the football match?” Leo suggested softly. “We can’t continue playing football on a field like this. Let’s clean our kingdom up first!” He pointed at the rubbish. “Let’s make it a quick challenge. Fifteen minutes. We each take a section. Whoever collects the most pieces wins!” The others agreed gladly, and they got to work. For the next while, they were not football players, but cleaners, racing to pick up bottles, papers, and wrappers.
Soon, the park looked completely different. The green grass sparkled under the sun, free of litter. As they finally went on with their football match, kicking the ball across the clean field, something changed in the way they moved. Every step felt light and free. They could run as fast as they wanted, with no rubbish to trip them up. Their laughter returned, louder and brighter, echoing in a space they had made better with their own hands. That day, everyone was a winner of a new kingdom built not by one person but by a team.
