on highly complex grammatical structures.Since at least the 1950s,the dominant theory has
emphasized multi-level mental structures as a key feature,organizing words into branching,tree-
like units known as grammatical building blocks.
However,a new study published in Nature Human Behaviour challenges this long-held
theory.According to its summary,the research provides evidence from English for a more basic
kind of language representation involving smaller,linear word groups-much like patterns of word
types.
Led by Morten H.Christiansen of Cornell University and Yngwie A.Nielsen of Aarhus
University,the study suggests that language may depend more on combining familiar word
groups-similar to putting together pre-made LEGO pieces(LEGO is a brand of toy bricks that can
be easily assembled into larger structures)-using short,linear word patterns,instead of relying
only on abstract grammatical rules.For example,the pattern "VERB+PREPOSITION+
DETERMINER”is shared between phrases like“added to a”and“defined by the'”.
The researchers carried out four preregistered word-decision experiments with a total of 497
participants,showing it is possible to prime such linear patterns,even without grammatical
building blocks.When people heard or read these word groups once,they processed them faster the
next time-a phenomenon called "priming".This offers strong evidence that they are part of our
mental picture of language,proving that traditional grammar rules cannot fully explain these patterns.
To test real-world application,two additional language database studies were conducted-one
on eye-tracked reading with 68 participants,and one on conversation analysis covering 358
speakers-and both confirmed the effect's reliability.These findings uncover multiword language
patterns that cannot be explained by traditional grammatical building blocks,presenting a challenge
to current theories of language representation,including generative and constructionist approaches.
"It might even be possible to explain how we use language in general with flatter structure,"
Christiansen said.His perspective suggests that the gap between human language and other animal
communication systems is much smaller than previously thought,possibly changing how we
understand language development and learning.
