Language is always changing and developing. This isn’t a bad thing. If English hadn’t changed for a long time, we wouldn’t have words to describe telephones, washing machines, computers or some other new things.
Language changes for several reasons. First, it changes because the needs of its speaker change. New technologies, new products, and new experiences need new words to express them clearly. Another reason for change is that different people have different language experiences. People use different sets of words and expressions, because they have different ages, jobs, education levels and so on.
How does language develop then? On the one hand, many of the language changes begin with young people. When young people communicate with others of their own age, their language grows in grammar, words and expressions that are different from the older people’s. Some have a short lifetime but others can influence the language for a long time. On the other hand, we get new words in many different ways. We borrow them from other languages, we create them by making words shorter or combining words and we make them out of proper names.
Languages that don’t change over time are considered dead languages. The fact that English changes so much shows that it’s alive and well.
1. What does the writer think of the change and development of language?

The Development of High-Speed Rail in China
China has made remarkable achievements in the development of high-speed rail over the past few decades. The high-speed rail network in China has been expanding rapidly, becoming one of the largest and most advanced in the world.

Areas along the high-speed rail lines have witnessed increased investment, tourism, and business activities. Some small cities have even developed rapidly due to the arrival of high-speed rail, becoming new economic growth points.

Many countries around the world have shown great interest in China’s high-speed rail technology and have cooperated with China in building high-speed rail projects. Leo felt more and more worried about his English class. Every time he tried to speak, the words just wouldn’t come out. In the last listening test, he couldn’t understand the fast conversations at all. He knew he needed help. Finally, he decided to talk to his English teacher, Mr. Green, after class.
“Mr. Green,” Leo said, his voice quiet. “I think I’m bad at English. I can’t speak well, and the listening is too fast for me. I don’t know what to do.” Mr. Green smiled kindly. “Leo, thank you for telling me this. First, let me tell you something: feeling that something is difficult doesn’t mean you are bad at it. It just means you need a different way to practice.” Mr. Green asked Leo about his study habits. Leo said he usually just did his homework and sometimes remembered new words. “Well, that’s a good start,” Mr. Green said. “But language is for using, not just remembering. It’s like learning to swim. You can’t learn it only from a book; you must get into the water.”
Mr. Green gave Leo two pieces of advice. “First, for listening, don’t start with things that are too hard. Find some simple, slow English stories or songs online. Listen to them for 15 minutes every day. Don’t worry if you don’t understand every word at first. Just try to catch the main idea.” “Second, for speaking, practice talking to yourself! Describe what you are doing in English. For example, say I am opening the door or I am eating an apple. It might feel funny, but it helps your brain think in English. And in class, just try to say one sentence. One sentence is a great start.”
Leo felt a little better. He followed Mr. Green’s advice. He listened to simple English songs every evening. He even started talking to his dog in English! A few weeks later, in an English class, when the teacher asked a question, Leo slowly raised his hand and gave a short answer. It was not perfect, but it was a start. Reading English novels is a great way to improve your English, but many students don’t know how to read them easily and effectively. 1
First, choose the right books. Don’t choose books that are too difficult for you. 2 You can start with short novels for teenagers, which have simple words and interesting stories. This will help you build your confidence in reading.
3 You don’t have to look up every new word in the dictionary when you read. If the new word is not important for you to understand the story, just guess its meaning from the context. Only look up the key words that stop you from understanding the story.
Third, read the whole story quickly first. Many students read very slowly, and they stop at every difficult sentence. 4 If you read the whole story quickly first, you can get the main idea of the book, and it will be easier for you to understand the details when you read it again.
Finally, read the story again after you finish it. The second time you read it, you will understand more things in the story. You can also take notes of useful words and expressions, which will help you improve your English.
5 If you follow these tips, you will find reading English novels is not as difficult as you think, and you can have a lot of fun from it.
A. Second, don’t look up every new word.
B. Here are some useful tips to help you read English novels better.
C. This will make you lose interest in the story soon.
D. You don’t have to read the most famous classic novels at the beginning.
E. Reading English novels can also help you learn about foreign cultures.
F. Reading is a lifelong journey, and you should keep doing it every day.
【答案】1. B 2. D 3. A 4. C 5. F

2. Why do people use different sets of words and expressions according to the passage?
3. How many reasons for language change are mentioned in this passage?
4. How do young people help develop language?
5. What are considered dead languages according to the passage?

The Development of High-Speed Rail in China
China has made remarkable achievements in the development of high-speed rail over the past few decades. The high-speed rail network in China has been expanding rapidly, becoming one of the largest and most advanced in the world.
The first high-speed rail line in China, the Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Railway, started operation in 2008. Since then, more and more high-speed rail lines have been built, connecting major cities and regions across the country. By the end of 2024, the total length of China’s high-speed rail lines in operation exceeded 40,000 kilometers.
High-speed rail has brought many benefits. Firstly, it has greatly shortened travel time. For example, the journey from Beijing to Shanghai, which used to take about 10—12 hours by regular train, now only takes about 4—5 hours by high-speed rail. This has made it more convenient for people to travel for business or tourism. Secondly, high-speed rail is more environmentally friendly compared to air travel and long-distance bus travel. It emits less carbon dioxide and other pollutants, contributing to environmental protection.
In addition, the development of high-speed rail has also promoted economic development. It has improved transportation efficiency, facilitating the flow of goods and people. Areas along the high-speed rail lines have witnessed increased investment, tourism, and business activities. Some small cities have even developed rapidly due to the arrival of high-speed rail, becoming new economic growth points.
China’s high-speed rail technology is also at the forefront of the world. Chinese high-speed trains are known for their high-speed, stability, and comfort. Many countries around the world have shown great interest in China’s high-speed rail technology and have cooperated with China in building high-speed rail projects. For example, China has participated in the construction of high-speed rail lines in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, sharing its advanced technology and experience with the world.
