Hi, everyone. This is the monthly meeting of our club. We’ve been fortunate to have got good advice from some famous athletes on how to improve our skills and build up our body. Today, we’ll hear something different. We’re honored to have Emma Wilson here. Emma is a health expert and lecturer from UBC, the University of British Columbia. Emma worked for a football team in Manchester, then for a very successful rugby team in Dublin, and finally ended up working here in Vancouver. Emma says it’s challenging to be a health expert, because people can be easily influenced by advertisements that lack scientific support. Also, people aren’t willing to change their views about food and nutrition as there is so much confusing information online. It’s really important to hear what experts say and that’s why we’ve invited Emma here. She isn’t going to tell us about everything we should eat, but she will teach us to make better choices. Let’s welcome Emma Wilson.

Recently, video clips of Zhang Jianns, a sanitation (环卫) worker, directing foreigners have gone viral online. Her fluent English and confident feature showcased in the videos have deeply impressed the viewers, sparking curiosity about how an ordinary-looking sanitation worker had such impressive English skills.
Behind the hit lies a decade-long journey of persistence. In 2012, Zhang Jianna took on the role of a sanitation worker in the embassy (大使馆) area of Sanlitun in Beijing’s Chaoyang district. A special encounter while working has motivated Zhang to learn English by herself, which she continues with determination to this day. “My goal is quite simple. I just want to help whenever Someone is in need, whether asking for directions, visa procedures, or telling them about the embassy area I am responsible for,” said Zhang.
Thus, at the age of 40, Zhang began a personal challenge. Without a teacher, she began learning English from her children’s textbooks, starting with basic words and phrases commonly used for giving directions. With no fixed study hours, she used every spare moment. While others rested, she memorized vocabulary and practiced speaking. Upon arriving home after work, she would write down new knowledge points and review them until she thoroughly understood them. Over the years, she has filled over a dozen notebooks. Her memory posed her biggest challenge. “Learning English at an older age, I would easily forget the words I learned before. Persistence is the key to learning English. Learn step by step, learn every day,” Zhang said.
When asked about the greatest reward of learning English, Zhang said, “Growing up in a rural area without a college education, I sometimes feared being looked down upon. But every time I help a stranger in English, I feel incredibly accomplished.” “Tiring, but satisfying,” Zhang Jianna reflects on her work and language learning. “To serve others makes me happy, and it’s where I prove my self-worth,” said Zhang. “After retirement, I also want to introduce my hometown in English and improve local tourism,” she said, acknowledging that her inspiring journey has led to this new goal.
24. What aroused curiosity about Zhang Jianna?
A. Her confident expression. B. Her role as a sanitation worker.
C. Her great fluency in English. D. Her friendly attitude to foreigners.
25. How did Zhang Jianna learn English?
A. With the help of a teacher. B. Through watching videos online.
C. From her children’s textbooks. D. By attending language classes.
26. What does Zhang Jianna think of the greatest reward of learning English?
A. Better job opportunities. B. Respect from family members.
C. Social recognition. D. Self-confidence.
27. What is Zhang Jianna’s future goal related to English learning?
A. To promote local tourism in her hometown. B. To become a language teacher.
C. To work in an embassy abroad. D. To write a book in English.

Have you ever seen an animal video online that made you stop and wonder? Videos showing a wolf taking care of a rabbit, or a lion walking calmly through a small town are now spreading widely. This is possible because of AI technology. However, scientists warn such popular videos may hurt real wildlife protection and spread wrong ideas about nature.
A study in Conservation Biology points out that AI-generated (AI生成的) animal videos create an untrue world, leading to wrong ideas about animal behavior and broadening the gap between people and nature. Co-author José Guerrero-Casado stresses the danger of false information. For example, videos showing birds killing “bad” snakes might make people less willing to protect snakes, and create false ideas about animals that are already in danger.
The effect on children is especially worrying. These videos can give them wrong ideas about how people and animals really get along. When children discover that real-world animals do not act as they do in these made-up videos, it can have the opposite result, finally making them feel less connected to nature. This risk grows as young people increasingly turn to social media for information.
So, how can one recognize these videos? Experts suggest looking for a few signs: unnatural animal movements that appear too smooth or seem impossible in real life; light and shadows that do not look quite right; and small details like fur or feathers that appear unclear or repeat in an unusual way.
To deal with these risks, the research team suggests putting more effort into education, like teaching media literacy (素养) in schools. As another co-author Francisco Sánchez says, the goal is to make sure “children learn early that there are no lions living here.” While they think this is important, the researchers also say that school lessons alone cannot stop the spread of false information made by AI. This leads to an important question about who else in society needs to help solve this problem, if school education is not enough.
28. How does the author present the issue in the first paragraph?
A. By giving examples. B. By making a comparison.
C. By quoting an expert. D. By sharing an experience.
29. What can be inferred about AI-generated animal videos?
A. They make children love animals less.
B. They mainly focus on species in danger.
C. They may make animals seem dangerous.
D. They create a false understanding of nature.
30. What is the author’s attitude towards AI-generated animal videos?
A. Supportive. B. Indifferent. C. Concerned. D. Doubtful.
31. What will the author most probably discuss next?
A. The media literacy lessons. B. The duties of social media.
C. The popularity of such videos. D. The threats to wildlife protection.
根据第一段“Have you ever seen an animal video online that made you stop and wonder? Videos showing a wolf taking care of a rabbit, or a lion walking calmly through a small town are now spreading widely. This is possible because of AI technology. However, scientists warn such popular videos may hurt real wildlife protection and spread wrong ideas about nature.(你是否曾在网上刷到过令人驻足好奇的动物视频?如今,狼照料兔子、狮子从容穿行小镇这类视频广为流传。这类视频的出现得益于人工智能技术。然而科学家警示,这类热门视频会损害真正的野生动物保护工作,还会传播关于自然的错误认知。)”可知,作者通过举例(狼照顾兔子,狮子平静穿过小镇的视频)来引出第一段要讨论的问题,即AI生成动物视频的危害及应对措施。故选A。
根据第二段中“A study in Conservation Biology points out that AI-generated (AI生成的) animal videos create an untrue world, leading to wrong ideas about animal behavior and broadening the gap between people and nature.(一项发表于《保护生物学》的研究指出,人工智能生成的动物视频构建出虚假的世界,会让人们对动物行为产生误解,进一步拉大人类与自然之间的隔阂。)”
根据第二段中“Co-author José Guerrero-Casado stresses the danger of false information.(合著者何塞·格雷罗·卡萨多强调了虚假信息的危险性。)”以及第三段中“The effect on children is especially worrying.(对儿童的影响尤其令人担忧。)”
根据最后一段中“While they think this is important, the researchers also say that school lessons alone cannot stop the spread of false information made by AI. This leads to an important question about who else in society needs to help solve this problem, if school education is not enough.(虽然他们认为这很重要,但研究人员也表示,仅靠学校课程无法阻止人工智能制造的虚假信息的传播。这就引出了一个重要的问题:如果学校教育不够,社会上还有谁需要帮助解决这个问题?)”可知,作者接下来最有可能讨论的是除了学校教育之外,还有谁需要帮助解决这个问题,即社会媒体的责任。故选B。
D
Dogs have been a part of human society for over 20,000 years. Whereas they first served people by supporting hunters, it did not take long before they became part of the home. Companion dogs might not help secure food, but for years evidence has mounted that they help diminish anxiety and improve sociality. Research led by Kikusui Takefumi at Azabu University, published recently in iScience, explains what might be going on. It reveals that the microbes (微生物)found in the guts (肠道)of dog owners are apparently different from those who do not own dogs and that this is, at least partially, responsible for the behavioral differences.
The brain does not exist on its own. The microbes found elsewhere, particularly in the gut, produce chemical compounds (化合物)that influence how the brain works. With this in mind, Dr Kikusui wondered if microbe transfer from dogs might be helping bring psychological benefits to owners. Keen to find out, he set up an experiment with 343 participants in Tokyo, focusing specifically on teenagers, as adolescence is a crucial period of brain development when social interactions often have lasting mental effects. He and his colleagues therefore psychologically analysed 96 teens who were dog owners and 247 teens who were not. As expected, dog owners suffered from fewer social problems.
The next step would have been to introduce dog-associated microbes directly into the bodies of non-dog-owning teenagers. Since that is an ethically grey area, Dr Kikusui worked instead with mice. After six weeks, mice carrying microbes from dog-owning teens spent longer approaching unfamiliar mice and showed greater concern for troubled cage-mates.
Dr Kikusui admits that making direct comparisons between mice and humans is far from perfect, but his findings nonetheless indicate that the microbiotic changes brought about by dog ownership influence the brain. If the conclusions hold, it seems that the path to a healthier mind may begin not with careful self-reflection, but with the companionship of dogs.
32. What does the underlined word “diminish” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Overcome. B. Replace. C. Balance. D. Reduce.
33. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The differences between teenage dog owners and non-owners.
B. The design and participant selection of the experiment.
C. The biological basis and motivation for the research.
D. The role of gut microbes in shaping brain activity.
34. Why did the researchers conduct experiments on mice?
A. Dog owners show fewer social problems.
B. Teenagers were more difficult to study directly.
C. Human experiments may raise ethical concerns.
D. Mice can behave more actively in group interaction.
35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Mouse-human comparisons may have limits in brain research.
B. Spending time with dogs may contribute to mental well-being.
C. Developing a healthy mind depends on careful self-reflection.
D. Psychological health requires changes in biological systems.
根据第一段中的“Companion dogs might not help secure food, but for years evidence has mounted that they help diminish anxiety and improve sociality.(伴侣犬可能无法帮助获取食物,但多年来,越来越多的证据表明它们有助于diminish焦虑并提高社交能力)”可知,句中but体现转折关系,前文说伴侣犬不能获取食物,后文应说明其积极作用,diminish anxiety与improve sociality并列,均为积极影响,结合选项可推测diminish意为“减少”,与Reduce意思相近。故选D项。
根据第二段中的“The brain does not exist on its own. The microbes found elsewhere, particularly in the gut, produce chemical compounds (化合物) that influence how the brain works. With this in mind, Dr Kikusui wondered if microbe transfer from dogs might be helping bring psychological benefits to owners. Keen to find out, he set up an experiment with 343 participants in Tokyo, focusing specifically on teenagers, as adolescence is a crucial period of brain development when social interactions often have lasting mental effects.(大脑并不是独立存在的。
根据第三段中的“The next step would have been to introduce dog-associated microbes directly into the bodies of non-dog-owning teenagers. Since that is an ethically grey area, Dr Kikusui worked instead with mice.(下一步本应是将与狗相关的微生物直接引入不养狗的青少年体内。由于这处于伦理灰色地带,菊水博士转而用老鼠进行实验)”可知,直接对人类青少年进行实验可能会引发伦理方面的担忧,所以研究人员选择用老鼠做实验。故选C项。
35. B 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Dr Kikusui admits that making direct comparisons between mice and humans is far from perfect, but his findings nonetheless indicate that the microbiotic changes brought about by dog ownership influence the brain. If the conclusions hold, it seems that the path to a healthier mind may begin not with careful self-reflection, but with the companionship of dogs.(菊水博士承认,直接比较老鼠和人类并不完美,但他的研究结果仍然表明,养狗带来的微生物变化会影响大脑。如果这些结论成立,那么通往更健康心智的道路似乎可能不是始于仔细的自我反思,而是始于狗的陪伴)”可推断,与狗相处可能有助于心理健康。故选B项。

How to Overcome the Harmful Habit of Judging
Ah, punctuality — the art of being precisely on time. It’s a concept so deeply rooted in some cultures that even being a minute late can cause a small-scale panic attack. ____36____ Let’s examine whether punctuality is the defining feature of a superior society or merely another subjective construct.
Each part of the world has a unique relationship with time, enriching the fabric of global culture. In Japan, for example, you’re always expected to arrive on time, and preferably a few minutes early.
____37____ Tough luck, but the next one will be there precisely on the dot. In contrast, the Philippines has a more relaxed approach to time. If someone says 3 o’clock, arriving around 3:30 is common and expected. This isn’t laziness, but a cultural preference for living in the moment.
But does being punctual make a culture more advanced? The Swiss are celebrated for their precision and punctuality, often cited as a perfect example of efficiency. Their trains run on time, their watches are the gold standard. ____38____ And Switzerland is often ranked as one of the most developed and happiest countries in the world, but let’s wait a bit to conclude.
Consider the case of Brazil, where “Brazilian time” is a well-known concept. ____39____ If you attend a party at the specified time, you’ll likely find the host still in their bathrobe. Many Brazilians have a laid-back approach to life. They don’t sweat the small stuff like running five minutes late because they’re busy enjoying life. Many live by the motto, “Tudo bem,” which means “It’s all good.” Honestly, they seem to be onto something.
So, is punctuality essential? It depends on what cultures you are in. Whether you’re a stickler for punctuality or more laid-back, what truly matters is how you spend your time. ____40____ Let’s try to find that middle ground where we can respect others’ time while embracing the joy of living in the moment. Ultimately, time is just a construct, and life is too short to stress about being late.
A. Miss a train by a minute?
B. Punctuality is timeless art.
C. But is punctuality essential?
D. In this context, punctuality is flexible.
E. You could set your clock by their daily routines.
F. There, being late is not only accepted but expected.
G. Are you enjoying the journey or constantly watching the clock?
36. C 上文“It’s a concept so deeply rooted in some cultures that even being a minute late can cause a small-scale panic attack.(守时这一概念在某些文化中根深蒂固,以至于哪怕迟到一分钟都可能引发一场小规模的恐慌)”强调了守时在部分文化中的重要性。
37. A 上文“In Japan, for example, you’re always expected to arrive on time, and preferably a few minutes early.(例如,在日本,人们总是被要求准时到达,最好还能提前几分钟)”说明了日本对守时的严格要求。空后“Tough luck, but the next one will be there precisely on the dot.(运气不好,但下一班列车会准点到达)”提到了“下一班列车”,可推断空处与“错过列车”相关。 故选A。
38. E 上文“The Swiss are celebrated for their precision and punctuality, often cited as a perfect example of efficiency. Their trains run on time, their watches are the gold standard.(瑞士人以其精准和守时而闻名,常被奉为效率的完美典范。他们的列车准点运行,手表是业界标杆)”详细描述了瑞士人的守时和精准。空处需要进一步补充瑞士人守时的表现,与前文为顺接补充关系。E项“你可以根据他们的日常作息来校准时钟。”形象地体现了瑞士人作息的规律性和守时性,是对前文“精准和守时”的进一步说明,符合语境。故选E。
39. F 上文“Consider the case of Brazil, where “Brazilian time” is a well-known concept.(以巴西为例,“巴西时间”是一个众所周知的概念)”引出巴西的时间观念。空后“If you attend a party at the specified time, you’ll likely find the host still in their bathrobe.(如果你按指定时间参加派对,很可能会发现主人还穿着浴袍)”说明巴西人对迟到的包容。
40 G 上文“Whether you’re a stickler for punctuality or more laid-back, what truly matters is how you spend your time.(无论你是严守守时的人还是更随性的人,真正重要的是你如何度过时间)”强调“如何度过时间”比“是否守时”更重要。
