The Spring Festival is one of the most important traditional festivals in China. This year’s Spring Festival is very special because China celebrates its first “Intangible Cultural Heritage Spring Festival (非遗春节)”.
In the past, people spent the Spring Festival mainly with big family dinners. But this year, we tried more ICH activities. My family made paper lanterns (灯笼) and watched a fun shadow puppet show (皮影戏). My grandparents even taught me to write the Spring Festival couplets (对联). I loved doing this best. When I saw the beautiful words on the red paper, I felt closer to our traditions. It is cool to bring old traditions to life.
I also learned that protecting (保护) ICH is not only about the past. For example, some artists use traditional ways to make beautiful zodiac stickers (生肖贴纸) for phones! This shows that the old culture can be new and fun.
On January 28, 2025, a special show called Yangbot surprised people around the world. The show mixed traditional Chinese Yangge with modern robots.
My classmates also took part in different traditional activities to celebrate the new year.
I learned how to make paper cuttings from my grandmother. Seeing the lively animals and cartoon characters created from a piece of red paper, I have a strong feeling of happiness.
Li Ming
I dressed up like a lion and danced to the music. Although I am a girl, I can still do the different moves like the boy. I feel happy when I see the smiles on people’s faces.
Wang Ling
This Spring Festival, while eating dumplings and watching fireworks, let’s also remember the value (价值) of our traditions. Culture makes us who we are!
1.Why is this year’s Spring Festival special?
2.Which Spring Festival activity was the writer’s favorite this year?
3.What is the example of Yangbot used for?
4.How do Li Ming and Wang Ling both feel when taking part in the traditional activities?
5.How will you celebrate the ICH Spring Festival next year? What do you think of this activity?

No swimming skills? No problem!
The Dead Sea’s magical water will keep you floating (漂浮) like a beach ball. Bring a book—you can even read while staying on the water!
The Dead Sea is in the Jordan Rift Valley in southwest Asia. It is about 50 kilometers long and 15 kilometers wide at its widest point. It is about 430 meters below sea level (海平面), making it the lowest point on earth’s land.
Yuncheng Salt Lake, also called “China’s Dead Sea”, is in Yuncheng City of Shanxi Province. As China’s oldest saltwater lake, it has a history of over 50 million years. Today, the lake is an important salt production and trade center. It is also a popular tourist place. Visitors come to enjoy its unique beauty and even float in its salty water.
What’s interesting is that the Dead Sea isn’t actually a sea. It’s a lake with the salt concentration (含盐量) of more than 30 percent, which is much higher than typical seawater. The Dead Sea stays so salty because it gets very little rainfall every year. And the hot weather around the Dead Sea makes the fresh water evaporate (蒸发) quickly. As a result, almost no plants or animals can live there. That’s why it’s called the Dead Sea.
However, don’t let the name or not having any sea life scare you. Even if you fall into the Dead Sea and can’t swim, you won’t die. The high concentration of salt in the Dead Sea allows anyone to float well. In fact, many people visit the Dead Sea during the sunny months from April to October. However, July and August are less popular because they are the hottest months. If you walk along the shore, you will likely see many people floating in the water, reading books or magazines.
1.Where is the Dead Sea?
2.What is interesting about the Dead Sea?
3.Why is the Dead Sea so salty?
4.When is a good time to visit the Dead Sea? Please give two options (选择).
5.What can people do if they take a visit to Yuncheng Salt Lake?
6.Have you ever been to any special places? What is special about it?

Nowadays, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been widely used in different parts of our life. In the field of education, AI learning software can provide better exercises according to students’ learning situations. It can also help students practice oral foreign languages through speech conversations. In the transportation field, people use AI technology to know more about road conditions in real-time and plan the best routes. In the medical field, AI can quickly scan a large amount of information to help doctors.
However, with the development of AI, people have many different thoughts. Some think it greatly improves the efficiency of life and work, while others worry that over-reliance (过度依赖) on AI will bring risks.
AI is a good helper in my work. It can quickly scan patients’ medical data and suggest possible diseases. This saves a lot of time. But AI can’t replace human doctors completely, as patients (病人) need human care and comfort. Only we doctors can understand their feelings and build trust with them.
—Dr. Liu, 38, People’s Hospital, Taiyuan
I think AI is very useful. When I learn math, an AI app can explain difficult problems clearly step by step. It also helps me review lessons by making study plans. But sometimes, it gives me too many study suggestions, and I don’t know which ones to follow.
—Li Wei, 14, Xinhua Middle School, Linfen
I’m a little worried about AI. Once, I used an AI writing tool to complete my English writing. But when the teacher asked me some questions about it, I couldn’t answer well because I didn’t think deeply myself. I’m afraid we’ll become lazy if we depend on AI too much.
—Wang Mei, 15, Sunshine School, Yuncheng
1.What does AI learning software do in education?
2.Why doesn’t AI take the place of human doctors according to Dr. Liu?
3.What’s Li Wei’s trouble when he uses AI to study?
4.How does Wang Mei show her idea about AI?
5.Is it right for a student to depend on AI too much? What advice can you give him?

Now, it’s really easy for people to trade second-hand things online in China. There are so many kinds of trading apps. Here are two of the most popular apps.
It has over 3 million users and about 20,000 books are sold on the app every day.
On Xianyu, one million people sell over 2 million second-hand things every day.
Why do people want to buy second-hand things?
Yin Weinan I am a big fan of vintage items (复古物品). They are cheap and carry stories from the past. Once I bought a bracelet (手链) with the words “Rose” and “Love, Jason” on it. I wondered about the story behind the bracelet.
Zhao Kaiqi I like to buy old watches on Jingzhi. They were much cheaper. When I held a watch, I started to think about its past. Who owned it? Or was it a gift on a special day? Every mark on the watch seemed to have a story.
1.Why do people sell their old things?
2.When did the Chinese second-hand market become important?

4.Why do Yin Weinan and Zhao Kaiqi both like buying second-hand things?
5.Do you like to buy the second-hand things? Why or why not?

As middle school students, we often face a lot of pressure, especially in our relationships with classmates and friends. Sometimes, we may feel left out (被忽略), misunderstood, or even bullied. These problems can make us feel very stressed and unhappy.
Understanding the Problems
Many students feel nervous when they have to speak in front of the class. They worry about what others might think of them. Some students also have trouble making friends. They feel shy and don’t know how to start a conversation.
Another common problem is conflicts (冲突) with friends. Friends may have different opinions or interests, which can lead to arguments. Sometimes, a small disagreement can turn into a big fight, and students may not know how to solve it.
Finding Help to Relieve (减轻;缓和) Pressure
When we face these problems, it’s important to find someone to talk to. Talking to a trusted friend, family member, or teacher can be very helpful. They can listen to our feelings and give us good advice. For example, if you feel nervous about speaking in class, your teacher might suggest (建议) practicing in front of a mirror or joining a speaking club.
My best friend and I had a big fight over a misunderstanding. I felt so sad. I talked to my teacher. With her help, we made up and became close again.
—Jack
If you have trouble making friends, a friend or a teacher can help you find common interests with others. They might suggest joining a club or activity where you can meet people who share your hobbies.
When you have a conflict with a friend, talking to someone can also help you find a solution. They can help you understand the other person’s opinions and suggest ways to make up. Sometimes, just talking about the problem can make you feel better.
In a word, it’s normal to face relationship problems and feel stressed. But we don’t have to deal with these problems alone. By talking to others and getting help, we can find ways to relieve our pressure and feel happier.

2.What can cause conflicts between friends?
3.Who can middle school students talk to when they face relationship problems?

Do junior high students have enough self-control to use smart phones properly?
Recently, eighth-graders at Beijing New Oriental Yangzhou Foreign Language School organized a debate (辩论) over this topic. Some parents also sat in on the whole debate.
The students were encouraged by a class survey. It was about how they used their phones during the holidays. The results showed that four students spent more than 12 hours a day on their phones, while only two didn’t use them at all.
“We were very surprised after seeing the results,” said Su Yuehan, a student. Their teacher, Mr Lang encouraged his students to do something to help. He believed that it would be better than just controlling them. “That’s why we decided to organize a debate,” said Su.
Both the teams were well prepared for the debate. They used researched examples to support their points.
AgreeEven though they haven’t fully developed, parents and teachers can help. Students need to know about the development of the modern technology and what is happening in the world.
DisagreeJunior high students haven’t fully developed yet. They can’t control themselves when using their phones. It may take them a lot of time to look through the useless information. Sometimes they can be influenced by the bad things.
“We didn’t mean to say if using smart phones is right or wrong,” said Mr Lang. “We hope students will learn self-control while using smart phones through this debate.”
1.What did the idea of the debate come from?
2.Why did Mr Lang encourage his students to have a debate?

Pollen (花粉) helps plants grow, but some people’s bodies don’t like it. Their bodies wrongly fight against pollen. This makes them have pollen allergies (过敏).
Because the weather is getting warmer, flowers open earlier and live longer, making the pollen season longer. What’s more, warmer weather brings more carbon dioxide—a gas (气体) that helps plants grow. Plants use it as food to grow and this helps plants make more pollen.

Feelings are part of our lives. We feel happy, sad, angry and scared. It is important to know how to understand and manage (管理) them. When we are happy, we can share our joy with others. If we are sad, we can talk to a friend. When we are angry, we should take a break and calm down. If we are scared, we can find someone to help us. Understanding and managing our own feelings help us be stronger.
There are different kinds of feelings like anger, frustration (挫败), worry and sadness. We can also have feelings like excitement, happiness and joy. These feelings can be difficult to control and sometimes stop us from doing things we need to do, like playing and working.
Some Good Ways to Calm Down
Talking to a trusted adult could help.
Getting some fresh air outside.
Spending some time by yourself: reading, sleeping or listening to music.
Splashing (泼洒) a little bit of cold water on your face.
Having a cool drink of water.

Taking big deep breaths slowly in and out could help too.

请阅读下面语篇,根据其内容回答问题,将答案写在答题卡相应的位置上。
Do your parents ask you to do chores at home? In fact, it is part of labor (劳动) education. Let’s know more about it.
What is labor education?
Labor education doesn’t mean teaching students how to work, but is an education about the hardworking spirit. There are many kinds of things students can do at home, at school and in the community (社区).
In the following, three middle school students are talking about labor education in their schools.
Steve, 15, the UK
Starting in Grade 7, our school makes DIY as part of the courses. It allows us to use different materials to make things like flower pots. We can also join in some volunteer activities. They are all useful and meaningful. I learn a lot from them.
Zhang Boren, 13, China
Students in my school have a 5-minute longer break between classes. To help us better enjoy break-time activities, the school opens planting areas and animal breeding zones (饲养区). So now we can do some labor in the gardens and animal feeding places during breaks, which is quite new and relaxing.
Huang Luofei, 15, Singapore
In Singapore, schools don’t teach labor education directly. We usually use the time after school to do some useful volunteer activities, such as helping clean up the school or raising money for people in need. Through these activities, we can learn to care about others. I enjoy them.
What can labor education bring to students?
●Be independent: Doing chores teaches students important life skills about how to care for themselves, and helps them become independent.
●Be responsible (有责任心的): When students clean their classrooms or help at home, they learn to share responsibility as members of a group.
●Be thankful: By doing some work themselves, students will thank what others do for them.
Labor education isn’t just about “work”. Through these hands-on tasks, students can learn that even small acts help everyone around them.
1.What is labor education?
2.How does Zhang Boren spend his break time now?
3.Which two countries have a common way of labor education?
4.What can students be like if they get labor education?
5.What labor did you do at home or in the school? What did you learn from it?

Passage 6
(24-25八年级下·山西·晋城市阳城县·期末)
请阅读下面非连续性文本,按要求完成所给任务。
【答案】

3.根据“The Dead Sea stays so salty because it gets very little rainfall every year. And the hot weather around the Dead Sea makes the fresh water evaporate (蒸发) quickly.”可知,死海如此咸是因为它每年降雨量很少,且周围炎热的天气使淡水迅速蒸发,故填Because it gets very little rainfall every year and the hot weather around it makes the fresh water evaporate quickly.
4.根据“In fact, many people visit the Dead Sea during the sunny months from April to October. However, July and August are less popular because they are the hottest months.”可知,四月到十月阳光明媚适合游览死海,七月和八月因为太热不太受欢迎,所以可以在四月、五月、六月、九月、十月中任选两个月,故填April and May/June/September/October.

Passage 3
(24-25八年级下·山西·晋中市太谷县·期末)

Do your parents ask you to do chores at home? In fact, it is part of labor (劳动) education. Let’s know more about it.
